The Ultimate Quest by Dr. Antonio Mataban is an epic historical fiction that spans five generations, beginning at the tail end of the Spanish colonial era in the Philippines. Dr. Mataban's narrative sweeps through time, immersing readers in the lives of characters whose personal journeys intertwine with the shifting tides of history, offering a rich tapestry of culture, struggle, and triumph.Set against the backdrop of a nation in transition, the novel masterfully captures the intricacies of Filipino identity, societal change, and the impact of historical events. From the waning days of Spanish rule to the complex, post-colonial era, Dr. Mataban deftly explores the personal and political conflicts that shaped the Philippines' evolution. His portrayal of the era is vivid, grounding the characters' experiences in real historical events, yet the author also crafts a compelling fictional narrative that keeps readers invested in the human side of history. The book's structure, spanning five generations, provides a panoramic view of the impact of time on individuals and families. Each character is deeply developed, their lives shaped not only by their personal desires but also by the political and social forces at play. This generational scope allows Dr. Mataban to explore the long-term effects of colonialism, revolution, and independence, showing how history is passed down through families and how the scars of the past continue to influence the future. One of the standout aspects of The Ultimate Quest is Dr. Mataban's ability to blend historical facts with compelling storytelling. The attention to historical detail is impressive, and the author's research shines through, adding depth to the plot without overwhelming the reader with unnecessary exposition. The book doesn't just recount events; it brings them to life, placing readers right in the middle of the action, whether it's a struggle for independence or a personal confrontation with the legacy of colonialism. While the historical context is rich and vital, the real strength of The Ultimate Quest lies in its characters. The author's skillful development of multi-generational storylines offers a nuanced understanding of how deeply the past shapes the future. Dr. Antonio AB Mataban, was Philippine born and had witnessed the events of World War II as he grew up in the farming area. After graduating from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, he briefly practiced in the Island before migrating to the United States for further training in Urology. He soon practiced his art in Long Island, New York and after four years joined the Air Force from which he retired after 21 years, a colonel, as Urologist and Flight Surgeon. He further served our veterans for another 14 years before retiring with his family in California with his wife, Lourdes-Patria, of 63 years. Episode 100: Miguel Gandelman. This man is the Musical Director behind Bad Bunny's Super Bowl Halftime Show, one of the biggest and most complex live television performances in the world. Miguel Gandelman aka "Miga" is a Berklee graduate and longtime force in live TV and touring. He has worked with some of the biggest artists on the planet including Christina Aguilera, Stevie Wonder, Usher, Shakira, Lady Gaga, Janet Jackson, Jonat Brothers, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Babyface, John Mayer, Aretha Franklin, served as Music Director for The Masked Singer, and was a member of The Tonight Show Band with Rickey Minor. In this episode, he breaks down how the Super Bowl Halftime Show was built from the ground up in just one month. From getting the call to stepping onto the biggest stage in entertainment, we talk about how you prepare a 15 minute performance seen by over 100 million people. What goes into building a show at that level? What does music direction actually mean on a production of this scale? We discuss arranging for stadiums, working with an artist who had never used a musical director before, leading world class musicians, handling live TV pressure, and translating an artist's vision into a global moment. We also dive into his journey from growing up in a musical family in Brazil to becoming one of the most trusted Musical Directors in the industry, and the mindset required to operate at the highest level of live performance. If you have ever wondered how massive live shows and television actually come together, this conversation is a masterclass. Hope you enjoy my conversation with the great saxophonist, programmer, musical director, and human, Miga. Hello music lovers, and welcome to another edition of Why Music Matters. I'm your host, music journalist and musician Jeff Miers. Today, my guests represent a cross-generational journey through the ever-evolving world of jazz.  Alex McArthur is a singer and storyteller whose resume reads like that of a musician three times her age. A winner of multiple JazzBuffalo Vocalist of the Year awards, Alex brings a distinct soulfulness to any music she lends her voice to, whether she's singing something she wrote herself, or flexing her interpretive muscles on the works of legends like Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, and Mavis Staples.  Alex is joined today by a man who has acted as a significant mentor in her musical journey.  Pianist George Caldwell is credited by Alex as, quote, “the first person I ever attempted to sing jazz in front of, and the person who encouraged me to explore vocal jazz and improvisation in the first place.”  In his role as Director of the Student Jazz Ensembles and Music Piano Performance Instructor at the University at Buffalo, George has employed his decades of experience as a Grammy-winning professional musician to help mold the musical imaginations of countless young artists-in-the-making.  Those decades of experience include tenures with the Count Basie Orchestra, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, tap dancer and choreographer Saivon Glover, R&B legend Ruth Brown, and right here in Buffalo, the awe-inspiring Star People, a Miles Davis Repertory Ensemble.  Currently, Alex and George are in the midst of performing Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill, a recreation of Billie Holiday's final performance, with Alex inhabiting the role of Lady Day, and George acting as Musical Director.  The show, a MusicalFare production, is running at Shea's Smith Theatre in Buffalo's Theatre and Entertainment District, through February 15. (You can learn more about the production and purchase tickets through musicalfare.com.)  Welcome to Why Music Matters, Alex McArthur and George Caldwell!

This time our host and Musical Director, David Hill, is joined by BBC Radio 3's Linton Stephens to talk about six of Bach's most famous pieces. Along the way they tackle musical taboos (why can't most classical musicians improvise?), classical music wrangles (did Bach actually write the Toccata and Fugue?), and great stories (why did Bach once threaten a bassoonist with a sword?). Plus, we hear from some of our friends - including superstar organist and broadcaster Anna Lapwood - about their favourite Bach pieces.Want to see the video version of this podcast? THIS SPECIAL EPISODE introduces “WHAT'S UP!”, my new compilation album featuring 10 of my recent singles. The songs run the gamut from instrumentals to a few vocals, and they cross genres from Jazz to Rock to Pop and Fusion. This episode features excerpts from the songs.“Rough Rider” captures a cool, 1960s, Spaghetti Western kind of vibe. You can almost picture Clint Eastwood giving it to the bad guys.“Day At The Races” is a fun, upbeat number that reflects the thrills and chills of the racetrack.“The Rich Ones All Stars” features 8 World Class musicians who were all guests on this podcast: Billy Cobham (drums), Randy Brecker (flugelhorn), John Helliwell (sax), Pat Coil (piano), Peter Tiehuis (guitar), Antonio Farao (keys), Elliott Randall (guitar) and David Amram (pennywhistle).“Lovely Girlie” is a fun, upbeat vocal song featuring John Helliwell of Supertramp on sax and Tony Carey of Rainbow on the organ.“Moon Shot” is a firey Jazz Rock Fusion number featuring 5x Grammy winner Mark Lettieri of Snarky Puppy and The Fearless Flyers on guitar solo.“The Cut Of The Knife” is my homage to jazz legend Dave Brubeck and his hit song “Take Five”, and it features Kerry Marx of the Grand Ole Opry band on guitar solo.“Sostice” is a sax driven number that was going to be called “Solstice” until my engineer screwed up the spelling and I loved the nonsense word that he came up with.“Saturday Morning” is the other vocal song in the collection. It's a positive, upbeat song with a reggae beat about the pleasures that we get from everyday events in our lives.“Lou's Blues” is my Jazz Fusion tone poem. I wrote it in the studio and we recorded it in one take.“The Gift” took my love song ballad and was transformed by Michael Abene, Grammy winning arranger, into a big band samba. That's me and my band mates as the rhythm section.Thank you for listening to this podcast, and to my music. She frequently commissions and champions new works. Her playing can be heard in the 2005 movie “Bee Season” starring Richard Gere and Juliette Binoche. One of her newest projects in “I'm Nobody! Who Are You?”, an Emily Dickinson setting for unaccompanied women's choir. And she's scoring a documentary film about a Holocaust survivor. My featured song is “Tree Of Life” from the album PGS 7 by my band Project Grand Slam.
