Bobby talks about TV shows that he thinks have lost their way and we each share our picks for ones that we loved in the beginning and gave up on. Bobby walked out and noticed that his pool was completely drained. He is trying to get to the bottom of what happened. Raymundo wants to get Bobby’s take on what he tips on different services like haircuts, fast food and more. We also debate if kids under 16 years old should be able to have social media. What happens when caregiving never ends — when you cared for your siblings as a child, your own children as an adult, and now your grandchildren in older age?In this episode of MissPerceived, Professor Leah Ruppanner discusses Grandmothering While Black: A 21st Century Story of Love, Coercion, and Survival by Lashonda Pittman, a powerful book based on interviews with over 75 Black grandmothers in Chicago raising their grandchildren. Leah unpacks the historical legacy of racism and family separation that shapes these caregiving arrangements today, the difference between multi-generational and “skipped generation” families, and the immense mental load these grandmothers carry while navigating broken welfare, healthcare, and housing systems — sometimes even having to hide the fact that grandchildren live with them just to access resources.Leah connects this research to a much bigger question about care in every country: what do we lose when caregiving is coerced rather than chosen, and what would it look like if systems — not individual women — carried more of that weight?Chapters:00:00 Introduction — a book that stayed with Leah all weekend 02:16 Who is Lashonda Pittman, and what is Grandmothering While Black? 04:35 The historical legacy of removing children from Black and Indigenous families 06:53 Multi-generational vs. “skipped generation” families 08:56 Navigating broken systems: welfare, housing, and hidden caregiving 11:07 “There's no break in the care” — a lifetime of caregiving across generations 13:00 Judy's story: “I'm ready for a life” 13:31 What we lose when care is coerced instead of chosen 14:30 Sweden's approach: care systems designed to free people, not trap them 15:30 A bigger question: why do we force caregivers to trade their ambitions?Resources Mentioned:
The Love, Happiness and Success Podcast With Dr. Lisa Marie Bobby
If you're doing EVERYTHING in your relationship and starting to resent the hell out of your partner for it…we need to talk. You're the one who notices. Remembers. Plans. Worries. Follows up. Makes sure things actually happen. And after a while, it stops feeling like we're in this together and starts feeling like: Why am I the only one who cares? I've been a marriage counselor for over twenty years, and I can tell you: this dynamic can get ugly. Because underneath the arguments about dishes, schedules, kids, errands, and who was supposed to do what is something much more painful: If you really loved me, why would you let me carry all of this alone? That's why I invited sociologist Dr. Leah Ruppanner, author of Drained, to join me for a very real conversation about mental load, resentment, and how to create a relationship that actually feels balanced again. And some of what she shared surprised me. Because the solution may not be getting your partner to do more. It may not be splitting everything 50/50. And some of the things you're doing to make your relationship more equitable could actually be keeping you stuck. You'll discover: Why does the mental load turn into such intense resentment? What's really happening when you feel like you're the only one who cares? Why can asking your partner to “just help more” backfire? What if 50/50 isn't actually the healthiest goal? Are you unknowingly making it harder for your partner to step up? And how do you change this dynamic when your partner isn't changing? If you're exhausted from carrying your relationship (and even more exhausted from being angry about it), listen to this before you have the same fight again. 568. You know that feeling. Five minutes with a certain person and you need a three-hour nap. You leave the conversation and realize you've given everything while receiving nothing. Energy vampires are real — and the science behind why they drain you is more interesting than the term suggests. This week Dr. Judy Ho unpacks the psychology of emotionally depleting relationships: what's actually happening in your brain and body during these interactions, why some people are far more vulnerable than others, what distinguishes the unconscious drainer from the deliberate one, and three tools to protect yourself without becoming someone who cuts off everyone who's ever had a hard day.Have a mental health question? What does a strengths-based approach actually mean — and when does it become another way of asking people to solve impossible problems alone? In this episode of MissPerceived, Professor Leah Ruppanner responds to a listener's thoughtful question about why her work focuses so much on structural barriers, inequality, and the systems that make life heavier. Leah explains the value of identifying your strengths, resources, resilience, and community support — but also why strength alone cannot fix unaffordable childcare, inaccessible healthcare, discrimination, or a broken labor market.Through research on LGBTQIA+ families, the Mental Load Audit, and the sociological tension between structure and agency, Leah explores how we can use our existing strengths while still demanding collective solutions. You are powerful, resilient, and capable — but you were never meant to carry structural problems by yourself.Chapters:00:00 A listener asks: Where is the strengths-based approach?01:30 What “strengths-based” actually means02:23 Strengths-based vs. deficit-based thinking03:00 The Mental Load Audit as a practical strengths-based tool04:46 LGBTQIA+ families, shared experience, and community as a resource07:06 The problem with “just try harder”08:00 Why individual resilience can't solve structural inequality09:19 Structure and agency: what is yours to carry — and what is not?10:00 Asking for help, sharing the burden, and building coalitions11:42 Why lived experience is valuable research and knowledge12:30 How we change systems without carrying the whole world aloneResources Mentioned:

Vivian gets brutally honest about her own biggest financial mistakes; the ones she made before she was Your Rich BFF, when she was just a broke twenty-something figuring out money the hard way. From a credit card mishap that tanked her score by 60 points to the retirement account she funded but never actually invested, this episode is a tour through every money misstep so you don't have to make them yourself. In this episode, Vivian covers: 1. Why closing your oldest credit card can quietly wreck your score, the difference between "cheap now" and "cheap long term" and why buying stuff to impress people you don't even like never actually pays off. 2. The most common retirement mistake almost everyone makes and how to avoid it. Plus how to track down security deposits (and interest!) landlords conveniently "forget" to return. 3. Why comparing your finances to your friends' is a losing game, how unsupportive friendships can cost you more than money, and why your parents' financial advice might be stuck in an economy that no longer exists. You can wake up with the best intentions, move through your day doing all the "right" things, and still find yourself completely wiped out before dinner. For a long time, I thought that meant I was carrying too much. Lately, I've been seeing it differently.Everything has weight. Making breakfast. Getting your kids ready. Saying yes. Reading a book. Sitting on the couch. Even the things that fill you up still take something from you. The problem isn't that life has weight. It's continuing to pile things onto your plate after you've already reached your own capacity. It made me realize exhaustion isn't always a sign that you're doing too much. Sometimes it's a sign you've gone past your own full point.Your body usually knows you've reached your limit before your brain is willing to admit it. Feeling completely depleted isn't something to judge. It's information. A chance to look back at what was on your plate before you automatically added more.Because maybe the answer isn't doing less. Maybe it's learning to stop overriding yourself.Work with me: Lighter: A 12-Week Live Experience for the woman who has it handled. FrontStage BackStage with Jason Daye - Healthy Leadership for Life and Ministry
Many pastors and ministry leaders reach a point where they feel spiritually drained, even while faithfully serving, leading, and doing what they believe God has called them to do. The work continues, but something underneath feels thin, distant, or depleted. In this highlight from a conversation with Ken Shigematsu (https://youtu.be/60n3ZtoAyzY?si=wEdQ5W95CpATZujX ), host Jason Daye explores why spiritual exhaustion is so common in ministry and what it reveals about how we are living. Ken shares how a rule of life is not about adding more to your schedule, but about reordering your life around rhythms that allow you to receive from God instead of constantly pouring out.Rather than striving harder, spiritual renewal often begins by slowing down. Through practices like prayer, rest, delight, and attentiveness, leaders can begin to reconnect with God in a way that restores both identity and joy.In this conversation, Ken and Jason explore:Why pastors and ministry leaders often feel spiritually drained despite doing meaningful workHow productivity culture quietly shapes identity and disconnects us from GodWhy a rule of life helps leaders live from God's love instead of striving for itHow spiritual rhythms restore clarity, joy, and presence in everyday lifeWhy embracing limits is essential for long-term health in ministryPractical ways to begin building a sustainable rule of lifeThis episode will resonate with pastors and ministry leaders who feel spiritually exhausted and want to rediscover a deeper, more grounded life with God that flows from grace rather than pressure.Looking to dig more deeply into this topic and conversation? In today's episode, Dr. Alison reflects on David's honest prayer: “My spirit fails.” This is not a polished prayer or a failure of faith. It is a truthful prayer from a depleted soul. If you're still functioning on the outside but feel dry, drained, or quietly unraveling on the inside, this passage gives you language for coming to God exactly as you are. We explore: *Why depletion is not laziness or spiritual failure *How emotional exhaustion impacts your nervous system *What actually helps restore us *Next steps to take when you're feeling depleted Go Deeper: If today's devotion helped you feel less alone, share it with someone who might need the same encouragement. “Stop and smell the roses” is a familiar phrase, yet today's guest challenges us to make the “roses” our default mode rather than something we try to remember to do. Say What? So… If you feel like you're trying to stand still on ever-moving ground…Or perhaps, you feel like, on paper, what you've achieved should ‘feel more satisfying and less exhausting or lacking', or that you perhaps don't deserve to feel content or happy in today's world, and you find yourself worrying about ‘everything', then this show is a recommended prescription. I recently came across Joe DeNicholas, MBA, LCSW, whose work bridges the worlds of science, secular spirituality, and psychological healing. Joe believes it's not only possible but essential to cultivate and connect more often to our ‘ok-ness' and so he helps people to do that in his work every day and in his book Unbreakable Wellbeing. I felt truly challenged by the idea of even deserving to work on connecting to my ‘ok-ness' more often before my conversation with Joe; ‘whattabouting' all the things I find gravely unjust, and worried it would come across as spiritual bypassing to air a show like this, but it turns out: Joe's approach might just help us make the world a better place. We look at our personal barriers, frame ourselves within the big world without losing ourselves, and learn a couple of very simple exercises we can use to reconnect to a trust that we're ok. And that, my lovely listeners, is this week's show. I know we all need it. Take us for a walk and let yourself trust that you're ok. You get enough sleep. You exercise. You eat well. You practice deep breathing. You meditate. You do everything you're told to do—yet you're still exhausted. Why?In this episode of The On-Call Empath, Raj explores a truth that many people miss: exhaustion isn't always physical. Sometimes it's the result of constantly giving your energy away.Every "yes" you say to someone else can cost you energy. Every healthy "no" helps protect it. Many of us spend our lives people-pleasing, overcommitting, and carrying emotional burdens that were never ours to carry. In 2026, many people cope by endlessly scrolling their phones, binge-watching Netflix, overeating, or staying busy just to avoid what they're really feeling. Even if you're thriving in your career, you may still feel emotionally depleted, disconnected, and unmotivated. No one is coming to save you. Reclaiming your energy starts with the choices you make every day, the boundaries you set, and the life you're willing to change. If you've ever wondered why you're still drained despite doing everything "right," this episode is for you. It's time to stop surviving and start protecting the one resource you can't afford to lose—your energy.IG intro credit: katylandisThe On-Call Empath Podcast:Welcome to "The On-Call Empath" podcast, where we dive deep into the complexities of abuse and trauma. Most executives know something is wrong years before they do anything about it. They have the title, the income, the team, and still feel stuck inside the corporate burnout and golden handcuffs that come with high-performing careers. Drained, distracted, and quietly miserable for 40 to 60 hours a week. In Part 2 of our Executive Career Change series, you'll hear from two real executives, Hayley and Katie, who finally made the move they'd been putting off for years, without blowing up their income or their lives. The question isn't whether to leave. It's how to stop rationalizing your way into roles that look great on paper but feel wrong in practice. What you'll learn: Why high-performing executives tolerate the wrong situation longer than everyone else, and what finally forces the breaking point The hidden cost of staying that most people never see until they're already on the other side of it Why generating activity like updating your resume, calling recruiters, and jumping into interviews is not the same as making progress How Hayley co-created a role built around her strengths instead of just finding the next available job What Katie had to figure out before she could move forward, and why it changed everything about how she searched Our book, Happen To Your Career: An Unconventional Approach To Career Change and Meaningful Work, is now available on audiobook! She has a PhD in Sociology and has spent decades researching and publishing over 70 peer-reviewed articles on gender, work and family. Today we discuss: her new book Drained: Reduce Your Mental Load to Do Less and Be More. The term mental load has become more familiar in recent years, but the popular understanding of the concept often reduces it down to managing a list of household chores and logistics. In the book, Leah reveals that for women, mental load actually goes much deeper: It's a complex form of emotional thinking that is invisible, boundaryless, and enduring. In Drained, she outlines the eight distinct types of mental load and highlights what makes them so uniquely heavy for women. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
