Richard Alexander Ankiel was born July 19th, 1979, in Fort Pierce, Florida to parents Richard Patrick Ankiel and Denise Turton. Growing up, Rick loved to play baseball, but his father was an over-bearing, “know it all” parent when it came to sports. He was worse at home, where he was a physically abusive drunk and dealt hard drugs. Baseball then became something Rick had to do, in order to get out of his situation at home. While Rick could play multiple positions, he excelled as a pitcher, and as a Senior at Port St. Lucie High, he went 11-1 with a 0.47 earned run average, striking out 162 batters in 74 innings pitched. Good enough to be named High School Player of the Year by USA Today.

It's that time of the year when everyone looks back at all of the great games released over the last 365 days, and the NXpress Podcast is no exception. This week finds Rick, Tim, and Patrick mulling over Goomba Stomp's list of our Best Games of 2019, debating the merits and placing of some of the choices while generally agreeing that there was a lot to like for Switch owners this year. Along the way we suggest a few substitutions, reflect on the greatness of the Switch games that cracked the list (especially that #1), and look forward to what 2020 might bring. Of course, before all the positivity and praise, we have a few things to say about the latest iteration of the Game Awards. While Rick enjoyed the brisk pacing, there's a feeling that the actual awards in this ‘awards show' might be getting a wee bit short-shrifted. Perhaps a celebration about the past year shouldn't focus so much on teasers for the coming year? Feel free to give us your opinion on whether The Game Awards succeeds as a tribute to the industry, or seems to be tending toward being just another promotional event. While it may feel like late June was the calm before the Nintendo Switch's storm, there were actually some decent rumblings that rolled through the eShop; this week Rick and Patrick sit down with Goomba Stomp editors Mike Worby and James Baker to find out how two of the more notable ones fared. First on the gothic chopping block is Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, the much-anticipated throwback to classic Castlevania from series producer Koji Igarashi. While Rick and Mike traitorously played the PS4 version and loved every second of exploring the atmospheric, labyrinthine castle, Patrick took a musket ball for the team and brings impressions of the beleaguered Switch version. While there has been plenty of discussion about that port's noticeable downgrade (and with good reason), is there enough good game below the slightly blurry surface for Switch owners to consider a purchase? You'll have to listen to find out. Next, Patrick and James sing the praises of Cadence of Hyrule — but perhaps for different reasons? While James was able to find his rhythm on the way to victory, Patrick shamefully turned on Fixed Beat mode — and loved every second of it. Regardless of how you play, the fun had from this Zelda spinoff is tough to beat. If you haven't picked it up yet, maybe we can convince you. Before all that, however, all four make some way-too-early requests for some things we'd like to see in the just-announced sequel to Breath of the Wild. Hmm...let's see. Dungeons, dungeons, and dungeons? Sure, let's go with that. For all this and more, tune in!

Like Michonne, we can find beacons of light shining through this post-Rick Grimes version of The Walking Dead, but man oh man, we sure felt his absence.   Kicking off six (6) whole, entire, full years after Rick's presumed death, we find our remaining mains in much different spaces emotionally than when we left them: Daryl walked into the abyss of his man pain, Carol has embraced the change her love for Ezekiel and Henry has brought into her life and Michonne? Well, she's still having a hard time grappling with life without her love. Every time we wanted to go, "Six years? Still?" Danai Gurira's breathtaking display of pain, unrest and sadness shut us up. But it's not all bad. She still has her Judith, who is now 10 years old and a handful. Whether she's a pointless addition to a hunting trip, bringing in stray survivors or constantly reminding Michonne of the world that she and Rick fought for, this little one is going to be a big player here. But also…if the old Judith wanted to make a guest appearance, we would not be mad. Things we're also not mad at: RICK MFing GRIMES, JR. The King Is Here! The Prophecy Has Been Fulfilled. What is this water on our faces?! Rick has to see his new son in these movies. There can be no other outcome.   While Rick may have wanted to bring the communities together post-All Out War, the exact opposite has happened without his guidance. The communities don't keep in contact with each other -- do they even know Maggie ghosted Hilltop? -- and they've become rigid and distrustful of strangers. What happened in the past 6 years to turn them that way? Who hurt y'all? Literally, who hurt Michonne because we saw that scar on her back and it's time to SQUARE UP!   Don't forget to donate to our virtual baby shower/fundraiser for RJ Grimes! All money donated goes to benefit Barnardo's, a UK charity close to Andy's heart. Rick Day is an entrepreneur from San Diego, CA. After getting out of the NAVY in 1985, he put himself through college at San Diego State University and soon thereafter founded a telecom firm which he grew over 17 years. After selling his company in 2009, Rick has invested and has an active management hand in a boat dealership, a finance brokerage company, and with two other partners. Furthermore, he owns five Phenix Salon Suites franchise locations.   Key Takeaways: [0:22] Today’s episode of Franchise Euphoria is brought to you by The Franchise 5 package. Head over to franchiseeuphoria.com/franchise5 to learn more! [1:01] Rick Day is a coach and operational executive who strives to turn entrepreneurs into CEOs. Additionally, he is a multi-unit franchisee for Phoenix Salon Suites. [2:25] Josh welcomes Rick back to the show. Click here to listen to Rick’s first appearance on Franchise Euphoria. [4:07] Rick’s first venture into entrepreneurialism was at an auto business to help him work his way through college. [6:04] The Phenix Salon Suites is a concept that was developed in Colorado Springs that revolves around giving salon professionals their own space where they get to set their own hours, keep all their revenue, and maintain their environment. [7:49] Rick’s role within this system is more on the backend of the business with cash-flow management, book keeping, and operational arrangements. [10:13] The renovations for a Phenix Salon Suite are quite extensive and require a specific buildout to make the most out of a space while also making it a unique and individualized spot. [15:30] While Rick never saw himself as a salon guru, he began looking into the opportunity with Phenix and he saw opportunity to apply his entrepreneurial spirit from previous experiences to this niche franchise system. [18:13] At each site, they have a manager to help with the onsite help and managing the tenants of each suite so that Rick doesn’t have to maintain presence at each of his five locations. [21:07] The great thing about this business model is that even if the economy does slow down, people still will need to get their hair done, nails done, and other assorted body treatments. The industry is very elastic in that sense. [24:31] Rick didn’t go through an extensive process before buying into Phenix; he did a few site inspections at other locations to be sure the quality was up to par and talked with some of the tenants to be sure this was a concept they loved. He eventually saw the unique opportunity it presented and decided to take the plunge. [26:18] Rick enjoys the aspect of franchising where if your build your business enough, eventually it will start to run on its own.
