Would you describe your child as passive, quiet around others, uncomfortable in social situations, a child that avoids eye contact, and maybe hesitates to try new things? Does your child excessively rehearse what they want to say or how they want to behave? Some parents may wonder if this is shyness or something more. Is it social anxiety? Today, we're digging into the topic of both. Is it shyness or social anxiety and how do you know? And what can we do to help? Dr. Fran Walfish is an absolute expert in this field and in our conversation today, she not only offers some clarification on the differences between shyness and social anxiety, but also shares things we can do to support these children better and when to seek professional help and guidance. She is a wealth of knowledge and I am thrilled for you to hear our conversation. Show Notes: [3:21] - First, shyness is an innate trait. It's something human beings are born with. A child comes into the world already predisposed with a particular temperament. [4:42] - Shyness can sometimes look like anxiety. There are so many ingredients that shape a person's personality and behavior. [6:36] - The child should be the one to dictate the comfort level, rather than it being driven by the parent's fear of embarrassment or shame due to the child's shyness. [8:31] - Certain things can lead to social anxiety. [10:20] - Not all shy people have social anxiety. [12:11] - Well-meaning parents may feel embarrassed or exceedingly worried about a child's shyness. [14:37] - Selective mutism is a confusing presentation of social anxiety. [16:58] - It is crucial for parents not to pressure kids. It could lead to them withholding even more. [19:12] - The parent who is trying to discern the difference between social anxiety and shyness needs to be non-judgmental. [21:35] - Create some reasonable separation and assure your child that you are there. [23:01] - Just like adults, children want to be seen, acknowledged, validated and accepted - flaws and all. [24:40] - What can parents and teachers do to help children with social anxiety? Dr. Walfish shares some tips. [26:25] - Expect some successes and failures. [31:21] - If parents see their child crying and sobbing in most social situations, it is time to search for a referral. Devin Mann is an agent at William Morris Endeavor Entertainment, but isn’t your typical talent agent. His personal life has thrown him curve balls that would crush anyone. Having disabled twins, the grief of losing one at age 2, and divorcing his alcoholic wife were all devastating, yet Devin still learns, adapts, and shines. Devin comes from a family of writers and grew up surrounded by politics in Washington, DC. As a student at Columbia University, he was influenced by music and got into the art scene. In 1992, Devin moved to Los Angeles to get into the film business. With no connections, he struggled and took a job selling children’s books (which he admits to being terrible at). He got his break when he was hired at Island Records, then moved on to a commercial production company, then eventually to freelance work. After considering his options, he took an inventory of his skills and decided that he was best at speaking for people who didn’t have a voice. He applied to 100 agencies landing a job as an agent in training at a small firm in West LA. Two years later, Smith, Gosnell, Nicholson & Associates hired him away as did Innovative Artists a couple of years later. At the end of his 7-year contract, he was approached by Endeavor and has been there for 12 years. Now, he is a co-chair of his department with 9 agents and 9 assistants representing over 300 people. Devin met the love of his life via Yahoo Dating and lives in Los Angeles. They have 2 children from previous marriages.

How did a small concert with a very checkered past, get booked in the LARGE Boardwalk Hall? Was it sharp negotiating by the producer? Was it the lack of concert savvy by the CRDA? Or was it something else? Listen to the ACprimetime Radio Podcast. We talk with Amanda Thomas of Boardwalk Entertainment. Amanda Thomas of Boardwalk Entertainment Michael Salvanto of Songbird Entertainment teamed up with North Jersey cousin Nick Conti to present a Boardwalk Hall concert on Saturday, November 11, 2017. The line-up is WAR, Asia featuring John Payne, and Journey former lead vocalist, Steve Augeri. This show was originally slated for Bader Field. But that fizzled. The triple-bill was also scheduled to take place in Wildwood, but was cancelled at the last minute. Who's at fault? What's the real reason for the cancellation? Wildwood commissioner Pete Byron, said he was 'kept in the dark' about the status of the Songbird Entertainment concert, produced by Michael Salvanto. Salvanto's explanation of past concert mis-steps were smoothed over on WOND Radio on Thursday afternoon. But many listeners weren't buying what Salvanto & the fast-talking, radio host were selling. More fact checking to follow. Back on March 22, 2017, Atlantic City Council voted to give Songbird Entertainment a license to use Bader Field for 5 concerts. None of those planned shows happened. 3rd ward Atlantic City Councilman Kaleem Shabazz was not happy with the Salvanto experience. Snookered? Hoodwinked? Bamboozled? Or just poor vetting and escrow terms / conditions on part of the city? Some were pleasantly surprised, others were downright shocked... that Salvanto & Songbird Entertainment were able to procure the 12,000 seat main arena of Boardwalk Hall for this cool....but really small show that might sell 3,000 tix. Might is the operative word here. Are Bar Mitzvahs next at Boardwalk Hall? How did this smaller show get OK'ed to play the BIG room at Boardwalk Hall? A show that was already cancelled 2 times before. A sign of things to come for Boardwalk Hall? The CRDA is desperate to do ANYTHING with Boardwalk Hall? Not ONE person at the CRDA thought this smelled kinda funny? Bringing in a wider variety of shows, producers and promoters. Less reliance on the expensive & questionable ROI deal with concert promoter Live Nation? With all that CRDA money being poured into Boardwalk Hall repairs & upgrades, it's time for that great venue to be managed & run as a visitor & revenue driver.....not just a CRDA money pit & pet project that keeps running in the red. Maybe the CRDA should have allocated some of those Boardwalk Hall funds....to safety & crime reduction in that Florida Ave neighborhood? Concert co-producer Nick Conti, plans to open Choice Bar n Grill soon at 470 Albany Ave in Atlantic City. (across from Skate Zone) Selvanto says: “that if it wasn’t with the help of Nick Conti, and Choice Bar & Grill, this concert would not be possible. Conti is a long time resident of Atlantic City, and business owner. NOTE: The CRDA board of the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority recently inked a $7 Million deal to attract larger events to Boardwalk Hall and the Convention Center. The CRDA will team with Comcast NBC-Universal and William Morris Endeavor Entertainment to bring “destination events” to the two properties. Spectra by Comcast Spectacor, the company that manages Boardwalk Hall, has recently snubbed the local Yellow Cab Company & Jitney drivers. Spectra named Lyft its official ride-sharing service.
