In my time cruising around Substack, one of the more interesting personalities I've come across is a fellow named Wez, aka Obsidian Blackbird. who writes “Memories of a Post Grunge Drifter”, a sort of ongoing autobiographical project that winds its way across the end of Generation X and the turn of the new millennium through the eyes of a vagabond Kiwi. Along the way, Wez shows us how the adversity of his family situation was dealt with, or not, via running away from home and leading a life not unlike that lived by another friend and former guest of this show, A.M. Hickman. A journey that spans the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean while straddling cultural shifts of rural living in the British Empire's furthest flung outpost to the streets of early 2000s Sydney and Toronto, and onward into the weirdness of post Covid America, Wez's life has been lived with both hands firmly gripping the short and curlies. Based on the Isles of Scilly, 28 miles of the south west coast of Cornwall Wez, already an accomplished 'swim run' competitor took the bull by the horns and created the Scilly 60 Events company to showcase the beautiful running environment these isles provide.We chat about his experiences of the Arc of Attrition and his solo swim out into the Atlantic to reach a remote lighthouse. His enthusiasm is infectious and it's absolutely no surprise that his events have become incredibly popular and a much loved part of the running community calendar. Whether Max is played by Mel Gibson or Tom Hardy, so much is expressed via facial expressions and the chaos happening all around him. Paired with some memorable villains, and you get cinematic gold. Speaking of villains, what a list of names: Toecutter. Night Rider. Lord Humongous. Wez. Aunty Entity. Ironbar. And of course, Immortan Joe. They just keep getting more and more over the top as the franchise progressed.And what's truly remarkable is the fact that Max is actually the deuteragonist of Mad Max: Fury Road. That's right, he's the second most important character - the protagonist is one Imperator Furiosa, originally played to perfection by Charlize Theron, and soon to be embodied by Anya Taylor-Joy in the upcoming Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. I don't know about you, but I am pretty stoked to see another installment in the franchise - Max or no Max!

Clarke has mixed countless hit records over his career. He has served in regimental duty at all ranks, including time in the reconnaissance platoon. He was the Regimental Sergeant Major of the Support Weapons School as it became the Combined Arms Manoeuvre School. He has instructed at AFC Harrogate, ITC Catterick, and on loan service to Brunei's Officer Academy.
