The answer is more straightforward than you might think!1) Christians must test doctrine2) Christians must hold fast to truth3) Christians must listen to truthText: 1 John 4:1-6

In this homily, Fr. Michael reflects on Jesus' forty days in the desert and the invitation for each of us to follow Him into that place of encounter. Sharing his personal experience of time in hermitage and the story of St. Catherine of Siena, he explains how the “desert” is where we learn to listen to God and face our temptations. Lent is a time to strip away distractions, make space for God, and renew our choice to give our lives to Him. Fr. Michael encourages us to embrace this season as a real encounter with God's love and to seek the grace of confession if needed.

In this sermon, the Mikhail discusses the significance of persistent prayer and how it shapes our relationship with God. He emphasizes the importance of communication in prayer, finding joy in trials, and asking for wisdom. Mikhail shares personal experiences and insights on how trials contribute to spiritual growth and the necessity of faith in overcoming doubt. He concludes by encouraging listeners to bring their struggles to God and to engage in a deeper, more meaningful prayer life. Takeaways Persistent prayer is essential for a strong relationship with God. Communication with God should be constant, not occasional. Finding joy in trials is a key aspect of faith. Asking for wisdom in prayer allows for deeper understanding. Trials are opportunities for spiritual growth and maturity. Doubt can hinder our relationship with God and our prayers. Listening to God is as important as speaking in prayer. Prayer should be a posture of surrender and openness. We must bring all our struggles to Jesus, no matter how small. Faith and perseverance in prayer lead to spiritual completeness. Life has a way of chopping us down sometimes. We can feel beat up by this life and feel disappointed. Disappointment in ourselves and in others. It has an effect on us, on our perspective, on our outlook on life. When we make mistakes, when we mess up, we feel guilty, ashamed of what we've done and so we hide. This affects our ability to love others and to let ourselves be loved. The truth is we are damaged people; maybe your parent's divorce messed you up, or Middle School messed you up, or your choices messed you up. And having been damaged, we unknowingly damage others by our behaviors, our reactions, like anger, envy, bitterness. But God.... Jesus comes to reverse all that, by pouring out HIS incredible love and grace and acceptance of YOU—not matter who you are or what you have done. He said: I'll die on a cross for you. “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.” -Jesus, Revelation 3:20In today's message, Pastor Paul Richardson discusses prayer. Prayer is our direct connection to God. But prayer sometimes feels daunting. We don't know what to say, we may feel like we don't approach God with enough reverence, or maybe we think "I don't know any prayers." Today's message will help you understand what prayer is meant to be and will help you experience the comfortable and peace received after talking to God. Let's listen.Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.~James 4:8 Support the show IN NEED OF PRAYER? SEND US YOUR PRAYER REQUESTS ONLINE JOIN A LIFEGROUP CONTRIBUTE TO OUR CHURCH AND MINISTRIES

In this message, Terry Timm explores the profound importance of attuning ourselves to the voice of God. He emphasizes the significance of adopting a posture of surrender and openness, akin to the biblical Samuel's plea, "Speak, Lord, your servant is listening." Through personal anecdotes and biblical narratives, Terry invites listeners to practice discerning God's loving and wise guidance in their lives.
When the people of Israel came to the edge of the Promised Land, God instructed Moses to re-state the Law and the terms of the Mosaic Covenant before the people entered into the land. As Moses is nearing the end of his instruction, he tells the people that God will bless them if they are careful to obey all that God had commanded but also warns them what will happen if they choose to ignore God's commandments and turn away from Him. In today's study, we'll examine whether God responds to our obedience and disobedience the same way in light of the New Covenant in Christ Jesus.

Richie Reeder invites us to transition from a traditional approach of simply talking to God, to actively listening for His voice. Drawing from John 10:2-5, he illustrates Jesus as the Good Shepherd and us as His sheep, who are attuned to His voice. This imagery encourages us to develop a deeper, more interactive relationship with God—shifting from a monologue to a dialogue with Him. Richie references Samuel and Mary as models of attentive listening, emphasizing the importance of being fully present with God. He shares contemplative practices from believers, such as nature walks, silent meditation, and turning off distractions like the car radio, urging us to establish holy rhythms that facilitate divine encounters. The practice of Lectio Divina is highlighted as a means to engage with Scripture, not just through study, but by allowing it to resonate personally within our hearts and life situations. copy button

Beginnings In Prayer - Part 4: Listening to God Because He Desires to Speak to Us MESSAGE SUMMARY: Prayer is: 1) spending time with God – acknowledging God's presence in all our lives' activities; and 2) conversation with God – listening to and talking with God. Prayer reflects on our relationship with God. Why don't we pray. The Apostle James, in James 4:2-3, provides a perspective regarding Prayer Life: “You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions." In praying, we should know the difference between prayers of "petition" (praying for one's own needs) and prayers of "intercession" (praying for the needs of others). God wants prayers of "petition" from us -- all our needs and concerns should be brought to Him in prayer because He loves and cares for us. However, God want us to, also, focus on others and their needs (intercession) -- physical and spiritual. "Intercessory prayer” is fundamental to deepening our prayer life and our personal relationship with God. We need to consider "how we listen" to and for God. Usually, God speaks through the Holy Spirit like He spoke to Mary. Jesus tells us about the Holy Spirit and “listening” through the Apostle John in John 16:13-15: “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.". God, mostly but not always, uses that "still small voice" in our minds. We need to seek out places and times so that we can listen for and to God. Listening validates relationships in our secular lives -- why would it be different in our relationship with God? God wants to speak to us because we have a relationship with Him -- He loves us and wants to be with us. God's "Counselor", the Holy Spirit, is His primary communication bridge to us. God speaks to us, through the Holy Spirit, as He promised. God guides us to all truth -- to His direction for our lives. When God speaks to you, write it down, as God tells us through the prophet Habakkuk in Habakkuk 2:2-3: “And the LORD answered me: ‘Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it. For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end — it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay.'". God, often, speaks to us through the Bible, through other people, and through our circumstances. As we listen for God, we need to respond to God as Samuel did in Samuel 3:10b: "Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.". Pray specific prayers, in the Holy Spirit and in Scripture, for ourselves and for others -- be persistent. TODAY'S PRAYER: Keeping the Sabbath, Lord, will require a lot of changes in the way I am living life. Teach me, Lord, how to take the next step with this in a way that fits my unique personality and situation. Help me to trust you with all that will remain unfinished and to enjoy my humble place in your very large world. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 129). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM A CHILD OF GOD. Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His Name, He gave the right to become children of God-- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. When we think about prayer, we probably think of talking to God. Prayer certainly includes us asking God for things, but to imagine that's all it is misses the point. Prayer is a conversation, which means we must sometimes be silent and listen to God, too. In this message, Pastor Julie shares how we can do so, unpacking the concept of listening or contemplative prayer.

This is a conversation about discernment - about how we listen for and respond to the quiet, persistent voice of God in our lives. Our guest today is Trevor Hudson, a pastor and spiritual director who has spent decades wrestling with this question. As Trevor puts it, when we open our lives to Christ, he brings his whole family with him. Our faith is never just a private, individual thing - it's deeply communal. But at the same time, God has a unique calling for each of our lives. The challenge is figuring out how to hold that tension, to discern both the general will of God and his specific purpose for us. Trevor shares that for him, the foundation of discernment has been surrender - a daily yielding of his life to God, an opening of his hands to receive God's leading. It's about learning to recognize the movements of the Spirit, the subtle stirrings towards greater faith, hope and love. And it's about doing that work in community, with friends and mentors who can help us see what we might be missing. This is not always an easy path. Trevor acknowledges that God's will often involves a kind of dying and rising, a willingness to walk into difficult circumstances. But he insists that there is a deep peace that accompanies it, even amidst the struggle. So how do we tune our ears to hear that still, small voice? How do we learn to live into the unique purpose God has for our lives, while also staying rooted in community? Trevor offers wisdom hard-won over decades of faithful following. It's a conversation that just might change the way you approach the big questions of your life.Trevor Hudson is an ordained minister in the Methodist Church of Southern Africa. After spending forty years doing pastoral ministry in a local congregation, he now gives his time to lecturing, teaching, and writing in the areas of spiritual formation and spiritual direction. Throughout his life as a pastor and teacher, he has sought to prioritize the discipleship ministry of local congregations, build bridges across different "streams" within the Christian community, and relate spiritual formation to daily life within the context of our suffering world. He is married to Debbie and is the father of two children, Joni married to James, and Mark married to Marike.Trevor's Book:In Search of God's WillTrevor's Recommendation:Fully AliveJoin Our Patreon for Early Access and More: PatreonConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@allnations.usGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. Did you know most people forget about 90% of what they hear within just a week? Now consider this—according to the American Bible Society, only 16% of U.S. adults read the Bible most days of the week. Let's assume they spend a generous 10 minutes a day in Scripture. That adds up to just over an hour a week! But if 90% of what you take in fades quickly, how much of God's Word is truly shaping your life? Maybe it's time to rethink how we engage with Scripture. This is what James is concerned about today. If you are new here, we are excited to have you. Get your James Scripture Journal now so you can take notes as we study this letter together. Our text today is James 1:22: But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. — James 1:22 James doesn't beat around the bush. His advice is simple: don't just listen to God's Word—live it. He understands something we often forget: information without action is deception. Here's the stark difference James points out. One group of believers goes to church, listens to teaching, feels conviction, and gathers information about God. But they stop there. They don't act on what they've heard. The other group does the same—except they put what they learn into action. And that's where transformation begins. Hearing the Word changes nothing until you start doing the Word. So, what do you need to start doing today? Here's my suggestion. I am here every single day—literally every day! And every day, I give you an action to take. I don't do this to encourage effort-based salvation but because I believe in the power of small, consistent steps of obedience done every single day. Why? Because small spiritual actions done daily and immediately leave a more profound and lasting mark on your life than a flood of information that you never act on. It's daily obedient actions in combination with God's Word and Spirit promptings that sanctify change. James boldly confronts us all, declaring believers who hear but don't act live in self-deception. Remember: A faith that listens but doesn't live is no faith at all. #LiveTheWord, #FaithInAction, #DailyObedience Ask This: How much of God's Word are you actively applying in your daily life? What small spiritual action can you take today? Are you living out the truth you've been hearing? How can you move from listening to doing this week? Do This: Listen to the word and act quickly. Pray This: Lord, help me not only to hear Your Word but to live it boldly every day. Show me small ways to act obediently and transform my heart through daily faithfulness. Amen. Play This: I'm Listening.

By Jeremiah Burnhauser - Listening or not listening to God in the sense of doing what He says seems like a simple choice. Why then is it so hard to make the simple choice we want to? Are there things we can do to “listen“ better? The Bible shows us there are.

In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosted by Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton, we share a deeply personal story that can only be described as divine intervention. When Ashlie was experiencing a heavy heart, she felt an overwhelming prompting to stop somewhere, which led her to an unexpected encounter with friends performing worship music. This moment not only lifted her spirits but also reinforced the importance of listening to our gut instincts—or a higher power—when we feel prompted. We'll dive into the science behind why these feelings often steer us in the right direction, especially for first responders, whose intuition can be a critical guide in both their personal and professional lives. The Power of Gut Instincts: Our gut instincts are often rooted in subconscious experiences and knowledge. We'll explore how these internal cues are formed by years of experience and can lead us to make decisions that feel right, even when we can't explain them rationally. Five Scientific Reasons Why Listening to Your Gut (Amazon Affiliate) Is Often the Right Call: Intuition is Based on Experience: For first responders, your gut instincts often come from years of training and experience. Your brain picks up subtle cues from situations that help you make decisions quickly, even if you don't consciously recognize them. Your Brain Processes Information Faster Than You Realize: The brain is constantly processing information, even when you're not aware of it. This rapid processing helps you make snap judgments, which often feel like gut reactions. These judgments can be life-saving in high-stress situations. Your Body's Stress Response: Stress hormones like adrenaline can heighten your awareness, making you more attuned to your surroundings. This heightened state can lead to a clearer sense of what action to take, making gut instincts stronger and more accurate in moments of pressure. Connection to a Higher Power or Purpose: Many believe that when we are in tune with our higher power, we are more open to receiving guidance. For those with spiritual beliefs, trusting your gut can feel like following a divine prompt. We'll discuss how faith can provide clarity and peace in moments of uncertainty. Gut Feelings Activate Your Emotional Brain: Gut reactions are tied to the emotional centers of the brain, like the amygdala, which processes fear and survival instincts. This connection means that your gut can be especially accurate when navigating dangerous or high-stress environments, as your body and brain are primed to protect you. Why First Responders Need to Trust Their Instincts: In high-pressure situations, there isn't always time to logically analyze every decision. We'll explore why it's essential for first responders to trust their instincts when quick decisions can be a matter of life and death. Finding Balance Between Intuition and Logic: While gut instincts are powerful, it's important to know when to balance intuition with logical thinking. We'll discuss how to discern when your gut is guiding you correctly and when it's necessary to take a step back and evaluate the situation more thoroughly. Following Your Gut in Personal Life: Beyond the professional realm, learning to trust your gut in your personal life—like Ashlie's story of divine intervention—can lead to moments of profound connection and guidance. We'll explore how to cultivate a stronger relationship with your instincts and higher power in everyday life. Join us for this heartfelt episode as we share personal stories and explore the powerful science behind gut instincts and divine guidance. Whether you're looking for clarity in your personal life or relying on your intuition on the job, this episode will help you understand why listening to that inner voice is often the right move.
