The 7 Deadly Sins of Exercises

Business Resilience Decoded

Episode 75: This week's podcast is all about sin. Vanessa's guest is Rick Christ, a senior consultant at Crisis Prevention and Response, Inc., and a FEMA Master Exercise Practitioner. Rick lays out his seven deadly sins of crisis management exercises. The sins are mistakes organizations commonly make in preparing for and conducting exercises to demonstrate their readiness to respond to a disaster. Vanessa draws Rick out on the details and asks what organizations can do to avoid committing the seven sins. Rick and Vanessa hit on these key points: • One problem with traditional crisis response is it is usually limited to response, leaving out such critical steps as prevention and mitigation. As Rick puts it: “After I break all your windows and fill your basement with water, I leave.” • Organizations don't put enough effort into our Exercise Evaluation Guides. Rick says, “The difference between having fun with your toys and an exercise is measuring against your goal and recording that on your EEG.” • Too many organizations exercise specific scenarios rather than capabilities. As Vanessa says, “The crisis is insignificant; I don't care how it happened. The issue is, it happened.” Rick also explains what he means by saying most organizations exercise too big and dream too small, and he and Vanessa bond over their shared connections to Virginia, his current home, and the state she grew up in. Jason McBride, Senior Vice President with Presidential Wealth Management, comments the left continues their movement to push forth their social issues regardless of the death and destruction left behind.  The attack on oil and gas companies is now expanded to our agricultural community.  We take full meat counters and full grocery store shelves for granted.  Planning is always important, especially with your finances.  Give Jason a call at 303-694-1600 to set in place a plan for your retirement and other financial goals.  Jason will guide you through new laws and new investment vehicles entering the markets. David Czuczman is helping other people with Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) and, just like she has throughout his 12 years of living with the condition, his wife Jill is supporting him all the way. David overcame some initial reservations and became an active participant in the Ontario Neurodegenerative Research Initiative (ONDRI www.ondri.ca). Jill, as a care partner, also participates in contributing data about her experience as a care partner but also as co-chair of the Patient-Community Advisory Committee (PCAC). Rick Swartz is a physician and research co-lead of the ONDRI project. This episode explores the evolution of how people with lived experience who volunteer for research projects are being viewed no longer just as “subjects” but as “participants” and “collaborators”. As Rick says, research is becoming a team sport and people with lived experience are part of the team.  Jill describes what motivated her and David to enroll in the study and her own realization that she had a choice about how to respond to the challenge of David’s diagnosis. Her search for information and knowledge has led her to learn more about FTD and to reach out to obtain and offer support through such initiatives as a Facebook page that she hosts.  Jill describes some of the activities/tests that David underwent annually through the initial ONDRI study and also how they have contributed to pilots that are leading to a new iteration of ONDRI. She talks about things she has learned along the way and about hopes she has for how participants might learn more about their situation, through the research. Rick outlines how the next study will try to provide more timely and relevant information to participants. He also shares how the members of the PCAC help guide the research and even the development of the research questions. In his mind, the obligation to preserve history and raise awareness are community values and expressions of courage. If one seeks to inspire influence, one must be willing not only to lend a voice but share the whole story. As Rick continues, one of the ways he has done this is through his book, Traveling Feast. In the book, Rick focuses his premise on connecting generations through benevolence – the idea of sharing what you love at the core of generosity. Are you looking for a way to grow your agency through strategic partnerships? Do you struggle to understand what type of partnership might be right for you? There are so many ways you can build and grow your agency — the trick is creating a partnership that aligns with your prospective clients' needs. In today's episode, we'll cover: Technology agencies use to grow revenue. 2 ways to be a successful strategic partner. Understanding where your agency's value truly lies. Can a digital agency be good at SaaS? Today I sat down with Rick Carlson, President of SharpSpring. As a marketing automation software company, SharpSpring works with hundreds of agencies, building strategic partnerships that build on the strengths of all parties involved. He's here to talk about how agencies can grow revenue by finding and being a good strategic partner. New Technology Agencies Use to Grow Revenue As a marketing automation expert, Rick has seen the evolution of the various platforms out there. He says there has been a major shift in the way marketing automation has developed over the years. Instead of just traditional email marketing and landing pages, it now integrates with the full sales cycle. He refers to SharpSpring as not just marketing automation but rather a "revenue growth platform." Rick says there has been a lag between the innovation of marketing automation platforms and agencies' adoption of the full scope of the platform. No longer just limited to email automation, SharpSpring includes intelligent forms, CRM, social post scheduling, and even a chatbot tool. When agencies harness the full potential of a tool like SharpSpring it becomes a true "black box" and can exponentially escalate the agency's value to their client. As Rick says, agencies are only limited by their imagination -- the capabilities are there and ready to deploy. 2 Ways to Be a Successful Strategic Partner I always tell my clients there are three sales channels you need to focus on in order to grow: inbound, outbound, and strategic partnerships. Strategic partnerships is the one that is often neglected or misunderstood. It is not just a referral partner (those are great too, but not reliable for growth). To align with the right strategic partner, figure out which technologies make are natural companions with your core service. Then, leverage that partnership to help your agency grow. Once you find the right partners, there are two main ways Rick sees agencies become successful with those  relationships: The cookie-cutter approach: Agencies who utilize the cookie-cutter approach typically spend a lot of time perfecting one strategy. However, they are then able to replicate the same model over and over again. This method is highly efficient and highly profitable, focusing on volume over contracts. Personalization: With this approach, the agency looks at the unique needs of the client. This approach requires more strategy and often more time commitment. However, the trade-off is typically a bigger retainer and longer engagement. Understanding Where Your Agency's Value Truly Lies One of the problems with strategic partnerships is agencies find it easy to pass on their partners' work as their own. The main issue with this is it can cause the client to overlook the value your agency actually provides, which is strategy. Look at it this way, when you get your taxes done, the accountant doesn't expect you to believe they developed QuickBooks. When you go to a tax professional, you expect them to review your finances, find tax breaks, and file your taxes. The same holds true for digital agency clients and the tools you use to be great at the results you provide. Remember, most of the time technology is nothing more than a tool if it is not placed in capable hands. Make it clear where your agency's value truly lies. Can a Digital Agency Be Good at SaaS? Have you developed a technology you think would help others? Maybe you want to create another profit stream. There's nothing wrong with branching out, but once you start marketing a new SaaS tool, you become a software developer and not just an agency. Sure, you can do both, but if you choose this route, you need to separate the two. Trying to do both will become a distraction and one of your ventures will suffer. If you're going to create tech, you need a clear separation — different teams, different presidents, etc. Strategic partnerships are meant to benefit all parties involved. They should not be a one-way street. Focus on what you can provide and what your agency really needs. When you find the right match, you'll find more time to devote to other areas to help your agency grow. Struggling to maintain consistent project work and revenue streams? Check out SharpSpring. They’ve built a low-cost, comprehensive marketing, and sales platform that helps agencies increase their margins and build consistent monthly recurring revenue. For a limited time, you can get a live demo of SharpSpring and see what it’s like to use a platform built specifically for agencies. By the time O.G. Horny Horn RICK GARDNER (Bootsy’s Rubber Band, Parliament, et al) had reached his mid-20s, he was already a seasoned vet. After all, he had played with Kansas’ own Fabulous Flippers, a rockin’, blue-eyed soul outfit with a mean horn section famous for humbling Chicago at the Kansas City Rock Festival. Then, using his performance on the Flippers’ Something Tangible album as an audition, Rick had earned a top spot in Chase, blasting alongside his childhood idol, the legendary Bill Chase. So, when Rick found himself stuck in Los Angeles with badass drummer Melvin Webb after a gig had fallen through, he figured he already knew everything he needed to know about playing in a formidable band with top notch-brass.Then came the call to Webb from the J.B. giant himself, trombonist/arranger extraordinaire Fred Wesley—after which Rick wound up at an audition of sorts in Fred’s living room in Hollywood. The young African Americans also present were mostly unknown to Rick, though he did notice that one of them was very skinny and very tall. Charts were put in front of Rick, seriously advanced stuff that would take a high-level set of jazz chops to sight-read. He put his trumpet to his lips and nailed it. Now everyone was laughing, especially the tall fella. But what the bleep was so funny? That’s when Rick found out the lean dude was none other than Bootsy Collins, who along with Fred had never actually heard Rick play before, (though they definitely knew Chase). The laughter was from amazement and relief—this boy from Wichita was going to work out just fine. And that’s how Rick found himself rehearsing in Bootsy’s basement, then on the road to Detroit to work on a brand new project called Stretchin’ Out with BOOTSY’S RUBBER BAND.Rick wasn’t in Kansas anymore. But what started out as supreme awkwardness and culture shock soon became beautiful vibrations of brotherhood. And as far as Rick was concerned, he was playing in the best band, period. The Rubber Band rhythm section were supermen, and he was hitting The One and trading solos with Wesley and another James Brown alum, the sax attacker known as Maceo Parker. But it wasn’t until about a year in—when yet another JB genius named Richard “KUSH” Griffith came onboard as 2nd trumpet—that the HORNY HORNS finally reached the peak of their superpowers. Now, not only were the HH the crème de la crème of funk brass, but Rick had also met his best bud for life. “Kush & Rick was definitely a thang,” Rick confirms.Throughout the mid to late 70s, the Horny Horns put in double, triple, and sometimes even quadruple duty. “They bathed me in The Funk,” says Rick. His playing is all over such staples as Aah… The Name Is Bootsy, Baby! and Bootsy? Player of the Year, as well as some of the finest work that George Clinton and Parliament have ever done, including Motor Booty Affair, Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome, and the almighty Clones of Dr. Funkenstein. Add to that albums by Brides, Parlet, Bernie Worrell, and even the Horny Horns themselves—all of which Rick, Kush, Maceo, and Fred had to support live, oftentimes in the same night! As Rick sums it up: “That’s quite a shower.”After P-Funk, Kush & Rick bounced around for a while, notably touring with Marvin Gaye. But by the 90s, Rick saw that just being a gigging guy provided little stability. So he dug in and learned everything he could about laying down his own stuff. These days, Rick lives with his wife and biz partner Pat in Colorado, where he records and licenses original music, thus far amassing a catalog of 500+ compositions.Rick is an absolute treat to interview, a clear-spoken man who can be rightfully braggadocious and lucidly humble in the same breath. In this ocean-deep, master class conversation, Rick opens up about the emotional highs and lows of his career, answers our technical questions about how The Funk was made, and relates touching personal stories about Glen Goins, Phelps “Catfish” Collins, and of course Kush—including Rick and his wife sharing Kush’s final days. Rick also raps about the arranging styles of Fred Wesley versus Bernie Worrell, Bootsy’s little-known musical gifts, why George would not tolerate a drummer messing with the beat, and that time Sade called Rick on the phone just to say “Hi.”

When Rick Eichholtz and his wife, Linda Jones Eichholtz, opened Ike & Jonesy’s at 17 W. Jackson Place 35 years ago, downtown was a very different place. The Indianapolis Colts hadn't started playing yet, Circle Centre mall wasn't open and even Union Station was still under renovation. But Ike & Jonesy's found an audience quickly, in part by focusing on police, media, firefighters and a surprise group—lawmakers and lobbyists, who showed up every January when the legislative session began. As downtown changed, the bar persevered. But in 2016, an affiliate of Sun Development & Management Corp. bought the building and has plans to turn it into a hotel. As Rick puts it, Ike & Jonesy's doesn't fit into the plans. So Sun and the Eichholtzes reached an agreement that means the bar will close after its New Year's Eve party. Rick understands all that and more.He started out working with gay men who were ready to come out of the closet, but now works with so many different types of people in so many different situations. We all have closets that we hide in, and for most people listening to this podcast those closets have to do with being an adult with autism, an adult with Asperger's or an adult with some sort of mental health issue. We hide in our closet, afraid to let the outside world in and not wanting them to see us for who we really are, but we need to let go of that stigma and not be afraid to open that closet door and proudly come out.Mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of. It's part of who we are and we are all awesome people! As Rick says on the podcast, "I think a lot of people hide because they're afraid. They also don't want to disrupt the holidays. And then they get into it, and suddenly it doesn't become as much of a priority. And then lo and behold, it will be February, March, April, July, August. And suddenly I'm still not being who I'm meant to be."If you suffer from any type of mental illness or from an autism diagnosis and you;re afraid to let people in on your secret, this is a half-hour you will NOT want to miss! You can find Rick online at www.rickclemons.comCheck out the links below to find your favorite podcast service and subscribe so you don’t miss a single episode of the Not Weird Just Autistic Podcast!

SUMMARY: In this episode of DYB, Steve shares the mic with Rick Holtz; Owner & Operator of HJ Holtz & Sons in Richmond, Virginia. As a multi-generational family business, HJ Holtz & Sons started in the early 1900’s by Rick’s grandfather. As Rick grew up, he eventually inherited the business and ran with it. As HJ Holtz & Sons grew, however, there were multiple snags Rick ran into. Enjoy this episode as both dissect ways to prevent others from tripping up while transitioning from small family business to a large business. ------------------------ WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: -How to start thinking bigger about your company -How to keep a grip on your business as it continues to grow -How to take the first steps toward finding reliable people to run your business for you. -How Rick executed the transition from Family Business to “Real” Business ------------------------   QUOTES: “2008 was when I decided I needed help. I needed somebody to be objective, to hold me accountable...somebody who wasn’t emotionally tied to this family business.” “Something I didn’t realize was that this company was my dad’s model. I was trying to run a very large company as if it was a small company.” “Being more deliberate with different parts of the company...finding people who could be owners of those parts of the company was a huge shift.” “Once you get to a certain level, you can’t survive and lead a healthy lifestyle without learning how to rely on other people.” “I’m a big proponent of hiring within. If you have a structure to progress people into higher leadership positions, then I think that’s a great thing.” ------------------------ HIGHLIGHTS: [1:40] How was HJ Holtz & Sons started? [9:40] At what point did the business expand once Rick increased his involvement? [17:21] How has Rick’s culture shifted from 2008 to now? [22:10] What KPIs are Rick measuring internally? As I guy who started his career in manufacturing before moving to healthcare in 2005, I don't get many opportunities to visit the "gemba" at a factory very often anymore. I get to occasionally visit a Toyota plant (in the U.S. or Japan). As I'm getting settled back into the Dallas / Fort Worth (DFW) area, I'm reconnecting with some of the people I know through our local "Lean DFW" network.foremanOne of those Lean DFW people is Rick Foreman, the VP of Lean Development at Federal Heath Sign Co. Federal Heath makes big signs for gas stations, restaurants, hotels, hospitals, and the like. There's metal being cut and bent, stuff being painted, structures being built, and lights being installed and assembled. Rick, pictured at left, is more of a khakis-and-polo-shirt guy (as he was dressed on Friday). Suits and ties exist daily in hospitals, but exist mostly in LinkedIn profile photos in manufacturing :-) We had the chance to meet for a few hours on Friday morning to catch up andtalk about their Lean approach at Federal Health, across their different sites. Rick and the folks at Federal Heath have a very strong focus on developing people. As Rick says, "Doing Lean with people, instead of doing it TO them." They have mentoring and development programs tied to Lean, with leaders at different levels learning from each other in different ways. Their President / CEO is the chief advocate for Lean as a business strategy. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lean-blog-audio/support
