In this episode of the Secret MENS Business podcast we speak to James Parr about how his life got turned upside down after getting cancer in his ankle, and then having to have his foot amputated. His story is more than just inspiring, it demonstrates how ones mind can create adversity if challenged. James Parr was diagnosed in August 2019 with a rare form of bone cancer ‘osteosarcoma’ and after several months of chemotherapy his right leg was amputated below the knee. How does a diagnosis and resulting amputation of his leg affect such a young man? “Well, it didn’t impact on me too much as I kept getting a lot of infections and I just wanted it to be over,” James who underwent chemotherapy for almost six months after his surgery, said. “I was back in the gym 10 days later, challenging myself to see what I was capable of. “I had the artificial leg fitted a month later and didn’t particularly enjoy going into rehabilitation, I just wanted to get on with it. “I experienced some phantom pain early on after the surgery but it rarely happens now, it’s a strange kind of pain.” Today James is disciplined in his training regime, up at 5.30 am six days a week, putting in the hours with swim training, Cross-fit and strengthening, running and cycling to become more competitive in the three disciplines. He also consumes a healthy high protein diet, which includes 1 kg of fruit and vegetables daily. James works in education support at Cobram Primary School while studying to become a teacher. Before this he held a similar role at Cobram Specialist School. In what little spare time he has, he is also establishing demand from several advertisers as a photographic model. While James admits he has a long road ahead as a triathlete, he is prepared to do the hard yards and has the determination to be the best version of himself at whatever he chooses to do. A Sermon for the Fourth Sunday after Easter St. John 16:5-15 & St. James 1:17-21 by William Klock Our lessons today continue to carry us through the Easter season. In our Gospel we see the story moving us gradually from the events of Holy Week and Easter to the Ascension and to Pentecost and in our Epistle St. James points us to the practical outworking, to the implications for the Christian life of what Jesus was explain to his disciples. Our Gospel today isn’t the easiest passage to understand, but it helps to have a sense of where the Jewish people were coming from in the First Century. There were times when Israel prospered and flourished, but most of her history involved difficult times, whether that was her slavery in Egypt, internal conflicts, conflicts with her pagan neighbours, or her exile to Babylon. Through these difficult times, God’s people cried out to him, whether it was the nation as a whole crying out for God to give them justice in the face of wicked enemies or the righteous within Israel crying out for God to judge the wicked kings or priests or false prophets in her midst. God’s people pleaded for their day in God’s court. They knew he was the just Judge, they knew his promises, and they knew that if and, more importantly when, they had the opportunity to stand before him, he would hear their case, that he would hear their evidence, and that he would judge rightly—that he would find his people (or the faithful remnant among them) to be in the right, that he would vindicate them, and that he would punish their enemies and set things to right. Through the Psalms and here and there in the Prophets we get glimpses of the heavenly courtroom and hear Israel pleading with the Lord to let her stand there and to hear her case. And things were no different in Jesus’ day. The people pleaded with the Lord to hear their case against the Romans, or against the corrupt Herodians, the Romans’ puppet local rulers, or against the men who had corrupted the priesthood and the temple. This desperate longing for God’s justice is what Jesus draws on in the Upper Room as he speaks to his disciples, preparing them for what’s to come. Let me read part of our Gospel to you again and see if you can hear it. But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. Jesus is telling his friends that he’s going to have to leave them and this leaves them with all sorts of questions. The Messiah was supposed to set everything to rights, but how is that going to happen if he leaves? And now Jesus is saying that the problems are going to continue. His people will face rejection and persecution. But he also promises that they will know the vindication that Israel had always longed for. This is, in fact, just the reason why he’s got to leave. You see, they thought that the Messiah would be the one standing as their advocate when they had their day in God’s court. That he would be their lawyer—to put it in our terms. They expected Jesus to be their Perry Mason. If he were to leave, who would make their case? But Jesus is going to do something even better. Jesus will send the Helper. The Greek word is parakletos. Jesus is referring to the Holy Spirit, but the word he uses here refers to one who will stand as a mediator or intercessor or an advocate. The Spirit will stand before the Judge like Perry Mason to make the case. But here’s the critical thing: Jesus the Messiah will by the one in the dock. He will be the one on trial. And this is why Jesus had to leave them. He was arrested, falsely accused, and unjustly executed. The world issued a verdict against Jesus: he was a false messiah, he was in the wrong. But by raising him from the dead, his Father overturned that verdict and declared that he is, indeed, the Messiah. And the disciples were overjoyed to have him back—but then he had to leave again. Why? They need their Messiah with them, so they think, to set things to rights. But, no, he’s got to leave again. Why? Because his vindication is not complete. Jesus’ vindication is completed in his ascension, as he returns to the Father to sit as his side as Lord of all. And so Jesus will be raised from the dead and he will ascend to his throne. And this these things will be Exhibit A and Exhibit B when the Spirit makes his case in court. The Spirit, Jesus says, will bring the evidence to convict the world of sin. First, the Spirit will hold up the world’s rejection of Jesus himself and its continuing pursuit of its own values and agendas as evidence. Second, the Spirit will bring evidence to convict the false justice of the world. Most translations make this already difficult passage more difficult by translating dikaiosyne as “righteousness” when “justice” suits the passage far better. The world believes itself to be just or in the right. We see this supremely in the false conviction and execution of Jesus. But the world’s verdict on Jesus was overturned that first Easter and God’s verdict in regards to Jesus is confirmed at his ascension. Third, the Spirit will bring the evidence to show that the world’s judgment or condemnation of Jesus and his people is wrong. Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension reveal the defeat of the “ruler of this world”—of the satan, of sin, and of death. In short, what the Lord has promised and what Israel had longed for is about to be fulfilled in and by Jesus himself and will be known by those who have united themselves to him in faith. Brothers and Sisters, here’s the wonderful thing here. Jesus is the one who will stand in the dock to face the judge. The Spirit will make his case. The judge will find him—from our perspective today, had already found him—to be in the right. And then we find out that Jesus invites us sinners to join him in the dock as the Father issues his verdict. We have done nothing. Jesus has done it all. But when we by faith step into the dock and identify ourselves with Jesus, his vindication becomes our vindication. He reality becomes our sure and certain hope. Jesus exhorts his friends in verses 14-15: He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. “He will take what is mine and declare it to you.” But, Brothers and Sisters, it’s more than the verdict in favour Jesus that the Spirit declares and passes on to us. Let’s look at our Epistle again. Again, this is James 1:17-21. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. The work of the Spirit that Jesus describes in the Gospel is not limited to the heavenly courtroom or to esoteric knowledge about Jesus. This should be obvious if we remember Israel’s story. Her relationship with the Lord had always been meant to work out in her life and her life was meant to be a witness to the world of life in the presence of God. If the Spirit will come alongside Jesus’ people to see them vindicated in the heavenly court, and if the Spirit is to give them understanding into just what it is that Jesus has done by his death and resurrection, St. James knew that the Spirit will also cause the life of God to well up in this new Israel that is rooted in Jesus. James is well-known for his stress on the works that necessarily accompany faith. God doesn’t merely save his people from sin and death, he saves them to be his stewards. It seems likely that when today’s Epistle was chosen to be paired with our passage from John 16, an association was meant to be made between Jesus’ promise of the Spirit and James’ statement that “every perfect gift is from above”. While James does not speak directly of the Spirit, the gifts from above that he does address are those conferred by the Spirit and his exhortation here closely parallels Jesus’ exhortation in the Gospel. James speaks first of the wisdom God bestows on those who ask (v. 5) and then, after urging his readers to stand firm in the face of persecution (v. 12), he reminds them that God is not the source of our temptation (vv. 13-14). Just the opposite, in fact: God only sends us good gifts. In our fallen state, our disordered desires lead us to sin and sin to death, but God has spoken his “word of truth”—his logos, surely a reference both to Jesus and to God’s word in a more general sense—to bring about a work of new creation in us. If we in Jesus, the new creation that has begun in him is beginning in us as well. Even as we face trials and struggle against sin, the firstfruits of God’s new world are manifest in our lives. But Friends, this leaves us with a choice. Will we pursue sin or will be pursue the life of God? In the heavenly court we have been declared by God to be in the right, because we have united ourselves to Jesus in faith. His vindication is our vindication. The Spirit has given witness on our behalf. But woe to the one who names Jesus while manifesting anger, filthiness, and wickedness. Try as we might to claim the vindication of Jesus for ourselves, a life characterised by wickedness rather than the Spirit reveals any such claim to be superficial. As James will write in 2:20, faith without works is dead. Brothers and Sisters, when we are united with Jesus the Spirit not only makes the Father’s verdict that Jesus is in the right our verdict, but he also does a work of transformation—of regeneration and renewal in us that gives evidence of that verdict. The evidence that we have taken hold of Jesus in faith is God’s new creation welling up in us as we manifest the fruit of the indwelling Spirit and produce good works. And so, even as we grasp Jesus in faith, we also pray in faith as we do in our Collect today, for grace—for grace that will rightly order our sinful and unruly hearts, for grace that we will love what he commands, and for grace that we will desire what he has promised. Let us pray: Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the many and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Sunday is ANZAC day - and this year it comes at a particularly important time for Australia’s military image. Last week, Scott Morrison announced Australia’s remaining troops will leave Afghanistan by September, following President Biden’s announcement of the United States withdrawal. One negative legacy of Australia’s participation in this conflict is documented in the Brereton report on Australia war crimes, which detailed alleged incidents of unlawful killing and cruelty by some special forces troops. Among the report’s recommendations was the revocation of the Meritorious Unit Citation that had been awarded to some 3,000 soldiers. The Chief of the Australian Defence Force, Angus Campbell, agreed with the recommendation. But critics were fierce and this week the new Defence Minister Peter Dutton said the award would not be revoked. Executive Director of the Australia Defence Association Neil James joins the podcast, to discuss the withdrawal from Afghanistan, the strategic risk China poses, and the high profile new minister in the portfolio. James is concerned the departure of international forces from Afghanistan will lead to more instability. “By withdrawing and without a peace agreement with the Taliban, it’s going to be a reasonable problem. The simple thing about all wars is they always end when one side gives up or both sides get tired. And in this case, unfortunately, the message being sent to the Taliban is that the international community has given up.” On China, James is concerned about any “number of flash points that could easily cause a war, even if only accidentally”. Taiwan “is the big flash point.” “President Xi will seek to legitimise his presidency by, in his words, absorbing Taiwan back into the motherland. That will automatically cause a war for the simple reason that Taiwan is a functioning democracy and a lot of the world’s democracies will probably object to that. That’s the biggest flash point.” On the controversial Dutton decision to override Campbell over the citation, James believes the minister did the wrong thing. “I think probably, to be brutally frank, he was ill advised. And I think if he [had] bothered to consult a bit more broadly and understood the implications of what he was doing, he may not have done it.” “[The revocation] needs to be done for the simple reason that the revocation of the citation isn’t an Australian issue - it’s an international issue. We’re showing the world that we’re taking the Brereton report seriously. "We admit the war crimes occurred even if we have difficulty convicting anyone of it, eventually. They certainly definitely occurred. And therefore, we have to be seen to be doing something about it. "And by cancelling the revocation, we’re actually sending the wrong message internationally about Australia’s commitment to international law. But we’re also sending the wrong message internally within the defence force about unprofessional behaviour.” While James thinks Dutton was “the only bloke who could have taken over the ministry after [Linda] Reynolds” was moved, he remains a strong defender of Reynolds. Even before the Brittany Higgins matter, Reynolds faced considerable criticism from commentators. James believes there was a sexist element in some of the attacks on her performance in the portfolio, and he condemns those who thought Australia couldn’t be “taken seriously as a country when both the foreign minister and the defence minister were female”. “I mean, that’s just absurd in the 21st century. It was actually absurd for most the late 20th century.”

If you've not read Atomic Habits by James Clear, we urge you to stop what you’re doing and go and get it. It's one of those books that once you've read it, you start to think about how those ideas can change your reality. “The book’s been out almost two years now and has sold over two million copies. And for me, the most gratifying thing is that the ideas are useful. The best thing is to see people using them to build better habits in their own life or to break habits that they've been struggling with for a while.”While James is not the father of thinking about habits, he is an expert on the subject, having built up a newsletter around the topic years before launching his bestselling book. “I'm not the smartest person, I'm not the fastest person, I’m not the first person to talk about this stuff. But I want to do it in a way that's useful.”By doing this, he's simply a master of demonstrating what best practice looks like and how that impact can impact your future, which above anything else, makes him a person you might want to listen to. “A habit is a behaviour that's tied to a particular context. And what you start to realise is that you cannot have a behaviour outside of an environment. They all happen within a certain context. Any time the environment changes in a big way, behaviour changes in a big way.”So for everything you need to know about habits and how they can help you be the best version of yourself, don’t miss out on this truly insightful and illuminating episode. Sermon by Phil Reinders James is an epistle of pastoral encouragement and wisdom for the everyday living out of faith. Connecting the rich Hebrew wisdom tradition and the gospel of Jesus Christ, James shows us the way to walk as we follow Jesus. While James doesn't teach new theology, he does show how faith works, challenging followers of Jesus on how they should live. Written by the half-brother of Jesus, James is filled with lively metaphors and powerful one-line wisdom sayings, calling the church to live the wisdom of Jesus. Eugene Peterson writes: “The letter of James shows one of the church's early pastors skillfully going about his work of confronting, diagnosing, and dealing with areas of misbelief and misbehaviour that had turned up in congregations committed to his care. Deep and living wisdom is on display here, wisdom both rare and essential. Wisdom is not primarily knowing the truth, although it certainly includes that; it is skill in living.”

On Sunday afternoon a voice that the public never really heard until later in his life was silenced. For years, Mississippi born James Harris played what would today be regarded as a stereotype, an African cannibalistic savage who, while he intimidated his opponents and the fans, didn't always seem to understand the rules of the sport he was competing in. While James was a soft spoken, gentle man who loved to laugh and sing, his alter ego, Kamala The Ugandan Savage, was an evil, silent brute who would demolish anyone who got in his way. We'll begin this evening by remembering James, including commentary from Jerry Lawler about the creation of the character and George "The Animal" Steele talking about getting Kamala heat. WWE Network has added several new promotions to their video vault that will begin airing this weekend. NXT saw the return of someone many people thought might not be coming back due to rumors surrounding him. Meanwhile, AEW saw a big star on the independent scene debut along with a former WWE talent, but not someone you might have expected. While New Japan Pro Wrestling has been making its slow climb back form COVID-19, a quirky little company has developed a cult following and is starting to draw some attention oustide of Japan. Steve recently saw a live video from the group and he will tell us about it. Speaking of New Japan, their US based show is bringing some top talent of their own, including someone many people thought had given up the business. MLW just signed a new distribution deal, Lana posted personal details about her and Miro on Instatgram and apparently confirming a story about WrestleMania in San Diego. We'll discuss these and many other stories, including our alternate plans for those AEW weeks tonight.

You can truly do anything you put your mind to. So if your mind and your heart is telling you to do something you’re only selling yourself short if you don’t take the opportunity to go after that.” Lisa Bodenburg “Looking at the positive versus maybe what I’m missing out on or any sort of loss pain that may be there. From his childhood in Marshall, Missouri to present day, the music of this artist has captivated audiences throughout the world.Discovered by Quincy Jones in 1963, James recorded his first solo album “Bold Conceptions” that year for Mercury Records. Fifty-eight albums and world wide recognition would follow through five decades as an award winning pianist, composer, music director and producer. While James has established himself as a true original in the jazz world, his music has also had a profound effect on the history of Hip Hop. His songs “Nautilus” and “Take Me to Mardi Gras” are among the most sampled in Hip Hop history. www.bobjames.comwww.fourplayjazz.comhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dv6ALYWxQtI
“Time, experience, and a willingness to learn, that’s the bridge from here to where you’re trying to go.” - James WilemanThank you for tuning in to episode 79 of The CUInsight Experience podcast with your host, Randy Smith, co-founder of CUInsight.com. This episode is brought to you by our friends at PSCU. As the nation’s premier payments CUSO, PSCU proudly supports the success of more than 1,500 credit unions.Credit unions across the country have been extremely agile over the last few months in responding to various service challenges and a whole host of other difficulties. In chatting with James Wileman, President and CEO of Credit Union 1 in Alaska and this week’s podcast guest, I’ve gained some perspective into how he and his team have fast-tracked essential projects that typically would have taken them 6 months in 6 days. We also discuss the work they’re doing to better serve their members and the state of Alaska now and going forward. In expanding services to meet members' needs, James and I discuss the partnerships their credit union has formed with state-led agencies to provide relief to small businesses in the communities they serve. James also shares his belief that credit unions must be proactive in finding new opportunities to serve their members, as well as discusses pivoting their long-term service strategy to better accommodate members in this new normal. During the episode, we also discuss how James came to lead the team at Credit Union 1, what he's learned from hardship in his career, and why you shouldn't “carry the boat anchor for longer than you need to”. James also tells us about the amazing team he has at Credit Union 1, as well as the network of peers and mentors who have helped guide him over the years. While James admits that he sucks at work-life balance, we learn that he loves to go camping with his family to recharge. He also shares that he’s always wanted to go to space, loves the L.A. Lakers, and encourages everyone to read books by professional athletes and coaches to learn more about teamwork. I hope you find some life lessons that resonate with you in this episode. We had the chance to get to know James Townsend and his path from the Bronx, through South Jersey, then the University of Iowa, then back to Rutgers and all the way to the Chicago Bears and beyond! While James is certainly a deeply gifted athlete, he’s an even more gifted coach, husband and father. If you ask him, it’s all because he’s allowed Jesus to mold him into the man he is today. He feels God has blessed him so that he can be a blessing to others. His faith is obvious, not simply because he’s comfortable talking about it, but because he walks it out daily as a servant leader. This was recorded at a time when the 2020 racial tensions were just starting to explode (Late May) and it gave us a wonderful opportunity to talk about the lurking evil that is racism. James discusses how being transparent in our approach with each other can be the key to getting past some of the challenges. But he’s also realistic in knowing not all people have a heart that allows them to want to see an end to racism and he discusses how he deals with that challenge in light of both his own life, as well as his family’s. James continues to compete in Olympic style powerlifting events, runs a successful gym in Des Moines, Iowa and is father of three great girls, one who’s just graduated from High School and the two younger girls are developing just as impressively - no doubt the result of two amazing and loving parents.

John 7:1-9 (NLT)Jesus and His Brothers7 After this, Jesus traveled around Galilee. He wanted to stay out of Judea, where the Jewish leaders were plotting his death. 2 But soon it was time for the Jewish Festival of Shelters, 3 and Jesus’ brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, where your followers can see your miracles! 4 You can’t become famous if you hide like this! If you can do such wonderful things, show yourself to the world!” 5 For even his brothers didn’t believe in him.6 Jesus replied, “Now is not the right time for me to go, but you can go anytime. 7 The world can’t hate you, but it does hate me because I accuse it of doing evil. 8 You go on. I’m not going to this festival, because my time has not yet come.” 9 After saying these things, Jesus remained in Galilee.Jesus had a devoted inner circle who could see He was more than just another rabbi. But the people who struggled the most to understand Jesus was His own family (John 7:5). James was Jesus’ half-brother, born to Joseph and Mary (Matthew 13:55). While James and Jesus grew up together, it wasn’t until after Jesus’ death and resurrection that James understood exactly who his brother was. When Jesus appeared to James after His resurrection, James saw that Jesus was the only begotten Son of God (1 Corinthians 15:7). Those closest to us are sometimes the hardest to reach. Jesus knew how His family felt, but He never let their disbelief discourage Him from His mission (Mark 6:4). After all, reaching skeptics like His brothers was the mission (John 3:16). Imagine how Jesus felt when His little brother, James, finally came to faith. James went on to become a pillar of the early Christian church in Jerusalem (Galatians 2:9) because of his encounter with the risen Christ. Likewise, don’t let the skeptics in your family discourage you. They see you reading your Bible, being kind when others aren’t, and experiencing peace in the midst of chaos. You are influencing others as you allow Jesus to change you. You may be the only believer in your family. The people you’re closest to might mock or dismiss your faith. But don’t hide who you are in Christ. Instead, keep living out what you believe. One day, your steadfast love and obedience to God just might be what changes their mind. Foster parents know what other foster parents need. Foster parents need help. While James 1:27 compels us to care for orphans and widows, only about 3% of Christian families actually welcome children into their homes through foster care or adoption. So, what does that mean for the 97% who don’t? They get to hold up the weary arms of families who are on this ministry-mission field by fostering them with blessings. Dutchess County foster mom, Angela Paganelli, along with her church, the Evangelical Free Church of Clinton Corners in NY, established a ministry called - Foster Blessings. The members of this small congregation in the Hudson Valley are making and delivering homemade meals to foster families when they welcome a new foster placement into their homes. Learn how Angela and her church are fostering hope in the lives of children and families in their community by listening to our conversation on our Orphans No More podcast. You can find out more about Fostering Blessings on their Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/FosterBlessingsMealsMinistry/

While it may feel like late June was the calm before the Nintendo Switch's storm, there were actually some decent rumblings that rolled through the eShop; this week Rick and Patrick sit down with Goomba Stomp editors Mike Worby and James Baker to find out how two of the more notable ones fared. First on the gothic chopping block is Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, the much-anticipated throwback to classic Castlevania from series producer Koji Igarashi. While Rick and Mike traitorously played the PS4 version and loved every second of exploring the atmospheric, labyrinthine castle, Patrick took a musket ball for the team and brings impressions of the beleaguered Switch version. While there has been plenty of discussion about that port's noticeable downgrade (and with good reason), is there enough good game below the slightly blurry surface for Switch owners to consider a purchase? You'll have to listen to find out. Next, Patrick and James sing the praises of Cadence of Hyrule — but perhaps for different reasons? While James was able to find his rhythm on the way to victory, Patrick shamefully turned on Fixed Beat mode — and loved every second of it. Regardless of how you play, the fun had from this Zelda spinoff is tough to beat. If you haven't picked it up yet, maybe we can convince you. Before all that, however, all four make some way-too-early requests for some things we'd like to see in the just-announced sequel to Breath of the Wild. Hmm...let's see. Dungeons, dungeons, and dungeons? Sure, let's go with that. For all this and more, tune in!
The 2019 Spice Girls reunion is upon us all but before this stadium tour, we had the 2007/08 global arena tour - "Return of the Spice Girls" - the iconic tour that saw all five Spice Girls come back together. Yep, Emma, Mel C, Mel B, Geri and Victoria performed all the classics and danced their little hearts out. John reminisces about all his favorite parts of the tour but, unfortunately, James lived in the middle of nowhere during this time and never got to see it. Thankfully, some amazing Spice fan compiled all the concert footage together and created a reunion tour spectacular that was posted on youtube. Of course, with the timing of the new SpiceWorld2019 tour this means the hosts can't help but talk about all the highlights so far! Geri's dress, Emma being iconic, Mel B giving it her all and Mel C continuing to be the powerhouse of vocals. While James and John haven't quite made it to the Wembley finale yet, there is a lot to be said about SPICEWORLD and the comparisons between this and the previous reunion tour! Solo numbers, all male dancers and unusual setlist choices. WHO KEEPS REQUESTING DISCO MUSIC ON THESE TOURS?!!! The opinions are flying all over the place in this fun-filled episode!
One of the most prominent themes in James is human speech. While James mentioned the importance of controlling our tongues in James 1:19 and 1:26, he dedicated most of James 3 to the power of speech for good or for evil. He also pointed us to the help we need to harness our speech for good.

Jimmy Young and Ken Norton could easily have been given decisions against Ali in 1976. A European-level fighter like Alfredo Evangelista could last the distance in May 1977. And power-puncher Earnie Shavers, despite falling short on points, had inflicted 10 fights worth of damage on “The Greatest” over 15 brain-shuddering rounds that September. Ali, who should have been enjoying retirement, needed a very easy fight – enter Leon Spinks. The St. Louis product was a decorated amateur star. He had captured bronze at the World Championships in 1974, silver at the Pan-Am Games in 1975 and gold, as a light heavyweight, at the Montreal Olympics in 1976. Great stats, but, alarmingly, the challenger was bringing a (6-0-1, 5 knockouts) professional record into a heavyweight championship fight. The 24-year-old Spinks would be the most inexperienced professional to vie for the title (in 21yrs, since "1957"). 57. Spinks won a split decision 58. The matchup would win Fight of the Year, Round of the Year (for rnd 15), and Upset of the Year awards. 59. Who: James Ambrose Johnson Jr., a.k.a. Rick James The Superfreak (@ 30 yrs old): singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, hitmaker, performer, producer, impresario, and pioneer in the fusion of funk groove and rock. A flamboyant, provocative, charismatic, brilliant, volatile, and outrageous bona fide superstar. 121. Why is he being featured: Debut solo album, Come Get It!, with hit singles "You and I" & "Mary Jane" 122. Short Story: Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, he was one of eight children. His father was abusive and abandoned the family when James was eight. His mother was a former dancer who worked as a housekeeper, but also was a numbers runner. Went to Catholic school and was an altar boy, he also committed petty theft crimes, and spent some time in juvenile detention centers. He also began doing drugs. While James was always musically inclined, it was not until he performed in a talent show in high school that he seriously considered a career in music. He formed a group called the Duprees. At the same time, he joined the Naval Reserve to avoid the draft. As he and his group gained popularity he began to skip out on his naval duties. James was soon drafted, but he fled to Canada. His uncle was Melvin Franklin of the Temptations. Franklin helped his nephew get a recording contract with Motown Records. This led to James striking a deal with the government and serving some time in prison for draft evasion. After his release, he began to record his first album, which included the hits "You & I," and his ode to marijuana, "Mary Jane." The album sold two million copies. 123. James's second album, Bustin' Out of L Seven(1979), followed the previous album's success, eventually selling a million copies. 124. His third album, Fire It Up (1979) and the supporting tour led to James developing a bitter rivalry with one of his opening acts, Prince. Rick accused Prince of ripping off his act. 125. His fifth album, Street Songs (1981), also proved to be a crossover success. With the Temptations on background vocals, James released "Super Freak." 126. With the success of "Super Freak," James began to produce for other artists. He formed an all-girl band named the Mary Jane Girls. He also performed duets with R&B singer Teena Marie and Smokey Robinson. He also produced comedian Eddie Murphy's "Party All The Time," which was a hit in the mid-1980s. 127. James' on-stage persona was one of wild debauchery. Dressed in sequins, tight leather, high-heeled boots, and cornrows or a jheri curl, James oozed sex on stage. Offstage, he smoked marijuana and snorted cocaine. According to the Washington Post, he told the Detroit News in 2004, "The biggest mistake I made is that I tried to become my alter ego. I wanted to be Rick James, wild man, party machine, lady slayer, and the cocaine told me I could. I forgot that I was James Johnson, a nerdy kid who grew up reading Dante's Inferno on Saturday nights." 128. James' spiral out of control came to a head when he was charged with assault in 1991. He was convicted in 1993 and served three years. He vowed to get clean and live a more sedate life. Upon his release, he married and began having serious health problems. James was found dead on August 6, 2004; he was 56. His death was ruled accidental, but nine drugs were found in his system. However, the official cause of death was a heart attack. 129. Open Comments: 130. Movie Scene 131. The Wiz: A musical adventure fantasy film based upon characters from “The Wizard of OZ” featuring an all-black cast, the film was loosely adapted from the 1974 Broadway musical of the same name. It follows the adventures of Dorothy, a shy, twenty-four-year-old Harlem schoolteacher who finds herself magically transported to the urban fantasy Land of Oz, which resembles a dream version of New York City. Befriended by a Scarecrow, a Tin Man and a Cowardly Lion, she travels through the city to seek an audience with the mysterious Wiz, who they say is the only one powerful enough to send her home. 132. Various reviews: "...Diana Ross, too old to play Dorothy." and ...portrayal of Dorothy was "cold, neurotic and oddly unattractive" / "...cockamamy screenplay" / “the picture finished off Diana Ross's screen career" / "The Wiz was too scary for children, and too silly for adults." / Ray Bolger, who played the Scarecrow in the 1939 The Wizard of Oz film, did not think highly of The Wiz, stating "The Wiz is overblown and will never have the universal appeal that the classic MGM musical has obtained." 133. Sean Munger - seanmunger.com "...But, despite the fact that it was a bad movie–and it clearly is–there’s a lot of very interesting stuff about The Wiz lurking under the surface. You can make an argument that its failure ended not one but two eras in cinema: the era of the glitzy big-budget musical, and that of what is known, not entirely politically correctly (these days), as the “Blacksploitation” boom. The Wiz also began a professional association between two of its participants that had an effect on popular culture of almost inestimable magnitude: the musical pairing of Michael Jackson and songwriter/producer Quincy Jones." 134. Open Comments: 135. TV Scene 136. Maxie Cleveland "Max" Robinson, Jr. (@39yrs old): American broadcast journalist and founder of the National Association of Black Journalists 137. Robinson’s first journalism job began and ended in 1959, when he was hired to read news at a Portsmouth, Va., television station. Although the station selected him over an otherwise all-white group of applicants, it still enforced a color barrier by projecting an image of the station’s logo to conceal Robinson as he read the news. He was fired the day after he presented the news without the logo obscuring his face. In 1965 he joined WTOP-TV in Washington, D.C., as a correspondent and camera operator, but he moved quickly to nearby WRC-TV, where he won awards for coverage of race riots and a documentary on life in poor urban neighborhoods. He was hired back by WTOP as its first African American news anchor in 1969 and stayed there until 1978. Robinson moved to Chicago when ABC News chose him as one of three co-anchors for ABC’s World News Tonight. The anchor arrangement ended with the death of co-anchor Frank Reynolds in 1983. Robinson left ABC News shortly thereafter and joined Chicago’s WMAQ-TV as a news anchor (1984–87). 138. Clarence Page offered a final tribute to his friend Max Robinson in Chicago: "Some journalists are remembered for the stories they covered. Robinson will be remembered for being the story. Like Jackie Robinson, who broke baseball's color bar in 1947, Max Robinson won't be applauded for his home runs, but for the fact that he ran the bases." 139. Open Comments: 140. Week 3 in the NFL featured some… unexpected?... performances, and made for a maddening week in fantasy football. Upsets of the Vikings, Packers, Patriots and Jaguars spill over into fantasy, superflex leagues re-shuffle as two more rookies take over starting jobs, and a great young passer is lost for the season. While James recovers from an illness that may or may not be related to Baker May-fever, Travis and John break down the Week 3 learning experiences, and go through the Week 4 “Superflex SOPs” in preparation of waiver runs. Adds/drops, buys/sells, and “Next Week This Week,” and much more in the first of two episodes this week! While James was away this week, Ian discusses some of the new (and old) games he has been playing, including: Terraria, They Are Billions, and the new update for No Man's Sky. These are just some quick updates on some new releases and some oldies-but-goodies. Ian also takes a moment to talk about the tragic shooting following the Madden 2K event in Jacksonville, Florida just over a week ago. While trying not to get to political and stick to what this podcast is about, this is something that happened in our own virtual backyard. James and Ian have just been talking about video game culture, e-sports, and sports and so it seems necessary to address. If we are going to put sports and e-sports side by side and compare them, then it's easy to notice a lack of coaching and sportsmanship that can sometimes be present in online gaming communities. Does this happen all the time? No. Are most people just there to enjoy themselves and do what they love? Of course. However, it might be necessary to further promote the idea that sharing a passion with people from all over the world, who all participate in a common activity, may alone have to super cede being the best all the time. It's normal to lose at things, and gaming is no different in this regard. Agree or disagree, this is an important conversation that needs to take place now. Also, on a very different note, Ian explores Skyrim's newest addition. VR? Nope, he's done that already and it almost made him puke. This time Bethesda's really done it. They've released it on the most powerful, most accessible, most user friendly platform yet: Alexa. Thanks for listening! Later player.
At what age should you start to chase your dreams? Many people think you should get through the college years and have some life experiences before you really know what you want. But why should your dreams have those time-stamped limitations? Today’s guest shows that you’re never too young to take steps toward accomplishing big things in chasing your dreams. My guest today is James Mathew, my nephew! He is a rising sophomore at Harvard College, pursuing a degree in sociology and global health and health policy. He grew up in a paradoxical environment in the Chicago suburb of Hinsdale, Illinois. His identity as a first-generation Indian-American informs his politics and fuels his passion for social impact, empathy, and diversity. His most notable endeavors to date are Got Food?--a smartphone application that curbs the effects of domestic hunger, and 21 Colorful Crimson, a Harvard-based music group that advocates for a more inclusive America while pursuing professional success. James is staying with my family for the summer while he interns in DC and he is doing such amazing things at a young age that I knew I HAD to have him on the show. Defying the stereotypes You’ve heard the stereotypes we sometimes give to certain ethnic groups, like Indian-Americans. James grew up hearing these, too. He was a good student in math and science--like many Indian-Americans--so everyone assumed he would be a doctor. This assumption hits home to James since his mother and several other family members are also doctors. While James’ family did have expectations of his academic performance, he never felt pressured by them to fulfill a certain path in life. He actually felt more pressure from outside his family. Instead of pursuing a medical degree, James’ true passions run in the direction of music, which is also a talent that runs in his family. Music is a love that he can’t keep to himself, and he has found amazing ways to share this passion with others. TWEET: “We’re a music group of a group of friends.” @the21CC #chasingdreams Capitalizing on diversion What comes to mind when you hear the word diversity? Unfortunately, the word has a negative connotation in society today, but it shouldn’t! James is a member of the unique Class of 2021 at Harvard, the first to NOT have a clear racial majority. James wanted to capitalize on the diverse environment of his class and formed the group, 21 Colorful Crimson, out of a desire to share his passion for music. The 21 stands for their class name AND the fact that there are 21 members. The word Colorful highlights the different backgrounds and narratives of the members, who come together around the music they all love. Crimson is the mascot of Harvard. James and his fellow group members overlook and reject the divisions that society would put on them and they are all passionate about what the group stands for and the music they create. TWEET: “We look for collaboration in its most sincere form.” @the21CC #chasingdreams A healthy arrangement What can a few college students accomplish in only six months? Ask James and his fellow group members! The group began only six months ago as an idea that took shape over winter break. It took time to form the group and gather the members they needed. The group, 21 Colorful Crimson, is made up of rappers, producers, singers, artists, and more. Many of them perform individually on the side as well as in the group. They use any individual attention to shine back on the group, which has proved to be a healthy arrangement. They hope to stay together for the duration of their college career, so the possibilities are endless! They are learning as they work together, how to hear each other’s voices and opinions to better inform a collective perspective. Check out the resources below to listen to their first single, How You Gonna Hate. TWEET: “The more we work together, the more we actually hear each other’s voices.” @the21CC #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Expect people to not believe you at first. They aren’t necessarily going to buy in at first because it’s never been done before. What makes a dream is that it’s not easily attainable. You have to take risks and challenge yourself.” OUTLINE OF THE EPISODE: [:23] Defying stereotypes [6:59] What James really wants--to help people [8:59] Being open to different areas of service [10:34] The meaning of the name--21 Colorful Crimson [14:37] Keeping the love for music alive while balancing studies [17:43] The beginnings of 21 Colorful Crimson [22:29] How people believed in his dream [27:59] Building each other’s dreams [30:14] The future of the group [31:00] Their varied backgrounds and overriding friendship [35:23] The 21CC vision for the future [39:55] ONE action for a dream chaser RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE EPISODE: 21 Colorful Crimson Website 21 Colorful Crimson on Facebook 21 Colorful Crimson on Twitter James Matthew on Instagram 21 Colorful Crimson on Go Fund Me 21 Colorful Crimson on Patreon 21 Colorful Crimson on Spotify 21 Colorful Crimson on Apple Music TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: I don’t want to limit myself to one area of service, because I think there are multiple spaces in which to help people. @the21CC #chasingdreams TWEET: Long-term, I’d like to commit to a life of public service. @the21CC #chasingdreams TWEET: Helping people is a driving force and a calling on my life. @the21CC #chasingdreams

With deep ties to Bluegrass & Mountain Music, JoAnna grew up in East Kentucky listening to Bill Monroe, Patty Loveless, and Dolly Parton. While James, a local Central Kentuckian, has spent the last 30 years studying the various styles of greats such as Tony Rice, Mark Knopfker, and Jimmy Vaughn. By 1993, James were already established with a string of successful UK singles on their four previous album. But with the release of Laid, they managed to crack wide open United States college and mainstream radio playlists with the quirky and catchy title track. However, like so many albums released in the 90s, a hit single does not always represent the sound of the band overall. While James had their fair share of uptempo tunes, including the New Order-esque Say Something from the same album, with the help of our Patreon patron Patrick (of Three Bines Hopped Spirits) who picked the album, we discovered a moodier, more melancholy sound, driven by bass and atmospheric guitars. While some of that credit is probably due to legendary musician/producer Brian Eno, the band themselves unveil a unique combination of post-punk edge, folk storytelling, Madchester bounce and Brit-pop swagger. It all makes for a listen that bares repeated listens to discover the layers, which also reveal some deficiencies that grew over time. Marriage and the Family Part 3 – Episode #18 In This Episode... 01:11 – Segment 1 As a parent, we are to disciple our children/li> How does a Christian disciple unsaved children? Even unsaved, children are created in the likeness and image of God and have to be obedient. We should take an evangelistic role with our children, preaching the Gospel saved or not. We need to model the disciplines of the Christian life to our children. The motivation to get our kids to obey needs to be for God’s glory. We are not worthy of having our kids obey us. God is. Kids honor God by obeying their parents. As parents, we need to exhibit the grace that God shows us, but we need to make sure they understand there are consequences for our sin not out of anger. We need to make sure that the consequences are shown to be because of the sin, and not out of unforgiveness of the parent. 09:500 – Segment 2 The branches move onto discussing discipline of children. We cannot discipline in anger. God disciplines the ones He loves and so should we. 16:39 – Segment 3 The branches discuss making sure that your focus is on your family. This week, Anthony and James look at Anthony’s feature on the proliferation of JavaScript frameworks. They then discuss the CFTC’s announcement this week that it is going to conduct a review of its swaps data reporting rules. While James is still in England, we had a special guest help co-host the show with me this week! Evily, who was last on to talk about Dr. Strange, came back and discussed Marvel’s latest, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. We begin the show with a spoiler-free discussion, then cut to a pre-recorded message from James about the film (again, without spoilers), and come back to have a spoiler-filled chat about the film. Finally, we end with our own Last 10 Top 10 lists. You can follow Evily on Twitter and Instagram Follow Cinereelists: Facebook – Twitter Follow James:...
If one could embody charm, it might very well take the form of James Mangold - an open, warm and intelligent man who also happens to have a proven track record in delivering quite tremendous movies. His latest offering is Logan - a dark, violent and spandex-free addition to the X-Men franchise, which sees Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in the throes of existential crises. Critics love it - in part due to the director's offbeat take on a sometimes formulaic genre. And as we'll discover, offbeat is a word which applies equally to Marco Beltrami's score ... While James doesn't entirely accept the claim himself, his films have been described as eclectic. He's certainly tackled a rich variety of subject matter - from Cop Land to Girl Interrupted and the Oscar-winning Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line - with scores and soundtracks to boot. Enjoy!
Crank Journal is back for a 6th episode! While James is getting a very early start on his Halloween costume, Michael talks with former Nissan designer Bryan Thompson about his work on cars like the NV, the Armada, and the Quest, and about his splendid car collection which includes a restored 1978 Subaru DL and a 49k-mile 1988 Nissan Van survivor (yes, the ones that all got recalled by Nissan). They both name their favorite Obscure Cars for Sale posts of the week, and oh... you'll also never use the shifter in a Titan truck the same way again once you finish this episode.
Hey There Medicare Nation! Today, I'm speaking with a special guest. I'm speaking with my good friend James Van Prooyen. James recently retired from the military, where he spent twenty years in the Air Force. James didn't always want to serve in the Military. At first, James wanted to follow in his grandfather's footsteps and become an electrician. While James was a senior in High School, in Northern Michigan, he was introduced to a recruiting officer. James learned a great deal about being in the Military, and James wanted to serve - for four years! Shortly approaching his fourth year in the Air Force, James thought about his future. He had a wonderful wife and a new baby. James loved working with his Air Force family, and he decided to enlist again for four more years. Those four years soon turned into twenty, and James found himself retiring and not knowing what to do next. James kept very busy after retiring from the Air Force by helping his wife with her nutritional business and helping to take care of his daughter. James soon began networking and found himself part of the Tampa Bay Business Owners Association, and he soon learned he wanted to be an entrepreneur. James learned about Podcasting and new he wanted to have a Military Show. The Veteran's in Business Show was born! James wants the Veteran's in Business Show to be a conduit for veterans who already own a business, to guide and teach veterans who will be leaving the military in the coming year. Veteran's who want to start their own business, will learn from other veterans, who have done it before them. Resources for veteran's. James wants to make the transition easier for his brother and sister veterans. If you are a veteran business owner and would like to be interviewed on Jame's podcast..... send him an email to TheMilitaryPodcastNetwork@gmail.com If you know of a veteran who would love to learn how to start their own business, tell them to listen to the Veteran's in Business Show with James Van Prooyen. Adventures in Businessing: Entrepreneurship, Small Business, and a Healthy Dose of Humor
In this episode (after James pours a massive Jack'n'Coke) the guys ease into things by briefly discussing what they've been working on... Kevin slips on the developer management shoes, as the WP Ninjas trial a potential hire. Kenny learns from his coding philosophy mistakes on a big project. (Spoiler: Communication saved the day.) Jon gets support savvy, while beginning to march to the beat of JavaScript. While James has been figure-heading support, piercing issues like spearfishing goblin sharks right in their ugly mugs. Then as a special treat for you, the crew delivers a double-feature, two topic episode! Support Breaking down WP Ninjas renewed focus on support. The immediate (monetary) fruits of that labor. The near instant change in customer tone. "As support goes, so to does sales." Hiring Best practices. Biggest mistakes. How we think about hiring. When do you hire? How do you know it’s the right time. Have you properly budgeted for a new hire? It’s all about “Attitude, then aptitude.” Ask yourself the following about your potential hire... “Do they get it, do they want it, do they have the capacity to do it?” Hire for the person, not the position. How you can apply this to your company. Special thanks to the CrashJonesBand for providing us with our theme music. No One Can Tell You How To Live by CrashJonesBand
This week on StoryWeb: Ernest Gaines’s short story “The Sky Is Gray.” I was first introduced to southern literature in 1978, when I was a first-year university student in Martha Baker’s Honors Writing class. The course focused on southern writers. I had no idea at the time that I would go on to become a scholar of southern literature or to write A Southern Weave of Women: Fiction of the Contemporary South. All I knew in the fall of 1978 was that I loved the literature Martha had us read: Eudora Welty, Carson McCullers, Flannery O’Connor, Alice Walker, and of course, William Faulkner. I was especially struck by Ernest Gaines’s moody, but compelling, short story “The Sky Is Gray,” so much so that the story has stuck with me for nearly forty years. Later, like many readers, I would come to associate Gaines most closely with his 1971 novel, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. Later still he’d gain an even larger audience with his 1983 novel, A Gathering of Old Men, and especially his 1993 novel, A Lesson Before Dying, which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and won the National Books Critics Circle Award. But it was “The Sky Is Gray” that first drew me in and that still evokes a certain atmosphere in my mind. The narrator is James, an eight-year-old black boy living in rural Louisiana. The unrelenting cold and hunger he experiences throughout the story stay with me so many years later. For the sky is, indeed, gray in this story. James and his mother, Octavia, set out for the town near them, take the bus so that the boy can have a tooth pulled. They are headed to Bayonne, a town in Louisiana where they can get services like the dentist but not nearly as large as Baton Rouge, where the boy has also traveled. Octavia heads the household now that her husband has left to serve in World War II. But the sky is gray not just because of the cold and sleet but also because James and Octavia must confront Bayonne during the pre-Civil Rights era of World War II. Small-town Louisiana is harshly marked by Jim Crow laws, which keep them out of restaurants and force them to walk the town’s streets in the grim weather as they wait for the dentist’s office to reopen after lunch. While James witnesses an extended conversation in the dentist’s waiting room between a black preacher and a young student about the right way to challenge (or not challenge) the racist social system, the lessons he learns from his mother are even more pronounced. As they walk the streets of Bayonne, his mother conveys to him – nearly without words – how to act so as to defer to the Jim Crow system and at the same time stand up straight and proudly in the face of it. In the story’s famous ending, James pulls his coat collar up around his neck to block out the cold. His mother admonishes him, telling him to wear the coat properly. “You not a bum,” she says. “You a man.” Gaines’s prose is stark, spare, unrelenting in its precision and honesty. Where The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman gives us a grand, sweeping epic of a black woman and her slave community, “The Sky Is Gray” zeroes in on a moment in time, one crucial afternoon in a black child’s development. Regardless of the scope, however, Gaines forces us to consider the personal in the historical. What was it like to be a slave and move into “freedom” and eventually into the Civil Rights Movement? The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman will tell you. What is it like to be a black boy coming into awareness of the way his dark skin, his “race,” marks him as other? “The Sky Is Gray” will give you insights into that. Gaines published “The Sky Is Gray” in 1963 when he was thirty and then included it in his 1968 volume of short stories, Bloodline. Here, as elsewhere, Gaines writes about the world he knew intimately from his upbringing. A fifth-generation descendant of plantation slaves, he grew up on the River Lake plantation in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana, where he set most of his fiction. Though Gaines had limited schooling while living in Louisiana, his family’s move to California exposed him to greater education and to a passionate exploration of the library. As one source says, “Gaines sought books about Southern blacks, but found few, and decided, ‘If the book you want doesn't exist, you try to make it exist.’” Gaines has been a MacArthur Foundation fellow, held a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship, and been awarded the National Humanities Medal. An excellent biography and overview of Gaines’s work can be found at the Academy of Achievement website; an interview – with transcript and video clips – is also available at the Academy of Achievement. The Missouri Review offers an insightful interview with Gaines. For more resources, visit the Ernest J. Gaines Center at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Finally, you might want to read an article about Gaines’s return to Louisiana, where he now lives on part of the plantation where he and his ancestors lived. There’s also a great CNN piece on his return to Louisiana. Visit thestoryweb.com/gaines for links to all these resources and to listen as Ernest Gaines reads the ending lines from “The Sky Is Gray.” You can also watch a 1979 film adaptation of the short story. Finally, take some time to watch as Ernest Gaines talks about his background and discusses his novel A Lesson Before Dying (part of the National Endowment for the Arts’ program The Big Read).

While James makes educated guesses, Mark assumes everything is a tampon ... and he is wrong every time. James also can't hear a word that contains "gonad" without laughing like a 12-year-old. Today James and Claudia host expert book promoter Michael Drew. While James is a huge proponent of self-publishing he wanted Michael to explain to you the other side of the story. According to Michael, self published books, right or wrong will never make The New York Times bestselling book list. With an impressive track record, which “80 books out of 80 books onto national bestseller lists”, is THE authority on how to turn your book into a bestseller. He knows all the tricks and while you may not think they’re fair, they are what they are. “Creating a best seller is 90% knowledge, secrets and timing, and only about 10% great book. The crazy thing…very few people in the publishing industry understand that.”
