Long before Brooklyn was known as the world's hippest neighborhood, it was the deadliest - the seedy, dangerous underbelly of New York City, where mobsters and gangs could commit murder and dump dead bodies without getting caught. For more than a hundred years, the Red Hook section of Brooklyn was Ground Zero for organized crime. Whoever controlled the piers controlled everything. From the infamous Irish gang known as The White Hand at the turn of the century, to the notorious Italian Gallo brothers who ran President Street—and everything else—generations later, the blood-soaked history of Red Hook is the story of American crime at its most powerful, corrupt, and coldly efficient. It's all here: the brutal mob hits, bullet storms, and backstabbings of the most colorful cutthroats to ever terrorize the streets. A rogue's gallery of killers with nicknames like “The Mad Hatter,” “The Executioner,” “Wild Bill,” and “Peg Leg.” The Brooklyn bar fight that gave Al “Scarface” Capone his legendary scars. The godfather of America's first Sicilian crime family whose gruesomely mangled hand could scare men half to death. And, to bring it all home, the author's own eyewitness account of multiple shootings growing up as the son of a Mafia bodyguard.Filled with jaw-dropping stories of public violence and personal vengeance, vivid insights into the Mafia's way of life, and shocking portraits of America's most wanted crime families. Ever been to a birthday bash where the name mix-up turned the celebration into a riot of laughter? We've got that story and more, as we recall the comical error at Kody West's shindig, where my blunder took the cake. Beyond the chuckles, we venture into the resonance of a recent concert that hit all the right notes in our small town. We muse over the magic of live music, the unexpected calm in a crowd, and the law enforcement's stealthy oversight. Plus, we share a slice of our own musical escapades, ranging from ear-splitting performances to run-ins with iconic artists. The frosty fingertips of the current season have us discussing the tempting thought of skipping work and the flaky reliability of our local weatherman. We navigate through the latest sports highlights, including the Chiefs' icy victory and Texas' twin defeats, leaving us to ponder the high-stakes game of coaching careers and the breathless pace of college sports. Football aficionados, brace yourselves for a robust debate on underdog teams, Dallas' fortunes, and the Chiefs' chilly showdowns. The quarterback carousel spins with personal takes on loyalty and legacy as we tackle the hot-button topic of players like Aaron Rodgers switching allegiances. As our conversation takes a more introspective turn, we confront the delicate signs of dementia and the complexities of public figures battling hidden struggles. We delve into the political fray, dissecting administration policies, the prickly thorns of inflation, and the ever-fluctuating gas prices. Circling back to the heart of our communities, we examine the economic pulse of towns like Fort Scott, school funding intricacies, and the vitality of community engagement. And because everyone loves a good gripe, we air out our Pet Peeve of the Week before revisiting the euphoric highs and lows of concert-going experiences and crowd dynamics. Wrapping it up, we toss around the idea of a special guest appearance that's sure to keep you on your toes for our next episode.

Finally, they preview baseball, talk about the Orange and Blue Debut, and opine on NIL and asking boosters for millions of dollars every season.
It is now 1648. In this episode, two tough guys, Johan "Big Belly" Printz of New Sweden and Peter "Peg Leg" Stuyvesant of New Netherland, escalate their competition to control the critical Delaware River, now an essential artery for the fur trade coming out of Susquehannock territory in Pennsylvania and points farther west. Sweden and Netherland were at peace in Europe, so there would be no shooting, but all sorts of guns would be pointed without pulling the trigger or lighting the match. Eventually, the Dutch would put together the largest European army in North America since Soto and Coronado in the 1540s, and put an end to New Sweden as a political entity, raising the Dutch flag over the forts at today's New Castle and Wilmington, Delaware. Along the way we hear the horrific story of the Katten, a Swedish ship full of settlers that ran aground just off Puerto Rico. Everybody survived the immediate crisis, only to fall into the hands of the Spanish and then the French on St. Croix. Folks, don't let that happen to you. This show has allowed us to have some pretty cool opportunities. This episode is definitely one of those. We are joined by Carey Bringle (instagram.com/careybringle) and Chef Nick Pfannerstill (instagram.com/chefpfanny). Mother's Ruin won our best Nashville wing bracket with Peg Leg Porker coming in second. They decided to come together to sell mixed wing baskets with proceeds going the Caring for Covenant Fund, and we had a live event with them. This is that event. Tennessee Cobbler Company (instagram.com/tncobblerco) also joined in to help out. This city of ours can be pretty special sometimes. Ya'll take care.

Carey Bringle Joins the show for the 4th time! In this episode, we wanted to discuss the new football stadium, and we did, but that opened the door to so many other conversations. We talked about his first location, and how he lost it. We talked about local politics, and the 40 person City Council, and why it needs to be reduced. Carey is the epidemy of locally owned and operated, and he talks about why that's important, and what you can do to make that happen for yourself. This was a fun conversation, and we heard Carey tell stories we have never heard before, we hope you enjoy this conversation. The Bangkok Podcast | Conversations on Life in Thailand's Buzzing Capital
Greg interviews Bangkok-based lawyer Dave Lawrence about the ins and outs of foreigners owning land in Thailand. Dave begins with his backstory: he went to law school in Ohio where he met his future wife while she was getting a master's degree (also in law), and upon graduating they returned to Thailand for what was expected to be two years. That has now turned into 12 years, and in the meantime Dave has worked several different legal jobs at law firms as well as private companies. Dave then explains his current venture: Pegleg, a company that matches foreigners in Thailand with Thai lawyers and law firms. Dave then introduces us to the basics of foreigners owning property in Thailand. As for condos, it's possible as long as less than 50% of the ‘saleable land' in the building is owned by foreigners. However, in general, owning real property (actual land) is forbidden to foreigners - but there are some well-known (but questionably legal) workarounds. Some foreigners start a company with majority Thai ownership and then have the company purchase the land. Dave points out that this is a risky maneuver and potentially illegal if the Thai owners are just ‘nominees' instead of true owners. Next, the guys discuss the recent (and recurring) talk of amending the law to allow foreign ownership in some cases. Dave argues that such efforts are usually met with skepticism in the legal community because of their history of being met with xenophobic opposition, i.e. fear of foreigners ‘buying up the country.' The two discuss the pros and cons of foreign ownership and whether they think it will ever come to pass for real. As for now, if you are a foreigner and want to own your home in Thailand, it's condos or trusting your Thai spouse.:) Don't forget that Patrons get the ad-free version of the show as well as swag and other perks. After taking a week off from the pod because Mike was "dead tired," your favorite casters return to exchange gifts of urban planning. Now more than ever, it's Gift Horse.
First we learn more about Tracy's pirate persona, including his unlikely name. Then, surfs up beaches! It's time to become a very specific kind of guy—one whose tattoo matches his hobby.
Bible Reading: Exodus 20:7; Philippians 2:5-11Peggy sat on the porch step as tears trickled down her cheeks. "What's the matter, honey?" Mom asked as she sat down beside her."The Holden brothers started calling me names again. I was just walking past their house on my way to Jamie's and they started saying, 'There goes Miss Piggy.' They always make fun of my name when they see me. I'm Miss Piggy or Piggy Peggy or Peg Leg the Pirate to them.""I know that must hurt a lot," said Mom. "You know your name is extra special because you were named after your grandmother Peggy. She was such a kind, godly woman, and every time I say your name, it reminds me of her. It's sad those boys want to make fun of such a beautiful name."Peggy sniffled. "Sometimes I wish I had a different name." "Our names are important to us," Mom agreed. "When people make fun of our name or use it in a rude way, it can make us feel angry and upset. God knows how you feel, Peggy.""He does?" said Peggy.Mom nodded. "People use His name in disrespectful ways all the time. When they use the name of God or Jesus in a flippant way when they're surprised or upset, they aren't showing the proper honor His name deserves.""What's flippant?" asked Peggy."Flippant means not showing a respectful attitude. One of the Ten Commandments says, 'You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.' And then in the New Testament, Paul reminds us that one day, everyone will bow at the name of Jesus because His name is above all other names.""I guess God does understand how I feel when the boys make fun of my name. I really don't want to change my name. I just want them to stop making fun of it.""I do too," said Mom. "I think I'd better give Mrs. Holden a call. But remember, your name is special no matter what people say, and you have another name that's even more special.""I do?" asked Peggy. "What name is that?" "Christian," said Mom. "It's a name that means you belong to Jesus and have His goodness and love in your heart. When you show His love to others--even when they're mean to you--you're honoring His name." -Kendra AngleHow About You?Have you heard God's name used in a way that was disrespectful? Maybe you've even used it that way yourself. The Bible is very clear that God and His name deserve our respect. After He died and rose again to save us, Jesus was given the highest place of honor, and one day every person on earth will bow at His name. Respect His name when you speak it and also in the way you live as a Christian. Today's Key Verse:Therefore God exalted him [Jesus] to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name. (NIV) (Philippians 2:9)Today's Key Thought:Honor God's name

There's no getting around it. Smoke is in Carey Bringle's veins. He grew up in Tennessee and developed a love of barbecue at a young age, and he still remembers family gatherings at iconic places like Bozo's Hot Pit Bar B-Q and Lewis' Store. At 17, he lost a leg to cancer, but recovered from the disease, and after success for years on the competition BBQ circuit, celebrated his second chance at life by naming his restaurant Peg Leg Porker when it opened in Nashville in 2013. His Peg Leg Porker sauces and rubs, another restaurant, a new line of professional-grade home smokers, and Peg Leg Porker Tennessee Straight Bourbon Whiskies have expanded the bbq into a full-fledged brand, but Carey has not lost sight of building community over a great plate of barbecue cooked low and slow in the heart of Nashville, TN.
