I wanted to post at least once more on mental health before the end of May, for Mental Health Awarness Month. Of course we will still discuss mental health, as we have done in the past (check out previous episodes). However, sometimes when there is a spotlight on mental health, it draws more attention to the topic. In this episode I spoke about how beneficial research can be and how it can open you up to more resources and insight. Using the Internet can be a great tool, especially for those who may not have as many resources in their area. I also spoke about my own journey and some things I have done over the years to address my mental Health. Hopefully sharing a snapshot of my journey can give ideas to others who feel stuck on where to start, or who want to get back on their journey. This episode was not edited due to the time constraints, so I hope you enjoy the rawness lol. In this episode, I wanted to encourage others to start your mental journey today, if you have not already. It is not an easy journey, especially for those who have experienced trauma and/or mental health concerns. However, the sooner you start the better. The journey is important because mental health affects your physical health and other areas of life. Before Mental Health Awareness Month is over, I encourage you to start doing some research and consider starting the journey of growth. If it is helpful, I can speak on what the journey can look like and how I have been working through some of the challenges. I wanted to speak on mental health since this month of May is Mental Health Awareness Month, at least here in the United States. Mental health is being talked about more in general, which is good; however, I do not hear it talked about as much in the context of health concerns. Chronic health concerns can take a major toll on a person's mental health, which in turn can also cause more issues with their physical health. I mentioned suidice ideations and how many times it is not discussed in the context of health concerns. I also spoke on auto immune concerns and disabilities since I believe those conditions need more spotlight. I hope this episode is helpful. I know it has been so long! I hope to be back more consistently. Apologies on the audio quality. This is a last minute, impromptu episode speaking on listening to your inner conscience regarding things that appear small. I shared an interesting experience I had earlier tonight. This episode I spoke on reasons why I believe we tend to fall prey to believe everything we hear. There are many other reasons, but these are a few that came to mind. I always encourage others and myself to question things and not to be afraid of the response from others. The goal is to keep us in a slumber or in a constant state of fear and uncertainty so we go along with whatever is presented. Some may question how this relates to health, but we have seen this in the pandemic where the majority went along with what was told, and now there is another convenient issue. It's very unfortunate how things are playing out and how many have suffered, so this is more of a reason for us to remain alert. So many people around this time are celebrating the holidays and they are preparing and/or eating so many different types of food. As mentioned in the episode, food can be very emotional, causing various feelings to arise. Guilt is one of them, so I wanted to touch on ways to address holiday food guilt. The goal is to enjoy food in healthier ways without unhealthy emotions attached to it. As far as Asian food, I meant more like Chinese food, Thai food, Japanese food and etc. I sometimes do not always know the best ways to describe certain cuisines, but just wanted to clarify that. Same with other terms and phrases I used to describe certain cultures and cuisines. Don't forget to follow me on Instragram at @naturalholisticlady Thanks for listening! In this episode I wanted to touch on the division that I see with the medical challenges that are occuring right now and the role of the media in everything. The episode is not to steer people on either side, but just to discuss the concern of this division and the tactics being used. I am not a medical expert, and even if I was, I encourage people to do their own research and also speak to your doctor (preferably more than one doctor) to see the best decisions for your health. There are also doctors who are also trained in alternative holistic practices, along with others who are very knowledgeable in health that you can reach out to regarding alternatives to your overall health. There are myths that people make up when it comes to the vagina. It's important they are addressed because so many women are struggling with vaginal issues. The shame and misinformation can lead to further issues and fear of seeking out support. Have you ever heard of programming? Well we all have been programmed, even if you are a free thinker and the type of person that always questions things. Unfortunately, many people do not question things and they simply go along with certain beliefs and mindsets because of what they hear and watch. Mass media plays a major role in programming, including television and social media. However, the educational systems, family, churches and other areas of society can also affect how we think and it is important to question why we believe what we believe. Resetting the mind is important as well, where we can benefit being more aware of what we are taking in, but also being intentional about taking steps to address those influences. Even good things should be done in balance and sometimes we need to take some time away and make sure we are not overdoing certain things and utilizing our time in a more efficient way. The goal is to stay grounded and protect our mind, body and spirit during all the controversy that is occurring. This is not about the left or the right, it's about where is this country heading and what ideologies are prominent. We see a major change in how people think and what is supported as a group. We should be aware how we are influence and aim to know firmly what we believe and having the ability to stand on what that is, despite what others are believe. Please be safe out there and use this as a learning opportunity for ourselves and to observe the climate of things. On a side note, I'm not saying using physical means to address issues is never necessary but a lot of the violence occurring is based on rage, bitterness and resentment. In others cases, it stems from racism, bigotry and other hate. This is the physical response I am referring to. Overall, let's be grounded, also using logic and intelligence. Let's also learn from history because history repeats itself. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/petiteveganlady/support
I wanted to touch on how sometimes we can use food to deal with the deep seated emotions that we have. These emotions can stem from current things we are experiencing or larger things that have occurred in the past or we anticipate for the future. As mentioned in the episode, receiving enjoyment and pleasure from food is not in of itself a negative thing. I believe food was created not just for nourishment, but also to bring joy to our lives and connect us to others. However, the concern arises when we are using food as a crutch to handle situations or to avoid addressing them. I hope this episode will be helpful to those who will listen and it will give you something to think about when you are making food choices. I am speaking on this also from experience, so I understand it can be challenging. I am hoping the plant based challenge will also give a chance for many of us, including myself, to reset things and acquire new habits as we approach the new year. I am revisiting the topic of anger as promised. In this episode I touched on various aspects that can contribute to deep seated anger. Anger in of itself, like stress, can be helpful and it inevitable. However, some of us are experiencing chronic anger on a daily basis which can lead to so many health concerns and a lack of peace and joy in life. I believe it is important to know where it can stem from so it can be addressed at the root. Yes, eating healthy, exercise, cleansing, essential oils, baths and so many other natural remedies can be helpful. On the other hand, we do not want to neglect addressing where the anger is coming from and taking the steps to work through it. That is the challenging part! With this pandemic, many have experienced a lot of emotions coming up because so many were made to sit with themselves in ways they had not done before. This is an episode to also reveal how I deal with anger as well and it is not something that is uncommon. Knowing this can encourage others to reach out the assistance they need so they can live a more productive life. This is even more important now with so much going on around us. In this episode I addressed anger, which is natural emotion, and how the way it is expressed plays a role in whether it can be positive or otherwise. spoke about how men and men tend to be viewed differently when it comes to anger and how this can at times have an effect on how anger is suppressed or expressed. Also, when it comes to anger, race can play a role as well. I mentioned that black women at times have to contend with the "angry black woman" stereotype and expectation, while also being expected to be emotionless at other times. Not all depression is linked to anger, however there are many cases where we see the mental health toll it takes on the average person who experiences deep rooted anger for an extended period of time. Because everyone deals with anger, just on different levels and in different ways, I believe this will be a timely message for someone who is having a challenging time dealing with anger and depression. I did not go into depth about possible ways to address it or where it may stem from, this was to get us to start thinking about anger and possible links to depression we may be battling. In the future we can dive deeper into the topic of anger if that would be helpful. In this episode, I speak on reasons why we cannot afford to get sick, especially in this day and age. The coronavirus situation has been a reminder for this topic as well, being that so many people are concerned more and more about their health and the economy. However, finances is only one reason I mentioned. Tune in to listen to other reasons why we cannot afford to get sick! You will also be able to hear my testimony with health and how even when we are not feeling well, we can still overcome and accomplish things. Side note: Getting sick is something that most people will go through a few times in their lives, even if they live a healthy lifestyle. This episode is not to say that we will never get sick and that if we do, we must have done something wrong each time. There will be instances that people will unfortunately get sick no matter how diligent they are with their health. However, the goal is for us to minimize how often we get sick, be less dependent on the medical system, improve how well our bodies can bounce back and also prevent sickness ahead of time. Diet will be one of the major ways, with the support of other factors such as alternative remedies, physical activity, fresh air, sun, improving mental/emotional health and more. In this episode I speak on how this year brought to the surface some factors that black Americans face such as pre-existing health conditions and overweight/obesity concerns. Along with the police killings against black people, which has been a longstanding concern, but has been recently brought to the surface again, this can add more stress to the health of black people. The same can be said for the economy and the healthcare system and the additional disparities that black people already face. I hope that this episode offers a reminder to the lessons we can learn in regards to improving our health and seeking to find alternatives to bridge the gaps in the disparities. 2020 has been a very interesting year with so many things happening back to back and at the same time. Many are in panic and chaos and I am hoping that this episode gives a different perspective and some encouragement. I know firsthand what it is like to have chronic stress day in and day out and to struggle with depression and anxiety. So I am not speaking from a place where I cannot relate to having fear and constant worry. Many students are back in college for the semester or will be going back soon. For some students, they are in their last semester, class 2020! I wanted to speak on various ways to improve health and success in college, not just on a physical level, but also beyond the physical. I hope the episode is helpful, especially to those who are recently out of high school or in their early 20s. Show Notes: I wanted to clarify that when I said that we cannot control ourselves, I meant that we all have a subconscious mind and a level of irrationality. Therefore, at times we are not in full control of what is going on inside of us or even aware, which is why it is even more exhausting to aim to change others. This is one reason I stressed really getting to know yourself and grow while in your youth, which can ensure more self control. However, it is never too late to start improving your life or turn things around. I also mentioned age groups in college and I wanted to share some stats that I found online. It appears for those ages 18-19, between 1970 and 2011, enrollment for both secondary and college has increased from 48%-71% (more increase for those at college level). Enrollment has also increased for students who are older, but it appears the increase is still much higher among younger groups. I also found information on the schools with the highest percentage of enrolled undergraduate students ages 25 and older. This can be helpful for those seeking to begin or return to college later in life. I placed both links below: https://nces.ed.gov/programs/coe/pdf/Indicator_CEA/COE_CEA_2013_01.pdf https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/most-over-25 I also realized I did not mention PhD programs, continuing education, professional certificates and more. Many times when sex is discussed it is only discussed in the context of illnesses and pregnancy. Although these aspects are important to discuss, I believe other aspects of sex should be discussed as well. This is even more important with the major rise in social media and the exposure so many more people have to sexually suggestive images and videos. I wanted to talk about the whole trend of big butts in society right now, especially with the major use of social media outlets such as Instagram. Also with the celebrity culture and many women being influenced by celebrity women, this also can have a major affect on body image. Women in certain groups, such as black American women, tend to have additional pressures to have a big butt and to be "thick" and shapely. This makes it even more difficult for black women who are skinny and perhaps also petite, feeling left out and wanting to fit in. I forgot to add the rise in the use of Apetamin as well for women who are seeking to gain weight in order to also have a butt. I will speak on this in another episode because there needs to more talk on the struggles thin women face, especially black American women. I notice some Spanish women, African women and other groups deal with these pressures as well from both men and women.
