The toughest World Champs ever?! The boys break down all the drama from an unforgettable World Championships in Rwanda. Did the chasers blow their tactics? Who were the unsung heroes of the race? And what exactly happens to the European jersey when Pogacar takes that as well? They also dig into Remco's mechanical woes, Ben Healy's brilliant 2025 season, and G gives us some insight into how his running career is shaping up
The 2025 UCI World Road Cycling Championships in Kigali, Rwanda, delivered plenty of drama and debate, and SOS host Mike Finch was there to witness the action first-hand and ask if this was the best championships of the century. We also have the post-race interviews with the big stars and discuss whether Remco Evenepoel can really upset the two-time World Champion Tadej Pogacar at the upcoming European championships on October 5 and the season-ending Il Lombardia a week later.***Join Discourse and contribute to the Spotlight, and join the conversation - a small monthly donation gets you membership to our community, and that allows you to drive discussion around these shows, and get even more value and insight from what other listeners are sharing. Will lower gearing make for safer racing? The UCI thinks so, but it could also make all of SRAM's 1X drivetrains verboten at the highest level of competition without affecting Shimano or Campagnolo. SRAM disagrees, obviously, and has begun legal action in Europe, citing reputational damage and EU competition laws. And as you'd expect, the UCI responded yet again. That and more on this week's episode of Velo Podcast. Velo Tech Editor Josh Ross and host Mike Levy dig into the details of the UCI's potential 10.46-meter rollout rule and why SRAM's 10-tooth cog doesn't comply, safer courses versus lower gearing, and the UCI's near silence when it comes to so many issues. We also discuss the UCI president's social media post congratulating Tadej Pogacar on his TT World Champs victory in Rwanda, despite Remco being the actual victor, and we look at Alvin's first impressions of Factor's new Aluto gravel bike.
The inaugural UCI road World Championships on the continent of Africa take place in Rwanda this week. The first few days of racing threw up one major surprise, the next few could yield more - and Daniel Friebe, Lionel Birnie & Brian Nygaard are on review & preview duty here. Remco Evenepoel‘s trouncing of Tadej Pogačar in the men‘s TT last Sunday confounded some tipsters but not the form book in that discipline. It‘ll be Pogačar, not Remco, defending his world title on Sunday - but did the former‘s performance on Sunday suggest his road race crown is there for the taking? We discuss this, hear from one Slovenian on the ground in Kigali and ponder the curious, in fact downright mysterious case of Nauru‘s single entrant on the provisional startlist. The Vuelta is over and the world champs is well underway, which means we're nearly at the end of the 2025 racing season! It's really crept up on me, I can't believe it! On one hand, it feels like it's flown by, but on the other - the Spring Classics feel like forever ago. This month's communique focuses on the World Champs over in Rwanda. It is an absolutely brutal course this year; almost 270kms with over 5000m of climbing. Whoever wins this is going to be a thoroughly deserving winner. Remco's already got himself a rainbow jersey in the TT; can he double up with another road race title? What about Pog? He looked pretty knackered in the TT at the world champs, didn't he? Still cooked from the Tour or just reaching the end of his rope? I can't quite believe I'm saying this, but there's a big question mark over him ahead of the road race! But just watch him make me look like a cock knob and win by 9 minutes solo now. There's some strong looking underdogs in the mix too; Del Toro, Healy, Carapaz, McNulty, Pidcock, and loads of other in form hitters that could spring a surprise and overcome the two main favourites. We discuss all the favourites as well as make our predictions. In this month's PeloChat, Turbo Durbo gives us some insight into the end of a pros season - limping or striving through the last few races. Usually, a rider gets their provisional calendar at the start of the year, and it runs through to the Vuelta. After that, it's a case of “we'll see”. There's still races to go, but so many riders are sick, injured, or just cooked - so pulling together a decent squad to knock out the last few races of the year becomes a tricky task. Riders have to be adaptable throughout the whole season. Southam's talking tactics dives into UAE's record breaking season - the most wins in 1 season by any team ever. How have they managed this? How does the team manage so many world class riders? How have they won so much but still lost the Giro on the last day, and seemingly piss the Vuelta away by hunting stages? Tom shares his take on UAE's questionable tactics at points throughout the year that still haven't stopped them winning almost everything. The quiz this month is all about the world's TT. I'm quiz master, and the boys go head to head. Brace yourselves, I'm thinking next month's season finale is going to be a bumper CommuniQuiz edition. Guys, I hope you like listening to this month's communique as much as I love recording it. Sitting down and spinning a yarn about bike racing with some mates - does it get any better? Cheers Mitch The Race Communiqué is brought to you by TrainingPeaks! Track, plan, and train smarter - just like the pros. Get 20% off TrainingPeaks Premium now at trainingpeaks.com/litp I'll be heading to Adelaide this January for the Santos Tour Down Under - chasing the racing, riding the bunches in the morning, and soaking up all the summer vibes the city has to offer. Hope to see you there.
The cycling world has descended on Rwanda the 2025 World Championships - and it's already been a lot of fun. We've seen a huge ride from Remco to secure his third straight time trial title, young Welsh star Zoe Backstedt was equally dominant in the women's U23 time trial, and now there's the incredible road races to look forward to. Who's gonna take the rainbow jersey this year? G and Luke give their thoughts. Basically... can anyone beat Pog? It's gonna be a lot of fun finding out. Want to try NordVPN? In this discussion, I sit down with data veterans Remco Broekmans and Marco Wobben to explore why so many data projects fail. They argue that the problem isn't the technology, but a fundamental misunderstanding of communication, culture, and long-term strategy. The conversation goes deep into the critical shift from being a "hardcore techie" to focusing on translating business needs into data models. They use the classic "involved party" data modeling pattern as a prime example of how abstract IT jargon creates a massive disconnect with the business.Marco shares a fascinating (and surprising) case study of the Dutch Railroad organization, which has been engaged in an 18-year information modeling "program" - not a project - to manage its immense complexity. This sparks a deep dive into the cultural and work-ethic differences between the US and Europe, contrasting the American short-term, ROI-driven "project" mindset with the European capacity for long-term, foundational "programs".Finally, they tackle the role of AI. Is it a silver bullet or just the latest shiny object? They conclude that AI's best use is as an "intern" or "assistant", a tool to brainstorm, ask questions, and handle initial prototyping, but never as a replacement for the deep, human-centric work of understanding a business.Timestamps:00:00 - Introduction01:09 - Marco Wobben introduces his 25-year journey in information modeling.01:56 - Remco Broekmans reintroduces himself and his focus on the communication aspect of data.03:22 - The progression from hardcore techie to focusing on communication over technology.08:16 - Why is communication in data and IT projects so difficult? 09:49 - The "Involved Party" Problem: A perfect example of where IT communication goes wrong with the business.13:35 - The essence of IT is automating the communication that happens on the business side.18:39 - Discussing a client with 20,000 distinct business terms in their information model.21:55 - The story of the Dutch Railroad's 18-year information modeling program that reduced incident response from 4 hours to 2 seconds.27:25 - Project vs. Program: A key mindset difference between the US and Europe.34:18 - The danger of chasing shiny new tools like AI without getting the fundamentals right first.39:55 - Where does AI fit into the world of data modeling? 43:34 - Why you can't trust AI to be the expert, especially with specialized business jargon.47:18 - The role of risk in trusting AI, using a self-driving car analogy.53:27 - Cultural differences in work pressure and ethics between the US and the Netherlands.59:29 - Why personality and communication skills are more important than a PhD for data modelers.01:03:38 - What is the purpose of an AI-run company with no human benefit? 01:11:21 - Using AI as an instructive tool to improve your own skills, not just to get an answer.01:14:12 - How AI can be used as a "sidekick" to ask dumb questions and help you think.01:18:00 - Where to find Marco and Remco online

Just because the Tour de France is over, doesn't mean the party's over! I'm back with Tom Southam and Luke Durbridge for this month's Race Communique. Tom and Luke have just got back from a puncture-filled Hamburg Classic, and the Vuelta a España is about to kick off! I love the Vuelta - it's the Grand Tour I raced the most in my career, and I've got to say it's my favourite. Southam and Durbo disagree, so we kick off by having a three-way head-to-head: Giro VS Tour VS Vuelta. Which is best, and why? I made my case for the Vuelta, the hardest Grand Tour by a long way…as far as I'm concerned. Luke reckons the Tour is the best because, well, because it's the Tour. The Giro's case was made by Southam, who just loves the drama - he's obviously never watched the Vuelta! In this month's PeloChat, Durbo goes through this year's transfers and gives us his take on who's going where, why they're moving, and what it might mean for the sport. Remco to Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe is the biggest move of the year, and the young Belgian superstar has definitely raised some eyebrows by moving. Will he clash with Roglič? Will they be able to support him to win the Tour de France? Only time will tell. Luke's teammates Dylan Groenewegen and Elmar Reinders are stepping down to TDT Unibet - a second division ProTeam! An interesting move in an effort to get the young Dutch squad to the Tour de France in the next few years. He's also got some insight into Tom Pidcock's Q36.5's squad and their signings; some big riders heading that way too. Lots of moves, but Durbo's across it. Southam's diving into the modern breakaway in this month's Talking Tactics. Things have changed a hell of a lot over the last few years in the breakaway; we don't see 20-minute time gaps any more, and the breaks are kept on a much tighter leash. As the level gets higher and higher, the quality of the lower division teams is getting better and better, and smaller riders are more of a threat in the breakaways these days. It's great, and I love the exciting racing where the breaks actually have a chance, but shit, it looks so hard. Of course, we wind up with the Communiquiz. Tom's quiz master this week, and it's about Summer Classics. You'll have to listen to the episode to hear how this goes, but let's just say…I had a bit of a shocker. Guys, I hope you like this episode. I love catching up with Durbo and Southam, especially when they're in the midst of the racing season; bringing you this insight is what it's all about. Cheers, Mitch The Race Communiqué is brought to you by TrainingPeaks! Track, plan, and train smarter - just like the pros. In this podcast episode, host Michelle Frechette interviews Remco Nieuwenhuis, a WordPress professional from the Netherlands and founder of WPSupporters and WPoptic. Remco shares his journey from military and police service to tech entrepreneurship, discusses the creation of WP Optic—a fast, accurate browser extension for detecting WordPress themes and plugins—and demonstrates its features live. The conversation covers challenges, future plans, and community involvement, ending with the host encouraging listeners to try WP Optic and announcing a brief podcast break for WordCamp US.Top Takeaways:WPoptic is a fast, WordPress-focused browser extension: Remco Nieuwenhuizen developed WPoptic to quickly detect if a site is built with WordPress, along with its themes and plugins. Unlike broader tools like BuiltWith or Wappalyzer, WPoptic focuses specifically on WordPress and boasts near-instant detection speeds, currently identifying around 17,000 plugins with plans to expand to over 50,000.Development involved overcoming early challenges: The first version of WPoptic was built by an overseas developer but lacked scalability, security, and depth in plugin detection. After receiving feedback from a competitor-turned-collaborator, Remco decided to rebuild the tool from scratch, prioritizing speed, security, and accuracy. This pivot confirmed market demand and improved the product's professional quality.Growth and monetization plans center on data and community: WPoptic has around 800 Chrome users and aims to monetize through features like an export function, AI-assisted plugin detection, and potentially dashboards for plugin developers to track installations and competition. Remco emphasizes organic growth, user feedback, and avoiding heavy reliance on advertising, preferring to fund development through his other business, WPSupporters.Mentioned In The Show:WPopticWaveBuilt WithWPSupportersWappalyzerWPfounders article about Remco NieuwenhuizenElementorWPBakeryDivi

The week's news has been dominated by the confirmation that Remco Evenepoel will leave Soudal-Quick Step before the end of his contract, transferring to the Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe squad at the end of the year. Mike Levy and Pete Cossins return to unpack a wild stretch of Tour de France action from stages 14 to 16, plus all the bizarre, brilliant, and brutal stories behind the racing. Jonas Vingegaard has said many times that he's not at the Tour to race for second, and that's exactly what it looked like as he attacked Pogacar again and again on the slope of Mount Ventoux. Peter Cossins and Mike Levy are back to discuss stages 14, 15, and 16, where we saw the new version of Vingegaard, Mattias Skjelmose's nightmare front-flip over a road sign, and Quinn Simmons taking issue with possible motorbike interference. Julian Alaphilippe is also in the headlines for a wild day that started with a dislocated shoulder and ended with what he thought was a sprint victory over Wout van Aert... But that's not how it worked out, even if everyone would love a Loulou win. The duo also discusses a gutsy solo ride by Thymen Arensman and Tim Wellens' surprise win as Belgian national champion. Michael Woods offered an honest look at the brutal reality of Tour rest days, and the guys break down weird moments: puke, poop, KOM crashes, and rogue socks. Heading into the final week, UAE looks dominant with five stage wins, and the yellow jersey looks more secure than ever. But can Jonas pull off a miracle in the Alps? The French boys were so brave today. Caley, Ronan and Jonny bring you the latest from stage 2 of the Tour de France, where Mathieu van der Poel soared to the stage win and was handed the yellow jersey by Alpecin-Deceuninck teammate Jasper Philipsen. Elsewhere, we've got the latest on Remco Evenepoel heading to the exit door at Soudal-Quick Step, and likely off to Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe.
