Have you ever thought you knew someone–really knew them–only to discover later they weren't who you thought they were? Presidential elections are a big deal. If you put the wrong kind of fuel into your car engine, it will ruin your engine overtime, which will ultimately prevent you from being able to get where you want to go. What's the longest you ever had to wait for something? Have you ever waited too long for something? Whether we consider the length of time we've waited to be exorbitant depends on what we're waiting for. Waiting an hour for a meal at a Michelin star restaurant? Perfectly reasonable. Waiting an hour at McDonalds? Not so much. But how long would you wait for God to answer a prayer? An hour? A day? What about a lifetime? What about not-in-your-lifetime? In Habakkuk 2, God explains some of his plan for saving his people from the Babylonians, but he leaves out a crucial detail: when. Waiting, as they say, is the hardest part. We all aspire to be something–someone special. Yet when we take an honest inventory, we realize that we just can't seem to get there. For me, I'm never satisfied with my level of understanding, physical fitness, intelligence, and depth of relationships. There's just so much in life where I feel like a failure. For example, in my relationship with Jesus, I feel like I'm constantly tripped up by the same sins. I want to be better. In holiness, I want to become more of who I was designed to be. And in all of my effort to turn what I aspire to be to what I actually am, I find that I can lose my focus on my first true love, on Jesus and what he's done for me. You see, there's a secret to our faith. There's a maxim to our relationship with the Lord. The deeper we ponder it, the more we seek to understand, the more he lifts us out of our own personal pit of sin. Oh, I've tried it the other way, by focusing on the sin. But it will just drag you back down like a whirlpool in the Delaware. But there is a way out! There is a key. Have you ever felt like you were dispensable… maybe disposable or replaceable? Sure, your mom thinks you're special, but you're just one of more than eight billion people on the planet! It's easy to feel like your life doesn't really matter much in the grand scheme of things, that the world is just too big for your life to make any real difference. But in his most famous sermon, Jesus tells us to that there is a way of life that, while not always popular, is essential for the world's good. That despite what the world might think, you are indispensable to the good that God wants to create in the world through you.More info https://www.ebc.org or call (609.267.4755), email (office@ebc.org), DM us on Instagram or Facebook, or come see us in person at Easton Bible Church. Easton's Pastor of Family Ministries Luke McAlack shares from the book of Acts Chapter 1 verses 6-11, that we have been granted the power to be witnesses to the Gospel; beginning with ourselves, family, community, and people from every background because God loves us and God loves each and every person we meet. Has anyone ever tried to convince you to do something a different way? It could be how you cook a particular dish or how you drive or how you parent or how you exercise. And getting that kind of advice isn't always solicited or welcomed! But sometimes it's the advice we need.As part of our current series, over the next few weeks we'll be unpacking Jesus' famous Sermon on the Mount from Matthew 5–7. In his sermon, Jesus gives us more than just advice. He introduces us to an altogether different way to live. And it's more than just a radical picture of what life is like in his kingdom; it's his strategy to turn the world's way of doing things upside down. Because when you live like the kingdom, you bring the kingdom.More info https://www.ebc.org or call (609.267.4755), email (office@ebc.org), DM us on Instagram or Facebook, or come see us in person at Easton Bible Church. Institutions exist for the sake of existing. Movements exist for the sake of making a difference. When Jesus calls us out of the hopelessness of sin and death, he's not calling us to be part of an institution. He's calling us into his movement to change the world.More info https://www.ebc.org or call (609.267.4755), email (office@ebc.org), DM us on Instagram or Facebook, or come see us in person at Easton Bible Church. Privilege, power, and popularity are the subtle drugs of celebrity. There's nothing inherently wrong with having status or being famous. But when being seen as powerful or important becomes essential to your identity—either who you think you are or who you wish to be—the temptation to do whatever it takes to gain that level of prominence can become overpowering. And, if you're not careful, you just might, as Jesus warns, gain the whole world, but lose your soul (Matt. 16:26).Following his baptism, Jesus goes into the desert where he's tempted by the devil to make a name for himself, to seize the privileged position as the only Son of God, by betraying his Father, his mission, and himself. But rather than relishing a life of celebrity, Jesus shows us a better way. Have you ever had someone love you enough to tell you the truth about you? One of the most courageous acts in life is to see yourself as you really are. And the degree of honesty you have about who you are will determine the degree to which you grow in life. In Matthew chapter 3, Matthew introduces us to a man named John the Baptist who told people more than they wanted to know about who they were. Because unless you know who you are, you'll never understand who Jesus is and why he came for you.More info https://www.ebc.org or call (609.267.4755), email (office@ebc.org), DM us on Instagram or Facebook, or come see us in person at Easton Bible Church. Have you ever known the right thing to do… and did the wrong thing anyway? Both behavioral psychology and neuroscience suggest that our brains operate on two different wavelengths. There's the reasonable, rational, conscious part of your brain (left-side) and the automatic, intuitive, reactionary part of your brain (right-side). Jonathan Haidt compares the two sides to a rider on an elephant: the rider knows where the elephant should go, and with enough time can direct the elephant… somewhat. But the elephant—our automatic responses (what Paul calls “our flesh”)—is actually far stronger than our conscious thought (the rider), no matter what we might wish to believe. So, how can we re-program our minds so that our automatic responses are the right ones? In Romans 12, Paul describes four practices for spiritual formation—loving God (v. 1), growing together (vv. 3-5), serving one another (vv. 6-8), and sharing our lives with others (v. 13)—that both deepen our connection with God and establish our new identity as part of God's family. Because the best way to re-direct an elephant is to put it in a herd moving in the same (and the right) direction.More info https://www.ebc.org or call (609.267.4755), email (office@ebc.org), DM us on Instagram or Facebook, or come see us in person at Easton Bible Church.
