A podcast to answer all your questions about productivity, time management, self-development and goal planning. My name is Carl Pullein, and I am your host of this show. How often do you feel overwhelmed? It's a good question to ask because some of that overwhelm is caused by what has been called “open loops” or in other words stuff to do that has not been looked at to see what is involved.  A lot of this will come from your inboxes. We throw all sorts of things in there without much thought about what needs to be done. With our email and messaging inboxes, we don't have any control over what arrives in there—that's out of our control.  The issue here is we have it collected, and that's often a weight off our minds, but there's a sense of anxiety because we don't know for sure what needs to be done and how long it will take us to do it.  If we are not processing what we collected frequently and correctly, then there is a gaping hole in the system that needs filling in. If not, there will be a lot of things that need to be done that gets missed. And that then leads to a distrust in your system which creates its own set of issues.  This week's question is how to develop the right habits and processes to make sure that our inboxes are cleared and what gets into our system is clear, actionable and with realistic timelines. So, let me hand you over to the Mystery Podcast Voice, for this week's question. This week's question comes from Stephen. Stephen asks, Hi Carl, could you walk us through how to best clear a task manager's inbox as well as some “best practices” for clearing email and other inboxes? Hi Stephen, yes I can and thank you for your question.  This is a place that I feel I must tread very carefully. On the one hand I want to encourage you to stop trying to remember everything in your head and to externalise it so you reduce the stress of trying to remember everything.  On the other hand, I also want to encourage you to maintain a clean and tight task management system. By that I mean that your task manager only contains genuine things you either must or should do and anything you think you'd like to do can be put into your notes app.  Email and messaging services are reasonably straightforward.  There's a two step process. The first is to clear the inboxes. This part is about speed. The faster you can do that the better.  When processing your inboxes here you want to get into the habit of asking the questions: What is it and what do I need to do about it? An email rom a customer asking for some information about their account, for example, would give you the answers; it's an email from a customer that requires me to answer a question.  So, it's actionable and you would then send it to your Action This Day folder for action later in the day.  The temptation is to deal with it immediately. It's from a customer! I must reply immediately. I get it. I know there's a sense that anything from a customer must be dealt with instantly.  Unfortunately, doing so will create challenges for you in the long-term. The first is you set an expectation. Instantly replying to a customer means they expect you to reply instantly next time too. And next time may not be as convenient as it is now. You might be at your son's sports day, or having a romantic lunch with your partner.  It's not very romantic if you have to pause the conversation while you respond to your customer is it? The second challenge is it rarely ever is just one. It's often several emails or messages like that. Each one will likely take you five to ten minutes. Just six of those and you've eaten up forty-five minutes of your processing time. What about the six other emails you need to clear from your inbox.  This is how inboxes fill up and become overwhelming. If you have sixty to seventy emails in your inbox you should be able to clear those in around twenty to twenty-five minutes. Stopping and dealing with individual emails because you think it will only take a few minutes to deal with them lengthens the processing time, which means you won't have time to clear it.  Your customers are in the same place as you. Swamped with stuff to do with a shortage of time to do it. The chances are they're going to hate you for responding instantly. Now you've given them more work to do.  And let's get real here, if something's genuinely urgent, they're not going to email you are they? They'll call you.  The second part of this process is to set aside time each day for dealing with your actionable messages.  This is where you open up your email's Action This Day folder and begin with the oldest one and work you way down the list. It's at this point you will thank yourself for not responding to all those quick and easy emails.  If all you have in your Action This Day folder are emails that require a lot of thinking and work, it'll be a painful experience. If instead you have a wide variety of emails to deal with you build momentum and and plough through them quickly.  And that's it. A two step process. Through out the day, between sessions of work, clear your inbox by asking two simple questions: What is it, what do I need to do with it. If you need to reply, read or review something, throw it into your action this day folder.  Then later in the day, settle down and go through your Action This Day folder and clear as many as you can. As long as you are starting with the oldest first, you'll never be very far behind.  Next up is your tasks inbox.  This is a little different from your messages or email inbox because you control what's put there. Unlike emails and messages where you have no control. You cannot control who is sending messages to you.  The challenge here is to be ruthless about what gets into your system.  Throughout the day, it's easy to throw all sorts of things into this inbox. You may have heard someone recommend a book that sounded interesting, so you throw that in there. You may have seen someone with a colourful umbrella and you decide it's time for you to get yourself one.  Then there are all those ideas about redesigning your kitchen, or cleaning up your notes app or a thought about getting some Christmas cards printed with your name on them--I'm not sure if that's still a thing.  Your inbox is the gateway to your system, so it's perfectly fine to throw anything and everything in there. Where you want to be ruthless is what you allow into your system.  Processing your task manager's inbox again has a few questions. The first is: what is it? Then, what do you need to do with it?  For example, you may have realised that your passport expires in the next ten months. So you have a task in there that says “renew passport”. That's good. But is it enough. I know if I come to a task that says renew passport I'm going to ignore it. Why? Because behind that simple “renew passport” is a lot of stuff I don't know about. The last time I renewed my passport was ten years ago. The passport office will undoubtedly changed the system since then. So what's the real task here? It's to find out what I need to renew my passport.  So, I would change the task to “find out what I need to renew my passport” and then decide when I will do that. Do I need to do it this week? Next week? Or perhaps next month?  And that's the third question, when will I do it?  Once decided, I drop it into its appropriate folder.  You will often have some obvious tasks in there too. It could be something like sending a quote to a prospective customer. So you add a task “send quote to Drax Enterprises into your inbox.  Yet, is it that simple? This might be a potential big multi-million dollar contract. One you need to discuss with your boss first. So, what is the task? It's to talk with your boss about what discounts to offer. So you can change the task to “Discuss with boss Drax Enterprises quotation”, add a date you will do it—perhaps tomorrow—and place the task into your This Week folder.  The danger of not rewriting tasks with the real next step is you will ignore the task because you are unclear about what really needs to happen next. When you process your inbox, you have an opportunity to get clear about what needs to happen next.  Once you know that, you will be less likely to skip it.  I know this all sounds complex, but if you step back and look what you are doing, you are asking yourself three simple questions. What is it? What do I need to do with it? And when will I do it?  I've found that if you apply these questions every time you are in an inbox, it quickly becomes natural.  You also get better at triaging your task manager's inbox. This helps you to keep your task manager clean and tight. The less you allow in there, the more focused you will be and much less susceptible to picking the easy tasks leaving yourself with only the more time consuming ones later in the day. (Something you want to reverse—remember “Eat The Frog”) And that's it, Stephen. Keep things simple, run through the questions and be ruthless about what gets into your task management system.  Thank you for your question and thank you to you too for listening. It just remains for me no to wish you all a very very productive week.

There is a long history of regulation and deregulation where big scandals provide the catalyst for new rules, and then the realization that the rules are possibly excessive has caused them to be rolled back. In finance the 1933 Glass-Steagall provisions came in the wake of the 1929 Crash. The 2002 Sarbanes-Oxley Act was a reaction to the Enron and WorldCom scandals. Dodd-Frank was enacted in 2010 after the 2008 financial crisis. Good regulation can bring all sorts of benefits, but excessive regulation, does little to serve the public interest, and creates financial costs and frustration for businesses and the public. Elon Musk has vowed to dismantle thousands of federal regulations as the co-head of the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, saying the nation's financial security depends on it. Election Day is less than two weeks away. County boards of elections have their hands full, but adding to the workload is the high number of voter registration challenges being filed. Elections officials say the number of challenges is unprecedented. In Wood County alone, the elections board received challenges to 16,000 voter registrations. They were all filed by one person. They all must be investigated. Voting rights organizations are concerned that recently naturalized citizens will be disenfranchised from voting in Ohio either due to poll workers' confusion or because of hurdles they say Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose's office has created. Naturalized citizens are citizens of the United States and have the same right to vote. But concerned groups say the state's photo ID law, and a new form put out by LaRose, may present difficulties for them should their status be challenged. This week Attorney General Dave Yost announced indictments in illegal voting cases in the state -- a total of 6 people. More than 8 million are registered to vote in Ohio. Three people in Franklin County and one each in Cuyahoga, Summit and Portage counties are accused of voting illegally as non-citizens in past elections. The indictments amount to less than 1% of the 600 cases the secretary of state very publicly referred to the attorney general. And the person indicted in Cuyahoga County has been dead for two years. We will begin Friday's Reporters Roundtable we will talk over some of the voting issues officials are contending with as we get closer to Election Day.

Welcome back, Catholic Pilgrims. I hope that your day is starting well or ending well. Or, hey, maybe you are in the middle of your day and, if so, I hope it's going well.  Everywhere we turn, we hear about stress. People are constantly saying that they are stressed about this and stressed about that. Headlines talk about how stressed everyone is and how our society is one of the most anxious, stressed, and depressed on record.  To add to that, people tell me pretty frequently that they don't have time for anything. They are soooo busy. Swamped, in fact. When I ask what is keeping them so busy, no one can tell me clearly. They hem and haw around, but I'm never left with a clear picture of what is packing their day so tightly that they have no room to breathe.  I know people work and people take care of their kids. I, also, know that some people are in school and that keeps people pretty busy. But, overall, I think there is a bigger culprit—wasted time.  People work or go to school and then they spend hours upon hours glued to some screen. Before they know it, they look up and realize that laundry needs to be done or homework needs to be done, the kitchen needs cleaned, and the kids put to bed. Time has condensed because of all the screen time and then people feel pressured and stressed to get stuff done.  To add to this, they aren't enjoying any amusements which refresh the mind and relax the body. Screen time does neither of these.  St. Francis is going to talk to us about the importance of lawful amusements. Let's open our books to Chapter Thirty One of the Third Part.

Deadpool Killer Wade Wilson Swamped with Support as Sentencing Looms

Wade Wilson, the 30-year-old convicted murderer dubbed the “Deadpool Killer,” is receiving an unexpected wave of support from women and other backers despite his conviction for the brutal slaying of two women in 2019. Wilson, who is currently on death row, has been inundated with nearly 4,000 messages from prison, many of which include inappropriate X-rated photos. Authorities have had to reject 163 such images. As the August 27, 2024 sentencing date approaches, Wilson's supporters have flooded the chambers of Lee County Circuit Judge Nicholas R. Thompson, imploring him to spare Wilson's life. This flood of letters and pleas comes despite a jury's recommendation for the death penalty. Among Wilson's supporters is a woman from Visalia, California, who has pledged her undying devotion to the killer. “As someone who cares unconditionally for Wade, I have deeply reflected on the gravity of the situation and impact of your decision,” she wrote in a letter to the judge. Another supporter, a mother of two, argued that Wilson has changed since his incarceration. “If you look past his tattoos to his face structure since being in prison and medicated, he is healthier,” she wrote, suggesting that his current appearance is an improvement over his gaunt booking photo. However, legal experts caution that these emotional appeals are unlikely to influence the court. According to The Code of Judicial Conduct, judges are prohibited from considering communications made outside of the courtroom, ensuring that only evidence presented during the trial will impact the final decision. Wilson's case is marked by its extreme violence and depravity. On October 7, 2019, Wilson met Kristine Melton, 35, and her friend Stephanie Sailors at Buddah LIVE, a bar in Fort Myers. After closing time, Wilson accompanied Melton and Sailors to the home of Jayson Shepard, where they spent several hours. The next morning, Wilson, Melton, and Sailors went to Melton's Cape Coral home. After Sailors left, Wilson strangled Melton to death while she slept and then stole her car. Later that day, Wilson encountered Diane Ruiz, 43, walking along a Cape Coral street. He asked her for directions and lured her into his car. When Ruiz attempted to exit the vehicle, Wilson attacked her, beating and strangling her before pushing her out of the car and running over her multiple times. Wilson confessed to his crimes in graphic detail to his father, Steven Testasecca, who subsequently contacted the authorities. Wilson was arrested on October 8, 2019. During his confession, Wilson described his actions as “killing for the sake of killing,” telling police, “I came across my mind to murder, just kill, kill, kill.” Wilson was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder, grand theft, burglary of a dwelling, battery, and petit theft. Despite efforts to present himself in a more favorable light for the jury, including covering his tattoos and wearing a new suit, the jury recommended the death penalty for both murders on June 25, 2024. This recommendation came after a trial phase where jurors considered both aggravating and mitigating circumstances. In a shift from previous Florida law, which required unanimous jury recommendations for the death penalty, a new statute signed by Governor Ron DeSantis in April 2023 allows for a death sentence recommendation with as few as eight jurors voting in favor. The jury in Wilson's trial voted 9-3 and 10-2 in favor of death, making their recommendation a significant legal step toward a potential execution. Wilson's sentencing, initially scheduled for July 23, 2024, was delayed after his attorneys requested additional time due to scheduling conflicts with two court-appointed mental health experts. The sentencing has been rescheduled to August 27, 2024. Additionally, Wilson's legal team has filed a motion for a new trial or acquittal on the murder charges and other counts, though Judge Thompson has yet to rule on these motions. Sign-up for my free 20-day devotional, The Word Before Work Foundations, at http://TWBWFoundations.com--Series: Wisdom for Work from DavidDevotional: 3 of 7In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war…David remained in Jerusalem. One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, “She is Bathsheba”...Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her. (2 Samuel 11:1-4a)Many historians believe that this famous scene took place towards the middle of David's 40-year reign as king of Israel. And today's passage suggests that David was growing lax on the job. Samuel says that “In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war,” David didn't. He “remained in Jerusalem.” Then we're told that “one evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace.” The picture Samuel paints is of David being bored. He couldn't sleep (perhaps due to a lack of exhaustion from a hard day's work) and now he appears to be moseying around the palace roof aimlessly. That's the context for David's most notorious sin. Boredom. Slothfulness. A lack of hard work. David is Exhibit A, supporting the old adage that “idle hands are the devil's workshop.” This passage reminds us that one of the reasons Christians should celebrate the gift of work is that God often uses it to keep us from sinning. How should we respond to that truth? For those of us who frequently complain about being “too busy,” (hand raised) I think we should respond by giving thanks to God. Is it wrong to lament about the “thorns and thistles” that make our work “painful” (see Genesis 3)? Absolutely not! But if you're feeling swamped at work today, David's story should compel you to also praise God for using even painful things like overwhelm for your sanctification and his glory. But maybe you don't resonate with feeling “too busy.” Maybe you, like David, have started to coast through life. Or maybe you dream about spending your final years on cruise ships, beaches, and golf courses. With all due respect, there is no biblical support whatsoever for this version of “retirement.” Now, could God be calling you to trade the work you do for pay as a marketer, therapist, or general contractor for unpaid work as a mentor, tutor, or guardian ad litem? Absolutely! But to quit being productive altogether in the work of the Lord is a recipe for disaster and unfaithfulness as David so vividly demonstrates.May we be people who accurately reflect the image of God who “is always at his work to this very day” (John 5:17) and join the Apostle Paul in saying, “If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me” (Philippians 1:22).
