The Uintah Mountains of Northeaster Utah are one of the most scenic places in North America and said to be a prime destination for wilderness hikers, backpackers, and sportsmen. It also attracts gold seekers due to its history of being a source of gold deposits for both the ancient Aztecs and the early Spanish explorers, who enslaved many of the local Ute Indians and forced them into laboring in the mines. When the Mormons settled in Salt Lake City, 100 miles west of the Uintahs, they learned from a Ute Chief of the location of a rich mine in those mountains, but only if a pact could be made and kept that only one man could know the location. The secret to the location died with the descendants of the man who made that pact- and only a very few Utes know of its location. Legend has it they still guard it, and those who get too close don't come out alive. We celebrate a rich mosaic of free-thinking, spiritually-questing individuals joined in common support and action. We welcome diversity including diversity of beliefs from divine believers to humanists, from pagans to atheists and agnostics. We believe in the compassion of the human heart, the warmth of community, the pursuit of justice and the search of meaning in our lives. We gather with gratitude on traditional Cree lands that are now a part of Treaty Six and shared by many nations. A treaty is an inheritance, a responsibility and a relationship. May we be good neighbours to one another, good stewards to our planet and good ancestors to our children. #LGBTQ #UU #UnitarianUniversalist #Unitarian Church of Edmonton #YEG #WelcomingCongregation
More people are choosing experiences over material things; Time well spent rather than time on the clock. The rising "gatherings" of Winter Count and Rabbit Stick is a demonstration of how people want to get into away from the corporate world of screens, cubicles and punch clocks -- and back to working in nature with natural materials. In this episode we explore the people who define this movement including a leather tanner, a basket weaver, a flit knapper, a mountain man and a young man who dropped out of a lucrative sales career to make his own bows and arrows so he could hunt his own food. Are these people crazy? Or are these perhaps the last of the normal people in a world that gone insane? It's a fascinating study. We also examine the changing diets of neolithic people and what the Ute Indians of Utah ate.
For Land's Sake host Bill Kight explores the history of our area's original stewards, the Ute Indians. He talks about broken treaties, white 'assimilation' efforts and forced relocations. Bill Kight also discusses the need for reconciliation, and what we as individuals should do about injustice when we're made aware of it.
Marvel at newly-discovered archaeological finds of the Ute Indians’ ancient lifestyle — revealed through literal twigs of history. The uncovering of “wickiup” sleeping shelters — ephemeral, temporary homes that pre-date tipis — tells the tale of nomadic Natives following the seasons. But then came horses and everything changed.
The banners in our sanctuary reflect our commitment to seek “wisdom from the world’s religions that inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life.” Today we unveil a new banner that represents Indigenous spirituality. It has been created for us by our friends at the Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society and is a long-awaited addition to our sanctuary. This banner will remind us of our commitment not only to seeking wisdom but also to reconciliation in Canada, which is all about seeking wholeness and balance that has eluded our society for so long. We offer special thanks to Elder Rose Wabasca, our guest musician Lloyd Cardinal, and our Friends from Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society. 00:00 1 Welcome by Gordon Ritchie 02:38 2 Prelude and Banner Procession music by Lloyd Cardinal 09:32 3 Opening Words “For the Beauty of the Earth” by Barbara J . Five years after the Aurora Theater shooting, we check in with husband and wife Caleb and Katie Medley. Caleb was shot in the head while Katie escaped uninjured along with their unborn baby, whom she later gave birth to while her husband was in a coma. Caleb had been pursuing a comedy career before the attack and says the biggest challenges he faces now are being confined to a wheelchair and having trouble speaking. Then, Senator Michael Bennet talks about the future of the health care debate and what he'd do to improve on the current system. Plus, a contemporary view of the Ute Indians in their newly renovated museum.
On this episode of Expanded Perspectives the guys start off talking about Zenkerella insignis, the critter caught on Bioko, is one of the world's most ancient and mysterious mammals. Until now, it was known only by its fossils and 11 scattered specimens, many of which had been languishing in natural history collections for over 100 years. Researchers who were interested in the species (and there aren't many) had little to go on aside from a hind limb here, a few teeth there. No scientist in history has ever seen it alive. Then, according to biologist Elizabeth Congdon, an assistant professor at Bethune-Cookman University, the state of Florida could have a serious capybara problem—and it might be the fault of exotic pet owners. Then, it's been a year since two treasure hunters claimed to have found a Nazi gold train buried under Poland and yet no Nazi gold train has actually been produced. That isn't stopping a team of 35 people, who plan to resume the hunt Monday, Deutsche Welle reports. Then, care to learn more about 400-foot tsunamis on Mars? Now you can, after Nasa announced it is making all its publicly funded research available online for free. The space agency has set up a new public web portal called Pubspace, where the public can find Nasa-funded research articles on everything from the chances of life on one of Saturn’s moons to the effects of space station living on the hair follicles of astronauts. After the break Cam and Kyle talk about the iconic "Skinwalker Ranch". In northern Utah there exists a “ranch” so strange, so bizarre, that the National Institute for Discovery Science (owned by Las Vegas businessman and billionaire Bob Bigelow) purchased it solely for scientific research purposes. Located in the Uintah Basin near the town of Fort Duchesne, paranormal phenomenon such as strange creatures, bizarre objects, flying black triangles, animal mutilations, and telepathic messages, have been reported on the 480 acre Skinwalker Ranch for hundreds of years. It is estimated that over half the population in the area surrounding the ranch have witnessed unusual paranormal activity on, or near what became known as the “Strangest Place on Earth”. Even the local Ute Indians believe the land to be cursed – and tribe members are strictly forbidden to enter the property. Thanks for listening to Expanded Perspectives!
