Adam Holzman is an innovative keyboardist, composer, and musical director best known for his extensive work with jazz legend Miles Davis and progressive rock icon Steven Wilson. Blending his deep understanding of jazz harmonies with heavy progressive rock and electronic textures, Adam has become a highly sought-after sonic architect, renowned for his cutting-edge synthesizer solos and dynamic soundscapes. Beyond his high-profile touring work—which includes a pivotal tenure as Miles Davis’s musical director —Adam has released numerous acclaimed solo albums, fronts his own jazz-rock group Brave New World, and is a founding member of the prog-fusion supergroup Trifecta. Divinity Roxx is a 2x Grammy nominated spectacular bass player. Divi has two sides to her professionally. On the one hand she's been the bassist and musical director for Beyoncé. And she tours with Victor Wooten, one of my favorite bass players of all time. Her music combines funk, hip hop and rock. On the other hand she's into children's books and music. Her compositions have been adapted into children's books by Scholastic Magazine and featured on television and in the theater. She wrote a new work for the Peter Rabbit franchise and she co-wrote, produced and performed the theme song for the Emmy-nominated PBS Kids' show, Lyla In The Loop. My featured song is “Too The Zoo”. Eric Jacobsen is a renowned cellist who is also the Music Director of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. He is known for combining fresh interpretations of traditional works with cutting-edge collaborations across musical genres. If I've got this right he's also the Music Director of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and the Principal Guest Conductor of the Classical Tahoe Musical Festival. Eric is also the artistic director and co-founder of The Knights, an adventurous NYC-based chamber orchestra. Their current endeavors include a residency at Carnegie Hall. Hello music lovers, and welcome to another edition of Why Music Matters. I'm your host, music journalist and musician Jeff Miers. Today, my guests represent a cross-generational journey through the ever-evolving world of jazz. Alex McArthur is a singer and storyteller whose resume reads like that of a musician three times her age. A winner of multiple JazzBuffalo Vocalist of the Year awards, Alex brings a distinct soulfulness to any music she lends her voice to, whether she's singing something she wrote herself, or flexing her interpretive muscles on the works of legends like Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, and Mavis Staples. Alex is joined today by a man who has acted as a significant mentor in her musical journey. Pianist George Caldwell is credited by Alex as, quote, “the first person I ever attempted to sing jazz in front of, and the person who encouraged me to explore vocal jazz and improvisation in the first place.” In his role as Director of the Student Jazz Ensembles and Music Piano Performance Instructor at the University at Buffalo, George has employed his decades of experience as a Grammy-winning professional musician to help mold the musical imaginations of countless young artists-in-the-making. Those decades of experience include tenures with the Count Basie Orchestra, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, tap dancer and choreographer Saivon Glover, R&B legend Ruth Brown, and right here in Buffalo, the awe-inspiring Star People, a Miles Davis Repertory Ensemble. Currently, Alex and George are in the midst of performing Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill, a recreation of Billie Holiday's final performance, with Alex inhabiting the role of Lady Day, and George acting as Musical Director. This is an Encore Presentation of my October 2021 interview with Joey Dee, star of Joey Dee and the Starlighters. Joey wrote and sang “The Peppermint Twist”, a #1 song in 1962 that became part of the worldwide “twist” dance craze phenomenon. He and the band were the house band at The Peppermint Lounge in NYC, where people lined up each night to get in to rub elbows with the stars of that era including Jackie Kennedy, Judy Garland and John Wayne. Inbal Segev is a virtuoso Israeli-American cellist. She has been characterized as “a cellist with something to say”. She's performed with the Helsinki, Dallas and London orchestras among many others. She frequently commissions and champions new works. Her playing can be heard in the 2005 movie “Bee Season” starring Richard Gere and Juliette Binoche. One of her newest projects in “I'm Nobody! Who Are You?”, an Emily Dickinson setting for unaccompanied women's choir. Shawn Okpebholo is a Grammy Nominated Nigerian-American classical composer. He combines his classical training with his African roots. His music has been described as “devastatingly beautiful” and “fresh, new and fearless”. He was named 2024 Chicagoan Of The Year in classical music. He's won numerous awards. His music has involved themes of Negro Spirituals and stories of enslaved resistance and resilience. He's had commissions from the Chicago Symphony, the United States Air Force and others. Terry Gibbs is a legendary jazz vibraphonist. He's 100 years young. He played with most of the greats in jazz music beginning in the Bebop era of the 1940s, including Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Charlie “Bird” Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. He's won 3 major jazz polls, and he's recorded 65 albums, his last when he was 94. My featured song is not one of mine in this instance. Robert Pinsky is a Rock Star Poet! He's the 3x United States Poet Laureate. He's won many awards and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. As Poet Laureate he created the “Favorite Poem Project” where everyday Americans would select and read poems they admired by the greats including Emily Dickinson and Langston Hughes. He's performed with Bruce Springsteen and performed poetry with world class jazz musicians. And he was featured on “The Simpsons”.
