SOIL: Common Ground is a three-part podcast series produced by Somerset House exploring what soil can teach us about being human, through the lens of art. Much of the history of human making springs from the soil. Cuneiform, the earliest form of writing, was engraved into clay; paint pigments come from minerals in the soil; and much of our material history is held in ceramics. But soil is not neutral; it is deeply entangled with politics of ownership embedded in the land. In this episode Shenece Oretha probes the ways the soil and clay are inspiring artists today, looking at the stories soil can tell about our past and our potential future. Ceramicist and writer Jennifer Lucy Allan reflects on the ways clay connects us to the earliest forms of making. Artists Annalee Davis and Lauren Gault look at the ways soil bears witness to our histories, from the trauma of the plantation to the deep time of paleontology. We create art from soil, but through our extraction and interaction, it is also changed. How can we heal our relationship with the soil and in so doing, transform our relationship with the planet? Farmer and food justice advocate Leah Penniman unpacks how indigenous practices of soil care can reverse some of the most egregious effects of climate change. The series launches off from the Somerset House exhibition SOIL: The World at Our Feet. Presented by Shenece Oretha Produced by Jo Barratt and Alannah Chance Exec produced by Alannah Chance and Eleanor Ritter-Scott. The series is mixed by Mike Woolley Original music by Andrew Pekler. This series is part of the Somerset House Podcast.
SOIL: Common Ground is a three-part podcast series produced by Somerset House exploring what soil can teach us about being human, through the lens of art. Our Future is tied to the future of our soil. Our decisions as to how we care for and use it matter. Soil teaches us that cycles are ongoing, and even in decline every day offers us opportunities for new beginnings. In this final episode Shenece Oretha explores the regenerative qualities of soil and composting as a model for personal redemption. We hear from Palestinian grower Mohammed Saleh whose life story offers a personal story of hope, looking at how permaculture and art can help to heal the destructive impacts of war. Somerset Studios artist Harun Morrision's singing compost invites us to see decay in a new light and Fin Jordâo lays out how composting can be a radical action for rethinking our relationships with each other and the planet. Does the future hold a closer, more natural relationship with the soil by rethinking our relationship to burial? Radical undertaker Ru Callander reconsiders our attitude to death. I'm not exactly sure how this mix started. I think I was listening to the track, Outlook Remains Untouched, by |||||||||||||||||||| , yes that's the actual name the artist goes by. |||||||||||||||||||| on bandcamp I like the jazzy vibe the tune has. It reminded me of similar tracks from the heyday of glitch and idm that also had a jazz feel to them. Sort of Jazz-ish. So I grabbed some older tracks from 2001, 2002, 2006, and mixed them with new tunes to come up with this electronic mix that isn't really jazz...more like Jazz-ish. The latest mixtape instalment hails from Seoul-based Korean experimental musician Suk Hong, offering a curated selection of tracks that traverse the artist's creative journey for their upcoming project. Suk Hong's musical style gracefully navigates between neo-classical and electronic influences. Fresh from their recent release on Unseelie, an NYC-based label, Suk Hong returns with a more introspective and expansive piece, My Day is Sold by the Hour, which debuted at the start of March on endonesia, an alternative art platform based between New York and Seoul. Recorded amidst the misty atmosphere of the Guro district, Korea's bustling digital industrial complex, My Day is Sold by the Hour encapsulates the essence of its surroundings through sonic storytelling. While the area is blanketed in fog, its stories are evident sonically. String instrumentations echo like distant growls, while a tapestry of field recordings collected over three years weaves a textured narrative within a granular, deconstructed framework. With electroacoustic techniques and contemporary sonic landscapes intertwined, Hong seeks to unveil the inherent extraordinariness of captured moments, carving timbres that contour the running narrative - an unforeseeable series of vignettes. In discussing what the artist has created for this mixtape, Hong reveals ongoing work on an album delving into the modernity of Korean families, including their own: It follows the approach of My Day is Sold by the Hour, but this time, I need more than one track to present the complete picture. It's a longer project, so I need to cleanse my palette occasionally for a fresh perspective. These are the songs I turn to. This collection of tracks offers a tantalising glimpse into Suk Hong's creative universe, teasing the imagination with its suggestive and mysterious allure. I love the strange exotic sounds of artists such as Jon Hassell, Andrew Pekler, and William Selman. Their music can take you on an audio journey to imaginary places halfway around the globe. My first 4th World Excursion mix was 4 years ago and I've only done one follow up, which is weird considering how much I enjoy this style. Here are the first two in this series: https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/folding-water-fourth-world-excursions/ https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/strange-beauty-4th-world-excursions-vol-2/ And here is the new follow up - 4th World Excursions - Slow Water. This new mix follows a similar pattern and feel as the other two - using a combination of field recordings and the sounds of bells, drums, vibraphone, various mallet instruments, the vibe creates a feeling of floating in a small wooden boat in a lagoon somewhere in Indonesia. As the waves lap against the boat you can hear distant drums, crickets, jungle birds, frogs, and odd instruments lulling you to sleep. Of course there are electronic elements to keep things interesting. Mysteries of the Deep is proud to present the first chapter in a three-part seasonal anthology series, capturing a range of work from artists who have inspired or contributed to the project since its inception. This cohesive first chapter builds upon itself organically in a clear arc, offering listeners a sonic outpouring that is sparse, delicate and tonal. These are lullabies of presence. Part one in the series humbly boasts an accomplished array of artists, opening with an oceanic meditation from Aleski Perälä. It then moves into tracks from Andrew Pekler, Earthen Sea, James A. Reeves, LDY OSC, label staple William Selman, and Mysteries founder Grant Aaron, amongst other notable artists. As if an ode to the season of its release, these pieces retain a natural, generative quality. Think cirrus clouds moving against blue sky or the pale lavender of twilight. Each arrangement stays situated within the realm of air, of ether, presenting a world that is dreamlike and essential. Mastered by Rafael Anton Irisarri at Black Knoll Studio, NY Design by Gabriel Benzur Words by Taylor Bratches Worldwide Distribution: wordandsound → what people play © Mysteries of the Deep MOTDCOMP001, 2020 mysteriesofthedeep.net

ONA On Air producer Amanda Font (this is her first time, too) got the skinny on handling yourself and making the most of the conference from ONA board members Imaeyen Ibanga, and Benét Wilson, and former ONA board member Robert Hernandez. Music used in this episode is “Exotic” by Andrew Pekler and “Whispering Through” by Asura with Bonus Beat Blast 2011, which can be found on FreeMusicArchive.org.

RADERE (CELE, Full Spectrum / Denver) Radere (@radere) is the alias of Carl Ritger – a guitarist and synthesist currently based in Denver, Colorado. His work primarily explores the shadowy gulf that exists between drone and noise, blurring traditional instrumentation, electronics, and location recordings into densely textured sonic monoliths. Radere’s recordings have found their way to light via a slew of independent labels, including Full Spectrum Records, Moodgadget Records, basic_sounds (RIP), and futuresequence. He also conducts ongoing collaborations with Sun Hammer, offthesky, Ten and Tracer, Cody Yantis, and Anduin; as well as John Templeton, alongside whom he comprises the experimental techno vehicle Coward. This mix is a recreation of a set he delivered at the New Romanticks launch party in Denver, Colorado on Labor Day. The city was bathed in the smoke of the burning American West. It choked the lungs and burned the eyes as oppressive heat rose from the dust. What was meant to be a fond farewell to summer 2k17 instead devolved into an endurance challenge of Herzogian proportions, befitting the funereal tenor of these selections. Existential hymns for a doomed desert caravan. Artwork by Chris Cole Stream / download all Deep Club Podcasts here: soundcloud.com/deepclubdenver/sets/deep-club-podcasts TRACKLIST: 01. Aziz — Photo: Michael Green 'This place has become part of me. It runs in my blood.' Abdul Aziz Muhamat After seven long months in Port Moresby recovering from knee surgery, Aziz finally returns to Manus Island. He's overjoyed to be home in the detention centre – seeing his friends and sleeping in his old bed. But just as he returns, the Australian government begins shutting some of the centre's compounds – trying to force refugees to go home, or accept resettlement in Papua New Guinea. Aziz and the other detainees refuse to leave. When the compounds begin to close, hundreds of the men have been assessed for resettlement in America – yet hundreds more, like Aziz, haven't even started the process. This episode brings The Messenger into realtime. The closure of the Manus Island detention centre is expected to be complete by the end of October 2017. What will happen to the men who live there? There’s a thing that occurs over and over when people talk about success And it doesn’t even matter what kind of definition of it you have This thing comes up over and over And it’s working hard Nothing worth achieving comes without hard work Otherwise everybody would be doing it The same couldn’t be more true of being a designer There’s so many designers out there now You just need a computer and a copy of Photoshop and you can call yourself a designer There’s no regulation Increasingly people are turning away from traditional design education too Which I don’t agree with by the way So the only differentiator In a stupidly crowded market Is your work And the only way to make your work get better And stand out from anybody else's Is to do lots of it, and work hard The design world is no different from many other industries these days And I predict with the rise of the internet, competition for any job will only get bigger And the only way to make sure you’re the best is to work harder thane everybody else Designers have to know so many things these days And have to be good at so many different crafts That the only way to get good at them all is to knuckle down And get working hard Don’t get me wrong, I’m not advocating working yourself to the bone In a traditional sense I don’t mean work hard and burn yourself out I mean work hard at your craft And work hard to be the very best at what you do No matter what that is Because if you’re not working hard There’s somebody else just behind you waiting to take over OUTRO This was AADA. I’m Craig Burgess. Music featured in this episode was This...
