I wanted to post at least once more on mental health before the end of May, for Mental Health Awarness Month. Of course we will still discuss mental health, as we have done in the past (check out previous episodes). However, sometimes when there is a spotlight on mental health, it draws more attention to the topic. In this episode I spoke about how beneficial research can be and how it can open you up to more resources and insight. Using the Internet can be a great tool, especially for those who may not have as many resources in their area. I also spoke about my own journey and some things I have done over the years to address my mental Health. Hopefully sharing a snapshot of my journey can give ideas to others who feel stuck on where to start, or who want to get back on their journey. This episode was not edited due to the time constraints, so I hope you enjoy the rawness lol. John Moe joins us as we start recording and releasing new episodes in 2025 after an extended break over the winter. John Moe is a Twin Cities-based podcast maker, author, public speaker, and mental health advocate. He created and currently hosts the podcasts Depresh Mode with John Moe (LA Press Club Award) and Sleeping with Celebrities on the Maximum Fun network and he has created and produced podcasts for clients including the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the American Psychiatric Association, Whitman College (two higher ed marketing awards), and University of Puget Sound. His writing has appeared in numerous publications, including The New York Times Magazine and McSweeney's. He is the author of four books, including the WSJ bestseller, The Hilarious World of Depression. Moe has delivered speeches on mental health all over the country. The Hilarious World of Depression was launched in late 2016 and was an instant success, quickly reaching the number two spot on the Apple Podcasts chart, garnering millions of downloads, and receiving widespread press coverage. It was based on the idea that depression is a lot more common than people realize, especially among celebrities and entertainers like comedians and musicians, and that open conversations on this often taboo topic could be a healing experience. The show won the Webby Award for Best Comedy Podcast in 2017 and led to a critically-acclaimed bestselling book of the same name in 2020.Our Whitman, My Story was conceived in collaboration with the communications staff at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. The small school had a challenge: how to attract applicants from around the world and how to get admitted students to actually enroll. The unhosted podcast series featured profiles of a diverse group of students, the kind of people who could be friends once a student arrived on campus. The podcast, which was renewed for a second season, won the CASE Circle of Excellence Award and the Educational Advertising Award. The success of the Whitman series led to another podcast at the University of Puget Sound featuring students, faculty, and alums as part of the school's capital campaign. Having made her television debut at just 9 years old, Alessandra Torresani is well-known for her roles in The Big Bang Theory, Caprica, Arrested Development and Malcolm in the Middle. In our interview with Alessandra, she gets candid about navigating adult life as an actress after she was diagnosed with Bipolar 1 at the age of 22. Despite being discouraged from talking about her mental health openly, Alessandra realized the importance of encouraging stigma-free conversations about mental health after she decided to share her story.  She said, “I'm Alessandra Torresani, and I am bipolar. Who wants to talk?” It turns out, a lot of people did. This “talk” kick-started her advocacy to normalize talking about mental health issues, and she has since started her own podcast, called EmotionAL Support, where she discusses mental health with her guests.   In this episode, we discuss:  - Alexandra's childhood and her journey through misdiagnosis - The importance that documenting both highs and lows has on receiving an accurate diagnosis - Alessandra's work with NAMI, and the conference where she shared her bipolar diagnosis - How toxic positivity discourages people from talking about their struggles - Finding emotional support and comfort  - The difference between mental health and mental illness  - What we can do to help destigmatize the conversation around mental health According to Alessandra, it's vital that we start talking about mental health openly and encourage people to seek support and medical help when they need it. This is the only way to foster an environment where every single one of us can celebrate our individuality and uniqueness. From understanding brain development to navigating crises, this episode offers expert tips and practical tools to help parents feel confident supporting their child's mental health. Tune in for insights that could make all the difference. “It's important that we kind of see past some of the worries about what a mental health diagnosis could do for a kid in terms of a label, because we're really thinking about the kid and hoping that they can be on a trajectory in which they can live out their best lives. But we have to provide them with the tools in order to get there, and we can't deny them that and deny them access to it, because we're worried that having a label of depression is going to ruin their lives. What will ruin their lives is not getting the help and treatment that they actually need.” ~Christine Crawford, MD, MPH To learn more -- or read the transcript -- please visit the official episode page. Though a lot of hard work, self-awareness, and surrounding myself with a phenomenal support network, I have found some stability, contentment and success while living with bipolar disorder.  A little over a year ago, I decided to share my story after not finding many relatable folks initially who were living comfortably with bipolar disorder, but especially men. While I have since found so many incredible creators, writers and friends living with bipolar disorder, I am so happy to have started an account sharing my own story. It has led to lasting and meaningful relationships with people all around the world.  Over the last year, I have been lucky enough to share my story for law enforcement, at universities and for local support groups and mental health education programs. It has provided me with direction and a path that combined a passion with a path forward. Recently, I began a job (my first not in sales or restaurants!) as the Director of Education for NAMI Southeast Minnesota, which will allow me to continue this amazing journey of spreading knowledge to eliminate the stigma that follows a mental illness diagnosis.  You can find more of my story at benefitsofbipolar.com, on Instagram @benefits_of_bipolar, on YouTube @benefitsofbipolar and articles for the International Bipolar Foundation at ibpf.org! I truly love nothing more than meeting people who are passionate about mental illness and those who live with bipolar; please reach out!

Johnny Crowder is a suicide/abuse survivor, TEDx speaker, Billboard-charting heavy metal musician, and the Founder & CEO of Cope Notes, a text-based mental health platform that provides daily support to youth and adults in nearly 100 countries around the world. Armed with a decade of clinical treatment, a psychology degree from the University of Central Florida, and 10+ years of peer support and public advocacy through the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Johnny's youthful vigor for mental health has impacted millions of lives across the globe. Johnny and Sara discuss mental health, Johnny's personal experiences, how after 25 years of abuse Johnny navigates determining who he really is, shares learned experiences with others, and created an important company that helps others going through mental struggles. Johnny knows how important it is to find help with one's mental health. When he couldn't find a way to maintain his own help on a daily basis, he decided to invent one. As a suicide/abuse survivor, he spent his formative years searching for resources to help him cope with his mental health conditions, ranging from OCD and bipolar disorder to schizophrenia. He wanted to combine the neuroscience principles he learned about in school with the power of peer support that changed his life in treatment. In 2017, he began sending unsolicited psychology facts, journaling prompts, and exercises to friends via text message. The response was so positive that he opened it up to the public, and the rest is history If you or someone you know and love needs help, here is the link to Copenotes, providing daily connection via texts and more. www.copenotes.com Daily Mental Health Support Also look at: johnnycrowder.com  Social Media: IG: https://www.instagram.com/saraschultingkranz/ You Tube: https://www.youtube.com/@saraschultingkranz./about Sponsor: Go to www.saraschultingkranz.com and use the code Live Boldly at checkout to get the special price of $39 for programs offered.
