Pastor Davis tackled one of the Bible's hardest passages, 1 Samuel 15:1-3, where God commands Saul to judge the Amalekites. Rather than avoiding the tension, he leaned directly into the difficult question: “How can a loving God command violence?” His central argument was that this passage is not about ethnic cleansing, but “ethic cleansing” rooted in God's justice against persistent evil.  The sermon emphasized three truths about God's judgment: it is patient, perfect, and paradoxical. Pastor Davis explained that God waited centuries before judging Amalek, showing extraordinary mercy and desire for repentance.  He stressed that God's justice protects the vulnerable and is never based on ethnicity, but on the condition of the heart.  The paradox of God's character was highlighted, in that He is: fully just, yet deeply compassionate. Even while judging sin, God “sighs deeply” over sinners with mercy and grief.  The sermon ultimately pointed to Jesus as the better King who bore God's judgment on behalf of sinners through the cross. 

The conscience is that inward awareness of guilt before God. It is the knowledge deep inside us that something is wrong between us and Him. And here is the great truth of Hebrews 9: Religion can cover guilt temporarily, but only Jesus can cleanse the heart completely.

By the mid-1800's, the River Thames was essentially a massive sewer. People poured their waste into it. They also drank from it. That combination resulted in thousands of deaths. People weren't sure what caused the deaths, but in the summer of 1858, when the temperatures rose and the water levels dropped, London stunk to high heaven. During Holy Week, Jesus enters the temple and finds that the Lords house has become corrupt. People were buying and selling goods and it had become something it was never intended to be. And in Jesus' redemptive ways, He truly flips the tables, sending all of the corruption out, cleansing the temple of it all and teaching them the truth. In this episode my thought is simple, we (as followers of Jesus Christ) are His temples filled with His spirit that cleanses us of all unrighteousness. In order to understand the Triumphal Entry properly, we need to grasp the fact that the Cleansing of the Temple was the culmination of that Triumphal Entry. It was all of a piece. Reading it with the flow of the story in mind, it should remind us of the conclusion of The Odyssey, where the entire build up is learning into the justice that Odysseus will bring to his house. It is a fitting and satisfying conclusion.
