Jennifer Collins, author, is a retired professor and physical therapist whose professionalcareer spanned forty years. She held many titles during those years, but “Mom” was theone that brought her the most joy; her close-knit family was the center of her universe. Her debut novel, Comfort in the Wings, emerged from Jennifer's devastatingexperiences with the loss of several immediate family members, including two of herthree children. Tragedy in her life brought an understanding that seemingly oppositefeelings - joy and profound sadness or gratitude and anger – can exist at the very samemoment. Striving to articulate those emotions compelled her to bring a seldom heardvoice into fiction. Supporting loved ones through chronic illness, substance use, mentalhealth struggles and sudden loss, Jennifer was struck by the toll that stigma andjudgement take on people who are grieving. Her books delve into meaningfulconversations about these issues without preaching or politicizing highly personalissues.Encouraged by readers' response, Jennifer wrote two more books, creating the LoveThat Does Not Die Trilogy. Jennifer enjoys writing about the quest for joy and gratitudeafter grief, especially celebrating signs in nature from lost loved ones or finding healingnear water. Most recently, the MartinArts Council recognized her as their 2023 LiteraryArts Award Winner. She also considers herself an advocate for compassion andkindness, and volunteers at a hospice home. When not writing, Jennifer feels blessed to run a family business alongside her eldest son. As she was navigating what it meant for her, she expanded her practice to specialize in neurodivergent couples and trauma therapy. This is an expanding and needed space. Brooke is on a mission to normalize it for others and herself after a lifetime of trying to keep it all together! Brooke is passionate about helping others unmask and understand their unique needs therapeutically as individuals and couples. She has come to realize that oftentimes, many of the traditional or "neurotypical" therapies and theories often just "don't work" for out of the box thinkers, empaths, and creatives. Sadly, due to many stigmas and stereotypes of the traditional way of treating mental health, there are just too many gaps in care and knowledge. Deeply honest and known to drop the occasional F-Bomb, Ellen is a leading example that there is not just one path to success in life and business. After attending culinary school in Mexico City, Ellen returned home to LA. To get professional experience, Ellen busted her way into some of the best kitchens in LA until she eventually became a line cook at a two-star Michelin restaurant. Around the same time, the concept for an apron business began bubbling in her head. It is this concept that ultimately led to the formation of Hedley & Bennett, the leading provider of aprons and kitchenware for top chefs everywhere.  Although Ellen has faced ups and downs along the way, her passion and purpose have inspired her to keep going down the path less traveled. Barbara has lived all her life in the Rochester area and has a lakehouse on Keuka Lake. She raised 3 daughters, one who was diagnosed with anorexia at age 11 in 1969. At age 88 Barbara has experienced the impact of alcoholism, mental health issues and anorexia/bulimia, starting when her youngest daughter was 5 years old, all during a time when NO ONE was talking about any of it. Barbara's youngest daughter was exhibiting behaviors that seemed very different from her other daughters; she consulted their doctor; this was the beginning of a lifetime of struggles. At this time, she also shared her concerns about her oldest daughter's loss of weight, change in mood and refusal to eat. The doctor told her to not delay, to take care of it right away. This was to be a journey that she knew nothing about, she and her husband were scared and felt very alone. Their daughter did recover; what is fascinating is, they consulted a psychiatrist who took the lead and supported this family; 30 years later this might not have been the case, fast forward to today; where psychiatry is beginning to become much more involved in treatment and diagnosis. A SUNY Albany School of Business graduate, she is no stranger to corporate stress and the physical ache that working and striving for the next big thing all the time can leave on a body. Kaitlyn began teaching in 2014, taking yoga teacher training as a healthy summer hobby. Soon after teaching, she recognized that people left class happy, and that their mood was uplifted, and she realized they had left life's stressors behind. Kaitlyn went on to study yoga therapy with Phoenix Rising to help people use the tools of yoga to enhance their whole life, rather than just an hour per day. Yoga is an ancient practice not just based on the postures we see in magazines, but on eight holistic limbs and Kaitlyn hopes to highlight this with the individuals, couples and groups she works with. Clients learn to improve their relationship with physical, mental, and emotional tensions that show up in their bodies. Kaitlyn began teaching for KMB for Answers in 2021 and has studied Yoga for Eating Disorders. She also teaches paddleboard yoga and writes for Rochester Woman Online. She loves spending her downtime with her dog. As a yoga therapist, Kaitlyn's goal is to help you discover long-term relief and a happier mind, body, and spirit. Matt offers electro-acoustic concerts and Multi-Media events, but is also known as a singer-songwriter and band-leader that has played on numerous national stages and high-profile events. Of all the twists and turns in Matt's life, nothing would have as profound an impact, as the death of his wife. Matt and Yolanda had spent 20 years together and Matt felt lost and disconnected from life. He escaped to nature with the Hang instruments, he visited the redwoods, the canyons, the ocean, the desert…anywhere that offered a peaceful environment where he could find strength in nature. In time his heart started to heal, but with a different level of maturity that felt more enduring. He began to develop musical motifs that came from these visits to nature's sanctuaries, and they later evolved into compositions. He wrote lyrics that reflected the delicate passage of life and the human need to turn to the heart for solace. He soon realized this wasn't simply his journey, but the journey of all humans in the rhythm of life. Jason was born in South Korea in 1970, only 18 years after the end of the Korean War. When Jason was 5 years old, his parents moved their family to the United States. Starting a new life with Jason and his two younger sisters in a foreign country and culture was a struggle for their whole family and Jason's father developed alcoholism.Throughout Jason's childhood, he experienced many of the challenges immigrants face when coming to the U.S., including racism, anger and separation. These experiences were both traumatic and deep seated. Everything was chaotic and unpredictable. During this time, Jason discovered that he could control one thing— his grades. Jason learned quickly that feeling in control and achieving was a way to get recognition and the praise of parents, teachers, and peers alike. He had no control over his environment, as his dad's alcoholism dictated that the family move every 2-4 years. Jason never felt at home anywhere. He developed anxiety and depression at an early age which was undiagnosed until he was twenty-three. Jason developed a dependence on alcohol, endured broken relationships that have been devastating, experienced the painful death of loved ones, and has survived a traumatic automobile accident. He has explored many methods of healing including physical, mental/psychological, and spiritual. He attributes his work in the Twelve Steps of AA, embracing spirituality—especially in Eckhart Tolle's teachings and the teachings of ACIM—A Course in Miracles—to his continuing recovery of body, mind, and spirit. Jason helps others by sharing his journey and by being a supportive friend to others who struggle. He currently lives on the East Coast of the US with his cats Jiji and Muta. Jackie Patmore's involvement in the eating disorders field spans multiple roles of researcher, educator, clinician and patient advocate. Before occupying these roles, however, it was her personal experience of developing anorexia as an elite volleyball player when she was 14 years old that ignited her desire to enter the field in the first place. As a patient, Jackie was subject to care that lacked an evidence base, was nearly impossible to access, and was void of cultural sensitivity. Early awareness of these and other gaps in treating and understanding eating disorders drove her to harness her own experience, education, and professional pursuits to improve conditions and treatment options for eating disorder sufferers. As a researcher at the Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine, Jackie was involved with studies that implemented evidence-based treatments for eating disorders in clinical settings. She assisted in the creation of online Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) interventions and assisted in projects providing Family Based Treatment for children with Anorexia and Binge Eating disorder. Additionally, Jackie helped to establish Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) as a primary treatment for eating disorders, depression and anxiety in university clinics nationwide.Jackie has worked in a variety of mental health treatment centers including private and hospital-based, outpatient and inpatient eating disorder clinics. Throughout her time in clinical practice, she has also been involved in advocacy efforts to increase insurance and federal coverage of eating disorder treatments in Missouri, Texas, and New York. Jackie has also lectured and taught course sections at Columbia University, Hunter College, and NYU. She enjoys teaching on the topics of eating disorders, evidence-based interventions, and dynamic forms of psychotherapy. Currently, Jackie is a PhD candidate at Columbia University's Clinical Psychology Program and manages the Somatic Expressions of Pain Lab, supervising master's students on research initiatives related to sexual abuse, trauma, substance use, self-injury, and eating disorders. Her lab has presented at international conferences and published studies related to lying and deception about issues of eating and body image in treatment, cultural considerations for the treatment of eating disorders, and the use of peer supports in the treatment of eating disorders. Our Hosts:Linda and John (Jack) Mazur wrote, Emilee: The Story of a Girl and Her Family Hijacked by Anorexia, to honor their daughter's wish, to raise awareness, evoke compassion, and foster change in how eating disorders are viewed and treated. Debra also authored the book, The Things I've Seen People Do With and Without Food which has recently been chosen to receive The Pinnacle Book Achievement Award, as one of the Best Books in Health category, winter 2022. Her decision to put together this book of collections was primarily based upon the fact that she believes most people who struggle with eating disorders are either silently struggling alone or misunderstood. Debra believes everyone who struggles with an eating disorder should find their inner voice and be heard. More importantly, she wants those suffering to know that they are not alone. Debra Spector,MS,RDN,CDNProfessional Facebook page:https://www.facebook.com/debraspectormsrdncdnWebsite:www.debraspector.comInstagram:@debraspectormsrdncdnBook: The Things I've Seen People Do With And Without Food https://www.amazon.com/dp/0578981807/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_imm_ADZA3X8Q844ZMJ2DH8NMLinks for Our Hosts:Linda and John (Jack) Mazur wrote, Emilee: The Story of a Girl and Her Family Hijacked by Anorexia, https://www.amazon.com/Emilee-Story-Family-Hijacked-Anorexia/dp/170092012X to honor their daughter's wish, to raise awareness, evoke compassion, and foster change in how eating disorders are viewed and treated. When Chef Irene Li opened a food truck, mei mei, with her siblings, hoping to have fun together, build something cool, and reimagine Chinese comfort cuisine with a playful, modern twist, what happened next took everyone by surprise. Mei Mei exploded, becoming the talk of the town within months. They soon found themselves looking for space and opening a full-service restaurant that was perpetually abuzz. The restaurant was a big success. But, beyond the chance to do something cool with her brother and sister, and push the culinary envelope, there was something else going on.Growing up, Irene's grandparents immigrated to the US and slowly built up their own restaurants. While her brother had been in fine dining for years, she'd developed a deep passion not just for food, but also for the environment, viewing agriculture, the food and restaurant industry as a potential vehicle to change people's lives, to completely upend the way restaurants run, and weave in a powerful thru line of social justice, advocacy and impact. And, of course, fun and love. As mei mei took off, Irene and the restaurant landed features everywhere from Food & Wine and The New York Times to People, Bon Appetit and more. Irene gained acclaim for her creativity and innovation, being named a Zagat 30 Under 30 and Forbes 30 Under 30 winner, six-time James Beard Foundation Rising Star Chef nominee, and James Beard Foundation Leadership Award winner. Her cookbook is Double Awesome Chinese Food: Irresistible and Totally Achievable Recipes from Our Chinese-American Kitchen.Like many restaurants, though, the pandemic was a brutal experience, the restaurant space eventually closed its doors, but mei mei - the creative, joyful food innovator brand - transformed itself into a next-generation direct-to-consumer and wholesale food manufacturer, focusing on their signature dumplings, with a heartbeat that remains deeply rooted in industry reform and social justice. Irene's commitment to food, agriculture, cooking and community is a testament to the dedication she has for her work and her genuine commitment to being in relationship with others to impact the greater good. #110 - Jane was born and raised in London, in what can only be described as a very ‘normal' household, with four siblings, and a mum and dad, who quite simply, adored each other, and still do! There was always a pet of some kind in their household. Nothing remarkable happened, certainly no great traumas, yet, at the age of 11, Jane developed a serious eating disorder. It wasn't until age 35, that Jane got a handle on recovery, thanks in no small part, to the best dog to ever walk the planet – a beautiful, soulful, rescue bulldog named Crystal. That special dog taught Jane the true meaning of unconditional love and gave her the courage to join life again. The endless cycle of hospital admissions stopped, and for the last 15 years Jane has worked in the field of mental health and substance misuse, campaigning for better services, developing projects to challenge stigma, and educate people about mental illness. Jane is passionate about a fairer welfare system for low-income families, and she is currently employed by a wonderful organization which helps people access financial and emotional support, as well as practical services. Jane's main ‘love' in life, outside of her work, is and always has been, animals. She spends every moment of her spare time with her crazy greyhound, Daisy.  Jane also enjoys reading, watching ‘rubbish' TV, and spending time with her family. Our HostsLinda and John (Jack) Mazur wrote the book, Emilee-The Story of a Girl and Her Family Hijacked by Anorexia, https://www.amazon.com/Emilee-Story-Family-Hijacked-Anorexia/dp/170092012X to honor their daughter's wish, to raise awareness, evoke compassion, and foster change in how eating disorders are viewed and treated.
