After a long delay, my wife finally spent several hundred dollars on a high-quality juicing machine and tried out a 10-day juice diet. I watched her try it, not really wanting to do it the first time. But, I'm now past the half-way mark on the diet myself. I've lost weight and look much slimmer. The diet works. I don't eat bread or rice. I don't eat sugar or dairy. On some days, I had a couple snacks of meat or nuts. Besides the vegetable juice and fruit smoothies, I drink black coffee and water. How does it work? My gut is pretty much empty, but I'm not suffering as much as if I were on a strict fast. In addition to the mental hurdle, the juice making process is quite labor intensive. Juicing takes way longer than regular cooking. It is more expensive than my normal diet. After ten days I will have eaten 30 kilos of fruit and vegetable, which would be impossible to consume if not for the juicing machine. My main motivator to stick out the diet is the amazing example and dedication of my wife. Scott Riley shares the fascinating journey of mind, body, and spirit that helped him cure his rheumatoid arthritis and depression. [3:40] Scott tried some immunosuppressant drugs for his autoimmune condition: rheumatoid arthritis. [5:10] Scott found one pharmaceutical drug which helped for about six months. But then it stopped working and this was very discouraging. [5:55] Scott describes his rock bottom point. It was in June 2014: his joint pain made it difficult to open doors, brush his teeth, and to go up and down stairs. [6:50] Scott also started to feel very isolated and withdrawn. [8:40] Scott lacked any hope and had what might be described as suicidal depression. "I certainly did not want to be here." [11:05] After researching people who had success with autoimmune conditions online, Scott came across the documentary Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. In the documentary, the main person Joe Cross, healed from an autoimmune condition by going on a 60-day juice fast. [12:30] Scott decided a 60-day juice fast would be worth trying. He decided to combine the approaches of two juicing documentaries: Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead (by Joe Cross) and Super Juice Me (by Jason Vale). [14:30] Six months out from January 2015, Scott booked a trip to the Peruvian Amazon to be treated by tribes there with plant medicines. [15:30] In the Amazon, Scott was treated with wachuma, ayahuasca, and bobinsana. Scott originally heard about the idea from Aubrey Marcus on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. [17:45] What was Scott's experience like on the juice fast? [23:45] What were some of the tangible effects of the juice fast that started to show up about four weeks in? [28:00] Between the 60-day juice fast and his trip to Peru, Scott's diet was "clean" and consisted mainly of steamed veggies, chicken, and fish. No refined sugar, processed foods, or added salt. [28:45] What was Scott's first solid food meal after his 60-day fast? [30:45] Booking the trip to Peru was key for Scott in his healing and for him sticking to his juice fast. [31:25] The place Scott went to in Peru is Sprit Quest Sanctuary near Iquitos. [32:45] The treatments (the plant medicines mentioned earlier) have a psychoactive component. [40:30] Scott describes the setup of SpiritQuest Sanctuary at his arrival. [45:20] Scott recommends Michael Pollan's book How to Change Your Mind as a good Western look at psychedelic/psychoactive drugs/medicines. The book describes some of the neuroplasticity that can be achieved by psychedelics. [50:00] Scott describes the start of the Peruvian treatment and the focus placed upon setting intentions. "Whenever you set the intention to actually take the medicine, it begins working." [54:30] This (ayahuasca) was Scott's first experience with psychoactive medicine. [1:00:00] Ayahuasca treatments were every other night at SpiritQuest Sanctuary. [1:04:20] Part of the healing process involved the entire SpiritQuest group (approximately 20 people being treated) getting together and sharing their experiences the morning after ayahuasca treatments. [1:10:00] The ayahuasca portion of treatment was challenging; the wachuma portion was uplifting. Scott had set two intentions in Peru: to help others improve the quality and circumstances of their lives, and to find other likeminded people to connect with. [1:14:30] Scott found out about the Wim Hof Method and took the 10-week course: it took him from a prevention mindset (keep the bad symptoms away) to an optimization mindset (as in, "I'm capable of so much more than I realized"). [1:17:00] Scott became a certified Wim Hof instructor. The Wim Hof Method has 3 pillars: breathwork, cold immersion, and mindset. It helps train your nervous system to go from "fight-or-flight" to "rest-and-digest"; it helps you downregulate from stress. [1:19:30] Joe and Scott discuss some of the science behind the Wim Hof Method (including their ability to be injected with an endotoxin with greatly reduced negative impact compared to a control group). [1:21:40] "Obviously, the control group felt terrible... and of course in the Wim Hof Method group, they were all feeling awesome, loving life, and not suffering from the inflammatory effects of the endotoxin that was injected into them." [1:22:20] "In the 21st century, basically everyone is walking around in a state of chronic stress purely by being born into a world that we haven't really evolved for. And the Wim Hof Method is just a method of training your nervous system how to come out of the stressed state which is basically always switched on by 21st century living." [1:25:15] "It creates a lot of self-belief in people when you can show them that they are can do way more than they think that they're capable of doing. It can be a great tool for helping people to go on and change their life once they can see that they are capable of a lot more." [1:27:10] What does Scott consider the root cause of his healing? [1:28:50] About six months prior to recording, Scott gained more understanding on how to go deeper into simple practices with authenticity every day: good sleep, cold exposure every day, active breathing every day, getting into nature every day. [1:30:30] Through his Causeway Living health coaching company, Scott has recently rolled out a new six-week program (SixWeekShift.com) to help others improve their life quality and circumstances. [1:33:30] Does Scott consider himself cured of rheumatoid arthritis and depression? [1:35:15] Now that Scott has improved his health, what's one thing he enjoys doing that he couldn't do before? I recently listened to Kelli Tennant's podcast where you were a guest and I have to say - wow! The knowledge that you have acquired is admirable and I am very curious to know more. I am seeking help in the sleep department as I have been experiencing a significant period of insomnia, as well as abnormal/cessation of menstrual cycle. I live in LA, do you see patients here? If not, do you have a list of trusted like-minded practitioners like yourself in Los Angeles/CA? Thank you! Cara: Hi Dr Cabral! Fortunately, I have little stash of your CBD products while we patiently wait for yours to be available again.I recently wanted to try a brand of CBD plus THC tincture that a friend was trying because straight CBD still wasn't quite helping me go to sleep. Ive been doing all the other protocols and supplements for sleep.I came upon a brand that sounds great, they post their lab/pesticide reports right on their product pages. They don't make that 24:1 CBD THC blend anymore but they claim they have the strongest CBD oil. Its 750 mg per a 15 mil bottle. However they use non gmo soy lecithin and upon questioning they say that increases the bioavailability. It's tested for residual pesticides and solvents. They say that's why people say there's is so much more potent because its more bioavailable. Since you're the master at bioavailability, what are your thoughts on this? I'll do anything for them. Many thanks for your input. Malinda: I’ve been searching for the answer to what is the root cause of CRADLE CAP. Like you, I have a need to know the underlining issues that causes dis-ease in the body. There has to be a reason that some babies get cradle cap while other do not. All I see online and in my baby books is "there's no known reason, it just clears up on its own." My first child had it when he was a baby and after about a year it cleared up on its own. Now my 8 month old has it. I’ve decided this time around I want to really understand what is going on in my babies body. I am using Babyganics cleansing oil which contains oils like sesame seed and almond as well as calendula and black cumin to name a few ingredients, in addition to giving her 30C of Boiron Calcarea Carbonica a day, which is the homeopathic recommendation. Im noticing her scalp flaking more and it looks like it’s going away by using these products. However, I really want to know what has caused CRADLE CAP to happen in the first place because even though Im using these products and the issue seems to be resloving, is her body still in dis-ease even after the cradle cap has cleared up? Does her gut need more probiotics? Should I do a rotation diet? Am I eating something that is causing it, since she is breastfeeding? Someone on your facebook group page suggested that not washing your baby right after birth keeps it away, however I had all natural home-births and didn’t bath my babies for at least a week if not more. Also was suggested that a correction of balance of the skin flora/gut flora would locate its root cause. I want her body/ gut to be as healthy as it can be going forward. I'm curious as to what is REALLY causing it. If you have time, I also would like to know what is the root cause of hernias? I’ve searched your podcast but non address the root cause. After my husband had a inguinal hernia, it seems everyone we talk to has had a hernia or multiple hernias, which I want to avoid for my husband. Our bodies can’t possibly be that flawed. My dad has premature ventricular contractions his whole life but it's ramping up in his 50s, to a debilitating point where it would happen every minute of every hour for HOURS until he takes Atenolol & Estazolam. Then it would slowly subside and the skipping & palpitations would be manageable. This would happen at grocery stores at checkout, non-stressful conversations, and sometimes throughout the night. His physician / cardiologist switched him to Metropolol & Clonazepan. Which exacerbated the condition and it's still affecting him now. I think that taking 10 years of benzos caused a dependency that can't make him switch from Estazolam? What is your take on this situation for short term immediate relief & long term root causes? Our guest today is Dr. Andrea Paige. Andrea is a naturopathic doctor, an iridologist, a colon hydrotherapist and a yoga teacher trainer. She is also dedicated to a life of cellular cleansing. Andrea is the former Director of the Detox program at Yoga Barn , the largest yoga studio in Asia and she uses nutritional therapy, colon cleansing and fasting as profound gateways to deeper healing. Andrea studied Evolutionary anthropology and holds a Masters of Science in Ethnobotany, a Doctorate in Naturopathy, and a Certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition with T. Colin Campbell at Cornell University. Andrea has a long list of certificates and trainings in her bio on her website so check that out to get the full scope of all the wisdom she’s carrying. It is vast! Andrea brings people to their own inner sense of aliveness through health, awakening, a sense of vitality, and consciousness. I interviewed Andrea at The International Yoga Festival in India where she was one of the speakers. I’ll never forget that moment really and it was really special to have her there holding space for me. In the interview Andrea goes deep on a lot of fascinating topics.
