Tu Bishvat | Choni, the Carob and the Dream, by Rav Yitzchak Etshalom How are the Choni legends - the long slumber, the carob tree and the rain-circle - related to each other? In honor of Tu biSh'vat, we explored the story of Honi HaMa'gil (or Hame'agel) and the various Aggadot associated with him, in the scholion of Megilat Ta'anit, the Mishna, Bavli and Yerushalmi - and in Josephus' Antiquities. In our survey we noted that these narratives had a number of conflicting details. We discussed how to address differing narratives about what seems to be the same event and proposed several strategies for resolving these discrepancies. The shiur was given at GPATS (Graduate Program for Advanced Talmudic Studies) at Stern College for Women.

Hey Profiteers! Welcome to another insightful episode of Pawsitive Profit! In this segment, we embark on a nutritional exploration of carob chips, unraveling the mysteries of their impact on our canine companions. Are carob chips a healthy addition to your dog's diet, or could they be contributing to unnecessary calories? Join me, your host Kara Brothers, in this enlightening episode, the THIRD installment in our 8-part Carob for Dogs Series. To truly understand carob's influence, we begin by dissecting its nutritional profile. Carob, naturally low in fat, houses fiber, protein, and a spectrum of essential vitamins and minerals. A stark contrast to chocolate, notorious for high sugar and theobromine content, carob emerges as a healthier alternative for our furry friends. Delving into the calorie conversation, we navigate the delicate balance. While carob is lower in fat than chocolate, the presence of natural sugars demands vigilant portion control. Excessive treats, even those adorned with carob, may contribute to unwarranted calories and potential weight gain. Moderation remains the golden rule. Carob's commendable fiber content takes center stage as a boon for digestive health. The positive impact on bowel movements adds to its allure, positioning carob as a valuable addition to a well-rounded doggy diet. Antioxidant properties further elevate carob's status. Though not a panacea, these antioxidants combat oxidative stress and inflammation, potentially enhancing various bodily functions. A nuanced perspective on carob's health benefits emerges. From a culinary standpoint, carob chips offer a delectable, chocolate-like taste without the perilous risks associated with real chocolate. This culinary advantage positions carob as a preferred choice for conscientious bakers, striking a harmonious balance between flavor and safety. While generally safe, we must tread carefully, considering potential allergies. Sensitivities vary among dogs, emphasizing the importance of gradual treat introductions and vigilant observation for adverse reactions. In conclusion, carob chips can indeed be a healthy addition to your dog's diet when approached with moderation. The trifecta of a favorable nutritional profile, lower fat content, and delightful flavor solidify carob's standing as a popular choice among discerning bakers. As always, remember to align treats with your dog's overall diet and health needs. Stay tuned for the next episode in our carob series, where we'll explore how carob might impact various aspects of canine health. If you happen to be watching on YouTube, like this episode, and please subscribe to my channel, if you want more of this tasty dog treat content. In today's first episode of the carob series, let's dive into an overview of the tasty world of carob. Don't worry if what you're looking for, isn't in this episode, I've got about six other episodes to follow with specific content on carob. So you can find the episode, you're looking for, dive into it and get that great info. What is [00:03:00] carob? How is it made? And why has it become such a sought after alternative to chocolate, in dog treats? We'll unveil the mysteries surrounding carob from its origin to flavor profile and explore the key reasons behind its popularity among dog treat enthusiasts and we're going to do this in short episodes. got a lot of different topics to cover and I found that short episodes really helped tie everything in together and you can get great nuggets of information that don't have to take a long time. Let's talk about the carob origins. Carob comes from the pod of the Ceratonia siliqua tree that's native to the Mediterranean region. Often referred to as the carob bean, these pods contain seeds surrounded by a sweet pulp. That pulp is ground to produce carob powder or use to make carob chips. One of the primary reasons that carob has gained popularity is its role as a safe and friendly [00:04:00] dog treat chocolate alternative. Unlike chocolate, carob lacks theobromine. That's the compound that can be toxic to dogs. It's really toxic to dogs and pretty much we all know that of the list of food not to give dogs, chocolate is right up there. This makes carob a sweet solution for pet owners looking to treat their furry friends without the associated risks of chocolate. Let's talk about the flavor profile of carob. Carob has a naturally sweet and mild flavor with notes of caramel and honey, I'm getting hungry already. This is not just good for dogs, it's delicious for humans. If you've never tried carob chips, I encourage you. Please try them. They're absolutely delicious. It's taste is often compared to chocolate, although it lacks the bitterness found in cocoa. This pleasant sweetness makes carob a delightful addition to dog treats providing a tasty experience for canine [00:05:00] taste buds. And there's a lot of combinations you can do with carob. A popular one that I used to do for a dog that would come in and only there, they only wanted something carob. One of the most popular things I made was my fat Elvis donut and the fat Elvis donut was a banana applesauce donut, with a peanut butter glaze and I did dehydrated banana chips on top with a carob drizzle. Oh, my gosh, it looked good enough to eat. It looked spectacular and this was this dog's particular favorite, Marlow. Anyway carob is something that I try to carry and that's the doughnut that really did it for me. Beyond being a safe alternative, carob also offers health benefits. It contains fiber which can aid in digestion and it's rich in polyphenols. And if you know what polyphenols are, you know it's an antioxidant known for its potential to combat oxidative stress and inflammation. That's kind of [00:06:00] cool because that can work for dogs too. While carob is not a substitute for a balanced diet, obviously, carob does add a wholesome touch to your pup's treats. Carob chips also bring more than just flavor to the table. They can enhance the texture of dog treats, providing a delightful crunch or chewiness. The textural element adds to the overall enjoyment of the treats, making them not only safe, but also satisfying for your furry companions. You'll have some customers that will walk in if you have carob chips on your cookie or even a glaze made with carob powder or carob chips, and they'll say, Hmm. Is that safe for dogs? The information you're going to find in this series will educate you to know exactly what to tell them. It is safe for dogs. Absolutely. Carob is also very versatile, whether you're baking cookies or biscuits, or even pup friendly cakes. Carob chips seamlessly integrate into a variety of dog recipes. [00:07:00] Same with carob powder. This versatility allows bakers to get creative and it provides a wide range of treats that cater to different tastes and preferences. So there's a whole range of things you can do with carob chips and carob powder. I can't wait to get into it and explore this whole thing with you. Stay with me as we move into the next segment where we will explore how carob chips and carob powder is made. Carob chips are made from the dried and roasted carob pods of the Ceratonia siliqua tree. This process involves several steps. First is harvesting. The cocoa pods are harvested once they ripened on the carob tree. The pods are typically brown and have a sweet pulp surrounding the seeds. That's right. Carob is naturally sweet. Then they're dried. The harvested pods are dried to remove the moisture content. And this can be done naturally by exposing them to the sun or using specialized drying [00:08:00] equipment. Probably dehydrators right? Once dried the carob pods are roasted to develop their characteristic flavor. Roasting enhances the natural sweetness and imparts or rich caramel like taste to the carob. Interestingly enough, roasting carob pods is a lot like roasting coffee beans. You'll find light roast carob, medium roast carob, dark roast carob, all those differ in shades. If you're using carob as a colorant to tint to your frosting. You can get a nice variety of shades. Also flavor, it affects the flavor profile, just like a coffee bean. I find that pretty interesting. After roasting, the seeds are removed from the carob pods and the seeds are usually not used in making carob chips. That's a little bit different from coffee. Cause we use the bean, we roast the bean, we grind the bean, right? And we mix with water and we have coffee. With carob, the pods are used and the beans are discarded. [00:09:00] The remaining pulp of the carob pods is ground into a fine powder, which is the raw material for making carob chips. That carob powder can be used as is, or it can be further processed into carob chips. Carob powder is often combined with fats, such as Palm kernel oil, or other fats, to create a mixture that can be molded and solidified into a chip or a chip like shape. The carob, the fat mixture is molded into chip shapes, and then it's allowed to solidify. The molds are then cooled to ensure that the carob chips maintain their desired form. Now, because they're mixed with this fat and then solidified, this means that for carob chips, when they get warm, they're also going to melt. So if you have used carob chips and you've used them in your treats, like maybe an icing or a glaze or something like that, and you've had to vend in the hot summer heat. [00:10:00] You'll notice that your your carob chips do melt. Which is why I really like working with carob powder over carob chips if I'm going to make any glaze or any icing. You guys stay tuned. There will be recipes in this series and I will give you a carob icing that does not melt. It's fantastic. I cannot wait to share it with you. More on that later. So after the carob chips, we're just going to get back to how carob is made. After there, the chips are solidified the carob chips are then packaged and ready for your use. They can be incorporated into various recipes, including dog treats or even human treats it. Guys, if you have not tasted carob chips, they're amazing. They're absolutely delicious. And they are a safe and dog friendly, alternative to chocolate. Carob chips, as we have learned offer a magical combination of safety, sweetness, and versatility for dog treat enthusiasts. Understanding the origin and flavor [00:11:00] profile of carob enhances our appreciation for this delightful alternative to chocolate. Join me next time as we explore the delicate balance between flavor, nutrition and the potential health benefits or concerns when it comes to carob chips. Not A Caveman Fixated on Bugs and Bees After All: John the Baptist's Wilderness Vegetarian Diet - Locust Beans Not Bugs - An Exploration of Early Christian Writings and Scholarly Texts Today on This Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcast. Nevermind the old Sunday school notion of John the Baptist being some weird caveman dude dining on bugs! John may have a tarnished caveman reputation of eating locusts and honey out in the wild, but this is really a story about copyists mistranslating a Greek word as "locust" ('a-k-r-i-d-e-s') instead of "carob" ('e-g-k-r-i-d-e-s'). (Henry Ford: "Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young." Albert Einstein: "Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death.") Since my original research on this topic, a couple more early Christian apocryphal writings have come to light, have been made available in English. These add to the surprisingly large collection of vegetarian references in early Christian writings regarding the diet of John the Baptist. New Testament Apocrypha, Vol. III, by Tony Burke was published and some John the Baptist books are included. In one of the earlier volumes there was a John the Baptist text made available for the first time in English that has a vegetarian passage regarding John's diet in the wilderness. Included in the third volume are, The Birth of Holy John the Forerunner, and, The Decapitation of John the Forerunner, both containing plant-based passages about John's diet consisting of "locusts from the tree" (in the Middle east called "the Saint John's Tree", and "Carob Tree") and "wild honey", also "an abundance of bread and wild honey dripping from a rock". Clearly there was an understanding in early Christianity that this was referring to locust beans (carob pods), not insects. Carob pods do look a bit like locusts hanging from tree branches, hence the name. Locust beans can be ground up and used to make a kind of Middle eastern carob flour flat bread. There's a "cakes dipped in honey" reference in the Gospel of the Ebionites. The wild "honey" was not from bees but sticky desert fruit of some kind. So, as you'll hear being documented during this pod...cast, there are all these plant-based references to John's diet coming from many different sources, and scholars have noticed and discussed these: "Probably the most interesting of the changes from the familiar New Testament accounts of Jesus comes in the Gospel of the Ebionites description of John the Baptist, who, evidently, like his successor Jesus, maintained a strictly vegetarian cuisine." (Professor Bart Ehrman, Lost Christianities: The Battles for Scripture and the Faiths We Never Knew) "His [John the Baptist's] food was wild honey that tasted like manna, like a cake cooked in olive oil." (The Other Gospels, Accounts of Jesus from Outside the New Testament, by Bart Ehrman) John the Baptist was a prophet with large number of followers in Israel and Transjordan regions. After his passing, several of his successors headed what became various rival Nasoraean (Nazorean) sects, one of those being Jesus and the Jesus movement. "Again Jesus said to his disciples: Truly I say to you, among all those born of women none has arisen greater than John the Baptizer." (Matthew 11:11, George Howard's translation of Shem-Tob's Hebrew Gospel of Matthew, described as "the oldest extant Hebrew version of the Gospel of Matthew") May the Blessings Be James Bean Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcasts Sant Mat Satsang Podcasts A Satsang Without Walls https://www.SpiritualAwakeningRadio.com
Welcome to the Radical Roots of Ethnic Studies, a series of the Dissidents Podcast, with your co-hosts, Jennifer Richmond and Brandy Shufutinsky. In this series we explore the radical roots of liberated ethnic studies, how extreme ideology is infiltrating our schools with the aim to indoctrinate instead of educate, and our search for solutions to empower parents, teachers and students, giving them the tools to embrace inquiry and to express their individuality. This week we speak with Carob Marcelle, an educator, mother and host of Be Not Afraid. Carob moved her family from Washington to Utah in search of a K-12 education for her child that was free of indoctrination. What she found instead was a growing institutionalization of critical social justice throughout both the education system and religious environment. In her concern over the “colonization” of our minds, she has gone in search of ways to promote black history free of critical “resentment” theory. This wine is the "house red" at Carob and Hare and is an intriguing drop, over-delivering on value with every sip. 00:08:54 Robert Godden and The Voice Referendum Our political commentator, Robert Godden, joins Steve to read the tea leaves of where Australia is at as it approaches the October 14, 2023, referendum on The Voice. 00:39:44 Donna Twycross, Carob and Hare, and the people and performers of Kanmantoo Every Friday night from 5.30-ish until 9-ish, locals and visitor amble in to Carob and Hare on the main street of Kanmantoo, to eat simple food, have a drink, and either listen to or perform music (or both), with an environment of inclusive warmth. The mystical and energetic conjurer of this gathering is the owner of Carob and Hare, Donna Twycross. Donna fell in love with carob when she was in her teens because it tasted great (to her) and met her needs of being a healthy addition to her diet. Today, she produces Hare Balls and other treats using locally grown carob, from our friends Michael and Jam Jolley at The Australian Carob Co. in Booborowie, South Australia. As you'll hear in the discussion, carob is a sweet edible pod that comes from the carob tree. It's been cultivated for over 4000 years and if you get good pods, it tastes very good. That wasn't Steve's experience growing up, but Donna helps put that into perspective. Aside from her carob business, Donna explains the rationale for the weekly community gatherings she hosts, as well as special, monthly, Saturday night themed events. She also shares a sneak peek into her new, Sunday afternoon events themed around Alice in Wonderland, should you happen to visit Kanmantoo from mid-October onwards. In this chat we also meet Stevie Ray Wonder (not his real name, but all will be explained), who has fallen into the role of MCing and stage managing the Friday night events. We also meet locals, Kathryn and Peter Roberts. They moved here many years ago and have reflections to share, including some from Peter who has been driving the school bus for a long time, watching kids grow as he gets them from point A to point B. Finally, we chat with artist, Garry Duncan. Garry is another local and a regular and his artwork not only adorns boardrooms around the world, silos around South Australia, and a variety of galleries everywhere, but it hangs in pride of place around Carob and Hare. 01:42:01 Musical Pilgrimage Our featured song this episode is Plague Of Monsters by BW4. BW4 is a partnership between Steve Hearne and Rod Mitchell. Rob Performed at Carob and Hare, despite being a long way from his hometown of Andamooka (which is a hefty stone's throw from another source of opals, Coober Pedy, which recently featured on The Adelaide Show). BW4 is named after a redundant microwave tower on the Stuart Highway just south of Pimba because Rod was fascinated by Central Australian deserts and disputed Australian History. That note makes this song more relevant than ever because The Voice debate has seemed to release angels as well as monsters as people reflect on what the referendum is all about.Support the show: https://theadelaideshow.com.au/listen-or-download-the-podcast/adelaide-in-crowd/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Co-hosts Ryan Piansky and Holly Knotowicz, a speech-language pathologist who serves on APFED's Health Sciences Advisory Council, talk with guest Stephanie Ulrich, NTP. Stephanie Ulrich is a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, allergy-friendly recipe developer, and patient advocate, living in Brooklyn, NY. Being diagnosed with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) and food allergies as an adult came as a complete surprise to Stephanie and left her feeling overwhelmed with learning how to navigate her new diagnosis. However, her love of food inspired her to experiment in the kitchen, developing nourishing allergy-friendly recipes that she shares on her website, The Open Cookbook. In addition, Stephanie is a health coach at ViuHealth, a virtual care solution designed to help people living with autoimmunity improve their everyday lives through a combination of data science and access to a dedicated clinician-led care team. In this episode, Ryan and Holly discuss with Stephanie how she navigates life with allergies, asthma, and EoE. They discuss the impact the conditions have on her life, and her journey to diagnosis and finding her medical care team. This includes a discussion about how she changed careers because of her EoE diagnosis and began a website to share allergy-friendly recipes. Listen in for advice from Stephanie Ulrich for adults newly diagnosed with EoE. Disclaimer: The information provided in this podcast is designed to support, not replace the relationship that exists between listeners and their healthcare providers. Opinions, information, and recommendations shared in this podcast are not a substitute for medical advice. Decisions related to medical care should be made with your healthcare provider. Opinions and views of guests and co-hosts are their own. Key Takeaways: [1:25] Holly introduces today's topic, Being Diagnosed with Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) as an Adult and Cooking with a Limited Diet, and today's guest, Stephanie Ulrich, a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, allergy-friendly recipe developer, and patient advocate who was diagnosed with EoE as an adult. [1:54] Stephanie specializes in supporting people with autoimmune diseases and a wide range of dietary restrictions. She knows what it is like to have a restricted diet. She grew up eating anything, but in her thirties, she was diagnosed with food allergies, EoE, and other autoimmune diseases. The diagnosis that impacts her the most is EoE. [3:40] Stephanie noticed she had bad heartburn and coughing at night when she was trying to sleep for years before she was diagnosed with EoE. A few months before her EoE diagnosis, she started burping all the time. It was embarrassing. Her heartburn was getting worse. She went to a GI doctor who first thought it might be related to IBS. [4:21] The doctor suggested an endoscopy for Stephanie but she put it off. Three months later, when she woke up and took a sip of water, she had the worst pain in her chest that she'd ever experienced. Everything got worse from there. Over the next month, Stephanie basically couldn't eat. She couldn't swallow. It was scary. [4:58] When Stephanie had severe chest pain, her doctor sent her to urgent care. After an EKG, the doctor suggested it was GI-related. Stephanie was directed to a gastroenterologist. She booked an endoscopy. That gave her the diagnosis of EoE. Ryan and Holly relate to Stephanie's symptoms. [5:52] After Stephanie learned her doctor wasn't experienced in treating EoE, she started on a journey to find a different doctor. This included attending an APFED patient education conference. She feels fortunate that she found a new doctor quickly. [7:38] Stephanie uses an elimination diet and medication to treat her EoE. She does not eat the top nine food allergens, plus legumes, corn, most nightshades, most spices, etc. She is in the process of gradually adding food back into her diet in collaboration with her doctor. She is trying to add eight new foods a year. At her lowest point, she was restricted to five foods. Now she can eat at least 50 foods. [8:21] Stephanie takes a swallowed steroid which has helped her expand her diet, so she is happy about that. She tells how good and bad days contrast for her. Food is emotional for her, and bad days are days when she misses the spontaneity of being able to go out and eat whatever she wants. The hardest days are travel days. [9:56] Stephanie is still figuring out how to manage eating while traveling. She's experimenting with shorter trips and getting accommodations with a kitchen included. Her first stop on a trip is the grocery store. She brings a suitcase filled with food and snacks. [11:38] EoE has changed Stephanie's career. She first met Ryan shortly after her diagnosis, when she was working as a landscape architect. The long working hours and significant travel were hard to manage. She spent all weekend prepping meals to eat at work and it was exhausting. [13:01] Stephanie stepped away from her job as a landscape architect. She did freelance work for a few months and then went back to school to become a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner. EoE played a huge role in terms of choosing her career. Now she has a flexible schedule, works from home, and makes food during the day as she needs it. [14:46] The Open Cookbook is where Stephanie shares allergy-friendly recipes and her experiences of living with EoE and other chronic conditions. She has made a lot of connections with people who have EoE and it has been great for her. She meets other people with EoE on her Instagram account. Developing the recipes helped her love food again. [16:33] Stephanie has two recipes that stand out for her. They have personal meaning, as they are similar to recipes from her childhood. The first is Beef Stroganoff, made with coconut cream and coco aminos. Stephanie uses a spiralizer to cut daikon into noodles. [18:42] Stephanie explains her process for creating recipes based on comfort meals people might be missing. She also discusses using a single ingredient in many different ways. She uses butternut squash as an example of a versatile food. [21:05] Stephanie discusses planning the nutritional content of a recipe. She aims for creating meals that balance being nutrient-dense, while also foods that people are happy to eat. She uses gluten-free, grain-free flours, like tigernut flour (from a tuber), and green banana flour. [24:19] Stephanie tries to keep her recipes flexible. She wants them to be accessible and inclusive. She encourages people to adapt recipes on the website to make them their own. Chia egg, flax egg, or gelatin egg are egg substitutes. Carob can be swapped for chocolate or cocoa. You can also filter the recipes by diet types for your needs. [25:46] Some ingredients are more readily available online. [26:17] Stephanie took a little hiatus from developing new recipes but has begun adding new foods to her diet and is starting to experiment with recipes using those ingredients. This year, she also started an online support group for adults who have EoE. [27:05] Stephanie has recently added new foods to her diet, including hemp hearts, flax seeds, and sacha inchi seeds to her diet. Flax seeds and sacha inchi seeds are high in Omega-3. Stephanie has also added chicken to her diet and is enjoying chicken wings. She previously had restricted her meats to turkey, bison, and beef. [28:12] Stephanie has some advice for adults diagnosed with EoE. You don't have to figure everything out right away. Take your time. It's OK to feel grief and loss around your diagnosis. Eventually, it will feel like it's just part of your life and you'll develop a new normal. Establish your boundaries. Connect with other adults who have EoE. [30:15] Stephanie shares advice for the family and friends of someone who has EoE. Please continue inviting them to events. If they are not comfortable, they will politely decline. If they come, they may just bring their own food. It's about continuing to have social connections with family and friends, rather than just about food. [31:40] Would Stephanie have done anything differently? She would like to have been more patient with herself and her family and friends. EoE is a complex disease and it takes a while to understand what it is. Be patient with the process. You'll make mistakes but you will get there. She suggests not limiting yourself in what you can do with EoE. [32:42] Holly thanks Stephanie for sharing her experiences on the podcast to help others. Stephanie thanks APFED for having her on the podcast. [33:01] Stephanie ends by reminding listeners that if you are an adult newly diagnosed with EoE, you are not alone. There are others who are happy to support you. If you need more medical support, keep looking until you find the right medical team for you. It will look different for every single individual. Keep going. You will get there. [33:30] Ryan thanks Stephanie for her advice. Ryan shares resource links for listeners to learn more and connect with Stephanie and with APFED. You should know by now that nothing's what it seems on this show. For example, we don't want to borrow your child forever, just so that Nikki can go to a theme park as the only adult without feeling weird. However this does spark a business idea which we think is a sure fire moneymaker. Plus the rant you never knew you needed about Easter chocolate. Any hippy kids out there who also want to jump on the carob hate train with us? Also... Chocolate devil anyone? Happy Friday legends! Even as consumption of carob is growing globally, orchards are shrinking, leading CarobWay's founder to seek a new and more sustainable model. Carob—once known as a 70s replacement for chocolate—has come into its own, with consumption growing at 5 percent a year. However, orchards are shrinking and there is an increasing shortage of quality ingredients in the market. This has opened up a whitespace not only for supply, but to do so in a new and more sustainable way. Udi Alroy, CEO and co-founder of https://www.carobway.com/ (CarobWay), has taken up the challenge to develop carob intensive cultivation orchards and to produce ingredients using 100% of the carob fruit—from seeds through pods. With decades of experience in the global food and nutraceutical industry, and a passion for supply chain transparency and sustainability, Udi has identified cultivars that produce well in arid climates, and yield abundant ingredients. Tune in to hear more about: Market opportunities for carob—both for food and beverage products and nutraceuticals. How utilising all parts of the carob fruit yields unique new ingredients. Why an eco-supportive model based on long-term partnerships has overt and underlying benefits to business. Inspiration to make greater sustainability commitments across the supply chain. Hello. Hello, Vitality Seekers, please help me welcome Kimberly Baca, a Holistic Health Strategist at Legacy Holistic Health. Kimberly was a former fashion designer is a certified living foods. Chef, a Tony Robbins crew member, a best selling author, and the host of the 365 Health podcast and she is best known as the Naked Veganista so love that. Welcome Kimberly. Thanks Caroline. Thanks for having me. This is going to be so fun. Like, I don't know if we could have any more in common. We both went to fashion school. We both have a culinary background. You got to be a crew member. I have yet to do that, but it's on my list, cause I love Tony Robbins. This is going to be so awesome. I love your title, The Naked Veganista, the fashion inspired name. Tell us a little about your journey because I really find it fascinating. Well, I, you know, always wanted to be a fashion designer since I was little. And I saw one day that movie with Lindsay Wagner, which was called Scruples and I'm like, that's what I want to do. I want to have a beautiful establishment on Rodeo Drive, wherever that was. Cause I was a Michigan girl. So I had no clue where that was. And I was like, I'm going to do that. And I grew up with a family where, you know, blue collar, my dad worked for the steel industry and worked his way up. And eventually he actually bought the steel company, but we were blue collar and traveled around and settled in Michigan. And I grew up just a regular person, but my mom and dad got divorced. I was 12 and they said, You know, oh, we don't have money for you for college. So he could just forget about that. Right. And so what I did was I said, you know what? I going to find a way I'm going to find a way. So I put my mind to work for me and figured out a way I ended up going to a school because I got a scholarship that wasn't for me. I ended up switching to Michigan State University. I graduated with a bachelor's of science and then a minor, which was clothing and textiles. So my degree is in clothing and textiles. And then I was like, how am I going to do this? So I've found before I graduated, I actually was in my fourth year, ready to graduate. I found they had an Institute in Detroit where all of the fashion schools were coming and I said, you know what? I'm going to go there. And. Had to have a portfolio of something, but I didn't, all I had was I had, I was good at drawing. So I created some drawings. I took some new drawing classes in my spare time at night between working three jobs and going to school. And then I presented it and they were like, Do you know what? You're not, you're not Parsons material. You can't, you know, she just like picked it up and threw it. Didn't even really look at it. And I had spent all this time creating this portfolio. I had a three paneled folding screen, long story short. The director was like, you know what? Poopoo on you. I mean, I didn't have the look. I didn't have the money. I didn't have the whatever. And I wasn't from New York. So I was like, I was devastated. You know, I was 22 years. And I was like, this is my dream. You know, I am a great designer. I knew I was a great designer. I just didn't know how to express it. Long story short, I ended up getting into the school, I ended up winning the designer of the year award. I got hired out of school for fortune 500 company as their director of merchandising, uh, as my first technical job, even though I got a summer job and I was making $60 grand a year, I ended up. performing well then the year after that, the competition hired me away from there and we won the designer of the year award again. Wow. And that was for hosiery company. I ended up working for first and then I worked for a Hue, top designer, director for that company. And what happened to me was my work and all of this caught up with me working three jobs, putting myself through school the designing. When you're in a design career, in a school it's, it's all nighters, you know, you really don't sleep much. You don't eat well. I had no idea what to eat, to keep myself healthy or anything. I just ate whatever. And like, Kids do. Right. Uh, and it all caught up to me. So then in my mid twenties, I became completely debilitated and they diagnosed me with what was called fibromyalgia auto immune disorder. And I couldn't even lift my arms. I couldn't walk nothing, so I couldn't even .Work. So my entire dream life, my house, my marriage, my everything pretty much was stripped from me. And that was because of lack of awareness. I changed my whole life to become a health coach, help women specifically to never be put in that position where they have to make a choice between their health and their job or their health and their family, but to really live authentically living healthy every day. And I've been a vegan since the 1997, when I went to my first Tony Robbins Event. I was like completely mesmerized that half the people left for the health day and they didn't count their health as more important than their business and most people don't. And so that's why I have targeted my coaching to people, specifically, women who are overworked, over-busy don't know how to take care of themselves and they're going to eventually lose their health because they've put their business in the forefront of, of everything that needs to be important. I love that and I know exactly what you mean about the Tony Robbins health day, which was probably one of my favorites out of all of them. I went there with such an open mind. It was really excellent. Thank you for sharing all of that. I ended up working in a lingerie company. You end up working in hosiery! Really really crazy. I loved your story. And that is so true, what you said about how people put their health, in the back seat, or they don't even recognize it as something that needs to be in the forefront of life. Um, and I am doing a similar path with trying to help people who've been successful. I'm on the opposite side, I'm trying to head towards the male client, but it is so true. We just don't realize what we have until it's gone. And you know had the fibromyalgia. That must have been just so awful. I can't even imagine being that young. You're a fashion designer. You're doing all that stuff, doing all the things you want to do. And then all of a sudden you can can't hardly walk or feed yourself or do any of those things. It must've been devastating. I can't imagine. Work with the people who are very similar to me, really independent. You know, let's say Type A, wants to be in control, need that structure to keep things together. But really when it comes to health, most people don't know how to do that. They don't know how to integrate it in an effective way, that's sustainable. They can do a first book period of time, the 30 days, the 90 days. But then they pretty much fall apart because some other life event happens and it interrupts the flow and they don't know how to get back to it. So that's what I do. I really help people get that congruency I agree with that too. They know what to do, but it's don't know how to implement it. And then there's a huge difference you can know, but that doesn't mean you can actually make it work. Today, we're going to talk about how to feel 10 years younger, who doesn't want to do that. Um, and, and you need some kind of like a banner, a title or something, because I know you had a baby at 50 and you look fabulous and we're the same age. It's mind blowing so what would you say on how to regain your youthfulness? I think the key is I, I know one of my secrets and people are like, what do you do? How do you do this? You know, I mean, I really don't wear much makeup. I really just do everything naturally. I make all my own products for my hair and my skincare and everything. And I've been doing that for years since I didn't want to put anything toxic in my body or on my body. So make sure that you're aware of what you're actually doing now that could be causing advanced aging or from you from actually looking your most youthful.. And the other thing is, is that. I have a mindset that I have had since I programmed myself to believe this and I continue to tell myself, and now it's just part of who I am. It's not like a mantra I have to say every day, but it's like, I look and feel at least 15 years younger than my chronological age. That's just who I am. So I will always look at least 15 younger years younger than my chronological age. So to begin if that's something that you can't really believe that the affirmation is not going to be effective, you actually have to believe in affirmation. Part of it has to be true. So. Somebody starts out with five years. Okay. And they can, they can grab that. They can grab hold of that 10 years. Right. And then build up a mine used to be 10 years. Right. And then everybody comes, kept telling me, I looked at least 15 years younger. So I'm like, I'm changing my belief. My belief is actually working better. So I, I had said originally 10 years younger and I changed it about four or five years ago to at least 15 years younger because I seem to look like that getting younger. And I think the other thing is, is that to enjoy what we're doing more. I know that I'm guilty of that. Like I'm just too serious, a lot of the times in the past, up until now. So changing our words as well, catching ourselves with what we say and up until now, I've been pretty serious about most of the things, because I'm very direct. And very, you know, one minded when it comes to certain things. So to, to that effect, I was talking yesterday to somebody about it, really. I think having my daughter at 50 years old has actually contributed to my youthfulness because I am more playful. I am more like in spur of the moment. I do more things that are active in terms of like, just play things. Laughter things that I wasn't doing before too serious, all the time kills our joy and kills our liveliness. So I think that is a super secret. So besides believing, creating a belief structure where we believe we look and feel at least whatever age you want to feel, right. So I felt my best, not in my twenties, I don't want to feel bad again. That was painful to me, but in my thirties, right? So in my late thirties I felt looked and it was absolutely the best. And that's where I want my belief to stay. How I'm looking, how I'm feeling. I'm still able to do everything I do, even though I went through cesarean pregnancy. I was debilitated cause I had two herniated disc twice. I had herniated disc in my back and those have healed. Okay. So how do these things heal? We have to program our mind to do the healing. We have to tell ourselves, even if we just barely believe it or even don't believe it yet, but by reprogramming over and over again, we will program our brain to begin to take root of the truth and begin to create and manifest it in a solid form. That's such a, what? I've heard that so many times that it's like, it doesn't even necessarily have to be real, just like a smile, just slap one on and soon enough it'll, it'll turn to be the real thing. But in the meantime, your brain really doesn't know the difference. So just do it anyway and have those affirmations. You definitely do not look your age and I would say 15 years, maybe even still a little conservative. Uh, yeah, you definitely can preach to the choir. So vegan since 1997 and then you tell yourself, " I look and feel 15 years younger" than my biological age. I might just have to adopt that there, Ms. Kimberly. Um, and I at least, yeah, at least. So it's 15 or more. Okay. Okay. At least I'm writing that down. All right. And enjoy, I agree with you that I am guilty of the taking life too serious. And I did that for way too many years, but I'm on a new path now. Whew. Give us a couple of success stories of clients maybe that you have dealt with and, and how they have benefited wonderful concept that you have. Well, I'll take a current client. She's actually 74 years old. And, her cardiologist after one month of working with me is blown away. He actually focuses on a plant-based to help his clients to, uh, reduce the cardiological damage or whatever is going on for them. So he was just really blown away because he promotes it already, but he does not see results like this in people over 70, put it that way. First of all, in a month, she had a weight reduction of 16 pounds, which is great cause that weight reduction is not only inflammation, but also the unhealthy accumulation around vital organs, especially at the, in age, past the age of 60, but vital organs start to accumulate fat and they start to accumulate toxic residue. If it hasn't been, focused on as a healing protocol consistently for that person. And most people, it's not been a consistent focused protocol to get toxins out. So she has been moving these very healthfully in the timing over four weeks and now is in a momentum. So her body now is in a momentum and we slowly add things in our program that we focus on with Legacy Holistic Health. Isn't a deprivation mindset. We do not teach the body about deprivation because whenever you deprive something or you resist something, it will persist. And if you deprive the body, it goes seeking for what it's being deprived of. More of it now. So our goal is to add things in it's an additive type of perspective, where we give the body, we give the mind, we give the craving what it's asking for, but in a healthy way. And so I add things in for. And then we slowly do things to increase movement. So now she, where she barely could even move any limbs before she's jumping on a rebounder, she's doing hit workouts, which is high intensity interval training workouts that are designed specifically for her, where she's doing high knees and high kick. Like literally, we don't have to work out an hour to get results. So most of the people that are over the age of 40 think I got to work hard. I got to work long. I got to be in the gym wall one to two hours, but that's not true. So we've just created a customized program. And that's what I do in my one-on-one coaching, so that everything is geared to exactly what you can do, stretching just enough to get results and then moving in, in a guided fashion. So you accelerate those results. As we moved through the coaching. That is so crazy good. I don't know what I'm more excited about either that you've helped us 74 year old person or that a 74 year old person. Was wanting to change at 74! I think. Talk about a win-win, that's fabulous. I absolutely adore the whole concept. And it is a lot harder, at that age and, and may lose that much weight. And then astounded her doctor, ! Any other success stories stand out? Really, I mean, I have a client who really began as a high level executive, multi six figure executive. And, uh, she decided that was that the life for her anymore. She really wanted to follow the path that God had chosen for her. And really. Uh, the money wagon, wasn't the wagon. And she wanted to spend time with her or her family. And at 40 years old, she became pregnant with another boy and, she wanted to make changes, but really didn't know what to do. So I guided her. The type of lifestyle she could have if she focused on healthy things that she puts in her life, getting rid of the toxic elements, surrounding her and putting in nutrient rich foods and having a system to be able to do that while she was working. But then as she transitioned out of working, she was able to implement even more. And as she did that, She changed her whole lifestyle and all of her kids too. And now they all eat healthy foods. They love it. And which they're astonished actually that the kids love eating this way versus eating the old burgers and fries and chips, take out the things that they were doing. And I think part of it has to do with when you're intentional and this is something I train people when you're intentional about it. How you live, there's this high level of vibration energy that comes into your life that brings in community, brings them love. It brings in just joy that wasn't there before. And I think that's the difference is when you actually focus on your health and make it part of how you're actively integrating life in a healthy way, everything else changes too. So good, that amazing you can transform lives like that and, and do it like one-on-one and really custom couture. I'll use the word couture for you because you're the fashionista. Talk to me a little bit about the certification and the living food chef that piques my interest. Maybe do you have like a favorite recipe or something that our listeners could make themselves at home try to get that nutrient density? Yeah. I became a living foods chef because I wanted to understand the implication of food on our health and how we could get more food nutrients instead of supplements or, uh, you know, just what the normal people are used to doing to get vitamins and the elements that we need in our body. Instead of using it in a pill form or a bottle form I really wanted to learn and how to integrate that in meals. So we don't have to make extra time and we don't have to spend extra money. That is what it is about saving time and money. Is what I help people do best, while they get healthy and stay that way. And so, uh, one of the best things to do is get avocado in your diet. Every day. A lot of people are like, oh, fat, fat, fat. They're so afraid of fat, but you have to know, you have to have fat for your brain to function. You have to have fat for your ligaments and your joints to have the lubrication. They need to not only feel healthy, but to avoid things like arthritis. Arterial arterial issues that will clog the body. We have to have healthy fat. We have to have healthy nutrients. So my favorite favorite recipe to trick people with is avocado pudding and it's chocolate pudding. It looks and feels like chocolate mousse, but it's using avocado. And my secret ingredient, it's not the avocado. The secret ingredient is cayenne pepper. So you take avocados, make sure that they're, you know, very soft, how you pick a ripe avocado. If you don't know, is I usually like to pick an avocado that has the little, Naval on it already in it, and you just flick the little navel out. And if it's a light, brownish color to darker brown color, Okay. light brown or greeny. It's not right. Okay. You feel soft or something, but it's not ripe. The whole thing isn't ripe. So some parts might be harder, whatever. So that's one of the best ways. And I don't like to buy avocados that don't have that because that is where mold can grow. Ah, grow in that. So, um, if it doesn't have it, make sure you look there. Um, and if you don't have the little Naval part, it's okay to buy it. If you think it's ripe. Again, you want, do you want a soft avocado, but then you don't want to take your knife through the avocado Naval part because then if there is mold there, it will drag them all through your whole avocado. So that's a chef tip. Okay. So go to the left or the right of the little Naval card and cut your knife all around in a circle and then twist and open the article. And get the pit out by taking her a knife, gently tap, tap, tap, stick it into the pit, turn your avocado and the nut at the same time. And the nut will be stuck in the knife. Slide it off of the side of the sink. And then you can scoop out with a spoon, just scoop it out, throw it in a blender. Then you're going to put in a quarter cup of cacao powder. Cacao powder is raw cocoa powder. Um, you don't want the alkalized cooked cocoa powder because it has less nutrients in it and usually a higher level of potential to have fillers put in that. So get cacao powder, spelled C a C a O cacao, and one quarter cup of that. Then you're going to put. What I use as no sugar. So you can either use a food as your sugar, which would be two dates. You want to get the medjool dates that are rich. They're really delicious and smushy and good. You open them up, you take the pit out, make sure you count your dates and put your pits aside, not in your food, cause don't go in your whole pudding. Right? And then, uh, one to two tablespoons of water and blend that up and puree it. That is your avocado pudding, simple and super easy. Now you put one teeny weeny, pinch of cayenne pepper in it, and it makes it taste like cooked pudding. That's the secret. Now, if you don't want to use any sugar at all, you can use a Lakanto. You can use a maple Lakanto, a sugar-free option and they have Lakanto L a K a N T O in a maple syrup type of container. And you can just put a tablespoon of that in there. Now. Uh, Lakanto is a monk fruit, sweetener, and monk fruit can be up to 10 times as sweet as regular sugar. So you can try a teaspoon to see if that sweet enough for you up to a tablespoon. If you're using pure maple syrup, you can use a tablespoon. Um, so test it out. Less is more initially with every recipe and then blend it. If it doesn't have enough to blend it. Cause if you don't have a high speed blender, we shipped down a little bit, take the spoon out, blend it again, smush it down, blend it again, or put a teeny little bit more water in it. You don't want it to be running. You want it to be fluffy. And that is one of the best recipes you can dehydrate that and make a fruit roll-ups. Oh, my goodness, 50 rolls with that. It tastes so good for kids and it absolutely no chocolate. I used to substitute for a child was a client of mine, he couldn't have chocolate, it's a Carob, Carobpowder powder. Gotcha. Cara powder doesn't have any caffeine in it. Doesn't have any cocoa in it. People could be allergic to that. So use Cara powder and it tastes equally as delicious. Well, I have everything, but the avocados and I'm going to whole foods in a little bit. So I'm so picking up some good avocados and I'll be whipping up some of that tonight. I did not. I use Monkfruit but I have never heard of the Lakanto. Lakanto that's a brand, correct. Okay. That's a brand. That is so cool. I do know that it is sweeter, than sugar. So thank you for that amazing recipe. And I know, you know, some secret about black Sesame seeds... So this is a secret for all women who don't want gray hair. The secret is you grind up your black Sesame seeds. It needs to be black Sesame seeds. Okay. There's nutrient in the black Sesame seeds that help with hair. The minerals remineralizing the body. So it helps with much more than hair, but actually right here is caused by the stripping of the minerals out of the body. And as we age, our body uses more minerals. And it doesn't process minerals as well. So we need to increase the level of minerals we take. So we can get that in the black Sesame seeds, grinding them up and we can make a tea, like just soak them in water and then drink that. Or we can make a paste. We can make a black Sesame paste, like a hummus, and we can eat it with. Okay. I don't have a recipe off the top of my head for that, but if anybody wants it, they can message me and get the recipe. But that is a black Sesame has higher minerals than the white Sesame. So use the black Sesame. And so you can use that any time, uh, for increasing, if you want to do that, you want to drink that every day. It's just a black Sesame liquid of, uh, soaked in the success. Me and you drink the water or eat the paste, a tablespoon or so a day, make a black Sesame hummus. There's many ways you can do that and have some hair transformation. You will definitely see that. And your body will be remineralized very quickly. Okay. I have black Sesame seeds, and I know organic black Sesame Seeds, aren't the cheapest in the world, but you know what? They are a whole hell of a lot cheaper than going to get your hair done . I hate getting my hair done cause I know how toxic it is. It is just not good for you. So that's just like a double win. You are just such a wealth of information. I do have one last question for you. If there was one thing in this world that you could eliminate, what would it be and why? You know, there's so many things, there's so many things. I, I'm not sure I can pick one, pick two, two. I think, I think the first one would be. People's " lack of awareness". And what I mean by lack of awareness is people seem to want to believe what they want to believe. And if people were just open to possibility, I think the world would be a different place like this with a doctor telling somebody they have to do something or a doctor telling somebody they have so much time to live or a doctor telling somebody you have this illness and you'll have it for the rest of your life. If I were to believe that I would never walk for the rest of my life, I would be on drugs and medication and having somebody to have to take care of me for the rest of my life. That's where I was when I was 27, 28, 29 years old dealing with figuring out how to. Through this illness, which I felt was toxicity and poisoning of my body. If I wasn't of the right state of mind to tell these doctors to keep their diagnosis, to keep what they're claiming for me, that would be the rest of my life and keep their drugs. Cold Turkey. I'm not taking any more of these things. I know they're poisoning me and you can just take it all. And I'm going to figure this out. If I wasn't strong enough in my mind to have that openness to know, there's another way I think I would be. I wouldn't be here today. I wouldn't have impacted the lives I have. So we all have this power in us to impact lives. But if we don't let ourselves be open to possibility, then we don't. And then the second thing is, is really, getting rid of limiting beliefs. When people have these limiting beliefs of who they can be, what they can do, what people have said to them. If people said I couldn't go to college, I wouldn't be able to go to college. You're never going to be a fashion designer. Like that woman told me that I won the designer of the year at her school while she was the chairman. You know, I mean, if I would have let them to put their limiting beliefs on me, I would've never be where I am and have the impact that I've had in my life for people. Right. You're such an inspiration and you have so much knowledge... i, concur and I'm wondering if I feel the same way because we're both Tony Robbins fans. When I went to UPW. That is truly the essence that I came away with was that I don't need to understand everything. All I need to know, like from here forward is like, if things help people like be open, be open to information that I might not have deemed, um, worthy of listening to at one point in my life. But, um, that, that is what I walked away with was change. Can be super good, to try different things and like you said to be open-minded and that boy, if more people were like that, Ooh, this world would be a nicer place to live. Tell our listeners where they can contact you. Well, I have a free gift. If anybody wants to go to recipe hacker secrets.com, you can get, how to set up your healthy kitchen. And I thank you so much for sharing your story and all your insights. Cause, I learned a few things today. I can't wait to implement black Sesame Seeds and go make some chocolate avocado pudding. Jesus told a story about a father and his two sons. The younger son asked his father for his inheritance. In first-century Hebrew culture, the son may as well have said, “I wish you were dead, so I can get what's mine.” Those listening would have thought little of the son. I imagine the tension rippling through the crowd as Jesus spoke. When He tells of the father giving his hateful son his full share of the inheritance, I picture the crowd squirming, fists tightening, some spitting on the ground. “How could any son do such a thing to his father?” and “How could that man give his treasure that fool. He is no son.” A reasonable man would surely have sent him away with nothing and would have disowned him. But the gracious father gave his son half of all he had, then he watched him leave. The young man left, but he not only left his family, he left his town and even his country. He spent his father's wealth on pleasure, and when his money ran out, so did his friends. I imagine a few smiles among those listening as Jesus told the story. “He got what he deserved.”But life got worse for the young man and everyone around him. Famine. In Western culture, famine is a foreign concept. We've had moments when there were a few empty shelves, no toilet paper, our favorite restaurant was closed because one of the workers got COVID. But we've never experienced famine. No food. Empty stores. Dried-up fields and wells. Everyone scrapes to survive. Everyone. Even the great depression did not match the gravity of a famine in the ancient world. They had no infrastructure to safely or effectively ship food across long distances. Even those who had prepared and stored grains and dried meats would only survive for so long. Famine meant desperation and a fight to survive. The young man had nothing, no one, and nowhere to go. He found work feeding pigs. As Jesus told the crowd about the young man tossing Carob pods to pigs, I expect there were knowing smiles and head nods. Feeding swine gave them one more reason to despise this wayward fool and one more thing to make him unclean and unworthy to enter the temple courts. You could say he was unworthy to approach his father. He was even unworthy to approach his father's house. But his father waited, not for a wayward fool, but for his lost son. And as his son stared at the dried-out pods, he realized the pigs were eating while he was starving. Starvation brings the kind of delirium that makes dirt-covered, tasteless pods seem like food. The young man broke down. “These pigs eat better than me. My father's servants eat better than me.” No money. No food. Nothing and no one to call his own. He left that far-off country wearing the stench of defeat and made the long journey home. Having wished his father dead, I can't imagine he expected any sort of welcome. He may not have even expected eye contact or entrance into his father's house, but he hoped for food and a place to sleep.I picture the father waiting, climbing to the rooftop each evening, watching the distant hill. Hoping. Praying. Finally, after who knows how many years, a silhouette crests the hill. His pulse rises. “My son!” It's him. He hikes up his cloak and his robe and sprints toward him.“Welcome home, my son.”The lost son was found. The lost sheep was restored to the flock. And the lost coin was returned to the its set. But Jesus hadn't finished yet. He had directed these three stories to the Scribes and Pharisees who had ridiculed him for receiving sinners and eating with them. They were the older. They lived in the presence of the Father but didn't know Him, didn't love Him, and despised His love for His wayward son.Even so, the Father loved them and opened His heart to their wandering hearts if only they would come home as well.

Rita is out for a walk through the neighborhood, admiring all of the plants, gardens, and bushes that her neighbors have planted and cared for through the years. Her walk reminds her of another neighborhood with a special carob tree and a tale of two neighbors. The Carob Tree is a Jewish folk tale retold by PJ Library and presented to families here in audio form and as part of a special PJ Library December 2020 gift. Jewish tradition emphasizes both taking care of the here-and-now and creating a better world for generations to come. PJ Library's special December gift invites families to “plant for today” with an at-home growing activity and “plant fortomorrow” through a tree donation campaign– two ways of highlighting for children the miracle of growth and the value of shmirat hateva(responsibility for the earth).Episode CreditsHave I Got a Story For You is a production of PJ LibraryExecutive producers: Meredith Lewis, Alli ThresherDirector: Alli ThresherAdditional production: Craig RosseinWebsite design: Christina RizerAudio editing, mixing and mastering: Peter MooreScore: Peter MooreRecorded at Palace of Purpose Studios in Malden, MA.Story editor: Alli ThresherThe Carob Tree: A Jewish Folktale retold by Naomi Shulman and Danny Paller with illustrations by Sabina Hahn. We talk a lot about resilience and how to move forward when life throws us a curve ball. My guest today is the living embodiment of what resilience truly is. On this episode of Authentic Living with Roxanne, we welcome Carob Mars who is a former foster child and despite the odds has found her way to happiness. Carob is a veteran of the foster system, who despite many obstacles has found her way to Happy. On her new blog, podcast and YouTube channel, she shares practical doable ideas and stories to help you too, put your past behind you, Rise Up! and succeed at life on your terms. Authentic Touch Points: Carob’s journey through the foster care system.2:30 The impact of trauma as a young child.6:00 How to keep moving forward.10:00 Learning to give to yourself.18:00 Finding your support system.22:30 Don’t let trauma define you.26:00 There’s no “right way” to recover.31:30 The past is gone...34:00 A survivor of every kind of abuse, Carob walked to her local police station at just 8 years old and started the foster care process. She was never adopted and aged out at 18 years of age. Over the years Carob has overcome many obstacles to create her own slice of a modest "good life" and believes that we are all capable of thriving. She created the platform 'Age Out Rise Up" to reach out to former fosters of all ages and encourage them to move past their bad histories and choose to rise! This week on Yes But Why, we talk to podcaster, activist and arts educator, Carob Mars. Carob Mars is the creator of “Age Out. Rise Up!”, a podcast by and for survivors of childhood trauma, especially former foster children, who refuse to let their past define them. In our conversation, Carob shares with me some of the darker moments of her life and the ways in which she has used art to process them. She says, “there’s never been a time that [she hasn’t] been a storyteller and a performer.” She is also a great producer of plays. After going to an acting conservatory, Carob organized a Shakespeare in the Park series in Utah; she has directed her son’s elementary school play for many years; and, most recently, she has been teaching 4H performing arts via Zoom. Carob launched “Age Out. Rise Up!” on Mother’s Day this year. Since then, she has populated her podcast feed and YouTube channel with an empowering message to disenfranchised youth, newly released from foster care. Age Out Rise Up's mission is to enable survivors to set and reach personal goals and live their best lives. Support Carob Mars by subscribing to “Age Out. Henry went on vacation to a Carob factory! He visited a tourist attraction called Carobana, and discovered that one of the owners, Jean Hamey, had a lot more to talk about than just carob! She and her husband Ian operate Carobana, which is a tourist attraction, and a factory, which manufactured Carob coated treats. If you have never seen carob, it is a large seed pod of the carob tree. We actually have them in San Diego where I (Kathe) live. First you remove the seeds. Then you dry and powder the pod. Jean explains the rest of the process in the interview. Jean agreed to talk about her carob organization with Henry. She and her husband inherited the place after her in-laws passed away. They now have a successful manufacturing, retail and tourism business. Much of the interview focuses on the development of the enterprise, and Jean’s unique business skills. As far as the carob business, Ian has built much of the machinery, and persistence and hard work have produced a steady growth which has resulted in the success Carabana is today. A couple of things to know about carob are: * The pod not only contains many small beans, but also a semi-sweet pulp. * These pods contain iron, magnesium, calcium, along with vitamins A, B2, B3, and D. * Carob pods are used as a cocoa substitute for chocolate flavoring. It doesn't taste like exactly like chocolate but it does work as a substitute. * On a diet? Carob contain just 1/3rd of the calories of chocolate. * Even if you are allergic to chocolate, you can usually eat Carob. Henry asked Jean what she was going to do after her imminent retirement. And boy does she have plans! Not only has she been running a business all these years, but she also does book-binding, writes children's books, AND writes craft books as well. So she has a lot going on. Have you ever heard of “Quilling”? I, Kathe, had never heard of this before, but Jean has written a book on it Quilling Beauties of the Bush. You may have heard of it, but it's basically a way to make beautiful 3D pictures out of paper. Basically, you use strips of paper and then roll or shape them, and glue them together. Then you loop, curl, and twist the paper until it makes something beautiful. Quilling creates greeting cards, jewelry, or pretty much anything that you want to make in a 3D manner. I (Kathe) found the quilling part of the interview to be fascinating. It was fun to learn a little about a hobby that I'd never heard of. Of course once I looked it up, I realized that I had seen the finished works of these artists. If you are in Australia you can purchase Jean's tasty treats at http://www.carobana.com.au/. And you can purchase her quilling books anywhere in the world on Amazon. Have you ever done quilling or eaten carob? Let us know what you think in the comments below. Special Thanks to: * Angie Strehlow who helps us get great guests that help us with our retirement lifestyle while keeping everything on track…and helps with these show notes! * Les Briney, my husband, and Danny Ozment of Emerald City Pro who edits the show and makes my guests and me sound terrific * Henry Shapiro, host of Retired Excited that airs on Fridays * YOU for telling your friends about the show, leaving comments below, and sharing episodes you really like on Facebook, and reviewing the show on iTunes This post about Retirement and Retirement Lifestyle first a...

Breed the blue chocobo with the green chocobo using another Carob nut to make a black chocobo. Fly to the Icicle Inn. Fight on the chocobo tracks until attacked by a chocobo with two Jumpings. Use the greens on the chocobo, kill the jumpings, and send the chocobo back to the stables. Travel to Goblin Island. Fight in random battles until you are attacked by a goblin, then Steal from the goblin to acquire a "Zeio" nut. Breed the chocobo you found near Icicle Inn with the black chocobo, using the Zeio nut to make a gold chocobo. Ride the gold chocobo until you find a small island at the north-east corner of the map. On the island you will get the "Knights of the Round" materia.

Carob is a great alternative to chocolate. Compared to chocolate it has higher calcium count (three times as much), no caffeine content, nor fat, and presents your taste buds with a different experience. It's also high in Iron, Vitamin B, Phosphorus, Magnesium, fiber and protein. Top injury sites for the long distance triathletes includes lower back (17.9%), Achilles tendons (14.3%), and knees (14.2%). Among the short to intermediate distance triathletes, most injuries occurred in the knees (44%), calf (20%), hamstrings (20%), and lower back (20%). A group of healthy, active individuals were instructed to cut back on their activity for 3 consecutive days. What they found was that their blood sugar levels spiked 26% more than it normally would have, and that the spikes increased slightly over each successive day. ----------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: Audio Question from Jennifer: Is liposuction an option or a last resort? Audio Question from Jake: 15 weeks out from Ironman with chronic calf strain. Eric asks: I've been hearing a lot about P.A.P. training and was hoping you could help define what it is and how it may help endurance athletes. Andrei asks: I keep hearing about how after an workout you have to eat to replenish the glycogen storage. Also, during a long training run or a race, you have to ingest carbs to top your glycogen storage. My question is if you can do this with fat or protein, not carbs. Can I just eat fat and protein after an workout to restore my glycogen levels? How about during the workout? Hosanna asks: To what degree does eating unsoaked nuts, seeds affect the bioavailability of nutrients? I was eating a dried fruit, nut and seed mix daily as a significant portion of my diet until I read to limit intake substantially on the paleodietlifestyle website. jeffyt01 wrote: I listened to your podcast with Phil Maffetone and was wondering what your thoughts are on his 180 formula vs how you lay out the heart rate training zones in your Dominator plan. Also, do you need to do more volume when using Maffetone's method? Jack asks: In training for different tri distances, what distances you would recommend for a long swim, long ride and a long run? Also, what sort of bricking do you recommend most? I am especially interested in the Olympic tri distance. Josh writes:I'm a cat 1 cyclist, really pushing myself this year to get some big results. I'm 25 years old, my coach has me doing some solid high intensity intervals and some longer endurance rides and my fitness is much higher than previous years. I supplement with 4000 IU of vitamin D, a multi, fish oil, and EPO-boost daily. As you know, watts per kilo is the gold measurement of fitness in the sport. My coach and I are obviously working to bring the watts up, but I'm struggling to get the weight down. I've been stuck around 170-173 lbs and 10%ish BF forever, I'm an all rounder type cyclist and 5'11"!!!! It's getting frustrating. I can't seem to break through that barrier. I've counted calories, went paleo over the last few years. I'm still gluten free, and was pretty pleased to find that I was following your food pyramid pretty decently before you publishing it. I've had blood work done, and everything is normal. Just can't figure out how to lose the stubborn weight so I can down to 7-8% for my first races. I can't get that "vacuumed out look" like other guys in the sport. I have some stubborn fat around my stomach I think is the problem. I used a body metrix system also. Any suggestions? I created my company when my girls were ages 3 and 1 and I was trying to find something to help them get ready for school. I am not a teacher or educator, and yet I created a book used by schools. I didn't create the alphabet, numbers, colors or shapes but found a way to repackage it for parents, kids and teachers. With a telephone and a computer, I created www.cedarvalleypublishing.com. 10% of all profits are donated to literacy foundations and back to schools. By donating back to a school, they see my books and want to write grants to purchase more! I am the author and publisher of Let's Get Ready For Kindergarten! & Let's Get Ready For First Grade! Both books are award-winning, state-approved and used inside homes and schools across the nation. Created by a mom, they are currently used in over 350 school districts from Portland, Maine to Portland, Oregon and in libraries and head start programs all across the country. Parents, kids and grandparents all love them because they are not storybooks or workbooks; they are books meant to be read over and over that cover the curriculum for Kindergarten and First Grade. In fall, I will be releasing the highly anticipated Spanish/English edition of Let's Get Ready For Kindergarten! iA prepararse para kindergarten! My kids think it is hilarious that I am writing a Spanish book without being able to read or write the language. As my 7 year old says, "just hire a translator, duh, anyone can do anything!" I am a mom inspired by Oprah to change education. This has become my passion! My mantra is if two brothers from Ohio can change the face of aviation, that why can't a mom, inspired by Oprah change education at the core! Thirty-eight states are discussing all day 4 year-old Kindergarten because kids are not coming to school prepared. But where are the public service announcements telling parents the 7 things they need to know for Kindergarten testing: the alphabet all mixed up, number to 10 all mixed up, basic shapes, colors, coins, counting objects to 10 and how far they can count to 100? Schools purchase my books in bulk to help get parents, kids and teachers all be on the same page of Kindergarten and First Grade! Now I have a national platform speaking to educators, schools, parents and kids! This is a true family business! Who better to help me write Let's Get Ready For Second Grade! than my 2nd and 4th grader! And, as most families encounter, Nicole's baby daughter Sara eventually faced a diaper rash that would not quit. This sparked Nicole's ingenious solution: she cut the feet off of a pair of snowboarding socks and fitted Sara, from hip to ankle, with a homemade set of legwarmers. Sara was now able to be diaper-free, rash-less, crawl safely on her knees, and debut what would become a trend-setting fashion accessory. Founded in April 2005, BabyLegs is now an international company, with products in more than 50 countries. BabyLegs retail from $12 for an original pair, to $28 for Organic Merino Wool designs. BabyLegs was awarded the "2007 Best New Brand" Earnie Award by Earnshaw's for excellence in children's wear design, and recognized with the World Trade Center Tacoma's "Marco Polo" Award for pioneering trade. A few reasons parents and kids will love BabyLegs this holiday season: Make diaper changing a breeze! Fun and festive fashion accessory. Promotes independence while potty training. Keeps legs warm; great with carriers and strollers! Protects soft knees from harsh surfaces. For sports, playgrounds, and dance classes. Comfortable alternative to tights. Allows for "nakedy bottom" time! Instant alternative to undershirt when worn on arms! Wear over bandages to keep child from removing. Helps little socks stay on.

Today’s solution is an antibacterial extract from the leaves of the carob tree (the source of a popular chocolate substitute) that could fight the microbe responsible for the serious form of food poisoning called listeriosis. The research appears in ACS’ Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
