Welcome back to the Identity Theft Resource Center's (ITRC) Weekly Breach Breakdown, supported by Sentilink. I'm James E. Lee, the ITRC's President, and this is the episode for May 23, 2025. Earlier this month, I did something I had not done since 2019: I attended the annual geek-fest that is the RSA Conference in San Francisco, which was dominated by discussions on machine identities and data breaches. I spoke on the root causes and impacts of data breaches at a cleverly titled session on “how to cause a data breach.” As it turns out, my host and I stumbled into one of the hot topics of the conference. Ever wish you could go back and start your weight loss journey over—but with all the wisdom you have now? That's exactly what I'm sharing in this episode. After losing 65 pounds (and keeping it off through two pregnancies, postpartum, and all the real-life stuff in between), there are 5 big things I'd do differently to make the journey easier, less stressful, and so much more sustainable. In today's episode, I'm breaking down:
Summary In this episode, Brian shares five key lessons from Las Vegas that every restaurant operator should hear. From faster drink service to private room optimization and upsell strategy, these practical insights are designed to boost revenue while enhancing the guest experience. Learn how to modernize your operations, empower your staff, and grow profitability—starting tonight. Key Takeaways Modernize the Reservation Process Use your reservation system to curate guest experiences, not just book tables. Ask the purpose of the visit—anniversary, business dinner, birthday—to personalize the service. Leverage confirmations via text or phone as additional engagement touchpoints. Prioritize the First Drink—Fast Speed matters: get the first drink in hand quickly, ideally before guests are seated. The faster the first drink, the more likely a second drink will be ordered—which increases revenue. Train staff to lead with beverage suggestions and make cocktail menus stand out. Train Staff to Curate & Upsell Teach servers to read the table and suggest appropriate apps, drinks, and entrees. Pre-sell appetizers for the table instead of waiting for guests to decide. Create incentives (e.g., spiffs) for staff to move high-margin items like premium wines or cocktails. Always Be Booking the Private Room Treat your private room like a key revenue generator, not a hidden option. Use it for business dinners, group celebrations, and high-spend guests—even if not requested. Simplify the booking process and avoid unnecessary friction like deposit hurdles or rigid policies. Create Concierge-Style Add-Ons Offer celebration packages: wine, flowers, dessert upgrades, or to-go items. Introduce pre-orderable take-home meals, cookies, or lunch for the next day. Use the reservation system to upsell enhancements before the guest even arrives. Pro Tips A thoughtful reservation experience can set the tone for a higher check average. Lead with a separate cocktail menu to shift attention and increase sales. Servers should be trained to place the order for the table when appropriate—it enhances the guest experience and simplifies decision-making. Use private dining space more often—don't let it sit idle. Think like Amazon: reduce friction in ordering and upselling. People want to be sold.

March is Women's History Month and by extension, Women in Music Month—an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate women's contributions to our field. As a teacher, I love finding ways to honor and celebrate things like this with my students. A few years ago, we did a studio-wide blues composition project (see Ep. 045) during the month of February, Black History Month. Then, there was the year I created a 4-week study unit for one of my high school students focused on women composers. In Ep. 057, I talked about the composers and scores we were planning to study and shared a resource list of elementary and intermediate piano music written by women composers that you can reference in your teaching. This year, we're celebrating Women in Music Month with a series of musical informances. In this episode, you'll get a behind-the-scenes look at how we're preparing including how I'm structuring the events, how we're highlighting women's contributions to the field, expectations I have for my students, and ways we can include the audience in the process. For show notes + a full transcript, click here.Resources Mentioned*Disclosure: I get commissions for purchases made through some of these links.Ep. 045 - The Blues Composition ProjectEp. 057 - Women in Music Month in the StudioThe Oxford Handbook of Public Music Theory (2022), ed. In this episode, Lisa Paladino shares her top five takeaways from the American Laser Study Club's Breathe & Thrive Conference. While tongue tie is often discussed in the context of breastfeeding, this conference reinforced its lifelong impact on airway health, speech, sleep, and overall function. Lisa breaks down key insights from leading experts and discusses how professionals can improve outcomes for infants and beyond.Key Takeaways:1️⃣ Tongue Tie Is More Than a Breastfeeding Issue – It impacts oral development, airway health, and lifelong function, not just infant feeding.2️⃣ Collaboration Is Essential – No single provider can fully treat tongue tie. Success comes from teamwork between lactation consultants, SLPs, bodyworkers, and release providers.3️⃣ Function Over Form – A release alone isn't enough. Pre- and post-procedure therapy are critical for proper tongue function.4️⃣ Airway Health Starts Early – Mouth breathing, poor oral habits, and sleep issues often stem from oral restrictions that should be addressed in infancy.5️⃣ Misinformation Still Exists – Many outdated myths persist, and ongoing education is essential to ensure families get the right care.Resources & Links:

It's never been easy being a woman in tech. But now? When top tech execs say there's "not enough masculine energy" in “the culture?” It's a lot. Wouldn't it be nice to have a show where women who've “made it” can share their inspiring success stories? Sure. But this is not that show. Because we don't need “nice,” we need honesty. And, if we're being honest, failure can teach us even more than success. In the second half of B The Way Forward's second season, I'm talking to leaders from Adobe, Google, Slack, and more, to shine a light on the lessons they learned from their worst days. These conversations are candid, sometimes painful, and often funny. But most importantly, they are packed with insights, practical tips, and lessons to help you navigate your career. Because sometimes what you need to learn from your heroes isn't how to soar - It's how to fall flat with grace. --- At our heart, AnitaB.org is a connector: we connect women in tech to the organizations, opportunities, and tools they need to advance, thrive, and transform the future of technology. We convene transformative events, lead essential discussions, produce groundbreaking research and white papers, and support the tech ecosystem to shape the future for women in tech. --- Connect with AnitaB.org Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/anitab_org/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/AnitaB.0rg/ LinkedIn - .https://www.linkedin.com/company/anitab-org/ On the web - https://www.anitab.org

Hi beauties! It feels so good to be back from maternity leave. So much has changed since our last episode of 2024 – my daughter Jade has made her arrival and we're all adjusting to being a family of four. When I went on maternity leave, I chose to take a 6-week break from social media so I could really soak in this chapter in our family's life. I learned so much in my time away from social media, and I wanted to kick off the first episode of 2025 on the six biggest benefits I experienced from being offline. After a career spent on the internet, it was amazing to see what being offline did to my sense of creativity, my ability to engage with more long-form media, and my relationship to time. Starting with the Hollywood Housewife blog in January 2010, then building a social media presence, then becoming a podcaster and an author, and I have so many stories and thoughts to share about the last decade and a half.On this episode, I'm talking about the things I did right, the things I definitely got wrong, and how I've evolved right along with the World Wide Web.Join SECRET STUFF to hear even MORE behind-the-scenes stories.FULL SHOW NOTES HEREMORE episodes on this topic:Ep. 73: I Wrote a Book!Ep. 63: Working From HomeEp. 111: Behind The Scenes of Publishing, Marketing, and Launching a Book (with Kelly Gordon)Ep. 166: How To Write a Book (in 10 Steps)Ep. 174: 3 Things I've Learned While Working With a Business Coach (A Conversation with Retha Nichole)MENTIONED in this episode:Ep. 251: 10 Things I Learned in 2024Sorta Awesome podcastSmartest Person in the Room podcastRacial Bias series on SPITRShare Your Stuff.
