#90 Wez SwainWhat an absolute pleasure this was to chat with race director and proud Scillonian Wez Swain. Based on the Isles of Scilly, 28 miles of the south west coast of Cornwall Wez, already an accomplished 'swim run' competitor took the bull by the horns and created the Scilly 60 Events company to showcase the beautiful running environment these isles provide. We chat about his experiences of the Arc of Attrition and his solo swim out into the Atlantic to reach a remote lighthouse. His enthusiasm is infectious and it's absolutely no surprise that his events have become incredibly popular and a much loved part of the running community calendar. His pride and appreciation for his home on this spectacular group of isles shines through too. I get a little tongue tied at the beginning of this episode and I must admit I was a little nervous for some reason before our chat, but Wez has that calming effect that all good race directors have and after a stutter and a laugh we were back on track for a really enjoyable chat. I hope you enjoy it too. Donald Trump's new tariff regime, imposing at least a 10% tariff on all imports to the US, has caused chaos in international markets, and farmers across the world are wondering how they'll be affected. Here the National Farmers Union says it's working “at pace” with government on how to react if there is market disruption. The University of Reading has a worldwide reputation for expertise in agriculture and food research. So there was some surprise when it was revealed the University was planning to sell off one of its farms for housing. As part of our week looking at island farming, we're heading west off the coast of Cornwall, to the Isles of Scilly. Farmers are too afraid to use a government system that was set-up to improve their relationship with the supermarkets, according to a new investigation by BBC One's Countryfile. All week we've been looking at the egg industry. Yesterday we heard about pullets, the young female chicks that grow into laying hens. But for every egg that hatches a female chick, there's another that hatches male, and cockerels can't lay eggs, which obviously renders them useless for egg producers. In the UK these chicks are gassed at one day old, but in Europe techniques are being used to sex the chicks before they're hatched, whilst still in the egg.St Agnes is the most southerly of the Isles of Scilly. It's home to the Hicks family and their very small herd of dairy cows. The herd provides milk for the island's residents, around 80 people, and summer ice cream for the tourists. For this Sunday's edition of our sister programme On Your Farm Sarah Swadling went to meet them.Presented by Anna Jones and produced by Beatrice Fenton.

Poultry keepers say they can't access government websites to register their birds. From 1st October anyone who keeps birds has to register with the Animal and Plant Health Agency, to help with monitoring bird flu outbreaks, even those with just one or two chickens. Failure to comply could mean a fine of £2,500. However bird owners who've tried to register say the system is not working. Defra says it's had a high number of applications and is working at pace to process them. It says it will be improving its technology to make it more effective for people to register.Fishermen in the South West of England say they are "beyond frustrated" by proposals to expand offshore wind farm sites off the coast of Devon and Cornwall. The Crown Estate's latest plan includes thousands of square miles off Land's End and the Isles of Scilly, currently prime fishing grounds, and an expanded zone off north Devon. Fishermen claim they - and other EU boats - will be squeezed into ever more pressurised fishing grounds. Meanwhile, those in favour of an expansion of offshore wind are wondering why it's taking so long to get anything off the ground. All week we've been talking about deer, just like cattle, wild deer are susceptible to tuberculosis, and there's concern that they could transmit the disease to other wild deer, and cattle. In the Oxfordshire Cotswolds, a group of farmers, land owners, vets and deer-stalkers are one year into a project, looking into this. They're monitoring the prevalence of TB in wild deer through drone surveys and blood tests, and giving hands-on training on how to spot TB in deer carcasses.Presenter = Anna Hill Producer = Rebecca Rooney

A 335-year-long ‘war' (in which not a single shot was fired) officially ended on 17th April, 1986, when the UK's Dutch ambassador landed on the Isles of Scilly and declared an end to hostilities between the Netherlands and this tiny archipelago off the coast of Cornwall.  The origins of this eccentric conflict date back to 1651, during the English Civil War, where the Dutch found themselves indirectly involved due to their support for the parliamentarians. Angered by Dutch assistance to their enemies, the Royalists (based in Scilly) began robbing Dutch shipping lanes in the English Channel, prompting a declaration of war from the Dutch side... In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how local historian Roy Duncan's curiosity led him to investigate a long-standing rumour of his homeland's "war" with the Dutch - and unearth one of the craziest conflicts on record! Is it even possible to imagine what Britain would have been without seafaring? Braving the waters beyond our harbours can be traced back eight and a half thousand years - the earliest boats made crossings as soon as Britain broke away from the continent. You can trace the ages of Britain through the vessels that have been launched to and from her shores - Roman warships, Viking longships, William the Conqueror's flagship Mora and many more besides. In this episode recorded at the 2022 Chalke Valley history festival, conservationist and author of 'The Ship Asunder', Tom Nancollas joins Dan to talk about Britain's seafaring history through three aspects of three vessels: the mast of the steamship SS Great Eastern designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the hull of the Rosebud- a Cornwall-based fishing boat at the centre of the 1930s Newlyn villagers protest to save their condemned properties, and the figurehead of the Rosa Tacchini wrecked on the Isles of Scilly.Produced by Mariana Des Forges and edited by Dougal Patmore. If you want to get in touch with the podcast, you can email us at ds.hh@historyhit.com, we'd love to hear from you!If you'd like to learn more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad-free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hit - subscribe to History Hit today!Download the History Hit app from the Google Play store.Download the History Hit app from the Apple Store. Nicky Button was born in Gloucester and grew up in Worcester. Having a very happy childhood. Nicky was always last to be picked for any teams at school and was the most uncoordinated and non sporty child being told to go and swim after a term of tennis when she still hadn't hit a ball. Her teens and twenties removed around horses and children , whilst she ran a yard starting and schooling young horses and teaching people to ride alongside being a foster mother.  In 2000 with an eight year old daughter she moved to Surrey where she spotted a group of people kayaking on a local canal, she went along to the club and heard only two parts of the sentence, Wednesday nights are adults only, whitewater training and we go to the pub afterwards. Six months later she was staring at her first White water river in Wales. Several swims later and at the end of the river she was hooked.  The kayaking totally changed her life and she soon realised that whilst she certainly wasn't the most proficient, she had found her tribe. Through the kayaking she was invited to help on set on Midsummer Murders and the rest as they say is history, she retrained learning swift water and rope rescue, working at heights and confined spaces, with fire and setting up stunts and rigging. There then followed some incredible years where she felt that she was being paid to have the best time in life.  In 2013 after going away skiing she returned and was unable to see her daughter across the room. Four months later she'd had her driving license removed which knocked onto no job and then no home. Her life felt as though it was falling apart.  She moved to South Devon and stormed along the South West Coast path. A few years on and she was part of walking groups for people with Visual Impairment and encouraging people to get out walking.  On moving to Worcester in 2021 she met an amazing group of strangers who became friends, a trip up Ben Nevis was followed by entering her first Ultra challenge a 50km over Exmoor. When she completed that she looked for her next challenge.  During lockdown she'd dreamed she'd walked from Scotland to Devon, she decided to make this a reality and so Nicky's most marvellous ridiculous adventure was born. We visit the Isles of Scilly for early narcissi and the Mendip Hills for a rainstorm recorded by Alice Boyd. Zoe Gilbert tells tales of snowdrops and to close, Gwilym Bowen Rhys sings 'Ambell i gân', a song to guard against heartbreak and bad weather. 'As the Season Turns' is a podcast created by Ffern in collaboration with the nature writer and author of the Seasonal Almanac, Lia Leendertz. Lia is joined by novelist Zoe Gilbert, composer and sound recordist Alice Boyd and folk musician Gwilym Bowen Rhys. Geoff Bird produces and Catriona Bolt is Ffern's in-house researcher. Welcome to episode 157 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast!Happy New Year everyone! In our annual tradition of setting the bar way too high for ourselves, we have a great show lined up to kick off 2023. Joining us this week are the 2022 World Champions and the only Men's team to go undefeated in every event of the ÖTILLÖ World Series. Of course we are talking about none other than Hugo Tormento and Max Andersson, A.K.A., Team Ark Swimrun Hugo and Max. This was a super fun conversation and we can't wait to share it with all of you.But first…Training UpdateWe're still in off-season mode but our race calendar is starting to come together and it looks like our first Swimrun event will be in May at Bend Racing's new Sunriver Swimrun in Bend, Oregon.ShoutoutsIn our Gear of the Year Awards episode with the Swimrun Labs we put out a call for gear ideas that don't exist yet and we got some awesome responses. We will save the details for the next edition of Gear Talk but we wanted to shoutout some of the folks that had great/creative/violative of the laws of physics/genius ideas. In no particular order: shoutouts to Katie, Pepe, Brendan, Henrik (a.k.a. Swimrun Pappa), Naomi, and Matt.Feats of EnduranceThis week's Feats of Endurance winner is Vlad Caireac. He posted a workout from his native Moldova. He is our first Strava Club member from this Eastern European country and we're here for it! Thanks for joining the club.Make sure to sign up for our LTBz Strava Club (which just passed 500 members!!!) and join Swimrunners from around the world as they train for stuff. This Week in SwimrunWe are going to get back into the swing of things for this segment but wanted to share a quick update on our plans for the show in 2023. Last year we focused a lot on our own Swimrun journey to ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship with our Countdown to ÖTILLÖ series and while we are planning on heading back to Sweden this year for another bite at that apple (if we re-qualify), we aren't planning on emphasizing our personal journey as much. Rather, we are re-focusing on helping grow the sport and showcase why we think that the sport is so great and why everyone with any propensity for swimming and running should try it. In that vein, we will be producing more "course preview" episodes for races on our bucket list, since living vicariously is the best we can hope for given our family and work responsibilities. We will also be producing more content specifically for beginners that we will be featuring in our IG and YouTube feeds. Now for the “news.”In the bummer department, Ödyssey Swimrun recently announced that their Coastal Dunes race which was scheduled for early March was forced to be canceled due to permitting issues. All registered participants have been notified. In other (non-bummer) Ödyssey news, they have opened registration for all their 2023 events which include Casco Bay, Mackinac Island, Orcas Island, and Austin. If that wasn't enough for you, registration for all their events is 30% off through the month of January! Time for a short PSA: As someone who's worked in the endurance space for almost a decade I can tell you that putting on races, and especially Swimrun events, is a painstaking and expensive process with very little guarantee of success early on and most races are, in effect, crowdsourced by registration revenue. Registering early (and often) helps make sure that the events that we know and love keep happening year after year. Moral of the story, register for your Swimrun events early, save money, and help race directors put on amazing events.Over in Sweden, ÖTILLÖ announced that their Isles of Scilly event will not take place in 2023. They also mentioned that a new race destination will be announced in like 100 days from now. Our investigative team is hard at work trying to figure out the destination and so far we are pretty sure that the event will be in the Northern Hemisphere. More details forthcoming on that!In other ÖTILLÖ news, registration for the 2023 ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship via Swimrun ranking points is open! The registration window is open until January 20, 2023 and teams will be informed on February 2nd (Swimrun Christmas) on whether they will be spending a 9 months obsessing about the Stockholm Archipelago. Finally, want to hang out and train with one of the best Swimrun coaches in the world? Nicolas Remires of Envol Swimrun is hosting a training camp at the Playitas Resort on Fuerteventura from January 30-February 6th. Just google the location and you'll want to attend. Reach out to Envol Coaching for more information about that camp.Show BusinessAs you heard at the beginning of the show, the people have spoken and apparently we are the winner's of Swimrun.com's 2022 Maven Award (for Individual(s) who have widened participation, awareness and growth of the sport.) Thank you to everyone that voted, we are truly humbled that our brand of super niche content has an audience and that people find it helpful. The 2022 World Champions: Team Ark Swimrun Hugo and MaxWhat can we say about Hugo and Max that isn't inundated with superlatives? They had an incredible 2022 Swimrun season where they won every race that they entered, set the course record at ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship in a commanding fashion, and all the while being great ambassadors for the sport. In this conversation we chatted with them about how they teamed up, how they trained and managed to prepare for a busy racing season, we got mini-race reports from their World Series races and, of course, discussed their record-breaking performance at ÖTILLÖ. As we mentioned at the outset, we may have set the bar too high for ourselves…Enjoy our conversation with Hugo and Max, reigning World Champions and all around amazing human beings. That's it for this week's show. Ribosomes are tiny protein-making factories found inside cells, and a crucial component of life. And now a team of scientists has figured out how to make them self-replicate outside of cells. Without getting all Mary Shelley, the team says this is a step towards creating artificial life.On a trip to the Isles of Scilly, Rowan found a spectacular lifeform of the week. On the shores of Porthcressa beach on St Mary's island, he found a solar-powered sea slug, with the help of Scott and Samaya of Scilly Rockpool Safaris.America's West Coast is still being ravaged by wildfires, and not only are they set to become more frequent as the climate warms, but they're going to become even more intense. Chelsea, who can see the orange skies of the fires from her home, discusses the rising risk of so-called ‘extreme wildfires'. Rowan makes the point that new research shows that transitioning from fossil fuels to clean energy could lead to savings of $5 to $15 trillion dollars. Centenarians - people who live to be older than 100 - who have all the markers of Alzheimer's, don't appear to be affected by the disease. The team finds out about an intriguing new finding that upends our understanding of amyloid plaques, the proteins we think are closely associated with dementia. Climate change artist and Australian playwright David Finnigan discusses his latest play ‘You're Safe Til 2024: Deep History', which he performed at this year's Edinburgh fringe festival and which is coming to London. It looks at the 75,000 year history of our impact on the environment from the lens of the 2019 Australian bushfires. On the pod are Rowan Hooper, Chelsea Whyte, Abby Beall and Carissa Wong. Welcome to episode 128 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! We have a great show for everyone this week! Joining us in Studio G are Liza Dunham and Mike Schiepke, a.k.a., Team Cali-Coed. We first met Liza and Mike in Catalina in 2020 and kept seeing them at the races. We've wanted to have them on the podcast for a while and we're super stoked to share our conversation. But first...Training UpdateÖdyssey Swimrun Casco Bay is 5 weeks away!! We've got some “robust” Swimrun practices coming up the next few weekends as we start fine tuning our training and work on transitions, swimming straight, fueling as much as possible, etc.ShoutoutsThis week we are shouting out our newest Patron on Patreon: Lisa Decker. Lisa has been a supporter of us since the beginning and we were super stoked to finally get to meet her in person at last year's Ödyssey Swimrun Austin event. She even had a LTBz sticker on her car. Thank you so much for the support Lisa!Feats of EnduranceWe haven't done a feats of endurance segment in a few weeks so there are several worthy winners that we want to highlight. In no particular order, a tip of the hat to Justin Young (training for the new Folsom Swimrun), Justin May (Swimrunning in Bellingham), and Scott Suurmeyer (crushing a 106 mile Unbound gravel race in Kansas). Keep up the strong work!Make sure to sign up for our LTBz Strava Club and join Swimrunners from around the world as they train for stuff. This Week in SwimrunWelcome to the LTBz news desk!Since our last TWIS, there have been a bunch of awesome races and even better stories. Our favorite story though is the return of the super team of Fanny Kuhn and Desirée Andersson at ÖTILLÖ Isles of Scilly. True to form, they crushed the female division and finished third overall. One of our favorite events, EX Swimrun's Ark Supersprint took place this past weekend and it was an epic day. Desirée repeated as Women's champion and Hugo Tormento (a.k.a. 2022 Male Swimrunner of the year if the award was being given today) was the Men's champion. We plan on having EX race director Nicholas Roman back on the show to talk about this year's race so stay tuned for that! Looking forward, there are a couple really cool events coming up this weekend that we want to highlight.Over in the UK, As Keen As Mustard's Nene Park Swimrun Festival is taking place this weekend and we can't wait to see all the photos. We love this race series and highly recommend that folks check out our interview with Nicky and Chelsey Bailey, the mother and daughter race directing duo of As Keen As Mustard. Also in the UK, the folks at We Swimrun are hosting their Tal Y Llyn Swimrun this Sunday. It's a solo, sprint course of 10km (8km trail, 2km swim) in Snowdonia National Park, Wales. This race is ideal for first timers, and a great place to meet a future race partner!Skipping over to France, the seventh edition of Swimrun Cote Vermeille is taking place over two days this weekend. This event offers 5 distances including an ÖTILLÖ Merit Race distance of 63km which looks stout to say the least. New for this year, they are offering a relay option for the 63km distance which is pretty cool and the first relay option that we've seen. Our favorite distance might be the 4km kids Swimrun though. That is it for this week. Feel free to reach out and let us know if there's anything that you'd like for us to mention on the show.UpdatesFor folks racing Ödyssey Swimrun Casco Bay in July, we are going to host our 2nd Annual Post-Race Party at a brewery in downtown Portland somewhere. We will share more details as we figure them out but we hope to see you there. Our friends at Precision Fuel and Hydration have just released their new p30 Caffeine Gels and spoiler alert: they are delicious! Best of all they don't taste like science. Want to check them out? Use the code LOWTIDE22 at checkout to save 15% off of your first order.Team Cali-CoedIt was so great to finally sit down with Liza and Mike for a proper chat. We joke around a lot about folks needing to pass the vibe check when it comes to Swimrun and in our opinion Team Cali-Coed just exude cool Swimrun vibes. In this conversation we talked about their Swimrun journey, gushed over Tower 26 and Gerry Rodrigues's training methodologies, and why Swimrun is the greatest. Liza and Mike embody everything that is great about Swimrun and we know that you will love this conversation as much as we did. Enjoy! That's it for this week's show. Starting her walk overlooking the harbour outside the Star Castle Hotel once a Civil War fortress Clare hikes around the largest of the Isles of Scilly in the company of Will Wagstaff and Lucy McRobert. Will came to the island in 1985 and began giving walking tours which he has done ever since pointing out the variety of flora and fauna encouraged by the mild climate. Lucy McRobert came to St Marys three years ago with her keen birdwatching husband and infant daughter. Lucy is now just as keen a birder and like every islander has different roles including taking care of stranded seal pups each winter. As they take in the diverse landscapes of this small island they discuss the appeal of life there. Producer: Maggie Ayre
