This is an Encore Presentation of my October 2021 interview with Joey Dee, star of Joey Dee and the Starlighters. Joey wrote and sang “The Peppermint Twist”, a #1 song in 1962 that became part of the worldwide “twist” dance craze phenomenon. He and the band were the house band at The Peppermint Lounge in NYC, where people lined up each night to get in to rub elbows with the stars of that era including Jackie Kennedy, Judy Garland and John Wayne. Terry Gibbs is a legendary jazz vibraphonist. He's 100 years young. He played with most of the greats in jazz music beginning in the Bebop era of the 1940s, including Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Charlie “Bird” Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. He's won 3 major jazz polls, and he's recorded 65 albums, his last when he was 94. My featured song is not one of mine in this instance. Robert Pinsky is a Rock Star Poet! He's the 3x United States Poet Laureate. He's won many awards and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. As Poet Laureate he created the “Favorite Poem Project” where everyday Americans would select and read poems they admired by the greats including Emily Dickinson and Langston Hughes. He's performed with Bruce Springsteen and performed poetry with world class jazz musicians. Ksenija Komljenović is a celebrated Serbian percussionist and professor. She was the first woman in Serbia to earn a doctorate in percussion, and she currently is the percussion department chair at the University of North Carolina. She won the International Percussion Competition in Luxembourg and she has performed across Europe, Asia and the U.S. including at Carnegie Hall. This SPECIAL EPISODE introduces my new single “THE CUT OF THE KNIFE”. It's the last of the four new singles that I've released monthly beginning in March. The first was “Rough Rider”, the second was “Moon Shot”, and the third was “Day At The Races”.I wrote “The Cut Of The Knife as a kind of homage to Dave Brubeck, the revered American jazz pianist. His saxophonist, Paul Desmond, wrote a song called “Take Five”, and the Brubeck band recorded it in 1959 on their album “Time Out”. That tune has become the biggest selling jazz song of all time. It even became a big crossover hit on the radio.One of the things that made “Take Five” so cool was that it was written in an odd time signature, 5/4 time. So the song's title was a play on words about its time signature and it was also an inside musician's phrase telling the band to relax for five minutes before the next set.“The Cut Of The Knife” features an incredible Guest Artist on guitar solo - Kerry Marx, the Musical Director of the Grand Ole Opry band who has been a guest on this podcast. His credits include touring with Johnny Mathis, Olivia Newton-John and Don McLean, recordings with Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash, movie albums like “Finding Nemo”, and music awards shows like Billboard, CMA and the American Music Awards.And a shout out goes to two of my longtime Project Grand Slam band mates - Baden Goyo on keys and Joel E. Mateo on drums. Both play terrific solos on the new single. The Mindfulness and Wellbeing in the Law Committee returns to the airwaves to give you the lawyer's perspective on the healing power of music. Scott Mason, Nancy Batterman and Kathryn Schneider explore the mindfulness practices inherent to musical artistry, and the way that those practices can inform a life in the law. Nancy and Kathy share their personal journeys in the City Bar Chorus and the strong sense of community they have built there. The episode gives a new framing for some of the challenging aspects of the legal profession, like performing under pressure and navigating a proclivity for perfectionism. We close with a guided meditation and a poem by Rumi, emphasizing the spiritual and emotional dimensions of engaging with music. Episode 72: William Bowerman. When I first saw Dua Lipa perform, the drummer immediately stood out, and it turned out he was also the musical director: William Bowerman. Fast forward 10 years, and William is one of the most in-demand musical directors in the world, coming out of London. He's still MD for Dua Lipa, and now his client list also includes Post Malone, Jennie, BLACKPINK, The Kid Laroi, FKA Twigs, Addison Rae, and many more. His work with Dua opened the floodgates, and he's since co-founded WFB with his wife, creative director Ace Bowerman. Together, they're building something special. East Clare Musical Society is celebrating its 20th anniversary in style. Their latest production will see them bring Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat to the stage. The beloved Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical will run from April 17th to 20th at the Scariff Community College Hall.
