There's something strange in the neighborhood. So let's slide down the fire pole, fire up our unlicensed nuclear accelerator proton packs, and make our clients feel uncomfortable! The Ghostbusters became an instant classic, but with an all star cast, questionable special effects, and enough evil psychokinetic energy to make any regular Twinkie seem tiny, does this film still hold up? As seen in the film, by day, Hoffman was in the courtroom - fighting conspiracy charges. By night, he would regularly perform at The Second City. Hoffman's stage appearance marked a transition at the theater - from a bunch of squares doing sketches; to progressive radicals that changed the face of comedy; marked by the addition of Harold Ramis as a cast member. Before 1984, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, and Harold Ramis were known to those who watched Saturday Night Live, rude comedies, or both. But when the little comedy called Ghostbusters, about a ghost containment system and the doofuses who run it, came out, everyone knew who they -oh, and Ernie Hudson- were. The film became a phenomenon. It helped launch the careers of all involved, inspired future ghost hunters, and even took the term 'gatekeeping' to whole new levels when in 2016 fans of the original were threatened by a bunch of females taking over their turf. So why were there only three -four- films made, and is the first film really the only good thing it inspired? Join myself, Matt, and the returning Logan James to help answer the call of just how good a franchise Ghostbusters is. Controversy, controversy, controversy. That's about the only way to describe a seemingly harmless remake attempt by noted comedy director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids). But almost the second the film was announced, the keyboard warriors were out in full force, calling for boycotts of the film and even making fun of the stars' appearances. But the remake was the result of several starts/stops when it came to a Ghostbusters 3, and when the script of that film went through draft after draft with some stars scoffing (Moranis was retired from acting, and Bill Murray was being, well, Bill Murray) the remake was greenlit as a compromise. But with some noted writers from The Office scripting, would Feig's film be up to par with even the lesser Ghostbusters 2? Join myself, Matt, and the returning Logan James to help answer the call of just how good a franchise Ghostbusters is. A movie that both the public and critics like is tough to make. A movie that is a phenomenon is almost impossible. But a sequel to a comedic movie that became a lexicon of pop culture? Well, that was the task given by an anxious studio looking to cash in to writers Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd, as well as the cast and of course director Ivan Reitman. As rare as a successful film is, a successful sequel is even tougher. And most say Ghostbusters 2...isn't exactly great. So how do we feel? Hello Bombers! It's time to celebrate the one year anniversary of the Not A Bomb podcast. This week, Brad and Troy discuss Ghostbusters 2, which was actually the catalyst for the podcast. Released five years after the original, Ghostbuster 2 brings back all of our beloved characters while introducing quirky, new ones (we're looking at you, Dr. Janosz Poha). Our heroes battle rivers of slime, New York bureaucracy, diapers, and the villainous Vigo the Carpathian.Failing to out gross the original film, Ghostbuster 2 was panned by critics who felt the film too closely resembled the plot of the first movie and the characters lacked any charm or wit. Brad and Troy use the two hour podcast runtime to debunk the haters and prove, once and for all, that Ghostbusters 2 is one of the best sequels in the industry!Special shoutout to all of the listeners who have made the first year of this podcast so special. Additionally, Brad and Toy would like to thank all of our guests for taking time to appear on our show and share their love for movies that bombed at the box office!Ghostbusters 2 is directed by Ivan Reitman and stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Harold Ramis, Rick Moranis, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and Peter MacNicol. If you want to leave feedback or suggest a movie bomb, please drop us a line at NotABombPod@gmail.com. Join myself, Matt, and the returning Logan James to help answer the call of just how good a franchise Ghostbusters is. Taking cues from a childhood spent fascinated by the occult and all things paranormal, Dan Aykroyd had an idea. He would cast his friends Eddie Murphy and John Belushi as ghost smashers, and they would take a massive script and turn it into an algorithm of all his ideas. But Belushi died, and Murphy was unavailable. So Harold Ramis came in, lightened up the script immensely, and suggested the casting of his friend Bill Murray in the Belushi role. Low and behold, Ghostbusters comes out, is a massive success, and all the chances they took paid off. So how'd it come to be? And is it as good as its reputation? Matt and myself welcome new dad Logan James back to the Aftertaste airwaves as we answer these and many more questions associated with the original seminal 1984 classic, Ghostbusters. “Who you gonna call?” In 1984, a Hollywood studio took a massive risk, spending millions of dollars on an ambitious science-fiction comedy film. Ghostbusters was the brainchild of Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, who starred in the film alongside SNL alumni Bill Murray. Director Ivan Reitman would bring the script to life, filming iconic scenes throughout New York City, on an extremely tight production schedule. The result was unlike any comedy created before or since and is widely considered to be one of the greatest films of all time. This week’s episode is all about how “lightning in a bottle” was captured in the 1984 film, Ghostbusters.

This week, we review the unfairly maligned, Ghostbusters 2. The film came out five years after the firtst, churned out by Columbia Pictures, who was in dire need of a hit after firing their CEO, David Putnam. The production was chaotic. While this film did not have the drastic re-writes of the first, it also had a shooting schedule of approximately one-third of the original's 13 month shoot. Ivan Reitman returned to direct. He and both of his children had cameos in the film. That's right, Jason Reitman, director of the upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife, was in this film! He is at the birthday party Ray and Winston are at (in a scene that was later homaged in TMNT). We talk about the elder Reitman blaming this movie's "failure" (still made over $200,000,000) on the Tim Burton, Michael Keaton, and Jack Nicholson brooding powerhouse: Batman. Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis returned to write the film. The original draft was very different, with the action taking place in Scotland, involving subterranean worlds and faerie rings. Special effects were completed by Industrial Light and Magic ("ILM"). Stephan Dane, designer of the Ecto-1, proton packs, and ghost trap, came back to this film and designed the giga-meter, slime scooper, and slime blower, but this time the poor boy was entirely uncredited. We talk about the new additions to the cast as well! Peter MacNicol played Janosz Poha, who has inarguably one of the most fun accents to impersonate ever (which he allegedly stole from Meryl Streep). We also go in depth into the history of the actor who played Vigo the Carpathian, “Wilhelm von Homburg,” born Norbert Grupe. He was the son of a WWII veteran, a boxer, a professional wrestler, and a total creep. How 'bout that soundtrack, eh? Bobby Brown, Elton John, and Danny Elfman, just to name a few! Speaking of music, this week's "Hidden Track" is Certain Doom, by Hrom: https://hromcan.bandcamp.com/ The song is off their album, Legends of the Powerheart: Part II. Here on Slashers, there is No April, Only Zuul. That’t right human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria! An ENTIRE MONTH of Ghostbusters content! This film was originally written by Dan Aykroyd. It was admittedly a bloated, overly expensive movie for someone with his pull in the industry at the time. Then came Harold Ramis to help parse the script down to something financially viable. Truly, short of a Troma movie, I have never come across a more fluid script in doing this show. A simple search online will reveal numerous drafts of the script, that changed all through shooting, and Bill Murray’s omnipresent improvisation. The film came from the Aykroyd family’s longstanding fascination and involvement in the paranormal, the occult, and technology (his grandpa, Maurice, tried to make a ghost telephone). Dan often said his two greatest obsessions as a kid were the incorporeal and law enforcement. As you trace the drafts of the script back to the original, this movie was a perfect amalgamation of the two, that became a perfect-er other thing. Directed by Ivan Reitman, who voiced several characters in the film, and helped shape this into the most successful comedy of all time… until Macaulay Macaulay Culkin Culkin (Yes, he changed his middle name from Carson) and Home Alone. Rarely do we get into alternate casting, but it seems that each and every part in this film aside from Aykroyd’s Ray Stantz was almost played by someone else. We truly almost had a film with Michael Keaton, Eddie Murphy, and John Candy… which makes me want that TV remote from Rick and Morty. Even casting the people in the film was weird, with some acting like dogs and another leveraging his role into making a remake of Razor's Edge, which flopped harder than Ray's fleshy member in that cringy scene in the bed with the ghost... you know the one. We also talk about the hugely expansive and intricate cinematic universe for this film including Caddyshack, Casper, Beetlejuice, and Little Shop of Horrors!? We talk about shooting locations for the film, spanning from Los Angeles to Firehouse, Hook & Ladder Company 8 of the NYCFD on 14 North Moore Street. What a nice change of pace from every other movie shot in Georgia and Toronto these days. Did you want to know how the special effects and equipment came to be? So did we, so we researched it and then talked about it. Spoiler alert, it was basically one overworked under-credited guy named Stephen Dane, who did it all in like two weeks. How many Ecto-1's did they make for the movie? What was Slimer's original name? And then his other name? Speaking of names, what was almost the name of this film?! WHY DID THEY STEAL THE NAME FROM TWO JOKERS AND THEIR PET APE FROM A 1975 TV SHOW?! ...trust me, we get into it. On this episode we talk everything from the production, to the casting, with inspirations and lore in between. You even get a dramatic rendition of Sigourney Weaver’s poem she wrote and performed at the wrap party after shooting ended. This week’s “Hidden Track” is Eye Roller by Lovebreakers. The inexorable repetition (which he alone experiences) thrusts him into a succession of psychological states—confusion, denial, nihilistic anger, extreme selfishishness, and finally acceptance—as he is forced to interact with the events and people of that seemingly endless February 2nd. Yet only at the point when he himself has changed inside, such that he gains the true affection of TV producer Rita Hanson (Andie MacDowell), does the time loop cease and his life begin again in a new way. Stunt performers are some of the most fascinating people in Hollywood to listen to, and our guest on this episode is no exception to the rule. Tom Morga first appeared in 1979 as a double for Leonard Nimoy in "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and worked in nearly all of the TOS movies. From there, he joined the crew of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" as a stunt performer and double, as well as assistant stunt coordinator alongside Dennis Madalone. Tom worked on TNG, DS9, VOY, Enterprise, and the Nemesis film. He is the "most seen stunt performer" in all of Star Trek, playing nearly every alien you can name, and has taken punches and done falls with the best of them! If you check his Memory Alpha page, it literally says "Too many to list"! In addition to Trek, we also discuss some of his other work in stunts on a resume with over 100 productions, including his time as Harold Ramis' stunt double in "Ghostbusters," working with Jackie Chan in his first feature film in the US, Gene Lebell and Rita Egleston stories, being part of an award-winning fight scene in "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" and working on the Academy Award-winning film "The Artist" from 2011, and much more.
