Portland, OR-based multimedia artist William Selman returns to Mysteries of the Deep with his third album for the label. Drawing on influences such as David Toop, Beatriz Ferreyra, Elizabeth Waldo, and David Behrman, “The Weather Indoors” melds live and synthesized instrumentation, field recordings, and digital processing techniques in a new, more melodic and approachable direction. Immersive site recordings open into melodic woodwinds, orchestral instrumentation, bass guitar, gongs, and vibraphone. Borrowing from the anthropologist Tim Ingold's concept of “inversion,” this widescreen staging cuts immediately to the core of the project: the way human beings use the faculty of imagination to aestheticize their built surroundings with architecture, images of distant locales, and domesticated flora and fauna to contain the anxiety for the natural world that surrounds human life. A clear peak in Selman's extensive catalog, “The Weather Indoors” captures his work at a moment expanding his musical and aesthetic project: Neither genre ambient nor musique concrète, but a unique sound world dense with conceptual play and moments of more traditional harmonic beauty. “We are contaminated by our encounters: they change who we are as we make way for others. As contamination changes world-making projects, mutual worlds—and new directions—may emerge. Everyone carries a history of contamination; purity is not an option.” —Anne Lowenhaupt-Tsing, The Mushroom at the End of the World Releases May 19, 2023 Written, produced, and recorded by William Selman Mastered by Rafael Anton Irisarri at Black Knoll Studio NY Dolby Atmos Mixes by Matthew Patterson Curry Photography, Video Direction, and Words by William Selman Design by Gabriel Benzur Editing by Chris Zaldua Worldwide Distribution: Space Cadets © Mysteries of the Deep MOTDLP016, 2023 mysteriesofthedeep.net

I love the strange exotic sounds of artists such as Jon Hassell, Andrew Pekler, and William Selman. Their music can take you on an audio journey to imaginary places halfway around the globe. My first 4th World Excursion mix was 4 years ago and I've only done one follow up, which is weird considering how much I enjoy this style. Here are the first two in this series: https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/folding-water-fourth-world-excursions/ https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/strange-beauty-4th-world-excursions-vol-2/ And here is the new follow up - 4th World Excursions - Slow Water. This new mix follows a similar pattern and feel as the other two - using a combination of field recordings and the sounds of bells, drums, vibraphone, various mallet instruments, the vibe creates a feeling of floating in a small wooden boat in a lagoon somewhere in Indonesia. As the waves lap against the boat you can hear distant drums, crickets, jungle birds, frogs, and odd instruments lulling you to sleep. Of course there are electronic elements to keep things interesting. We're pleased to announce a very special release by Pavaka Group, a new project from William Selman (@wselman) 'Following modern utopian and human potential movements from the 60s through the 80s, one theme that runs through these groups is the inclusion of music and sound-making in their organized practices. As these groups sought to give their members the tools or environment from which to liberate themselves from the constraints and norms of postwar life, music was a common vehicle for that personal and spiritual liberation. Music—like collective, collaborative farm work or group guided meditation practice—was another channel for personal and group expression of a new ideal of living and being.' Mysteries of the Deep is proud to present the first chapter in a three-part seasonal anthology series, capturing a range of work from artists who have inspired or contributed to the project since its inception. This cohesive first chapter builds upon itself organically in a clear arc, offering listeners a sonic outpouring that is sparse, delicate and tonal. These are lullabies of presence. Part one in the series humbly boasts an accomplished array of artists, opening with an oceanic meditation from Aleski Perälä. It then moves into tracks from Andrew Pekler, Earthen Sea, James A. Reeves, LDY OSC, label staple William Selman, and Mysteries founder Grant Aaron, amongst other notable artists. As if an ode to the season of its release, these pieces retain a natural, generative quality. Think cirrus clouds moving against blue sky or the pale lavender of twilight. Each arrangement stays situated within the realm of air, of ether, presenting a world that is dreamlike and essential. Mysteries of the Deep is delighted to present its second album by Portland, Oregon-based musician and multimedia artist William Selman (@wselman), entitled “Naming Before Names.” In a world that demands categorization of everything around us through taxonomies, genres, and strict schemas, Selman’s album aims to explore the spaces between categories. His goal is not to offer concrete explanatory gestures, but rather, to create a deliberate space for suspension and ambiguity. These eight compositions conjure a world in which humans are asked to stand on the periphery, observing their surroundings from a vantage of curious wonder, rather than clear definition. Selman draws from distinct sonic realms, however, citing David Berhman, Maggi Payne, and Alvin Curran as influences. He says, “I like the way these artists use simple forms to ground dense compositions with an approach to composition that is improvisational and collage-like.” In line with this sentiment, the album’s quality is uncannily natural. Many of Selman’s field recordings, collected over a twenty-year period, find a home here, adorning a landscape that’s as visual as it is sonic; we hear hydrophone recordings of tide pools and summer lagoons, grasshopper wings in a lava field, broken humidifiers and sandstorms alongside moments of intentional instrumentation. Light vibraphone gives way to slow hand drum movements. Textured synths add viscosity without extracting us from the ecological world. It feels inaccurate to say the album’s occasional rhythms are constructed; rather, patterns seem to arise organically out of the aether. In Selman’s universe, there’s a sense that everything exists in primordial unity, untouched by the human imprint that insists on fragmenting the world into recognizable parts. "When I make a record, I always know exactly what I want it to sound like — so it's all about building a holistic world from the sounds I hear in my head at that moment," says Lori Scacco, the New York-based composer and multi-instrumentalist whose latest album, "Desire Loop," is Mysteries of the Deep's third full-length album release. For "Desire Loop," Scacco built a world all her own, and shared it with the world: "an album of synthesizer music that puts the study of color and texture at the forefront," writes Pitchfork's Philip Sherburne, with "consonant harmonies and simple melodies … evocative of European folk music." An array of friends and collaborators re-envision "Desire Loop" through their own lens on the accompanying remix EP "Interpretations Vol. III": William Selman gently extends the subtle melodies of 'Red Then Blue.' Helado Negro shifts the mood of 'Other Flowers,' from somber to exploratory. Victoria Keddie amplifies the found sounds in 'Back to Electric.' A Grape Dope cuts up 'Interactivity In Plastic Space,' lending it downtempo flair. And last but not least, Certain Creatures offers up 'Other Flowers in Strange Cities,' an extended 12-minute journey that swirls, undulates, and arpeggiates in equal measure. Deeper still goes Interpretations Vol. II, Mysteries of the Deep's next collection of edits, reworks, and revisions, all culled from our second full-length LP, William Selman's "Musica Enterrada." Both the gentle bloom of Matthew Patterson Curry’s twist on the title track and Borne's shimmering percussion-forward version of 'The Island Before The Internet' hew pleasingly close to the source material. Elsewhere, rrao and Clay Wilson transform 'Thick Description' into a stygian journey, with a susurrant reiki session, and Strategy recombines 'Musica Enterrada' into a classic subaquatic house tune. What if music had no beginning, no end? Can music exist "for itself" or "of itself," without structure constraining it, defining it? Can music be non-linear, non-narrative, simply experiential, existential? The second full-length album on Mysteries of the Deep, Musica Enterrada from Portland's William Selman, neither answers these questions nor supposes them. But in listening, one can't help but wonder: What if I disappeared into this record forever? In another time and place, William Selman was known as Warmdesk, an alias through which he issued a series of sharply precise minimal techno records. In recent past, Selman shifted gears, shedding the dynamics of tension and release that characterized his previous alias' output. Under his own name, Selman began releasing process-oriented, freeform experimental music on cassette-focused outlets like Digitalis and Hausu Mountain. Now comes Musica Enterrada, a diaphanous, weightless musical vision not unlike the theoretical square root of GRM and Popol Vuh's early electronic forays. Split into six tracks across two sides of vinyl, Musica Enterrada bubbles, churns, drifts, and dozes. Dulcet tones pile up gently like waves on shore. Patterns repeat and reconfigure, as if heard from different angles. Rhythms appear, shift the frame, then disappear, into the ether whence they came. Play Musica Enterrada on repeat. And if you disappear into it, fret not — you have drifted into solace. A1. Lithic Reduction A2. Thick Description A3. Polysemy B1. The World Without Us B2. Inferno Of The Same B3. There’s something about Marcus Fischer’s music that fits this season. Last year, a lot of listeners shared how the snowstorms they were homebound by were the perfect backdrop to Marcus’s reflections. As another year closes, I am so excited to share another conversation with this wonderful artist. This isn’t something I expected, but Marcus has been really giving of his time and it was his suggestion to do a follow-up. In the spirit of the season, I’m very thankful to have gotten to know him better. Since episode 5, Marcus has been for lack of a much better word, busy. He completed the Rauschenberg Residency and released the follow-up to 2010’s 'Monocoastal' — 'Loss', which is absolutely stunning. He established an experimental power trio with Paul Dickow and William Selman called Wild Card, which toured with High Plains at the end of this past summer. He’s been performing with Lisa Schonberg’s Secret Drum Band. He recorded another collaboration with 12k’s Taylor Deupree called 'Lowlands'. And I’m sure I’m missing something. This episode digs beyond his output as an artist to explore the internal processes that inform his approach, especially as an improviser. As always, the music from each of these projects and partnerships weaves throughout the episode, which can all be purchased as digital or characteristically breathtaking physical objects on Bandcamp.
