Directions of north, east, south and west

Finding new ways to pray always lights up my soul. It's fun to try new ways of connecting to the Divine. Growing up in my Catholic faith, I was guided to consider “spiritual bouquets” as a gift to God and others. Spiritual bouquets are offered to express love, support and appreciation. I have come to learn other spiritual practices and use them in my spiritual bouquets. The Lakota Prayer to the Four Directions is one such practice. In many native cultures across the North American continent, there is a unifying spiritual element that has been used for many years to bring wisdom and healing to the people, it is called the medicine wheel. Nick Polizzi describes the medicine wheel is composed of four quadrants. Each direction North, East, South and West carries deep meaning. Each quadrant has its own color and spirit keeper. Envisioning both is part of the meditation. This healing prayer can be used for yourself or a loved one. As you imagine this person laying down, you can consider the four directions as a guide to the focus of your meditation. Their head is the north, East the left side, South their feet and West the right side. Vera Dery has written a beautiful prayer to go with this meditation.
This month, we've been exploring the power of compasses as magical tools for creating an enchanted life, aligning the four directions with the core elements of our existence—North(Soul), South (Body), East (Mind), and West (Heart). In this episode, I pull Angel Wisdom Tarot and Affirmation cards for each direction, revealing divine insights into your spiritual path, personal growth, and manifestation journey. Whether it's following your soul's passionate calling, breaking free from procrastination, embracing helpful guidance, or allowing transformation to unfold, this reading is filled with messages to guide you! We explore an intense feeling of presence, joy and love that I experienced in a premonitory dream, revealing hope for the future and the eternal renewal of life. The Medicine Wheel will reveal its power as we advance throughout its axis and spokes, and I provide some of my research findings. We are led back to the Medicine Wheel by Eagle/Walking Turtle's wisdom about the Indians of the Great Plains, contained in his book, Indian America. We are led to honor Mother Earth, Sister Turtle and Brother Frog, the 4th, 5th and 6th stations in the Great Hoop. The concept of approaching issues and life's problems by dividing them into fours, exemplified by the quarters of the Wheel, provides a tool for us all to contemplate the many sides of any issue, and the revelatory position that allows us to reconcile what seem like opposing forces or ideas. A contemporary and practical guide to Mayan astrological techniques• Discusses the logic and meaning of the 20 day-signs of the Mayan calendar• Explains the many cycles of Mayan astrology, such as the 9-day cycle of the Night Lords and the 13-day trecena• Contains extensive tables of Mayan astrological data, allowing readers to cast their own Mayan horoscopesHow to Practice Mayan Astrology presents a contemporary guide to one of the most sophisticated astrological systems ever developed. Like other ancient peoples, the Maya looked to the cycles of the planets as markers of time and designators of order. The predictable cycles they observed became codified in the Mayan calendar and astrological system as a way of organizing the seeming chaos of human life.Mayan astrology is based on 20 named days that are cycled 13 times to create a 260-day calendar, the Tzolkin. The authors explain the symbolism, logic, and meaning of the 20 day-signs; how these signs reflect 260 possible personality types; and how they can be used for divination. They also explain the important role of the Four Directions and the planet Venus in one's personality matrix and life issues. Included are extensive, easy-to-use tables of Mayan astrological data, allowing readers to determine their day-signs, to see how these signs are also influenced by the cycle of the Night Lords and the 13-day trecena, and to cast their own horoscopes.BRUCE SCOFIELD is the author of seven books on astrology, including Day-Signs: Native American Astrology from Ancient Mexico and Signs of the Time: An Introduction to Mesoamerican Astrology. He has been a practicing astrologer since 1969 and lives in Amherst, Massachusetts. Barry C. Orr is a software developer who designed some of the early computer programs used by technical astrologers. He is coauthor, with Bruce Scofield, of the Maya-Aztec Astro Report, a software program that identifies personality delineations based on the Mayan calendar. We look at foraging from two perspectives in this episode of Seasoned. What approach do chefs take when foraging? Chef Plum forages for fiddleheads in northwestern Connecticut along the Housatonic River with chef Chrissy Tracey. She explains why she believes foraging is sacred. After their harvest, the chefs head back to Chrissy's kitchen to sauté the fiddleheads in garlic and lemon. And, Seasoned contributor/producer Tagan Engel talks with Chris “Painted Turtle” Harris about how he, as an herbalist and elder in the Mohegan Tribe, approaches a forage in the forest.GUESTS: Chrissy Tracey: Forager, private chef, content creator, and recipe developer. Her first cookbook, Forage & Feast publishes spring 2024 Chris Harris Painted Turtle: Herbalist, Pipe Carrier and member of the Council of Elders for the Mohegan Tribe FEATURED RECIPE: Tagan Engel's Foraged Berry Hand Pies LEARN MORE: Mohegan Medicine Woman Gladys Tantaquidgeon's book, Folk Medicine of the Delaware and Related Algonkian Indians influenced Chris's approach to foraging. Gladys co-founded the Tantaquidgeon Museum in Uncasville in 1931. We've all done it; we've created Sacred Space by calling the Spirits of the Four Directions. We stand at each direction and draw the appropriate pentagram and we Invoke the Spirits that have the appropriate character. But where does all that mumbo jumbo come from? Some say Gerald Gardner, which is correct to a point. Others say that Witches have been doing that on their own and in secret, like, forever - which is really not at all true. So this week we're going to find out who or what the Watchtowers are and where they came from. They may or may not have something to do with Archangels, and Archangels may or may not be a Christian thing. Don't worry; I will not leave you in suspense for long. But, like everything else, The Watchtowers DO have something to do with Stars; and so does the story of Orpheus, and his Lyre. We'll see how those tie together. And I also we'll hear from Lon Milo Duquette as he talks about "The Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram". Be well. Do good. Enjoy the show!
Today's podcast episode is an invitation to perceive a more honest Winter through the lens of the Four Directions. In one of my most recent personal Substack posts, I wrote about how the stories we're often given about Winter, don't seem to line up to what Winter actually ends up feeling like in our bodies. And instead of continuing on cycles of feeling guilty for not resting enough, being "jolly" enough, or hibernating enough, what if we could rewrite our relationship with Winter to be more aligned to what feels authentic in our forms? Energetically, Winter is the season of depth, imaginative rest, and sacred responsibility. In the wheel of the four directions, Winter stations North, holding the medicine of the Nurturing, Responsible, and Generative Adult. In the Northern Hemisphere, we transit through the zodiacal seasons of Capricorn (our work and place in the world), Aquarius (who we are in the context of ecosystems and community), and Pisces (the deep world and the futures we're imagining). It's so interesting how in Western culture, we almost only see Winter as a time for holidays, feasting, dormancy, and sleep, but there is so much more happening energetically and beneath the surface of the sleeping Earth body when her skin gets a little cold. Beneath the frozen surfaces, our individual and collective bodies are teeming with the spirit of potential. There is a lot to establish about ourselves in the Winter. What would it look like to lean into this? Well-being and wellness, it should be noted, are not the same. “Well-being” is an aspirational state of life, while “wellness” refers to the interventions humans perform on themselves to improve their health. Our state of living is not always well, and sometimes there is a need for measures that bring us closer to alignment with the universe.Frederick Tsao from the book Dawn of an Era of Well-BeingIn our quest to overcome the challenges that stand in the way of a better future—an era of “well-being” as our program frequently makes reference—we need to consider paths to spiritual betterment which help show us the way. Our guest today is Alberto Villoldo, a trained practitioner of western medicine who has also spent decades studying the shamanic healing practices of the Amazon and Andes. Dr. Villoldo will engage our hosts with a penetrating conversation investigating how shamanic traditions of South America can inform the western thought process. At the nexus of science and spirituality lies the key to our evolution as a species, and the basis of a healing process that will make true well-being accessible. This discussion delves into the evolution of the human brain and its chemistry, and how the shamanic tradition can help reinforce our connection to both nature and a higher level of consciousness.Alberto Villoldo, PhD, is a medical anthropologist and best-selling author who has studied the shamanic healing practices of the Amazon and Andes for over 30 years. He is the founder of the Four Winds Society, and his recent books include The Heart of the Shaman: Stories and Practices of the Luminous Warrior and The Wisdom Wheel: A Mythic Journey through the Four Directions For more information on Shamanic Energy Medicine, please visit this link to Alberto Villoldo's organization The Four Winds Society Dr. Villoldo's latest book The Wisdom Wheel: A Mythic Journey through the Four Directions can purchased here The Heart of the Shaman: Stories and Practices of the Luminous Warrior can be purchased here

This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, InsideTracker, and Pendulum.I've always been a big proponent of learning from those who came before us. The knowledge of ancient cultures is one piece of the foundation of modern medicine, but much shamanic wisdom has been ignored and is now being lost. It benefits us to stop and think about what's going on below the surface, the things we can't see—for our health, our perception of reality, everything. Invisible bacteria is one example, wisdom is another. Today I am thrilled to talk to my friend Alberto Villoldo about the role of ancient wisdom in health, healing, and aging optimally. Medical anthropologist Alberto Villoldo Ph.D. is an international bestselling author who has researched the shamanic healing practices of the Amazon and Andes for over 25 years. He is the founder of the Four Winds Society, an organization dedicated to the bridging of ancient shamanic traditions with modern medicine and psychology. Dr. Villoldo is the author of numerous books, including Power Up Your Brain; Shaman, Healer, Sage; Mending the Past and Healing the Future with Soul Retrieval; The Four Insights; Courageous Dreaming; One Spirit Medicine, and Grow a New Body. His latest book is The Wisdom Wheel: A Mythic Journey through the Four Directions, which we talk more about in this episode. Susan specializes in adapting basic yoga poses to fit individual bodies and includes mindfulness, breathing, and concentration to connect a person more deeply to themselves. Federal judge finds Native Americans Denied Voter Registration Opportunities by State of SDToday's Links: Articles: Court Rules That South Dakota Failed To Offer Adequate Voter Registration, Litigation: SD Voter Registration, South Dakota ruled noncompliant with federal voter law, The Federal Court's Ruling Ways to get involved: Native American Rights Fund, Four DirectionsYou're listening to the American Democracy Minute, keeping YOUR government by and for the people.A partial ruling on an important voting rights case was announced last week, finding the State of South Dakota in violation of the National Voter Registration Act. The U.S. District Court found that the state had multiple violations, among them the inadequate implementation of voter registration locations which particularly affected tribal areas. In September 2020, the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, the Oglala Sioux Tribe, a voting rights organization and individual voters sued the state and its election officials arguing the state didn't offer voter registration options at motor vehicle agencies or state-run public assistance offices as required by the National Voter Registration Act.Jacqueline De León, a staff attorney for the Native American Rights Fund, said in a statement, “We documented Native American residents routinely being underserved by the state of South Dakota when it came to voter registration. Native Americans are not being offered the voter registration opportunities they are entitled to under law. We told the state that there was a problem, but they did not fix it. Apparently they did not see the disenfranchisement of Native voters and the silencing of Native voices as an important issue. We do.”The federal judge agreed, ruling that the state did not offer voter registration at some motor vehicle and public assistance locations as required by the federal law, and hadn't properly trained employees. Several other parts of the suit are still in litigation. There's more on this lawsuit and a link to the Native American Rights Fund and voting rights group Four Directions at AmericanDemocracyMinute.org. For the American Democracy Minute, I'm Brian Beihl.

And I also have a spoken word meditation from Ted Andrews, called "The Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram". Be well. Do good. Enjoy the show!

Today on the podcast I share another channelled meditation from The Spirit Sisters Retreat in Sedona. While we were there, we explored the Medicine Wheel with our guide. The Medicine Wheel, sometimes known as the Sacred Hoop, has been used by generations of various Native American tribes for health and healing. It embodies the Four Directions, as well as Father Sky, Mother Earth, and Spirit Tree—all of which symbolize dimensions of health and the cycles of life. The Medicine Wheel can take many different forms. It can be an artwork such as artifact or painting, or it can be a physical construction on the land. The medicine wheel we explored was made on the land of rocks and stones. Hundreds or even thousands of Medicine Wheels have been built on Native lands in North America over the last several centuries. Movement in the Medicine Wheel and in Native American ceremonies is circular, and typically in a clockwise, or “sun-wise” direction. This helps to align with the forces of Nature, such as gravity and the rising and setting of the Sun. Meanings of the Four Directions Different tribes interpret the Medicine Wheel differently. Each of the Four Directions (East, South, West, and North) is typically represented by a distinctive color, such as black, red, yellow, and white, which for some stands for the human races. The Directions can also represent: Stages of life: birth, youth, adult (or elder), death Seasons of the year: spring, summer, winter, fall Aspects of life: spiritual, emotional, intellectual, physical Elements of nature: fire (or sun), air, water, and earth Animals: Eagle, Bear, Wolf, Buffalo and many others Ceremonial plants: tobacco, sweet grass, sage, cedar Let us honor this tradition now……and prepare for ritual and meditation Stay connected with me for the next Spirit Sisters Retreat... https://www.tinaconroy.com Thank you for listening Many Blessings~A-Ho

The 4 directions are governed by animal symbols: The Red Vermillon Bird of the South, The Azure Dragon of the East, The White Tiger of the West, The Black Turtle of the North. The Yellow Dragon of the Centre oversees it all.Sit back and enjoy the ride as Jimi Wollumbin takes us on a journey to explore these majestic symbols that explain the processes of life. These mythopoetic underpinnings emerged from the hunter gatherer cultures of ancient China and over time evolved into the Wu Xing that we are more familiar with today. Jimi Wollumbin studied Eastern Philosophy and Religion at ANU before studying TCM, and in this discussion he shares his wealth of knowledge and passion of this topic in a way that left both Phi and I in a lovely lucid-dreaming like state. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did!Jimi Wollumbin practices in Uki in Northern NSW, Australia, and has 15yrs of clinical experience in Chinese medicine, Ayurveda and Persian. Further details of his clinical practice can be found hereJimi is passionate about social causes and established the One Health organisation in 2005 which is the largest holistic and natural medicine based NGO in the world.
