Twenty years ago I got an iPod. The rest as they say is history. Having published a mod fanzine in So Cal in the 80s, and then a website in the 90s devoted to mod style and cocktail culture, I was predisposed to be intrigued by this new fangled publishing medium called a podcast. I dove in head first on May 26, 2006 with the very first episode of It's A Mod Mod World, which quickly got rebranded to Mr. Suave's Mod Mod World. Now here we are 20 years and 600 shows later. I'm joined by some old mates from the Positive Steps scooter club to talk scooters, concerts and music both old and new. I don't know about you, but I've got the blues. The legendary queen of the blues Koko Taylor died a little more than a week ago, and that sparked me to dig out and revisit some my old blues, esepcially the British blues of the sixties, the early R&B. London's blues scene in the late 50s and early sixties spawned a number of bands and musicians that went on to great fame, many with very mod sounds - Rolling Stones, Georgie Fame, Them, the Animals, the Yardbirds and so on . And No doubt Ms. Koko Taylor was an inspiration to sixties mods who were blending the blues with rock, and jazz with soul, and creating radically new sorts of sounds. New year, new music. But what about last year's great music? Here's a last hurrah for some of the best releases of 2025. These are 20 of my favorites that I listened to on repeat in 2025. So many best of lists are ridiculously long with 200, 250, even 500 releases. What's the point? I like to take my time and actually edit it down to a managable number that means something. It's not easy, there are some bands that didn't make the cut, but were so very close and truly deserving. But not everything can be a favorite, because again, what would be the point? So here's my look back at some of 2025s best. Over a long and celebrated career, Toronto based costume designer Linda Muir has collaborated on plays, feature films, short films, television MOWs and series projects, embracing contemporary, period and fantastical scripts.From 1975 to 1991, Linda designed costumes and sets for the theatre, including The Theatre Second Floor under the direction of Paul Bettis, Tarragon, Theatre Passe Muraille, TWP, Toronto Free, Richard Rose's Necessary Angel, the Royal Alexandra, Manitoba Theatre Centre and Manhattan's Mabou Mines. She received Dora Mavor Moore Awards for Outstanding Costume Design for Daniel MacIver's Jump and John Krizanc's innovative first production of Tamara.Muir transitioned to film and television, where she has successfully utilized her skill with fabric, colour and texture, an eye for detail and a real talent for capturing character in clothing.Linda's hallmark is extensive research and voracious reading: solid footings for her imaginative designs for productions that have received numerous nominations and awards, including Robert Eggers' The Witch, and The Lighthouse, Atom Egoyan's Exotica, Patricia Rozema's When Night Is Falling, Lilies by John Greyson and Thirty-Two Short Films About Glenn Gould by François Girard.

Lam Ho's version leans into the quiet emotional tone of the mele, using minimalist accompaniment that allows the poetry and nuance to shine.   Pukalani Hale – Kawika Kahiapo (4:26) Kuʻu Manaʻo “Pukalani Hale” is a place-based mele grounded in the upcountry region of Pukalani on Maui — often translated as “heavenly gateway.” Kawika Kahiapo, known for his warm slack-key guitar and heartfelt delivery, performs the mele as an expression of home, spirituality, and gratitude. His musicianship reinforces the intimate connection between land and identity.   Mother Earth – Kawika Kahiapo (4:15) Kuʻu Manaʻo “Mother Earth” expands Hawaiian concepts of aloha ʻāina to a global message of environmental responsibility. Kahiapo uses gentle acoustic textures to remind listeners of their obligation to care for the planet. The mele blends Hawaiian worldview with modern ecological awareness, making it a contemporary anthem of stewardship.   Queen's Jubilee – Jerome Koko & Daniel Ho (5:15) Makaha Sons Memoirs “Queen's Jubilee” celebrates the musical heritage of the Makaha Sons through the talents of Jerome Koko and Grammy-winning producer Daniel Ho. Their collaboration fuses refined acoustic arrangements with the sentimental warmth associated with the monarchy era. The piece functions as a tribute — both to the past and to the many voices that shaped Hawaiian music across generations.   Ka Makani Kā‘ili Aloha – Jerome Koko & Daniel Ho (4:56) Makaha Sons Memoirs A beloved classic mele often translated as “The Wind That Steals Love Away,” the song personifies wind as an emotional force. Koko and Ho offer a clean, harmony-rich interpretation that honors the poetic storytelling at the heart of the mele. It pairs beautifully with “Queen's Jubilee” to form a thematic homage to Hawaiian musical legacy.   Ouanalao – The Waitiki 7 (4:33) Adventures in Paradise “Ouanalao,” named after the indigenous term for Saint Barthélemy, fits squarely in the spirit of mid-century Exotica while elevating it with jazz sophistication and modern cultural respect. The Waitiki 7 are known for reinvigorating Exotica through scholarly musicianship rather than kitsch. This track creates a lush world-fusion soundscape that expands the emotional palette of the show.   L'ours Chinois – The Waitiki 7 (8:07) Adventures in Paradise “The Chinese Bear” is a long-form instrumental journey blending Asian thematic colors, jazz improvisation, shifting tempo landscapes, and intricate percussion. It is cinematic in scope and demonstrates the ensemble's ability to honor Exotica's roots while pushing it into new, musically ambitious territory. The track deepens the atmospheric middle section of the episode.   Lehua Mamo – Waipuna (4:22) Manaʻo Pili A mele celebrating the cherished yellow lehua blossom. Waipuna's arrangement uses contemporary harmonies and polished production to honor traditional imagery of forests, blossoms, and affection. Even as it's the start of the holiday season I'm eschewing the holiday sounds for when we get a bit closer to Christmas. Right now I've got a whole show of new songs to share with you. Tons of good music has been dropping since the summer, and earlier in the year as well, and I realized I haven't been keeping up with keeping you hipped to the latest and greatest. Another week, another great modcast coming your way. I'm, kicking off the show with an American 60s band that sounds almost more mod than the British mods of their day. The band is Powder and I included them this week in part because this coming Saturday I'm going to get to meet them when they play at the Studio 66 mod night at the LoFi Performance Gallery here in Seattle, and lucky me I'm going to be the guest DJ. Another thing that is making this week's show especially good is that I'm joined by my old friend Dean Hoth who is the singer and bass player for power pop band The Eddies. Additionally Dean has been a behind the scenes mover and shaker in producing some great tribute albums, and is also working on releasing unheard live materials of older mod bands from the 80s to the 90s to the 21st century. What can I say about the Small Faces that hasn't already been said? Not much honestly. I'm not a Small Faces junky.  But I do love their music. In fact, in my earliest mod days I think I preferred them to The Who. It's been said that The Who was a band that became mods, but the Small Faces were mods who became a band. I was looking for some covers of Small Faces songs when I realized how few there really are out there. Compared to the hundreds of covers of The Who, The Kinks, The Stones and other British invasion acts of the 60s, I was shocked at just how few people have covered their songs over the years. And amongst those, fewer still ones that are really any good. I've gathered here a double handful that I think fit the bill and do the group justice. Filmmaker Atom Egoyan ("Exotica", "The Sweet Hereafter") returns after 9 years for his third appearance on the podcast. He has a new movie that is currently in theaters called "Seven Veils" starring Academy Award® nominee Amanda Seyfried ("Mean Girls", "Mama Mia"). The film follows theater director Jeanine (Seyfried) who, after years away, re-enters the opera world to stage her former mentor's most famous work. Haunted by dark and disturbing memories from her past, Jeanine allows her repressed trauma to color the present as her personal and professional lives begin to unravel. Renowned director Atom Egoyan sees "Seven Veils" as operating within a trilogy alongside his other critically acclaimed works "Exotica" and "The Sweet Hereafter". In "Seven Veils", he also reunites with Seyfried, who he worked with on the 2009 film "Chloe", in this visually stunning, propulsive work, filmed on location during the staging of his acclaimed production of "Salome". Egoyan directed the opera "Salome" in 1996, the first opera in what would be many to come over his career. Best known as a prominent film director since the 1980s, Egoyan has proven he is a master of both mediums, and "Seven Veils" is his way of bringing both together. Also on this episode the Canadian filmmaker Jeffrey St. Jules ("Bang Bang Baby") discusses his new film "The Silent Planet". The film stars the great actor Elias Koteas ("Exotica", "Crash") who joins us in this conversation.
