Every photographer dreams of publishing a book of their photographs. But what exactly does that entail? In today's show, we're going to peek behind the scenes of this complex and daunting process in a chat with two complementary figures who've spent their respective careers helping to redefine what a photo book can be. Starting with three basic questions—Why a book? Why now? And what is the role of a book in your career at this time?—our discussion expands to cover a broad range of concerns. From distinguishing between the many different publishing models available today, to insights on sponsorship and publishing contracts, to tips about marketing and getting people onboard with your project, you'll come away with inventive strategies for publishing your work in book form. We've envisioned this show as an impromptu master class, so get ready to take some notes! Guests: Mary Virginia Swanson & Rick Smolan Episode Timeline: 4:45: Mary Virginia Swanson's basic advice to photographers interested in publishing their photographs in book form, plus the different publishing models available today. 10:22: Rick's start as a freelance photographer and the story behind his shift in roles to launch the Day in the Life book series. 15:04: The importance of sponsorship or in-kind donations, plus innovative strategies for negotiating such deals. 23:04: The two different categories of photo books: greatest hits with the photographer as subject and a book that has a separate subject and overarching story. 27:55: Tips for going on press, advice about publishing contracts, and suggestions for buying back a book before it gets remaindered. 34:54: The issue of vanity presses, and the matter of requiring a subvention from authors to help cover the publisher's costs. 43:03: Publicity and marketing: You are the best salesperson for your book. Tips for getting your book seen and heard about, from magazines to podcasts. 49:08: Episode Break 50:02: Should you create a full mock-up version of a book or just show a publisher a selection of photos? 59:22: Benefits to working with a literary agent when seeking to publish a photo book. 1:01:44: Slicing up the pie by hiring freelaners or finding a partner to share in the work. 1:07:38: The importance of publishing deadlines and many important markers tied to a calendar, plus the cover photo and book blurbs. 1:14:22: Swanson and Smolan on their picks for memorable photo books. 1:25:19: Parting advice about getting other people excited about your project. Guest Bios: Mary Virginia Swanson has spent her career helping artists find the strengths in their work, identify receptive audiences, and present their personal vision in an informed, professional manner. Her broad background as a photo educator, author, entrepreneur and advisor spans areas of exhibiting, collecting, licensing, and marketing photographs. A few career highlights include working with Ansel Adams to manage education offerings at the Friends of Photography in California, heading Special Projects for Magnum Photos in New York, and founding and directing Swanstock as a unique licensing agency for fine art photographers. Swanson is the recipient of many awards, including the Society for Photographic Education's Honored Educator Award and the FOCUS Award for Lifetime Achievement in Photography from the Griffin Museum in Boston to name just two. In 2011, Swanson co-authored Publish Your Photography Book with Darius Himes, which is now in its third edition. Currently, Swanson works independently from her home base in Tucson, offering classes, workshops and consulting services to artists and arts organizations, serving as an advisor for multiple nonprofits, and giving back through other community-minded activities. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has expressed regret at the United States sanction of four judges of the court. Donald Trump's administration imposed sanctions on the four judges in retaliation for the war tribunal's issuance of an arrest warrant for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant, and a past decision to open a case into alleged war crimes by US troops in Afghanistan. The ICC says this decision is a clear attempt to undermine the independence of an international judicial institution which operates under the mandate from 125 States Parties from all corners of the globe.. To unpack this, Bongiwe Zwane spoke to Ottilia Maunganidze , the Head of Special Projects at the Institute for Security Studies

One of the huge historical detriments is how our city government elects to solve problems and budget deficits via the constant presence of taxes!! We already have larger sales tax than any other city or county in the state; as well as The Soda Tax and Philadelphia Wage Tax issued to all employees. The BIRT (Business Income Receipts Tax) was introduced in 2018 as an additional tax measure to all businesses and is essentially a double tax on all business related revenue. Because of the presence of this tax and the city being unwilling to offer huge companies any significant abatements from it, the city has constantly missed out on other tax related revenue and economic impacts these companies would offer by headquartering in Philadelphia. Today I am joined by two people who are both familiar with the BIRT Tax and are working to help abolish it or lessen its impact by assuring the $100,000 income threshold stays in place. These people are Founder/President/CEO of Empower Construction, William Bowie and Director of Special Projects for Councilman Isaiah Thomas Office, Preston Tilghman. Today they help navigate and simplify this complex topic by getting to the crux of the issue and encouraging all independent contractors and business owners to make their presence felt to all relevant city officials on this important matter.

OSF HealthCare is implementing a new regional model to better serve patients across multiple local medical centers. Vice presidents will now be stationed at each facility to ensure a strong leadership presence and foster community relationships. The aim is to offer more medical services at centers like OSF Saint Luke while reserving specialized treatments for facilities such as OSF Saint Mary. This approach is designed to ease congestion at larger hospitals like OSF Saint Francis. Patients are encouraged to seek initial care at local centers, where staff will assess if transport is needed for advanced treatment elsewhere. Kory Tinkham oversees this initiative across multiple sites but is predominantly stationed in Kewanee. Kory Tinkham is the Vice President of Operations and Special Projects at OSF HealthCare Saint Luke Medical Center in Kewanee, OSF HealthCare St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg, and OSF HealthCare Holy Family Medical Center in Monmouth.

Maureen Conway, Executive Director of the Economic Opportunities Program, recently sat down with two Shared Success grantees—Jataune Hall, Director of Special Projects and Partnerships at Micro Enterprise Services of Oregon, and Lamont Jackson, Director of Technical Assistance, Black Business Investment Fund—to learn more about the challenges of and opportunities for small business childcare providers. He was the creator of the site's now‐annual “Best and Worst U.S. Airlines” special report, as well as personally authoring its first and second yearly editions, both of which drew attention from hundreds of media outlets across the country.Following his time at The Points Guy, Kheel became a Senior Editor at CNN covering both travel and finance topics, and launched the company's first e‐commerce division focused on travel rewards. Battling through the global stoppage in travel from the pandemic, he grew the small section from its infancy to over seven figures of annual revenue in only three years. In 2023, Kheel left CNN to become the founder and CEO of Points Path, a company that helps people utilize their travel rewards. The company's browser extension not only shows travelers the cost in points and miles of every flight directly in Google Flights, but also indicates whether using points or miles for each flight is the better deal. In just 8 months, Points Path has grown to over 40,000 users, and has been lauded by numerous travel publications.Kheel has appeared regularly as an analyst to discuss finance, travel and loyalty programs on national television segments for CNN, Bloomberg News, CNBC's “Squawk Box,” Yahoo Finance and Cheddar TV, as well as on ABC and CBS Radio. He has been quoted in The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, the Chicago Tribune, and many other print and web outlets on travel-related topics. He has also worked as a consultant for the “Big 3” US airlines, advising them on their frequent flyer programs.Originally from New York and South Florida, Kheel is a graduate of Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Public Communications with a bachelor's degree in television, radio and film production. His hobbies include managing his ever‐changing personal inventory of 25+ credit cards while maintaining a credit score of over 800.summaryIn this episode of the Big World Made Small podcast, host Jason Elkins interviews Julian Kheel, founder and CEO of Points Path. Julian shares his unique journey from being a reluctant traveler to becoming an expert in travel rewards and frequent flyer miles. He discusses his experience working with WWE, the importance of understanding travel points, and how Points Path simplifies the process of finding the best flight deals. The conversation also covers tips for maximizing travel rewards, the value of credit cards, and the future of Points Path.takeawaysJulian Kheel initially disliked travel but overcame his discomfort through frequent flying for work.Points Path is a browser extension that helps users find the best flight deals using points or cash.Frequent flyer programs are more valuable than airlines themselves, especially post-pandemic.S Learn more about Big World Made Small Adventure Travel Marketing and join our private community to get episode updates, special access to our guests, and exclusive adventure travel offers on our website.

Recorded during ThreatLocker Zero Trust World 2025 in Orlando, this episode of the On Location series features an engaging conversation with Alex Benton, Special Projects at ThreatLocker. Benton shares insights from his Metasploit lab, a beginner-friendly session that demonstrates the power of tools like Metasploit and Nmap in cybersecurity. The lab's objective is clear: to illustrate how easily unpatched systems can be exploited and reinforce the critical need for consistent patch management.Understanding the Metasploit LabBenton explains how participants in the lab learned to execute a hack manually before leveraging Metasploit's streamlined capabilities. The manual process involves identifying vulnerable machines, gathering IP addresses, examining open ports, and assessing software vulnerabilities. With Metasploit, these steps become as simple as selecting an exploit and running it, underscoring the tool's efficiency.A key demonstration in the lab involved Eternal Blue, the exploit associated with the WannaCry virus in 2017. Benton emphasizes how Metasploit simplifies this complex attack, highlighting the importance of maintaining patched systems to prevent similar vulnerabilities. The Real-World Implications of Unpatched SystemsThe discussion dives into the risks posed by cybercriminals who use tools like Metasploit to automate attacks. Benton points out that malicious actors often analyze patch notes to identify potential vulnerabilities and create scripts to exploit unpatched systems quickly. The conversation touches on the dark web's role in providing detailed information about exposed systems, making it even easier for attackers to target vulnerable machines.Lessons from WannaCryThe episode revisits the WannaCry incident, where a vulnerability in Windows systems led to a global cybersecurity crisis. Benton recounts how outdated systems and the absence of a strong security culture created an environment ripe for exploitation. He also shares the story of cybersecurity researchers, including Marcus Hutchins, who played pivotal roles in mitigating the virus's impact by identifying and activating its kill switch.Tune in to Learn MoreThis episode offers valuable insights into cybersecurity practices, the dangers of unpatched environments, and the tools that both ethical hackers and cybercriminals use. Listen in to gain a deeper understanding of how to secure your systems and why proactive security measures are more crucial than ever.Guest: Alex Benton, Special Projects at ThreatLocker | On LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alex-benton-b805065/Hosts:Sean Martin, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine [@ITSPmagazine] and Host of Redefining CyberSecurity Podcast [@RedefiningCyber] | On ITSPmagazine: https://www.itspmagazine.com/sean-martinMarco Ciappelli, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine [@ITSPmagazine] and Host of Redefining Society Podcast & Audio Signals Podcast | On ITSPmagazine: https://www.itspmagazine.com/itspmagazine-podcast-radio-hosts/marco-ciappelli____________________________This Episode's SponsorsThreatLocker: https://itspm.ag/threatlocker-r974____________________________ResourcesLearn more and catch more stories from ZTW 2025 coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/zero-trust-world-2025-cybersecurity-and-zero-trust-event-coverage-orlando-floridaRegister for Zero Trust World 2025: https://itspm.ag/threat5mu1____________________________Catch all of our event coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/technology-and-cybersecurity-conference-coverageTo see and hear more Redefining CyberSecurity content on ITSPmagazine, visit: https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-cybersecurity-podcastTo see and hear more Redefining Society stories on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-society-podcastWant to tell your Brand Story Briefing as part of our event coverage?
