I ran my first, and so far only, ultra marathon in 2021 - the 44 mile Classic Quarter - to celebrate a landmark birthday which was a few weeks before the run. This podcast started as a way of me learning how to do that - hence why it's called Running 44@60. The adventure then turned into a book and as a business consultant it became both a business and running book and is available on Amazon via this link: 12 Business Lessons from Running an Ultra Marathon. On this episode of the Running 44@60 podcast I'm talking to Wez SwainIn 2023 Wez had an idea that became the Scilly60A 60km race that takes in the five inhabited islands of the Isles of Scilly75 places were available and 65 runners started with 24 finishing. If you missed the cut out you missed the boat to the next start line! The average pace needed to make the cut offs is 7.30 mins / km For 2024 Wes has doubled the number of places and added the Scilly60% 'fun run' which is a 40 km event taking in four of the islands - with an average pace needed of 8.30 mins / km These events take place on Friday, June 14th for the Scilly60% and Sunday, June 16th for the Scilly60Places have largely sold out but there may be the odd place that comes available so if you are interested the best thing to do is email Wes via hello@scilly60.co.ukThe Tide Race which will happen on 22nd August. It sounds like an amazing almost one-off opportunity because it's the only day of the year essentially where this could occur given you have to run from Tresco to Merrick Island and back in calf/knee deep water, then its a lap of Tresco before running across the sands to Bryher and back hence the need to run on the day when the tide is lowest. There is currently no limit on the number of competitors for what will be a half marathon in total distance. And then at the end of August Wes is putting on a series of Swim Run events as part of the first Ocean Scilly FestivalYou can find out all the details of all the fantastic events that Wes is putting on via the website https://scilly60.co.ukThis is episode 147 of the Running 44@60 podcast. The Scillies 60 is a new race for 2023. 60km spread over 6 legs on 5 of the islands of the Isles of Scilly - starting and finishing on Tresco and following the coast path to complete a lap of each island. So here how it works:The first leg is around 10km on Tresco and runners have 63 minutes in which to complete it. If you make the cut off you're on the boat to the next island. To ensure runners know that the timer is in synch with their own timings with 2 minutes to go the Claxon sounds. It then sounds again to indicate time's up. You have to cross the leg finishing line before the second claxon or you're out. Then's its over to Bryher (8km) followed by St Martins 9.5km), St Marys (18km) and St Agnes (8.5km) before returning for a shorter 6km run on Tresco to the finish. The female and male winner of each island leg received a special island winners shirt and the overall race leader gets to wear the race leader shirt. The cut off times in terms of pace are the same throughout - 12 minutes per mile or 7.5 minutes per km. That sounds fine if you're out running on the roads but this is largely on the ups and downs of the coastal path.As you will hear Tracy missed the cut off at the end of leg 4 by just 21 seconds. Stuart finished 8th overall in a total time of 6:18:13 - the winning time was 4:50:25There is a great video on the Scillies 60 website documenting the event. The race limit was 75 and 24 runners finished. This is episode 123 of the Running 44@60 podcast. Mike Nelhams has recently retired as Head Gardener of the beautiful gardens on Tresco but remains very active and involved in island life. He meets Clare off the boat from St Marys and takes her on a tour of the island explaining the appeal of life on one of the most beautiful islands in Britain. They walk through the gardens observing the red squirrels which were introduced ten years ago on the request of Prince Charles who owns the island leasing it to the Dorrien-Smith family. They are responsible for the upkeep of the gardens as well as managing life on the island where there's a thriving tourist industry that sees visitors returning year after year. Tresco has its own micro-climate and is on the Gulf Stream that makes ideal growing conditions for exotic plants from South Africa and New Zealand. Producer: Maggie Ayre

Without quite walking on water, Helen Mark uses a very low spring tide to walk between Tresco and Bryher, two of the Isles of Scilly. She meets people who delight in what is revealed on the seabed, such as 3,000 year old Neolithic field walls, indicating the time when the islands were a single landmass. Local harbour master Henry Birch stands with Helen at the mid point between the islands which normally sits 5 meters below the sea. Helen hears how it's all possible because of what must surely be one the best words to have up your sleeve during a game of Scrabble: syzgy, which is when the sun, moon and earth are aligned creating the extreme highs and lows known as spring tides. Producer: Mark Smalley.
After the peace and quiet of a stay on Tresco, boarding a noisy helicopter can be a bit of a shock. But it is always very exciting. Hold on to your hat!
The golden sun is rising over the Eastern Isles. A new day on Tresco has begun. The first person on the beach, you listen to the pair of Oyster Catchers on Rushy Porth.
During a walk around the island, the tide is coming in and you have to clamber over the granite rocks to get passed the headland at Blockhouse Point. Spend a few minutes enjoying the sound of the waves sloshing against the rocks.
A visit to Tresco is not complete without watching a helicopter land. Listen to the British International Sikorski S61 arrive here. After departure, peace returns and the tractors and bicycles rule the island once more.
It's not always perfect weather on Tresco. Some days it rains and rains. But if I had to be stuck anywhere in the rain, it would be on Tresco.
It's time for a short stroll. You're going for a short walk along the soft white sands of the beach.
You're sat on the white sandy beach of Pentle Bay. All is well with the world. Then a familiar visitor arrives...
Welcome back! This is the second Tresco360.co.uk podcast and this month we'll be heading up towards the north of the island. It's a sunny, but breezy day and we've walked up to a rocky outcrop besides Gimble Porth beach on Tresco, Isles of Scilly. The sea gulls usually hang around here and have had to take flight as we've approached. You can here them circling overhead. Looking out, you can watch the waves crashing against the rocks below. Enjoy!
Welcome to the first Tresco360.co.uk podcast! We'll set off by spending a quiet afternoon on Green Porth beach near Old Grimsby on Tresco, Isles of Scilly. It's a sunny, warm day and you're the only person on the beach. Exciting events this afternoon include a boat passing causing some waves and a few sea gulls flying nearby. Enjoy!
