The Parable of the Lost Son  -  11 Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. 12 The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.' So he divided his property between them.13 “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. 14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.17 “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father's hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.' 20 So he got up and went to his father. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.21 “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate. 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' So they began to celebrate.25 “Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. 27 ‘Your brother has come,' he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.'28 “The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. 29 But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Well, it's with a whole bundle of mixed feelings that I'm writing this. I love you all and I love this church which God has created through you. And, of course, I love being your pastor.During the past couple of years, I've noticed that it's getting harder and harder for me to be the pastor you and this place needs and deserves. It's not you--it's ME. After the crazy medical stuff, I'm just not the same—my energy and effectiveness is way less that it was.I joke about getting old, but the reality is--I am! And what's worse is I see it, know it, and FEEL it!I've prayed with and spoken to my closest friends, pastors, and counselors. They affirm that it is a good and healthy time that we as a church begin the process of transitioning to a different lead pastor to take us into the future here at Mariners. I made this announcement last Sunday and, if you want, you can view it on our you (marinerscc.org).  This transition process will take time and I'm here with you through it all. Remember, this is also my church family so I'm planning on staying here even after I've stepped aside.  We do have a great team in place to begin the process of doing all that goes into finding the right person to shepherd this place. And your involvement will be needed as time goes on.  Next Sunday, March 16, in the worship center after our 10:45 service we will have an informal conversation to share more about this where we can answer your questions and talk about the process. I would love for you to stay for that. Yup, we'll have childcare.  This is a GOOD thing! God knows exactly what He's doing. And He is Good. And this will be a pretty cool time! And I (still and will always) love being your pastor!  Pastor Paul   PS: In the meantime, PRAY for God's work on the Coast. Pray for the person God is preparing for this ministry. Life has a way of chopping us down sometimes.  We can feel beat up by this life and feel disappointed. Disappointment in ourselves and in others. It has an effect on us, on our perspective, on our outlook on life.  When we make mistakes, when we mess up, we feel guilty, ashamed of what we've done and so we hide.  This affects our ability to love others and to let ourselves be loved.  The truth is we are damaged people; maybe your parent's divorce messed you up, or Middle School messed you up, or your choices messed you up. And having been damaged, we unknowingly damage others by our behaviors, our reactions, like anger, envy, bitterness.  But God.... Jesus comes to reverse all that, by pouring out HIS incredible love and grace and acceptance of YOU—not matter who you are or what you have done. He said: I'll die on a cross for you.  “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.” -Jesus, Revelation 3:20In today's message, Pastor Paul Richardson discusses prayer.  Prayer is our direct connection to God.
