Doug Batchelor's message “Cleansing the Sanctuary” explores both the historical and spiritual meaning of the biblical sanctuary and how it symbolizes God's plan for salvation. He explains that the earthly sanctuary described in the Old Testament was a reflection of the heavenly one, serving as a teaching tool to reveal how sin is dealt with through Christ's ministry. The sanctuary's cleansing—particularly the Day of Atonement—points to the final work of judgment and purification before Jesus' return. Batchelor draws parallels between the physical sanctuary being cleansed of sin and the believer's heart being purified through repentance and the power of the Holy Spirit. He emphasizes that God's true dwelling place today is not in temples made with hands, but in the hearts of His people. Therefore, the “cleansing of the sanctuary” represents God's work of cleansing the church and individual lives from sin, hypocrisy, and worldliness in preparation for Christ's soon coming. In practical terms, Batchelor urges believers to invite Jesus to search their hearts, remove anything that separates them from Him, and live holy lives guided by His Word. “Then Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out the people selling animals for sacrifices. He said to them, ‘The Scriptures declare, “My Temple will be a house of prayer,” but you have turned it into a den of thieves.’” (Luke 19:45–46 NLT) In our next set of devotions, we’re going to look at ways to “tune up” our spiritual lives—ways to strengthen and mature our relationship with the Lord. And we’re going to start with some early spring cleaning. My wife, Cathe, and I are polar opposites when it comes to cleaning. My approach can be summed up by the procrastinator’s motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow. Cathe’s approach is to constantly clean and organize so that over time, little messes don’t become big ones. Obviously, her approach is the better one. In Luke 19 we find the story of Jesus’ cleaning the house of God as He went into the temple and drove out the moneychangers. These temple merchants were taking advantage of people and keeping them from God, and this angered Jesus. This is the second time in Scripture that Jesus cleaned the temple. In John 2:13–17, we read that He used a whip to drive out the moneychangers. Little messes turn into big messes, so Jesus arrived to clean house again. I believe there is a parallel to our own lives. When we come to Christ initially, we ask for His forgiveness, and He pardons us of all our wrongdoing. In fact, we are told in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” (NLT). What a wonderful thing it is to realize that God has forgiven us of all our sin. We are cleansed. But as time passes, sometimes some of our old sins find their way back into our lives. Maybe they start small. But they don’t stay that way. They begin to grow and take up bigger and bigger parts of our life until they become a serious problem. The longer we wait to address them, the harder the cleanup is. That’s why we must frequently examine our lives and deal with what we find instead of trying to excuse it. We must ask God to make us aware of things we may not see. We must also find accountability partners who will lovingly confront us when they see things in our lives that go against our Christian faith. The apostle Paul wrote, “Examine yourselves to see if your faith is genuine. Test yourselves. Surely you know that Jesus Christ is among you; if not, you have failed the test of genuine faith” (2 Corinthians 13:5 NLT). The psalmist wrote, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life” (Psalm 139:23–24 NLT). Does your temple need cleansing? Are there some things in your life that shouldn’t be there? Are there some vices, some bad habits that have found their way back into your life? If so, deal with them now. Today's sermon continued our series on marriage, using the metaphor of a garden to explore how to keep a marriage fruitful and alive. Just as a garden needs fertilizer to keep producing, marriages need intentional investment to stay healthy and vibrant. Drawing from Ephesians 5:25-33, we looked at seven “fertilizers” for marriage: creativity, appreciation, physical touch, knowledge, friendship, calmness, and the gospel covenant. Through personal stories, practical advice, and biblical insight, we were challenged to actively nurture our marriages, not letting them grow stale or depleted. The ultimate foundation is the gospel itself—a covenant of grace, selflessness, and security that shapes how we love and serve our spouse.

And in this description, we find — not just the wonder of what God will graciously do for the Jewish people — but what God has done for ALL OF HIS PEOPLE in THE CLEANSING of His people. What God will do for Israel at the end of the age, God has done for you and me on the day that He saved us and forgave us of all our sins. We will consider this chapter under five headings, each one having to do with a relationship between God's saving acts and the cleansing of God's people. I. REPENTANCE AND CLEANSING (THE MOURNING OF THE PREVIOUS CHAPTER) This chapter is vitally connected to the ending of the previous one. "In that day" makes clear that a continuation of thought is occurring. This reaches back to verses 10-14 of the previous chapter and repeats the words at the beginning of verse 11. Drawing from Ephesians 5:25-33, we examined both humorous and serious examples of marital "weeds"—habits, attitudes, and priorities that undermine intimacy and unity. We discussed the importance of giving marriage its own space, maintaining proper priorities (God, spouse, then children), and the dangers of boredom, hidden agendas, and selfishness. Through personal stories and biblical wisdom, we were challenged to examine our own hearts, seek God's guidance, and intentionally invest in our marriages with honesty, humility, and selfless love.

Because, just like, let's say, somebody writes you something or says something to you, and you perceive a molecule of anger, you know, the Rudra energy. Just say, you perceive a molecule of that when you... when you receive some... It might be translated into something like, 'How dare they?' Then, don't answer until you calm down. That's why letters were good, because you write it in anger, and the next day, because you couldn't find a postal stamp, it's like, 'What was I thinking?' Nowadays, people just push the button. And in a similar way, when we're making decisions, diplomatic or otherwise, I mean, diplomacy has a place, but we have to investigate: Am I self-motivated? Is there something in it for me, for my fame, or because I want to have the experience of dominating another person? If that's there, then it's going to be contaminated. So, be careful. Once the heart is cleansed, we should invite Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa to sit down, and we should observe the festival by distributing prasādam and chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu used to teach every devotee by His personal behavior. Everyone who spreads the cult of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu accepts a similar responsibility. The Lord was personally chastising and praising individuals in the course of the cleaning, and those who are engaged as ācāryas must learn from Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu how to train devotees by personal example. The Lord was very pleased with those who could cleanse the temple by taking out undesirable things accumulated within. This is called anartha-nivṛtti, cleansing the heart of all unwanted things. Thus the cleansing of the Guṇḍicā-mandira was conducted by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu to let us know how the heart should be cleansed and soothed to receive Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa and enable Him to sit within the heart without disturbance.  In this sermon, we continued our journey through Ephesians 5, focusing on the metaphor of marriage as a garden, specifically the role of "water"—the nurturing influence wives bring to the relationship. We explored how words and attitudes can either nourish or poison the marriage, using the story of David and Michal from 2 Samuel 6 as a cautionary tale about how even well-intentioned correction can go terribly wrong if delivered without grace. Sermon Summary — Zechariah: Session 3 Text: Zechariah 3–4 Theme: “Not by Might, Nor by Power, but by My Spirit” Speaker: Pastor Matthew Robbins (LWWC) 1. Opening and Ministry Update Pastor opened with thanksgiving: in just six days, 32 new nations began listening to the church's broadcast — evidence that God's Word is reaching the world. Prayer emphasized the importance of being “found in the Word, following the Word, and structuring our lives around the Word.” Transitioned into Zechariah 3, explaining the historical background: The people of Israel had returned from Babylonian exile. The prophets Haggai, Zechariah, and Nehemiah encouraged them to rebuild the temple and walls of Jerusalem. 2. The Ark and God's Faithfulness Pastor recalled the history of the Ark of the Covenant, which never changed — from Moses to David to Solomon — symbolizing God's unchanging nature. He shared conviction from the Holy Spirit: the original Ark still exists and will one day reappear when Israel rebuilds the temple. Israel has reportedly reconstructed priestly garments and temple furnishings, preparing for restoration. Key lesson: God never changes; His covenant stands forever. When the Ark reappears, it will be a global sign of God's faithfulness and sovereignty. 3. Joshua the High Priest and Filthy Garments (Zechariah 3) Vision: Joshua the high priest stands before the angel of the Lord while Satan accuses him. Joshua is clothed in filthy garments, symbolizing human sin and unworthiness — even a priest cannot stand clean before God on his own. God rebukes Satan and commands that Joshua's filthy garments be removed and replaced with rich robes and a clean turban marked “Holiness to the Lord.” Meaning: God removes iniquity and clothes His people with righteousness. Salvation is not self-earned — “We can't clean ourselves; the Lord must do it.” Application: Many people say, “I'll fix myself before I come to God.” Pastor rebuked this thinking: “You don't clean up to come to Jesus — you come to Jesus to be cleaned up.” 4. The Branch — Jesus Revealed The angel declares: “I am bringing forth My servant, the Branch.” This is a prophecy of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, who removes iniquity “in one day.” That “one day” refers both to: Israel's restoration (1948 — national prophecy fulfilled in a day). Christ's crucifixion, where sin was forgiven once for all. Through Christ, believers are clothed in righteousness — the Old Testament points directly to Jesus. 5. The Vision of the Lampstand and Olive Trees (Zechariah 4) Zechariah sees a golden lampstand (menorah) with seven lamps and two olive trees beside it. The angel explains: “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit.” Zerubbabel, a descendant of David, was leading the rebuilding of the temple. Meaning: Human effort cannot accomplish God's work — it is only through the Holy Spirit. “Some trust in chariots and horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord.” 6. Watchman Nee and the Broken Vessel Pastor shared insights from Watchman Nee's “The Release of the Spirit.” The alabaster box story illustrates that the value is not the vessel, but what's inside. The Holy Spirit must be released through a broken life. Our cleverness or intellect can block the Spirit's flow — we must depend fully on God's Word and Spirit. True ministry touches the spirit, not merely the emotions or intellect. Key quote: “If I only tell stories but don't use the Word of God, I'm touching your soul, not your spirit.” 7. The Capstone and the Mountain God tells Zerubbabel: “Who are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain.” Symbolic of God leveling obstacles through grace and power. “He shall bring forth the capstone with shouts of ‘Grace, grace!'” The capstone (or chief cornerstone) represents Christ, the head and completion of all things.
