In June 2021 Trevor Lee will run his first ultra marathon the Cornwall Classic Quarter which starts at the UK’s most southerly point (Lizard Village) and heads via 44 miles of the South West Coast Path to the most Westerly point (Lands End). The podcast is a motivational tool for Trevor and includes…
If you're wondering why this episode is called thank you and good night it is because it is the final episode.I've had an absolute fantastic time. I've met some incredible people hosting this podcast since it first started in August 2019 not just as guests but as listeners and also at all the runs I've taken part in. It was only meant to help me complete the Classic Quarter which I did in May 2021 so it should've finished over 3 1/2 years ago .But here we are at episode number 173 and of course it was almost by sheer chance that this whole journey started.Back in February 2019 I was invited to speak at a business conference. The headline speaker was a guy called Jim Lawless who talked about a concept he had created called TamingTigers which essentially was about setting yourself challenges way beyond your comfort zone.Whilst listening to Jim, I was conscious that I was just over two years away from a landmark birthday for which I had been thinking about running a third career marathon, the previous two being in 2005 and 2010. Listening to Jim I realised that wasn't a Taming Tigers enough challenge. For some reason the name Classic Quarter popped up into my head and I looked it up over lunchtime to discover that it was a coastal path run from Lizard Point, which is relatively close to where I was living when my children were growing up, to Lands End. Undoubtedly the Taming Tigers bit was discovering it was 44 miles!I started calling the challenge 44 at 60 and as I already had a business podcast I decided that the best way to learn how to take on this challenge was to start a podcast so I could record all the great advice I knew I would be given. The first episode which was basically an introduction episode went live in August 2019, with episode two being my first ever coastal path race - the White Rat. My first guest was the fabulous Andy Goundry who told me ultrarunning was an eating competition not a running competition and to make sure that I walked up all the hills in the race, but to run up all of them in training and keep smiling! Without doubt this podcast was a massive factor in achieving my goal of finishing the Classic Quarter and along the way raising over £7000 for the children's hospice Southwest and postrace writing the book 12 business lessons from running an ultra marathon. So many fantastic guests, so many great running adventures and so many great running community friends. I feel very privileged to have been able to do this. Thank you everyone - it's been a blast! So here we are recording on Monday January 27th - 2 days after the Arc 50 So what happened to our group - Richard, Anya, Himani, Tom, Nicky and Matt? Each has a story to tellSome made itSome didn'tWhat would they all do differently? And what are they doing next? It has been fantastic being part of this group - behind the scenes the What's app group the 7 of us are part of has been virtually every day for the past 2.5 months full of encouragement, support, advice and help. And most of us met in person for the first time at either Friday registration or at 5am on the Saturday in the barn at HQ waiting for the coaches to the Minack You can access and download the previous 171 episodes of this show via your usual podcast app or on the Running 44@60 podcast page. Just 3 days to go to the Arc of Attrition 50 - I've been planning all the sections - estimating times for each one, making notes of landmarks to take with me, getting all the kit ready for registration check on Friday. And with no running for four weeks I've been eating, sleeping, watching Arc of Attrition You Tube videos and listening to previous episodes of this podcast which featured the Arc 50.My plan is to be on the start line and see how we go from there.I want to have a grand day out and I'll be recording for this podcast as part of that.Looking at my timing estimates ensuring I get to St Ives in time to change shoes etc and leave by 5.15pm could be very tight. Good luck to all of you taking part. Run with a smile on your face and enjoy your day! Send us a textTo celebrate a landmark birthday in 2024 Rachel Thomson tackled a series of running events throughout the year whilst raising money for St Petrocs, the Cornwall Homeless Charity. The website provides information on how you can donate - including all those running hoodies you never wear.So how did all go?We catch up on the four events that became five when Rachel added the November Cornish Marathon to her challenges. Rachel's fundraising finishes at the start of 2025 so you still have time to support her via her Local Giving page. The five challenges Rachel undertook: April 21st - London Marathon - Rachel wore a bright yellow St Petrocs top and had a fabulous day out. June 14th - Scilly 60% - 38 km over four of the Isles of Scilly: St Martins, Tresco, Bryher, St Agnes - if you miss the cut off on any stage you literally miss the boat to the next stage. Did Rachel make the cut offs? Aug 2nd 7pm start - The BOYD (Bring Out Your Dead) - 24 hours of running a 5 mile loop which includes 500 steps. If you stop at any point for more than 10 minutes you're out! Rachel tells how a rogue piece of wood with nails didn't help. Sept 14th - The Woods - 12 hours of a 4 mile loop in Tehidy Woods. One of Rachel's favourites. Send us a textI made a big thing about saying that I would never run the Cornish Marathon and there I was on November 3rd 2024 on the start line.So yes I did run the Cornish Marathon, or rather I 'Jeffed' the Cornish Marathon so four minutes running one minute walking using the same strategy I used at the Brighton Marathon earlier in the year. Was a great day and I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed it. Lots of fantastic people and some amazing views from the middle of nowhere.Loads of great volunteers out on the course - just a tremendous day. I'm so glad that I did do it.This is an on the run recording picking up snippets as I go which I hope you'll enjoy and I hope will give you a flavour for the Cornish Marathon if you decide to do it in 2025.If you do think about that here's the link to the East Cornwall Harriers website page featuring the Cornish Marathon. You can access and download the previous 158 episodes of this show via your usual podcast app or on the Running 44@60 podcast page. Send us a textI met Brendan Fletcher when we were both earlier this year on the England Athletics Coach in Running Fitness course. Brendan is a fully qualified tour guide and has run several ultra marathons most of which I've never heard of including:TestWay UltraDragon Coastal Ultra 100Run with No Witty NameClarendon MarathonWe also talk about Brendan's new running tour around Stonehenge based on his amazing local knowledge of the area – he lives just 1 mile from Stonehenge in combination with his sheer enthusiasm for running and his seven year experience as a tour guide. For the Stonehenge Running Tour Brendan specialises in working with groups of four people, who book with him as a group and then he will take them on a run anywhere between five and 13 miles at all times of the year. Brendan even offers as part of the service to pick people up to come on the tour from anywhere as far away from Stonehenge as Bristol in one direction and London in another direction.Brendan is a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable tour guide and I'm convinced that anyone going on one of his tours will have a great time and learn absolutely tons. Be ready though with your phone camera because you are going to go places that only Brendan will be able to take you.Brendan also tries to, regardless of the time of year, start each run around sunrise so you get the best views of the Stonehenge area.Brendan's non-running tours can be found at Chalkland Tours LtdYou can access and download the previous 157 episodes of this show via your usual podcast app or on the Running 44@60 podcast page. Send us a textOne of the things I'm always trying to do on this podcast is have people on it who have completed running challenges that we've not covered before and indeed many of the listeners might not have heard of.I first met Martin Elcoate at the Cornwall Running Show in 2023 when he was one of the volunteers on The Green Runners stand. And then earlier this year Martin appeared in a whole page article in Runners World featuring the amazing challenge he had undertaken starting at the beginning of 2024 involving a bespoke Ordinance Survey map and the 400 km² that surrounded where he lived.Essentially Martin's plan was to run through every one of the 400 squares all of which are 1km x 1km. Martin's dairy can be found on Instagram @martinelcoateMartin shares details of the challenge and also gives us an update on what's happening with The Green Runners including a crowdfunding campaign they have launched to enable them to employ a couple of people to help them massively expand their work. I didn't record on the way around with the exception of a few snippets on my phone on my last lap which I share at the end of a few minutes of introducing the event and mentioning a few people who I met on the day.A couple of events I mentioned on the episode that depending on when you read these notes you might still be able to enter:Run MawnanTywarnhayle 10k To celebrate reaching the 5 year marker of the podcast I'm giving away a few copies of 12 Business Lessons from Running an Ultra Marathon. So I've handed over this episode to six newly qualified coaches who were on the same course as me to share with you their top tips to help you with your running. You're going to hear from Drew, Lorna, Tom, Ryan, Anita and BrendanA big thanks to them for their contribution not just to this episode but to helping you with your running and being great colleagues on the course. I thought it was ok but I almost certainly didn't drink enough water Training - did I do enough and of the right sort? Definitely not. I just didn't do the mileage and I did no training on the course. Lessons learnt? - Plenty. Will I still do the Arc 50? - As I was nearing Gorran Haven it was a definitely not but now maybe it's a possibility. Shane describes his work as helping runners run more effortlessly, more efficiently and more enjoyably. As runners Shane suggests we need to think more about our form and our movement. One of his top tips for club runners is to focus on their head position as the natural thing for runners to do is to look down rather than keeping their head up with their eyeline looking ahead. For the likes of me and my new coaching friends he suggests we apply the mind of the beginner so every time we do something we learn something. You can find out more about Shane at RunReBorn Shane's book is 'The Lost Art of Running' This is episode 151 of the Running 44@60 podcast. On this episode of the Running 44@60 podcast I'm talking to Wez SwainIn 2023 Wez had an idea that became the Scilly60A 60km race that takes in the five inhabited islands of the Isles of Scilly75 places were available and 65 runners started with 24 finishing. If you missed the cut out you missed the boat to the next start line! The average pace needed to make the cut offs is 7.30 mins / km For 2024 Wes has doubled the number of places and added the Scilly60% 'fun run' which is a 40 km event taking in four of the islands - with an average pace needed of 8.30 mins / km These events take place on Friday, June 14th for the Scilly60% and Sunday, June 16th for the Scilly60Places have largely sold out but there may be the odd place that comes available so if you are interested the best thing to do is email Wes via hello@scilly60.co.ukThe Tide Race which will happen on 22nd August. It sounds like an amazing almost one-off opportunity because it's the only day of the year essentially where this could occur given you have to run from Tresco to Merrick Island and back in calf/knee deep water, then its a lap of Tresco before running across the sands to Bryher and back hence the need to run on the day when the tide is lowest. There is currently no limit on the number of competitors for what will be a half marathon in total distance. And then at the end of August Wes is putting on a series of Swim Run events as part of the first Ocean Scilly FestivalYou can find out all the details of all the fantastic events that Wes is putting on via the website https://scilly60.co.ukThis is episode 147 of the Running 44@60 podcast. On this episode of the Running 44@60 podcast I'm talking to Fergy - who is now the Event Director of Arc of Attrition by UTMB - about the Arc of Attrition, how it started and how it's going to look as part of the UTMB World Series. There has been a tremendous amount of chatter on social media since the announcement that UTMB is taking over the ARC and Ferg explains some of the differences but also reassures those who don't like change that much of what runners have become used to over the last few years will continue, including the involvement of the Arc Angels.Whilst we cover off some of the changes we don't get bogged down in the detail because all the various rules and regulations are available on the website: https://arcofattrition.utmb.worldFundamentally some of the changes include no deferrals, no waiting list and no support crew for the 50 raceBut there will be more aid stations, there will be potentially staggered starts with two waves for each race and there is a new 25 event starting in St IvesIt is amazing to think that here in Cornwall we will be hosting one of Europe's most iconic winter trail running events and with the addition of the new 25 mile event there will be more runners taking part than ever before, certainly more than the 53 hardy souls who shared the dream back in 2015 when they took part in the first ARC 100.If you are planning or have done something interesting in the ultra or marathon running world, ideally that we haven't covered in previous episodes, and would like to be a guest on the show please drop me a line to podcast@trevorleemedia.co.ukThis is episode 146 of the Running 44@60 podcast. On this episode of the Running 44@60 podcast I'm talking to Mark Roby about how he went from struggling to walk because of a back injury to a sub 3 hour marathon in less than 3 years. Mark ran his first London Marathon when he was 23 years old back in 1999 in a time of 4:18He didn't really run then until he discovered parkrun in 2017 but his running was scuppered in 2021 with a significant back problem which he gradually recovered from and in 2022 he joined a running club for the first time and did his first race in July that year. That was the start of a journey that less than two years later took him across the line at Brighton in 2:55:51, a time which in 2021 would have felt completely impossible. So how did he make such a massive improvement at the age of 48?Mark shares in the podcast episode the way he changed his diet, the way he stuck to a training plan which included regular course sessions some built around yoga and how he used parkrun to measure his speedwork progress. He also talks how we did a lot of easy 45 to 60 minute runs, essentially because they were not too difficult to fit into his daily working schedule.Mark also talks about Man Down Cornwall and how they helped him when he wasn't able to run. Mark offers two tips two be would be Marathon runners: Commit properly to a plan and avoid the temptation to skip some sessionsWork at different paces during your training If you are planning or have done something interesting, ideally that we haven't covered in previous episodes, and would like to be a guest on the show please drop me a line to podcast@trevorleemedia.co.ukThis is episode 145 of the Running 44@60 podcast. For this episode of the Running 44@60 podcast host Trevor Lee recorded on the run at the 2024 Brighton Marathon on Sunday April 7thTrevor used the same Jeff Galloway method that he used in the 2023 Brighton half marathon when he was several minutes under his predicted timeThe method is to run four minutes then walk for one minute throughout the whole of the event, even though in those first few walks you get overtaken by seemingly hundreds of runners!Trevor's target was to be under five hours, with a secondary target of being under 4:50 and a top target of sub 4:45As you will hear the Jeffing method worked really well and Trevor came home in 4:42The podcast episode will give you a real flavour for the fantastic atmosphere created by the thousands of spectators who lined the courseThe noise was absolutely immense in places and you will also hear that there was several groups of musicians and singers out on the courseThis will take some beating for being Trevor's number one run of 2024 when he looks back on the year in DecemberHere is the link to the results: Brighton Marathon Results 2024 And here is the link to the Brighton Marathon page if by listening to this you are persuaded to go for it in 2025 - its on Sunday April 6thI mentioned Rob Deering who we saw at the Komedia Comedy Club in Brighton - Rob co-hosts a great running podcast - Running Commentary - with fellow comedian Paul Tonkinson. In this episode of the Running 44@60 podcast I'm talking to Pete Sowerby about his amazing 100 mile debut run in the famous Arc of Attrition. He finished in 23:42 thus taking home the coveted Black Buckle and winning his age category, not that the Arc has age categories, by over four hours.Indeed his time would have won him the whole event in 2018.So during the episode we talk how he started running when he was around 40 and his journey through the local runs to sub 3hr marathons, marathon running for England, and onto the Classic Quarter, Snowdonia 50k, the Arc 50 and then the Arc 100.And during that buildup time how with the help of the experts at The Run Lab he changed his running technique and as a result not only got faster but found that his injury rate reduced significantly.Pete shares details of his Arc training plans including 25 mile back to backs, his nutrition plan and ultimately how it went on the day including one or two low moments the first of which arrived at only 12 miles. At the conclusion of the episode I ask Pete for two top tips for would-be long-distance runners and they are:Firstly try out your nutrition plan during your training, get used to eating proper food during training and find out what works for youSecondly go out there and enjoy the eventAfter we finished recording he also add practicing hill walking because in the event you are going to be walking up and indeed down some of the hills so you need to practice that. This is episode 138 of the Running 44@60 podcast. Toby's top tips are to do its of strength work as part of your training, including running in a fully laden pack and during the event don't follow others (they may not be going in the right direction) instead focus on your own navigation skills. OMM is teams of two with certain time allowances between starting and arriving at the overnight campsite.Find out more about the 2024 OM here: https://theomm.com/original-mountain-marathon/events/Toby also talks about the fell running series on Dartmoor, encouraging listeners to take part in some of the 12 race series which in 2024 starts on April 20th.Find out more via the South West Fell Runners website: https://swfellrunners.ukToby's running plans for 2024 include the The FellsMan 100 https://fellsman.org.ukDon't forget The Cornwall Running Show 2024 will be held on Sunday January 14th at the Heartlands event centre – I will be there encouraging visitors to the show to come and do a two minute recording with me about their running plans for 2024This is episode 135 of the Running 44@60 podcast. In this episode of the Running 44@60 podcast I'm sharing my favourite 6 races of 2023I mention separately the three favourite park runs I did which were Babbs Mill on the morning of the national running show and it was also the coldest ever Park run I've ever taken part in, Trelissick on June 10th when I celebrated my 100th park run at that venue by donning complete cricket gear and my favourite was the Hove Promenade the day before the Brighton half which my son and I took part in and we decided that we will have a gentle run out on the park run which then got super competitive and in the end he beat me by nine seconds but it was still my fastest of the year.So the top six are:In sixth place Cousin Jack – an 18 mile race on the toughest bit of the Cornish coastal pathIn fifth place the KVK soloIn fourth place the Brighton Half where I ran sub two hours using the Jeff Galloway walk run methodIn third place Hope 24 – my first venture into a festival running eventIn second place Exe to Axe - 22 pretty brutal miles and it was on my birthday! And this year's winner is St Piran's Revenge – the toughest yet most spectacular five and a bit miles race I've ever done and I love the way it was done in a minimalist wayDon't forget The Cornwall Running Show 2024 will be held on Sunday January 14th at the Heartlands event centre – I will be there encouraging visitors to the show to come and do a two minute recording with me about their running plans for 2024This is episode 133 of the Running 44@60 podcast. In this episode of the Running 44@60 podcast I'm sharing my experience of running the first ever Lighthouse Marathon.Pendeen to Godrevy on the North Cornwall Coast with a bit on at the start and finish to make it the full marathon distance. For me it was an ARC 50 test. With 3 months to go where am I fitness wise was the key question to be answered.Sadly a recent achilles injury I had recovered from re-occured when I slipped / stumbled at 7 miles.I hobbled on to the 14 mile aid station at St Ives where I had already decided enough was enough. My first ever DNF (Did Not Finish)It also means my Arc adventure for January 2024 is over. I've deferred to January 2025. I mention the Ford Sen Mighal - its a great Bys Vyken event on December 2nd - North Cornwall Coast (Lelant) to South Cornwall Coast (Marazion) This is episode 130 of the Running 44@60 podcast. In this episode of the Running 44@60 podcast I'm talking to King Alfred's Way top 5 finisher Jim Spencer. Jim successfully completed this one time event in mid-August 2023. We recorded the episode whilst setting up the Trelissick Parkrun on Saturday October 14th. King Alfred Way's went through 4 counties and the event, organised by Cockbain Events was billed as being 220 miles with 85 hours to complete it in. As you will hear Jim took the odd wrong turn and ended up doing 234 miles but well within the cut off time. Unbelievably one of his fastest miles was towards the event when he was looking to gain 5th place. It was inspiring just talking to Jim about his adventure, how he managed nutrition and some sleep and the role his crew Katie and Roly played. This is episode 130 of the Running 44@60 podcast. In this episode of the Running 44@60 podcast I'm talking to first time IronMan Tim Hill who successfully completed the Copenhagen Ironman in August 2023. Tim worked for the LTA for many years as a high performance coach and spent seven years as a Tennis Coach in Australia which is where the idea for an Ironman first emerged. We talk about Tim's planning, how he hired an Ironman coach, his balance of training for the three disciplines And then how it went on the dayCopenhagen seems to be a top choice for first time IronMan competitors as the swim is in a lagoon on the sea front, the biking is 2 loops and the running 4 loops so you can constantly enjoy the supporting encouragement of the crowds. Tim top tips are to commit to the challenge and get help in the form of a coach. Tim's coach spent 30 minutes a week with him on the phone and every Sunday evening sent Tim a training schedule for the week ahead. This is episode 129 of the Running 44@60 podcast. In this episode of the Running 44@60 podcast we hear about two of the UK's most epic ultra running challenges – the Lakeland 100 and the Bob Graham Round.Stuart Musson undertook the Bob Graham Round challenge in June 2023. You have 24 hours in which to complete the 42 peaks, 66 miles and 27,000 feet of ascent and you have to have someone witness you achieving every single peak so a massive logistical piece of pre-run planning to make sure everything is in place. Stuart completed the task in 21 hours 49 minutes. The Lakeland 100 is without doubt one of the most iconic hundred mile races in the UK. Colin Bathe had never run in the mountains before he set off in this year's Lakeland 100. in the podcast Colin will talk about how he overcame about a third of the way in a feeling of wanting to give up, particularly after one of his poles broke. Colin set himself a goal of 34 hours and he came in in 33:53.Stuart's top tip for any would-be ultra runners is that the mental side of ultra running sometimes outweighs the physical side in terms of the effect it can have on your endeavours, so be prepared for those moments where you feel you just can't go on, they will pass.Colin's top tips are to treat ultra running as an eating competition and to start slowly and then go slower.I mention the Truro Half Marathon - to enter click here This is episode 128 of the Running 44@60 podcast. Imagine taking part in a run that's called ‘Bring out your Dead' or BOYD for short that starts with a rather macabre leading of the runners to the start line by a guy dressed in a plague type mask and with a drummer beating the death march and has a field of only 10 runners. And then just to spice things up this race takes place over an out and back distance of 4.3 miles which includes some horrendous up and down steps and in 2023 just to round things off took place during a particularly gruesome August storm.Oh and by the way did I mention that during the whole event you can only stop for a maximum 10 minutes at any one point in time, you are not allowed any sort of outside help whatsoever and your sanctuary area where you go at the end of each lap to maybe have something to eat or drink or change of clothes is open to the elements.Yes by now you are thinking you've got a bit crazy to do this event. No actually a lot crazy.Or very very focused and determined. And that is how I would describe my running friend Andy Brown who completed this years BOYD which you are going to hear about on this episode. This is episode 127 of the Running 44@60 podcast. Hope 24 Running FestivalThe Hope 24 Running Festival took place near Plymouth on the weekend of July 8th-10th.The Hope 24 Running Festival consists of a choice of 12, 24 or 36 hour timed runs during which you complete as many or as few circuits of a 5 mile off-road course as you wish. There are also various relays from a team of two right through to a team of eight. This was my first ever venture into a 24-hour running event and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it.A big thanks to the organisers GB Ultras and to the local Mountain Search and Rescue team who manned the only aid station on the course at the 2 mile point.I stuck to my plan and completed eight laps and 40 milesI did four laps between 12 noon on the Saturday and around 5:45 PM with a 20 minute or so break between each lap to go back to the tent and eat proper food and drink green teaI then had a break until I started lap five at around 9:15 PM with a further break and then a final lap that day starting around 10:40 PMThen up for a starting time of 5:15 AM and 7 AM for my last lapI was very tempted to continue on two more laps to get to 50 miles but that wasn't part of the plan so I didn't do itNext year's event is scheduled for the same weekendThis is episode 126 of the Running 44@60 podcast. The Scillies 60 is a new race for 2023. 60km spread over 6 legs on 5 of the islands of the Isles of Scilly - starting and finishing on Tresco and following the coast path to complete a lap of each island. So here how it works:The first leg is around 10km on Tresco and runners have 63 minutes in which to complete it. If you make the cut off you're on the boat to the next island. To ensure runners know that the timer is in synch with their own timings with 2 minutes to go the Claxon sounds. It then sounds again to indicate time's up. You have to cross the leg finishing line before the second claxon or you're out. Then's its over to Bryher (8km) followed by St Martins 9.5km), St Marys (18km) and St Agnes (8.5km) before returning for a shorter 6km run on Tresco to the finish. The female and male winner of each island leg received a special island winners shirt and the overall race leader gets to wear the race leader shirt. The cut off times in terms of pace are the same throughout - 12 minutes per mile or 7.5 minutes per km. That sounds fine if you're out running on the roads but this is largely on the ups and downs of the coastal path.As you will hear Tracy missed the cut off at the end of leg 4 by just 21 seconds. Stuart finished 8th overall in a total time of 6:18:13 - the winning time was 4:50:25There is a great video on the Scillies 60 website documenting the event. The race limit was 75 and 24 runners finished. This is episode 123 of the Running 44@60 podcast.
