This episode we speak with Dr Kristy Seymour, founder and head trainer at Circus Stars on the Gold Coast.Founded in 2013 it was the very first circus school in the world to be dedicated to children on the autism spectrum. Circus Stars classes are inclusive, creative, risky and challenging all in a fun and supportive gentle environment and in 2017 Circus Stars was awarded an Autism Queensland Creative Futures Recognition award. Inspired by Dr Reg Bolton's theory of the 5 key elements of why circus works for children, the Circus Stars Program aims to help young people have fun, learn to take safe risks, build trust in teamwork, encourage individuality, and explore working hard on their skills.Working her way up from a 19 year old drama and physical theatre student to a professional circus artist, Kristy has worked and trained with Flipside Circus, CIRCA & Vulcana Circus and now also lectures at Griffith University and Griffith College on the Gold Coast.Dr Seymour has worked tirelessly to create the academic research to prove the Circus Stars method to the clinical and autism communities to the point where her work has been added to Cirque du Soleil's social development department, Cirque du Monde and is now a recommended and reputable program for families and also practitioners looking to expand their own practice by attending the annual Circus Stars' Professional Development Series. What we love about Kristy and her work with Circus Stars is that her own love of circus - the rebellious, adventurous spirit of circus - embodies everything that she does and infuses her belief that children of all abilities, but especially autism, should have access to the skills, risk and freedom that circus provides. The Circus Stars Professional Development Series - July 25 & 31, 2021. Ep. 62 Courtney is a certified life and leadership coach and an award-winning speaker. She is passionate about helping women create lives that they are excited about. One of her super powers is getting people to do things they never thought possible through the power of PLAY and FUN. Through many of the challenges of 2020 I channeled Courtney's superpower and stepped way out of my comfort zone! Her passion for life has created a HUGE ripple effect! During our conversation I learned that things didn't start out that way. In 2009 Courtney had a one-year-old in daycare, she had just moved into a new house, and she had just gotten a new job. To say that the learning curve was steep was an understatement, but like so many new moms, she really felt like she could (and should be able to) handle it! After a few months into her new job, her world got rocked in a way that she could never have anticipated…she learned that her mom had terminal cancer. Her grief, (and her children) changed her perspective on life. No longer feeling obligated to do anything, Courtney decided to follow her fascinations. She went back to school for psychology and trained as a coach. Then, after years of learning and processing her own experiences, she finally said yes to the one training that would change her life forever…She enrolled in Circus School! The best part about that decision is that she didn't have to do it alone. Over the years of searching and rediscovering real joy in her life, she built, and surrounded herself with, a community of Kick-Ass ladies. From that moment on she made a commitment to continue her wild FUN adventures with the Kick-Ass Ladies, knowing that by challenging herself, and others, to experience more fun, she could overcome any obstacle! It's been 7 years and every month she invites more women into her world where PLAY + JOY take centerstage. Circus Voices, a podcast brought to you by CircusTalk, is pleased to present an interview with Jean-Luc Martin on Audio Explorations with the Editor. Our guest on the podcast today is Jean-Luc Martin, founder and executive director of San Diego Circus School. Martin is a graduate of the National circus school in Montreal, and during the course of his performance career he performed with the Pickle Family Circus, Circus Knie and Cirque du Soleil. The young Martin started life as an adventurer-- kayaking, rock climbing and hiking. He worked for Outward Bound, Search & Rescue Northern Ontario, and Yosemite National Park before he discovered circus. He has the opportunity to earn his true circus chops by working with The Pickle Family Circus where Martin says, "I trained teeterboard, acrobatics, trapeze, and handstands, and after two years of hard, dedicated, focused work, I decided to test my abilities and audition for École Nationale de Cirque. I was accepted, and after two years at ENC, Cirque du Soleil hired me. Fifteen years later, I retired from circus and turned to Hollywood, becoming a stunt man and a film producer. During this time, I met my wife Mara, had two children, and then decided to leave the rat race of 18 hour days of film producing, to go back to my passion, which was circus. San Diego Circus Center was officially born in 2012, and I’m looking forward to continuing, and always building, a formidable circus school in North America." Listen in for Martin's sage advice on balancing one's career, life-training balance, finding your circus talent, and more. He also shares the strategies that led to the circus education programs and curriculum he offers at San Diego Circus Center Academy, including the Pre-preparatory (youth), Preparatory (emerging professional), Pro-track (artists advancing skills), and their 5-week Master Youth Intensive course. Circus Voices is brought to you by CircusTalk, the leading online network and resource for the international circus industry. At CircusTalk, our motto is "We give circus a voice," because we share circus related information from around the globe from a variety of voices. Not only do we talk about the physicality of it all, but the mental barrier that many people are confronted with when they first begin! Tia unravels what it is like to not only be an athlete in this world, but how to be a coach .. and an incredible one at that. PLUS we get to talk all things travel as we dive deeper into Tia's personal life where she lived in Malaysia, stood in the smoke during the burning of the palms, and how talking to people across the world has given her such a gracious amount of knowledge and respect for the human experience. Welcome to another day in Sandi's favourite room, which is stuffed to the gills with books.Today, Sandi looks at the birth of circus and the characters who played a role in shaping the familiar show we see today. Philip Astley and his wife Patty Jones staged the first circus on a site believed to now house St Thomas' Hospital in London and unsurprisingly far more is written about Philip than Patty, who must have been a hugely accomplished equestrian and entertainer in her own right. The role of women in entertainment is of course played down throughout history, for example, it may surprise you to know that there were plenty of female jesters in royal court? You may also not be aware of Joseph Haines who made the career jump from member of parliament to comedian? Well, Sandi's books hold many surprises and so prepare to be amazed and remember... Dali shares stories about growing up upper class and deciding to become a self-sustaining street artist, how he dealt with determining if he was performing or begging, going home and finding out who he really wanted to be, fighting the status quo and finding out who he is, education, politics, and the media in Spain, youth's connection to anime, and circus performing secrets and stories (yes, the sound got $h!tty, Sorry!).
China, like the Ukraine, is known for bringing out incredible handbalancers and circus acrobats, some of them very young. Ellen Grow, who I met at the Bali Handstand Retreat spent 18 months training there at the Beijing International Art School. So I asked her if she would be willing to share her experience. Even though she was there about ten years ago, I thought it was worth sharing with you guys. Today Ellen performs with her group One Fell Swoop Circus. Actually they are currently doing shows at the fringe festival! So go watch them if you have a chance! Also go and check out Ellen’s Instagram: @ellen_jayne Feel free to leave any comments in the section down below. This episode is about a little hero I met here in Kiev. Kim just finished her first year at the Circus School and tells us about what she's experiencing, being in one of the best schools (or probably even THE best school) for handbalance. I knew her a little from Instagram, but when I met her in real life, I was fascinated by her spirit and persona. She is like a little ball of energy with big ambitions and a lot of courage. What struck me the most was that she was so brave to choose her own path, even though there is no circus or sports background in her family. Coming to a foreign country with a different culture and a language you don't understand isn't easy for sure. But she knows what she wants and she is willing to work for it. Check out her Instagram and her Youtube channel for her tutorials! IG: @xkimaliciax Youtube: xkimaliciax P.S.: Consider supporting us so we can keep producing content!
