"Death and dying are central to our culture." Grand rising soul family! Woah, I'm so excited and proud to share this episode with y'all. Today, I'm speaking with Dr. Hinemoa Elder. Hinemoa is the mother of two, a fellow of the Royal Australia and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists and a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist. She is the author of two best-selling books. “Aroha. Māori wisdom for a contented life lived in harmony with our planet” was published in 2020 and is included in the Oprah Winfrey Book club. Her new book “Wawata. Daily Māori wisdom guided by Hina, the Māori moon, was published in October 2022. She has a PhD (2012) and NZ Health Research Council Eru Pomare Post-Doctoral Fellowship (2014-18) researching traumatic brain injury and has developed Māori specific approaches for the whole whānau (extended families) affected by traumatic brain injuries. To be completely honest with you, I don't even know what was the first touchpoint between Hinemoa and myself but I remember being incredibly inspired by her natural, authentic, powerful yet tender way of being in the world. I admire Hinemoa's strength and clarity and find her mission of acting as a spokesperson for the Māori culture beyond inspiring and important. In this conversation, we explore the deep connections between Māori culture, spirituality, and mental health. We discuss the importance of intentional spaces, the lessons learned from nature, and the profound impact of personal journeys and legacies. Hinemoa shares insights into the Māori understanding of death and dying, emphasizing the significance of rituals and the spiritual journey of the wairua. The conversation also addresses men's health, emotional well-being, and the societal pressures that contribute to mental health struggles. I know you're gonna get somehting out of this. Move well out there, I love you!

The Kickapoo Indian Medicine Company was owned by two Euro-American men in the late 1800s who used the tribe's identity to sell so-called "Indian remedies."
In this panel discussion, two Christian indigenous leaders explain some of their spiritual heritage and how they have found deep resonances with the creation gospel in them. David Hart joins in, and explains that, far from being heretical, their views are close to the original views on creation developed by the church Fathers – and in particular the brilliant 7th century theologian Maximus the Confessor. The panel consisted of Australian First Nations Pastors Ray Minniecon and Gabriel Bani with David Benley Hart. Moderated by Tony Golsby Smith. Recorded at St Johns, Glebe, Sydney on Aug 17th 2023.
How does an Indigenous person express spirituality grounded in country in the wake of colonisation and the continued colonial nature of our institutions and systems? Dr Garry Worete Deverell, a Trawloolway man from northern Tasmania, joins the podcast to explore country and kin as the building blocks of life and spirituality and the web of past, present and future which is expressed as 'the dreaming'. Paying attention may be the first step in practising a faith that is at home in this land even as we long for the reconciliation which begins in listening to the truth of Australia's violent colonising history. How might we attend to Indigenous voices so that Christian faith and spirituality becomes grounded in caring for country and one another as we cultivate together an imagination for a transformed future? Dr Garry Deverell is a Trawloolway man, connected to the north east of Tasmania. He is the Academic Dean of the School of Indigenous Studies at the University of Divinity in Melbourne, and the author of Gondwana theology: A Trawloolway man reflects on Christian faith.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What does it look like for indigenous people to worship God with the fullness of who they are? In this interview, Dr. Kenny Wallace shares his story as an African-American Choctaw Pawnee who is living out his Christian faith in the way that was gifted to him as an indigenous person. Dr. Kenny helps us explore what it means for indigenous people to worship God in ways that honor their culture and identity. Dr. Kenny graciously answers our questions as we dive into the messiness of exploring racism, cultural appropriation, and the ways in which we have become too comfortable worshiping God only in white, Western ways. Join us as we begin to unravel our biases and learn that the way we've always experienced Christianity might not be the only way.Learn more about NAIITS here!Music from Uppbeat (free for Creators!):https://uppbeat.io/t/sonda/your-own-worldLicense code: 1WX6GFMRRZEGMYVC
One of the many organizations Lewis is involved with is the Parliament of the World's Religions. As a trustee and member for many years, Lewis has shared his Indigenous culture and spirituality at global tables and conversations that he describes as being like "the Olympics of world religions", in that they gather in a different city once every four years to bring together leaders from many nations and spiritual traditions. Lewis also works with the Edmonton Interfaith Centre for Education and Action, and when he speaks about his family's experience as survivors of Canada's residential schools Lewis emphasizes just how important education and action are in the journey of reconciliation. Lewis is also project manager at the Indigenous Knowledge & Wisdom Centre, and he tells us about a new Indigenous cultural centre being constructed in Edmonton's river valley, called Kihciy Askiy (pronounced key-chee-ask-ee for "sacred land").With all of the great stories about his work and the wisdom that Lewis has to share, it was difficult to wrap up our conversation after only 55 minutes. There's way too much packed into this podcast to try to describe in just a short paragraph, so you'll have to listen to the full conversation and hopefully we will have Lewis on as a guest again in the near future!

What do indigenous traditions have to teach us? And what do we Westerners need to unlearn in order to be receptive to indigenous wisdom?Rev. Dr. Randy Woodley is an activist, theologian, wisdom-keeper, and Cherokee descendant. He spends much of his time sharing indigenous traditions through his teaching and his Indigenous Center for Earth Justice, Eloheh. Eloheh is a Cherokee word for harmony, abundance, wholeness, and peace. Join us for a conversation about “making relatives”--whether of land or trees or people different from us; the key components of the “Harmonious Way,” or what Randy calls humanity's “original instructions” for how to live, which are common to all indigenous peoples; and how the lineage of trauma has hurt both those in the margins and those who caused the harm. We'll also explore what it means to decolonize our spirituality and learn from each others' stories.Randy's books include Shalom and the Community of Creation: An Indigenous Vision, and the upcoming book of reflections and practices, Becoming Rooted: One Hundred Days of Reconnecting with Sacred Earth. What would it be like to not just admire nature from a distance, but treat creation as a relative, a teacher, and an expression of the love of the Creator? On this week's episode, I talk with Randy and Edith Woodley. Rev. Dr. Randy Woodley is an author, activist, farmer, scholar, speaker, wisdom keeper, and a Cherokee descendant recognized by the Keetoowah Band. In his work, Dr. Woodley addresses a variety of issues concerning American culture, faith, justice, race, and our relationship with the earth and Indigenous realities. He currently serves as Distinguished Professor of Faith and Culture and Director of Intercultural and Indigenous Studies at George Fox University/Portland Seminary. Randy has written numerous books, including his most recent title, Becoming Rooted: One Hundred Days of Reconnecting with Sacred Earth. His expertise has been sought in national venues such as Time Magazine, Christianity Today, and The Huffington Post. Edith Woodley is a mentor/speaker on issues concerning Indigenous Spirituality and Creation. She is a full-time mother, grandmother and farmer, and has developed a unique relationship with the land and insights concerning how to raise a family on a small farm. Edith is an Eastern Shoshone tribal member and enjoys carrying on the tradition in her family of Native American beadwork with her jewelry. Together, Randy and Edith are co-creators and co-sustainers of Eloheh Indigenous Center for Earth Justice and Eloheh Farm & Seeds. Through an Eloheh experience, they invite people to a deeper spirituality and new relationship with creation while modeling regenerative Earth-tending practices and Earth justice. In this episode, Randy and Edith, invite me to see beauty and creation through a completely new, counter-cultural lens. What if true beauty has nothing to do with being flawless and everything to do with what indigenous cultures call the Harmony Way? What if we laid down our striving and rested in a more beautiful reality, one that says that we are loved by the great Creator just as we are, that we have each been created with a unique beauty and identity, and that we are a part of something much bigger than we are.

Singer & songwriter Cheryl Bear has spent decades reflecting on the intersection of Christian faith and First Nation culture. How does the indigenous understanding of the Creator overlap with the Christian understanding of God? Is indigenous spirituality monotheistic? How has the historical treatment of indigenous people impacted the gospel today? And how does Jesus enter into and redeem cultural narratives––indigenous, western, or otherwise? A re-education to the land is one of the strategies towards a decolonized theology and history. Did you know that on Treaty 7 Lands, before it was Treaty 7, the Stoney people had a positive relationship--initially--with the first missionaries to the region. Mariko B. Ryan is the author of Infinite Threads: 100 Indigenous Maori Insights from Old Maori Manuscripts. "Infinite Threads" is an incredible book which reinterprets the manuscripts of Maori Tohunga (sages) in a way that has incredible relevance today. Rane and Jo both found the book full of wonderful insights which described aspects of Maori culture in a way that parallels mindfulness and yogic practices and philosophy. In this episode, we learn about Mariko's background growing up in Auckland, New Zealand and how Maori culture influenced Mariko's upbringing. We learn about the role of the Tohunga or sage in Maori culture, their oral tradition, and how they came to write down their knowledge to prevent their traditions from being destroyed. Mariko tells us about how it took her many years to find the courage to write the book, and the wonderful reception it has received. She also tells us how she ensured that the book made sense to both Maori and non Maori audiences. In secular society, it's easy to see life as compartmentalised. We work, then play, and - if we want - attend a religious service. But things weren’t always this way. Historically, and even globally today, Indigenous peoples share an interwoven and spiritual view of life. This National Reconciliation Week, James and the panel explore Indigenous Australian theology.

In this episode, we speak with Jamie Marloo Thomas and Sara Jones, creators and facilitators of Wayapa Wuurrk. Wayapa Wuurrk is a modality that incorporates movement, meditation and a connection to the 14 elements of nature and the land. The word Wayapa means connection, and it draws from indigenous philosophy but is designed to be a practice for everyone regardless of religion or background. In this episode, we learn how Jamie's childhood experiences lead him on the path to creating Wayapa Wuurrk. We learn about the 14 elements, and how a Wayapa Wuurrk session is structured. We learn how Wayapa goes beyond self-care and encourages an attitude that goes beyond the self towards caring for the environment and looking after the planet for future generations. Finally, we learn how Jamie and Sara worked together to nurture an idea to being approved as an official modality by the International Institute of Complementary Therapies as a way to raise funds to teach Indigenous children their culture. Join KM today at 3pm EST for another live episode of ANU Asafo where she will discuss a clip from one of Chief Jegna HRU Yuya Assaan-ANU's shows. This class series is a hardcore spiritual initiation into the deeper truths of indigenous metaphysics and natural power. Jacqueline barely survived as a caregiver to my (once-adoring) elderly father and sweet but ailing mother, both with Alzheimer's which went undiagnosed for over a year. But after fighting through an unsympathetic medical system, endless tears, and depleting their life savings and much of my own, with sheer determination I figured everything out. Passion to save others (especially from getting so frustrated they commit elder abuse) compels me to educate on issues that so unnecessarily cost a year of my life—and then nearly my life itself when I survived invasive Brst. Cancer. Jeannie Kerrigan is a healer, teacher, author, and spiritual leader whose life work is to bring movement and healing to as many as she can. Having taught Quantum Healing, Ancient Wisdom Teachings, and Indigenous Spirituality to students all over the world, Jeannie's goal is to bring modern relevance to this wisdom.
Visionary entrepreneur & shamanic explorer Ross Blaine will discuss this powerful question with host Susan Larison Danz, including how one can still have a personal relationship with the Divine, along with other topics exploring New Age and shamanic teachings. Ross has studied alternative spirituality for over 20 years, including New Age thought, Native American, Meso-American & South American spirituality, shamanism, paganism and the occult. As a Master Practitioner of Energy Medicine, he has studied in Peru with Andean shamans. Susan first met Ross several years ago while participating in a group studying the teachings of shaman "nagual" don Miguel Ruiz. At the time, Susan also participated in a couple of shamanic ceremonies with Ross at a Medicine Wheel. This was all new to Susan (very soon after her leaving the evangelical church), and she continues to be curious about what she observed and experienced. We will also discuss the significance of 2012 and how Ross believes it relates to the end of the karmic cycle of reincarnation on Earth. We will discuss healing wounds from past lives, the nature of time, as well as a brief exploration of indigenous views of ETs.
