A TIME CAPSULE: Opening the Capsule at the Los Angeles Central Library after 100 years | Todd Lerew

The City of Los Angeles began to build a magnificent architectural beauty for its Central Library in the downtown area. As part of the ceremony to mark the building's site in 1925, a time capsule was created and buried. When the Central Library opened its doors in July of 1926, the Time Capsule was securely covered buried in a cornerstone made of Indiana Limestone. Did the Leaders of the City and the Library imagine then that this Time Capsule would not be seen nor opened for 100 years, until May of 2026? Todd Lerew, Director of Special Projects for the Los Angeles Library Foundation, tells us about that moment, the effort it took to retrieve it, and what was found once opened. For Todd, he considers that to be his greatest experience in his eleven year career at the Library. This historic event came about for the celebration of the Centennial of the iconic building's architectural achievement and the importance of Libraries to the citizens of Los Angeles. The Time Capsule will be part of the July 11 Centennial Festival to be held at the Central Library, 630 West 5th Street, Los Angeles, 90071, phone (213) 228-7000. Come join the free fun on July 11th and throughout the year for CENTRAL 100, 1926 to 2026, with the theme, “Celebrating a Century of the Light of Learning”. In this episode of The Printerviews, I am joined by Theresa Hegel, Executive Editor for Special Projects and Sustainability at the Advertising Specialty Institute. Theresa has spent 12 years at ASI, built the industry's leading sustainability hub Promo for the Planet, won the Jesse H. Neal Award three times, and co-hosts the Branding Together podcast. Before ASI, she designed front pages under deadline at daily newspapers in Ohio and Pennsylvania. We get into convergence, where print and promo are already overlapping and where the gap still lies. Theresa makes the case that the two industries share more clients, campaigns, and opportunities than most people realise, and that the main barrier is not opportunity but language. We also cover what commercial printers get wrong about moving into promo, starting with the assumption that it requires significant capital investment. Sustainability takes up a good stretch of the conversation. ASI ran a joint study with European partners and competitor PPAI comparing the carbon footprint of promotional products against five advertising mediums including digital. The headline finding was that promo has an eight times smaller carbon footprint than digital advertising, which surprises most people. Theresa explains why it makes sense, and why the industry needs to be part of that conversation now rather than waiting to be dragged into it. Key Takeaways Print and Promo Are Already Converging: The same clients, the same campaigns. The industries are more intertwined than most people realise. No Equipment Needed to Get Into Promo: The promo distribution model runs on consultative sales and supplier relationships, not machinery. Promo Has an Eight Times Smaller Carbon Footprint Than Digital Advertising: The finding from a joint ASI and PPAI study that most people do not expect. Do Not Wait for Clients or Regulation to Force the Conversation: The businesses ahead are building capability now, not waiting for permission. Collaboration Across Competitors Is Possible: ASI ran the carbon study jointly with PPAI — a direct competitor — because sustainability is bigger than any one company. The One-Stop-Shop Opportunity Is Real: Clients do not want to shop separately for print and promo — if you can offer both, the door is already open. Use AI for Transcripts, Not for Writing: Theresa's team use it to surface quotes and save time in interviews — they do not use it to write articles. TikTok Is Worth Watching Even If You Are Not Posting: Trends in branded merch often surface there first — keeping an eye on it gives you a head start on what clients will want.

OEA Locals can amplify the impact of their members' dues dollars through OEA grant programs - especially now, with the new Local Capacity Grants that are available just for completing a Local Capacity Toolkit assessment. Mr. Matus reflects on his career from journalism to helping lead the nation's largest portfolio of K–12 school choice programs. Drawing on decades of covering Florida education policy, he explains how the state became a national leader in school choice through steady, incremental expansion rather than sudden universal eligibility. Matus discusses how key U.S. Supreme Court rulings and COVID-era school disruptions accelerated parent demand for flexible options, positioning Florida as the state serving the most students through education savings accounts and scholarship tax credits. He outlines the core principles behind that growth: building durable political coalitions, focusing relentlessly on families, safeguarding program integrity, and maintaining public trust. Looking ahead, he examines challenges including scaling ESA implementation, encouraging high-quality private schools, and addressing accountability concerns.

This is the first ever Historically Thinking Roundtable. Given that it's 2026, it's appropriate that this roundtable focus on the 250th anniversary of the United States, and how historians can be involved in its commemoration. Difficulties in doing this can arise from at least two reasons. One is that historians, like most academics, represent a relatively small slice of the political pie. And indeed, in these very partisan times, academics are some of the least trusted people in society–right around members of congress, according to a recent poll. Naturally academics and professionals in cultural institutions tend to get defensive about that, and beginning in a posture of attack and defense usually means that whatever happens afterward will not be good. But there's another problem, one related to historical thinking. Historians are taught to tell the whole story, however complicated and messy. They often find anything less than that to be distortion. And while arguably civic thought requires an element of gratitude, that's not how historians think of their own craft. These difficulties can be acutely felt by professionals in With me to discuss these difficulties, and how to resolve them are:Bill Peterson, Director of the State Historical Society of North DakotaTrait Thompson, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Historical Society, host of the podcast, co-host of A Very OK PodcastBen Jones, South Dakota State Historian, and Director of the South Dakota Historical Society, Ryan Cole, historian, Speechwriter at U.S. Senate, author most recently of The Last Adieu: Lafayette's Triumphant Return, the Echoes of Revolution, and the Gratitude of the RepublicAnd Jill Weiss Simins, historian and Director of Special Projects, Indiana State ArchivesChapters0:00 - Introduction 3:20 - Community Conversations in Red States 13:04 - Telling Complex History 20:28 - When Is Complexity Bad? 25:12 - Bridging Alienation and Division 31:10 - Primary Sources and Making Arguments 37:35 - Historical Distortion and Noble Lies 47:15 - America 250 Local Projects

"BOBINÔT, that big, brown, good-natured Bobinôt, had no intention of going to the ball, even though he knew Calixta would be there. For what came of those balls but heartache, and a sickening disinclination for work the whole week through, till Saturday night came again and his tortures began afresh? Why could he not love Ozéina, who would marry him to-morrow; or Fronie, or any one of a dozen others, rather than that little Spanish vixen? Calixta's slender foot had never touched Cuban soil; but her mother's had, and the Spanish was in her blood all the same. For that reason the prairie people forgave her much that they would not have overlooked in their own daughters or sisters." This week in Louisiana history. January 16, 1962. I am so excited to say that my guest on the GWA Podcast is the esteemed curator Kelli Cole to discuss the trailblazing Australian artist, Emily Kam Kngwarray! This is a very special BONUS episode and [as a one-off format] an exhibition walkthrough of Kngwarray's show at TATE MODERN. This is the first large-scale presentation of Kngwarray's work ever held in Europe and a celebration of her extraordinary career as one of Australia's greatest artists. Born in 1914, from the Alhalker Country in the Northern Territory, Kngwarray made thousands of works, reflecting her life as an Anmatyerr woman, but was – extraordinarily – only in her late 70s when she began painting in earnest, creating for ceremonial purposes and designs on the bodies of women. Listen to us explore the exhibition: witnessing first hand some of the most dazzling paintings I've ever seen. So whether you'll listen to this ahead of your visit, or be virtually transported here (for those who can't be here in person), I hope we can bring the magic of her paintings alive for you. About our guest: A Warumungu and Luritja woman from Central Australia, Kelli Cole is the Director of Curatorial & Engagement for the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Gallery of Australia project in Alice Springs. Previously, she held the position of Curator of Special Projects in the First Nations portfolio at the National Gallery of Australia, and has contributed to numerous publications, both nationally and internationally, on various aspects of First Nations art. In 2022, she worked closely with another esteemed curator, Hetti Perkins, as part of the team for the 4th National Indigenous Art Triennial: Ceremony. But the reason why we are speaking with Cole today is because she is the lead curator of a very exciting new exhibition here at London's Tate Modern: Emily Kam Kngwarray!
