Across three millennia, the goddess Astarte was recast as the demon Astaroth: a transformation that reveals more about humanity's fear of the sacred feminine than any real change in divinity. This episode traces that metamorphosis from ancient Mesopotamian goddess to grimoire demon and modern occult archetype. Drawing on sources from biblical polemics and Renaissance demonology, as well as feminist and queer reimaginings, this exploration examines how Astaroth embodies the persistence of forbidden knowledge, gender fluidity, and spiritual defiance. Was Astaroth truly a fallen angel or the suppressed face of divine wisdom, buried under centuries of theological sabotage? CONNECT & SUPPORT

New ways to teach finance and accounting with Ashley Faulkner and David Waite

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects higher than average growth in accounting and finance positions in the coming decade. In fact, over 715,000 openings are predicted in the business and finance sphere between now and 2031. With such strong growth (and earning potential), it's no wonder educators want to prepare students for jobs in accounting and finance. In this episode, we sat down with two accounting educators: Ashley Faulkner and David Waite. Ashley is a teacher at Triton High School in North Carolina, where she is a strong certification advocate. Over the past 11 years, Ashley has earned more than 40 certifications—and helped her students earn more than 1,150 individual certifications. She has also served as an FBLA adviser and as the North Carolina Southeast Region advisor. Outside her teaching career, Ashley is the chief financial officer for Simple Web Solutions, Inc., EM Audio, Inc., and Butler Faulkner Enterprise, and she is the mother of two active children.  David began his career as an auditor and was one of the rare humans who genuinely enjoyed it. After earning his CPA, he spent 15 years in public and private accounting before discovering his passion for teaching. An unexpected opportunity to teach accounting in Hawaii led him to academia, where he now focuses on bridging the gap between theory and practice. His teaching philosophy is simple: motivate students to prepare before class, engage actively during class, and tackle real-world challenges after class. Drawing from his industry experience, David strives to bring accounting to life for his students and future professionals.  We talk with Ashley and David about the skills accounting and finance professionals need and how to teach these skills in the classroom. Plus, we dive into connecting with local businesses for students' internship and job opportunities. And last, but not least, how certification empowers students along the way.  Learn more about Intuit certification here.  Connect with educators like Ashley and David in our CERTIFIED Educator Community here.  Get all the CERTIFIED Educator's Conference details here.

The relationship between science and religion has long been a heated debate and is becoming an ever more popular topic. The scientific capacity to manipulate and change humans and their environment through genetic engineering, life extension, and AI is going to take a huge leap forward in the twenty-first century, provoking endless debates around humans “playing God”. But what do we mean by this? Asking this question is surprisingly hard work. Attempts to 'essentialise' science, let alone religion, quickly run into trouble. Where are the boundaries? Whose definition of science is definitive? Which concept of religious is the authoritative one? Ultimately, neither “science” nor “religion” can be pinned down to one single meaning or definition. Rather, they encompass a family of definitions that relate to one another in a complex web of shifting ways. Drawing on extensive research with over a hundred leading thinkers in the UK — including Martin Rees, Brian Cox, Susan Greenfield, A.C. Grayling, Ray Tallis, Linda Woodhead, Steve Bruce, Adam Rutherford, Robin Dunbar, Francesca Stavrakopoulou, and Iain McGilchrist — The Landscapes of Science and Religion takes the much-needed step of asking what science and religion actually are, before turning to the familiar question of how they relate to one another. Building on this, by paying particular attention to those who sense some form of conflict here, Spencer and Waite explore where the perceived conflict really lies. What exactly are people disagreeing about when they disagree about science and religion, and what, if anything, can we do to improve that disagreement and bring about a fruitful dialogue between these two important human endeavours. Tim Manners is a writer, communications consultant and baseball fan.  He is a former FM-radio disc jockey, publicist and magazine publisher. His latest project is Schoolboy: The Untold Journey of a Yankees Hero which he co-wrote with baseball great Waite Hoyt, even though Hoyt had been deceased for almost 40 years before Tim began the project. That story and so much more are in the book and we touched upon some of it in our discussion.  Waite Hoyt signed with the New York Giants in 1915 when he was a junior in high school.  When he was younger, he was faced with the possibility of having both hands amputated, but overcame that and a lot more to become the best pitcher for the New York Yankees in the 1920s as he and his teammates, including Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig won three of their World Championships.   Jimmy Carbone is back and this time he and Sean Ludwig engage in a fascinating discussion about whole hog cooking which you may get to try at his upcoming event, Pig Island NYC.  Pig Island NYC is back for its 16th year on September 6, 2025 when, more than 20 chefs come together at Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden to serve up some of their best dishes.  For more information or to purchase tickets go to  https://pigisland.com/ Sean Ludwig is the founder of NYC BBQ, http://www.nycbbq.com a website and newsletter with news and information on all things barbecue in the NYC metro area.  He is also a co-founder with Ryan Cooper of The Smoke Sheet, https://www.bbqnewsletter.com which is a weekly newsletter that curates the latest national barbecue news, upcoming events, books to read, podcasts to listen to, videos to watch, recipes, and so much more.  Sean provides his thoughts on Pig Island and discusses whole hog cooking with Jimmy Carbone. My guest today is Daniel Waite Penny, a journalist and cultural critic whose recent work investigates the connection between masculinity and the climate crisis. He's the creator of NonToxic, a podcast exploring men and sustainability, and co-creator of Carbon Bros, an investigative series made in collaboration with Drilled. Here's an overview of the series:You've heard it from cable news pundits, Democratic strategists, and your favorite YouTuber: young men swung the last U.S. election for Trump. Understanding what's driving “the manosphere” and how to reach the young men in its grips is on everyone's mind right now, but we're zooming in on a different corner of it: the intersection between male grievance culture and climate denial. Why are men less likely than women to believe in climate change, or take personal or political actions against it? What does their reluctance to deal with the climate crisis have to do with men's shift to the right in general? And what can be done to reverse it?Daniel and I first connected years ago when he interviewed me about the mythopoetic men's movement. In our conversation today , we return to the themes of men, meaning, and the cultural forces shaping our times. We trace the strategic targeting of men by fossil fuel interests, the rise of the manosphere, and the appeal of dominance-based narratives offered by figures like Trump and Tate. The Mythic Masculine is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. We ask why so many men resist climate action, and how the deeper hunger for belonging, nobility, and story has been misdirected. We explore the absence of an inspiring masculine vision within progressive politics, and what might be possible if men were invited into a role of protection and stewardship.Would love to hear your comments below! For men who wish to join me in-person, I have one more Awakening the Wild Erotic weekend Aug 22-24 on Vancouver Island.
