Since 1982 Rick Zwetsch, a lifelong cyclist, has been a fan of Race Across America and the ultra-cyclists who take on this grueling ride – touted as the world’s toughest bike race. After being asked many times over the years if he would ever attempt it… one day, at age 60, he surprised himself—and h…

Well, Mother Nature was no friend to any racer during the 2021 Race Across the West. Record breaking heat in the desert cut Team Z Cycling's race short about 30 miles from Parker, AZ. The highest temperature we saw was 137 degrees. During the day temps ranged from 105-120 and at night from 90-100 degrees. Rick was ready physically and mentally. The crew was prepared and knew what to expect on the course. Except for the heat. Rick wasn't eating according to the plan and didn't feel like eating much. Hydration was good but Rick never felt hydrated as evidenced by infrequency of nature breaks. Water retention was going to be a problem. With roughly 680 miles to go into temperatures that were not forecast to come down – a decision was made to focus on racer and crew safety and stop the race. This decision was also made because, based on our current race progress, it was highly unlikely we would finish by the cut-off time of 92 hours. Listen in to last minute conversations with crew member Jen Orr (overall 2019 RAW winner), crew chief Steve Barraco and Caryn and Rick as they talk about the race. While extremely disappointing for sure…we're all very proud of our efforts to get to the start line and be in the race! What does an endurance athlete, police officer and Black woman do when her various identities collide with a national tragedy, all while she’s training for the Police Unity Tour in honor of fallen officers? If she’s Alisha Zellner, she pedals her full-self into the forefront of critical social justice conversations by bringing her local community together to ride bikes and begin a conversation on the issues that impact her life and the lives of so many others. Join us as Alisha discusses what it’s like to live at the intersection of her sometimes contradictory identities, what she’s doing to help through her organization Bike Ride for Black Lives, and of course, about her cycling and triathlon plans for the coming year. In this candid and fun conversation, Alisha shares a number of very practical ideas for how we can all work to make the sport we love so much more inclusive—including something you’re already doing…riding your bike! What a treat! Our first in-person episode since the pandemic and what incredible guests to help us ease back toward “normal.” Heath Saffer and Omar Baloch are riding their bikes across the country raising money and awareness of teen suicide in memory of their friend, Devon Rubenstein. Heath and Omar’s path brought them through Longmont where Rick and Caryn caught up with them about their friend, the nonprofit they are supporting and, of course…bikes! From snow-covered passes to the windy roads of Wyoming to a beautiful sunset while riding down Colorado’s Front Range, these two twenty-somethings are having the adventure of a lifetime, and we are happy to showcase their efforts in honor of Mental Health Awareness month. After a quick catch-up on Rick’s Race Across the West training, 10 Buck Bike Club, and a smattering of other appetizers, we get to this episode’s main course—an interview with 2021 Bessies Creek 12-hour winner, Adam Ashwill. Adam’s been a part of the ultra-cycling scene for years as his family hosts the infamous Race Across America Time Station 30 in Fort Scott, KS. Inspired by the racers and crews coming through town each summer, Adam decided to give this whole long-distance riding thing a try and has made quite the splash in his first couple years. Despite being new to the sport (or perhaps because of it), he offers remarkably wise and important advice for those who are just getting started, while giving those who have been grinding the gears for decades a reminder of the enthusiasm and energy of their early racing days. Welcome to the podcast, Michael Davies-Hughes. Our most quotable guest to date, Michael and Rick talk about how Michael caught the ultra-cycling bug and what drove him to give Race Across America a try. Spoiler alert – Michael didn’t quite finish his rookie RAAM attempt, but the lessons he and his crew learned along the way will be useful to anyone attempting their first or thirty-first ultra-event. While he was ready to be back to leverage his lessons in Race Across America 2020, Michael—along with all 2020 RAAM and RAW racers—had to put his plans on hold. Find out his thoughts on this year’s race season, where he’s headed next and his thoughts on the most challenging aspect of racing RAAM. When life gives you lemons, make a virtual 3,000+ mile bike race out of thin air! As you know by now, the 2020 Race Across America and Race Across the West have been cancelled due to our shared global pandemic, which got Anthony Gordon thinking… As a documentary film-maker who suddenly found himself out of a project (documenting Rupert Guinness’ RAAM attempt), Anthony set to work on creating a virtual race experience for Rupert, other RAAM and RAW racers, and anyone who wants to give this whole ultra-endurance cycling thing a go. Anthony and Rick discuss how Anthony activated his network – and added to it partnering with the RAAM team, FulGaz and more – to put people (back) to work building out routes, registration, tracking, media and all of the components of an online race experience. After Rick’s chat with Anthony, he and Caryn talk about their takeaways from the interview and what this new online option means for Rick’s 2020 RAW plans, and they also begin making plans to have Anthony back on the podcast down the road – yep, he’s that interesting of a guy! In an interview ranging from Jo’s incredible cycling story (it includes lots of pizza and Chinese food) to how she ultimately used food to rebuild her body and life from the ground up (less pizza and Chinese food!), the two discuss how ultra-endurance athletes can gear up their nutrition game. She shares ideas for small (and more significant) changes that cyclists and crew members can make to enhance their ultra-endurance experiences, sustain energy and feel better in challenging conditions. Jo also outlines how the Conscious Cleanse and its fantastic community can provide a great jump start to learning which foods best fuel each person’s unique body. Jo’s engaging style and flexible approach to using nutrition to properly fuel your body make this interview one not to be missed. We suspected it was coming—and are confident the decision is the right one—yet somehow it was still a rough moment when we got the final word that the 2020 Race Across the West and Race Across America were cancelled. In this Quick Release episode, Rick and Caryn touch base about the race organizer’s challenging decision to cancel, Rick and our crew’s reactions, and what this means for Rick and our podcast going forward – all within a context of many unknowns due to our country’s response to the coronavirus. Spoiler alert: there’s a RAW alternative in the works for this June!! It’s been over three weeks since our last episode and when you listen, you’ll see why. Of course, we’re right there alongside all of you scrambling to make things work during this unprecedented time of COVID-19. As Rick’s crew chief, Steve Barraco recently commented, “I thought we’d be dealing with a minor crash, a van breaking down or getting off course. But none of us could have predicted or can control this!” To top that off all that’s happening COVID-19-wise, we’ve had a few personal things going on as well. In this Quick Release episode, we’ll catch you up on what’s happening with Rick’s training, crew and fundraising, as well as share what we know about plans for Race Across America and Race Across the West in the midst of our shared new and ever-changing landscape. With just over 100 days until Race Across the West, Rick and Caryn check in on Rick’s training, crew, fundraising and race prep. What are we focused on? What’s on our minds? And, why are we so tired?! Then in our second segment – driven by listener questions – we’ll share a bit more about our lives, hobbies, work and our days outside of the RAW/RAAM experience. The #1 question we’re asked about this journey is, “how can I help?” Our community is coming through big-time with offers to support training, follow-vehicle practice and crewing for Race Across the West, as well as offers to donate. Until now, we haven’t had a clear sense of what everything will cost. In this episode, Rick and Caryn talk through the RAW budget and the variety of ways that our listeners can pitch in to make this dream a reality. Help us kick our fundraising off with a bang by listening, contributing and sharing this episode widely. Thanks in advance! Join us for the first of our shorter, more concise episodes where we get laser focused on one subject! As we’ve been recording each episode, thinking about future episodes and well just talking about this stuff amongst ourselves and with others we realized there are a LOT of exercise, training and racing acronyms and terms that some listening may not be familiar with. Certainly, cyclists and ultra-cyclists will be in the know but others new to cycling or family and friends may be scratching their heads thinking, what the heck are all these terms and acronyms they’re using? Listen in and we’ll explain some of what we’re talking about! Last time we talked with Jen Orr about her experiences riding Race Across the West. Now listen in as Caryn picks the brain of three-time RAW crew member, Brandy Ingels. Brandy served on the crew for her husband, Jason Ingels’ three RAW attempts, including as crew chief for his successful 2019 race. In this episode, you’ll learn how Rick and Caryn came to know Brandy and Jason and the role they played in Rick’s first ultra-cycling race. Brandy also shares the inside scoop on planning for and crewing RAW including things to consider, what makes a crew work, her thoughts on budgeting and fundraising, and why she dedicates her and her family’s time to Jason’s cycling pursuits. This is a must listen for aspiring and even experience crew members. Athletes, listen in, too…you’re bound to gain a better understanding of what your crew goes through while you’re pedaling away toward your goals. Jen Orr is an accomplished triathlete turned ultra-cyclist. She made the switch with a bang taking first place overall (female) solo and setting a course record at the 2018 6-12-24 Hour World Time Trial Championships and leading the way to first place overall (male or female) solo in 2019 Race Across the West (RAW). Rick and Jen served together on Seana Hogan’s 2018 record-setting Race Across America (RAAM) crew wanting to see what it takes to get an athlete across the country and to the finish line as they both contemplated future RAW and RAAM attempts. How (and why) did Jen make the shift to ultra-cycling? What makes her successful? What challenges does she face? What advice does she have for Rick as he stares down 5.5 months to his RAW attempt and what is she thinking about as she prepares for RAAM this June? Ride along as Rick and Jen discuss these topics and more in this engaging and inspiring interview. In this special, extended episode, Rick talks to his coach and ultra-cycling legend, Marko Baloh. They chat about Marko’s storied cycling and coaching career, how he decided to take on Rick (a 60+, rookie ultra-cyclist) as a client, his hopes/expectations for his clients, and where he’ll be racing in 2020. Like Rick and Caryn, Marko and his wife, Irma, balance the complementary worlds of ultra-cyclist and support crew, and he talks about the role of this relationship in his—and any ultra-cyclists’—success. To gear up for Marko, Caryn and Rick talk about why they work with coaches, how they each chose their coach and things to think about when picking a coach. Now that Rick is freshly qualified for Race Across America, and plans to race it in June of 2021, how will he spend the next year and a half? Caryn and Rick will talk through his big picture plans for 2020 including races, training, planning and raising money for RAAM—and how to fit all of this into their already full lives. In the episode’s “Everyday Item,” we’ll share how you can learn more about ultra-cycling races and get involved in this endurance community. While Rick’s on the course turning his pedals, the crew is working behind the scenes to make sure everything’s on track, anticipating Rick’s needs and trying to take care of our own. In this episode, we’ll share Caryn’s race report, and talk with crewmate, Dan Pfister who has a unique perspective as a first-time crew member and long-time cycling friend.
As we make our way back to our home in Colorado, we’ll let you in on how the race went and whether Rick qualified for Race Across America. No spoiler alerts here. You’ll need to listen and find out the answer as Rick and Caryn chat along the course, in the car on the way home and, in our longer conversation, debrief the race where Rick will share what happened, what worked and what could be changed in the future from the (very tired) rider perspective. (Not to worry, next episode will include a crew debrief so you’ll get to hear how Caryn and Dan fared, as well!) On today’s episode, Rick and Caryn are en route to and getting ready for the Texas Time Trials where Rick will attempt to ride 503 miles in 48 hours to qualify for Race Across America. Caryn will be joined by our friend and first time crew member, Dan Pfister, as we prep to support Rick on this journey. We’re introducing diary segments in this episode where you will get a brief inside look into what Caryn and Rick are thinking and doing leading up to the drive to Texas. We’ll also offer an “everyday item” where we’ll chat about the process of getting ready as we run errands the morning before race day. For our longer conversation we talk about the Texas Time Trials and the Tejas 500, the course, weather predictions, Rick’s race strategy and what Caryn’s plans are for helping him get across the finish line. Nerves are up and we hope that wheels will stay down over the days to come. Ride along! produced by Amanda Roscoe Mayo
Welcome to our podcast focused on our experiences as a couple working together to get Rick across the finish line of Race Across America in 2021. In this episode we set the stage for the podcasts to come by introducing you to us: Rick Zwetsch, a 60-something recreational cyclist turned ultra-cyclist and Caryn Capriccioso, his life partner, business partner and now beginner ultra-cycling crew member. Using a conversational format, Rick and Caryn talk through what made Rick decide to tackle ultra-cycling at this stage in his life, why we started this podcast, and then share an overview of Race Across America – the history, the stats and what to expect from today’s RAAM.
