Sin leaves us guilty and defiled, but God's grace does more than just pardon us. He cleanses us, restores us, and gives us a new purpose. In Zechariah 3, Joshua the high priest stands before God covered in filthy garments while Satan accuses him. But instead of leaving Joshua in his guilt, God graciously removes his filthy garments and clothes him in clean garments. This powerful picture points us to the greater work of Jesus Christ, the promised Branch, who provides the cleansing and restoration we could never accomplish on our own. Grace doesn't merely rescue us from our past. Grace restores us to God's purpose.

Britain, France and Canada have announced sweeping sanctions on trade with Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. The British Foreign Secretary accused Israeli settlers of "ethnic cleansing" against the Palestinians living there. Israel responded by ordering the closure of the British consulate in Jerusalem. The U.S. has yet to push back against the sanctions. The U.N. says settler violence has reached unprecedented levels and this summer, dozens of prominent figures in Israel signed a letter demanding action to 'eradicate Jewish terrorism' in the West Bank. Among them was former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. A mirror can show you what is wrong, but imagine having no way to wash or clean what you see. That is how many people approach the Bible: They recognize their sin and failure, feel powerless to change, and eventually close the Book in discouragement. But Scripture is more than a mirror. In today's episode of the MY Devotional Podcast, Dr. Michael Youssef points to the Bible's cleansing power. Ephesians describes Christ sanctifying His church through “the washing with water through the word,” while Peter reminds believers that obedience to the Truth purifies the soul. We cannot transform ourselves through willpower. But when we receive God's Word, believe it, and obey it, the Holy Spirit works through that Truth to change our hearts.
