Some of you may have wondered what happened to the “In Conversation” talk show. And some of you, who read and hear our news on LPM or WFPL already know. In August, our host, colleague and friend Rick Howlett passed away from cancer. Senior producer Laura Ellis who worked with Rick for years, including on the “In Conversation” team, wrote a lovely tribute about him. Since Rick was co-creator of “In Conversation,” and its only host since it launched in January 2019, we are left with a Rick-sized hole. But he also leaves us inspired to carry on with programming that reflects his passion for examining the news, encouraging community engagement, and contributing to public discourse in a way that makes us better together. In the spirit of sharing the kind of work you value as an “In Conversation” listener, here is the documentary “Dirty Business,” from the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting. Our journalists uncover the true cost of cleaning up after the eastern Kentucky floods, including how unfinished work can set up more problems the next time there's extreme weather.
Journalists from around the state discuss the news of the week with host Bill Bryant, including the possibility of a Teamsters strike at UPS and more speaker confirmations for the Fancy Farm picnic and political event in August. Guests: Jess Clark, WFPL in Louisville; Bill Estep, Lexington Herald-Leader; and Chris Otts, WDRB in Louisville.
On this week's Sustainability Now!, your host, Justin Mog, continues an exciting summer series of interviews with local women/fem artists who are all engaged in some form of struggle for social justice and are all featured in an exciting new exhibit called “We Don't Wither,” on display at the Muhammad Ali Center April 1 - December 18, 2023. Created to engage our community, We Don't Wither examines the intersection of art and activism. The artists featured in this exhibit have created art or chosen from their art, pieces that respond to current socio-cultural and socio-political situations, lived experiences, and related current events—to see our world and our community through their unique perspectives. It is our objective to celebrate the often unheard experiences, opinions, feelings, and perspectives from those who work, create, and fight in our city; to share their artwork and views with our visitors; and to provide a space for conversation and reflection. This exhibit is included in the regular price of admission, but you can see the exhibit for free and meet the artists themselves during any of the upcoming ARTIST SHOWCASES: Marlesha Woods June 24 Shauntrice Martin July 29 LaNia Roberts August 12 Joanne Weis August 26 Morgan McGill September 30 Nikki Douglas October 28 Learn more at: https://alicenter.org/muhammad-ali-center-announces-new-temporary-exhibit-featuring-louisville-area-artists/ This week, we interview Shauntrice Martin who is a mother, abolitionist, and artist. Her work explores longing, identity, and struggle through mixed media. She was born and raised in Louisville and currently serves as a lobbyist. Her artwork has reflected a tumultuous yet triumphant trajectory. The use of acrylics, textile, sculpture, and photography blend in her pieces to create sometimes haunting images of the lives Black and Indigenous people could have lived if white supremacy never existed. She created Chahta Noir as a resource & outlet for artists to develop, network, and BE. Shauntrice is a Black/Choctaw contemporary artist & curator. She was the inaugural Speed Art Museum Artist-In-Residence and Louisville Visual Art (LVA) Curatorial Fellow. Shauntrice's museum solo exhibition "Something in the Water" was featured at the Speed Art Museum 2021-22. Most recently, she curated a permanent exhibit entitled "Sweet Fire" with Play Cousins Collective in the Historic Lyles Mall. Shauntrice's "Gateway" Collection will debut at the Muhammad Ali Center in April 2023. Tonight, we host our very special guest: Stephen Tobolowsky! Stephen Tobolowsky is one of the leading character actors today. He has appeared in over 200 movies and television shows. He has played everything from Ned Ryerson in Groundhog Day to Sandy Ryerson in Glee. He has appeared almost naked as Stu Beggs on Californication and has worn the same suit for seven years as Principal Earl Ball on The Goldbergs. Stephen currently appears as Dr. Leslie Berkowitz in the new generation remake of Norman Lear's One Day at a Time. Seasons 1-3, at present, are still available on Netflix. PopTV and CBS aired Season 4. Stephen has always been a storyteller. In sixth grade, he won his school's storytelling contest and over that summer won the award as best storyteller in the City of Dallas (13 years old and under division.) That impulse led him into writing. He wrote the screenplay for True Stories with David Byrne and Beth Henley. He wrote and performed his storytelling films Stephen Tobolowsky's Birthday Party and The Primary Instinct. His labor of love has been The Tobolowsky Files, created with producer David Chen. What began as a behind-the-scenes movie podcast has become a sometimes funny, sometimes compelling portrait of a human life - as described by Miles McNutt here. The Tobolowsky Files is available at tobolowskyfiles.com and on Apple Podcasts. Early episodes were also previously broadcast on KUOW 94.9 in Seattle, on WFPL in Louisville, KY and many stations through Public Radio International (PRI). He has two books of stories published by Simon & Schuster: The Dangerous Animals Club and My Adventures with God. But low-income workers have seen some of the largest percent increases in pay since the pandemic. But how long will those reported gains last? How do we fix a system that asks millions to work hard, but doesn't earn them enough to live on?We partnered with WFPL in Louisville, Kentucky and talk to small business owners, consumers and workers impacted by inflation. This conversation is part of our Remaking America collaboration with six public radio stations around the country. Remaking America is funded in part by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.Want to support 1A? Give to your local public radio station and subscribe to this podcast. Have questions?
