In this special Halloween episode of Thinking Out Loud, Nathan and Cameron dive deep into It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown—exploring how wishful thinking, childlike faith, and imagination reveal profound theological truths about human desire and divine hope. Known for their thoughtful Christian analysis of culture, Nathan and Cameron unpack C.S. Lewis's argument from desire, the role of fantasy in spiritual formation, and the controversial idea that belief in figures like Santa Claus or the Great Pumpkin can be formative tutors of faith. Drawing connections between pop culture, philosophy, and Christian theology, they invite listeners to rediscover how imagination and longing point to the ultimate fulfillment found in Christ. Perfect for Christians seeking rich theological reflection on Halloween, faith, and the deeper meaning behind our stories.DONATE LINK: https://toltogether.com/donate BOOK A SPEAKER: https://toltogether.com/book-a-speakerJOIN TOL CONNECT: https://toltogether.com/tol-connect TOL Connect is an online forum where TOL listeners can continue the conversation begun on the podcast.

Welcome to more spooky season goodness. This year, at the beginning of October in fact, marks the 75th anniversary of Peanuts. It's the 59th anniversary of the animated special It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, but the 66th anniversary of the first mention of the Great Pumpkin from 1959! So to celebrate all those, and the fact that James just read this book, we're discussing the book "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, the Making of a Television Classic" by Lee Mendelson (with remembrances by Bill Melendez). We won't give it all away. You should go buy the book. But we do talk about a few neat things, regarding the making of the show, between this and other found interviews. So pour yourself a pint of pumpkin juice and enjoy with sincerity! Next week's midweek spooky season episode is on the spooky haunts of Mulligan's (Dublin) Pub. In this powerful episode of Wired for Impact, host Peter King sits down with 13‑year‑old activist Charlie Brown and his mother Lory to explore the extraordinary courage behind “We Are Charlie.” After a viral TikTok captured Charlie's raw reaction to the Charlie Kirk assassination, the family transformed shock—and a flood of death threats—into a mission centered on free speech, critical thinking, and Christian faith. We dive into Charlie's homeschooling background, his love of debate, and the rapid escalation from a single video to millions of views and a global community of teens. Lory shares how prayer, family unity, and steadfast resolve helped them navigate harassment, threats, and intense media scrutiny while staying true to their purpose.Follow Charlie on: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@wearecharlieorgInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/longlivecharlie_Merch: https://weare.bigcartel.com/Website: https://www.wearecharlie.biz/
We're 10 days into the 31 Days of Halloween and I feel like we need a palate cleanser. Recently, we've been talking about reanimating dead bodies, torturous twins, eating warm pizza off of cold corpses. I think it's time we take the holiday back to a more innocent, nostalgic time, where we only concern ourselves with what costume we're gonna wear and how much candy we can score.IT'S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, CHARLIE BROWN is a 1966 TV special directed by José Cuauhtémoc "Bill" Melendez starring Charles M. Schulz' gallery of PEANUTS characters: Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, Sally, Snoopy, the works.Linus, in lieu of trick-or-treating, elects to spend his Halloween night sitting in the pumpkin patch, waiting for The Great Pumpkin to arrive and give him a pile of presents. It's a reward for sincerity. Most of the others think Linus is crazy for believing in a C-grade Santa, but there's something admirable in Linus' valuing honesty of one's motives rather than the transactional element of trading "goodness" for material wealth. The movie operates more like a hodge-podge of PEANUTS strips and gags than as its own singular narrative but much like the ways in which memory flashes through our heads, the mosaic of musings about Halloween and the fall season leads to a highly emotional, nostalgic appreciation for the good times.Though if anyone were to ever give my kid a rock instead of candy, I'd slingshot that fucker through their teeth.---Follow, rate and review THE MOVIES wherever you listen to podcasts!Follow THE MOVIES on Instagram, Bluesky & Letterboxd

Israel's military says it's still operating in Gaza City and has warned Palestinians it's too dangerous to return. Earlier, President Trump told Israel to stop bombing the territory after Hamas said it accepted part of his peace plan -- including the release of all the hostages it's holding. But Gaza's Hamas-run civil defence agency says Israeli attacks continued overnight. Also in the programme: Japan's governing party has chosen Sanae Takaichi as its leader -- putting her on course to become the country's first woman prime minister; the Czech writer, playwright and former dissident Ivan Klima has died at the age of 94; and Peanuts, the comic strip that gave the world Snoopy and Charlie Brown, is 75 today! For 75 years, Charles Schultz's Peanuts gang has reflected our humor and hope, as well as our struggle to navigate some of life's everyday curveballs. How is it that the characters he created so poignantly reflect how we experience other people and the world around us? And why do a ragtag group of comic strip kids who debuted in newspapers in 1950 post-war America, still resonate with children and adults around the world? Andrew Blauner, author of “THE PEANUTS PAPERS: Writers and Cartoonists on Charlie Brown, Snoopy & the Gang, and the Meaning of Life,” sat down with USA TODAY's The Excerpt to discuss the 75th anniversary of the Peanuts gang and its enduring impact.Have feedback on the show? Laci and Matt revisit Interview With The Vampire (1994), a movie the podcast covered back in 2018, in the Old Testament days. Much more care and attention is given this time, because there's so much to love… and so much to be confused by. Has a movie ever been dragged down so much by its whiny-baby lead character as this movie is by Louis (Brad Pitt)? Rather than spending eternity partying with his good buddy Lestat (Tom Cruise), he just putters around and around, moaning and complaining like some unholy combination of Charlie Brown and Eeyore. And rest assured, he will tell you, at length, about how conflicted he feels about the whole “vampire” thing. So get ready. Other than that, the movie's a blast. Tom Cruise is wonderful, Kirsten Dunst gives an all-time great kid performance, and the Stan Winston makeup can't be beat. Charlie Brown. Aftershock festival. Concerts.
Happy 75th birthday, ‘Peanuts'! Charles Shulz' iconic comic strip made its debut (although Snoopy had yet to appear) on 2nd October, 1950. Peanuts would grow into a global phenomenon, running in 2,600 papers across 75 countries. At its peak, it was translated into 21 languages - but never lost its bittersweet mix of humour, disappointment, and charm, making Charlie Brown and the gang cultural touchstones for decades. The first words of the strip? “Here comes good ol' Charlie Brown… How I hate him.” This tone was a notable departure from the loud, chaotic, adventure stories that dominated ‘the funny pages' at the time. Schulz' characters weren't fighting villains or chasing treasure: they were kids, wrestling with life's quiet frustrations, hopes, and existential questions. It was postwar suburban America in miniature, disguised as a children's comic, but also aimed at the grown-ups reading the paper over their morning coffee. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider why the strip became such a hit; reveal how Schulz's own childhood got reflected in his characters; and marvel at how, despite his IP becoming a massive merchandising juggernaut, the cartoonist kept control over his creations until the day he died… Further Reading: • ‘Peanuts Comic Strip Debut October 2 1950' (TIME, 2014): https://time.com/3445127/peanuts/ • ‘Peanuts' Creator Charles Schulz Dies' (The Washington Post, 2000): https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/2000/02/14/peanuts-creator-charles-schulz-dies/f742958c-dffe-4cef-a481-b9d2cd2749c2/ • ‘Charles M. Manchester police have named the man they say attacked a synagogue in the city as 35-year-old Jihad Al-Shamie, a British citizen of Syrian descent. Kevin Flynn and Alex Taylor take on the pressing issue of the government shutdown and other local happenings. They break down the political blame game, discuss the financial impact on essential services and citizens, and expose what they call "word salad trickery" from politicians. Featured Segments The Schumer Shutdown: The hosts share clips from Vice President JD Vance and commentator Will Cain, who both argue that the shutdown is a political power play by Senate Democrats. According to Vance, the Democrats' goal is to reinstate hundreds of billions of dollars for healthcare benefits for illegal immigrants, which were cut under President Trump's administration. Cain explains the mechanism: hospitals provide care to illegal immigrants, and the federal government, and by extension the taxpayer, pays the bill. The hosts also discuss the direct impact on Americans, noting that military members, TSA agents, and federal employees are not getting paid, and services like WIC and SNAP are being delayed or shut down. Local Happenings: The show covers a lot of local news, including the area's unseasonably hot weather, with temperatures expected to hit 90 degrees on Saturday before a cold front moves in, bringing a chance of the first hard freeze next week. They also discuss agriculture and outdoors, with Bridget Riedel reporting on dry conditions, recent combine fires, and business acquisitions. Steve Carney talks about the slow start to the waterfowl season due to the heat, and the turkey opener that's set to begin on Saturday. Political Commentary: The hosts and listeners react to the shutdown, with some speculating that President Trump sees this as an opportunity to permanently downsize the federal government and fire non-essential employees. One listener calls out the Affordable Care Act (ACA), saying it was anything but affordable and made healthcare for illegal immigrants more accessible. Fun Facts: The show celebrates a number of holidays, including National Scallops Day, Guardian Angels Day, and National Custodial Workers Day. They also wish happy birthday to singer Sting, who is 74 today, and Charlie Brown, who is celebrating his 75th birthday. Standout Moments Hot Weather Woes: The hosts are in disbelief over the unseasonably hot weather, with a high of 90 degrees expected on Saturday, followed by a sudden temperature drop to the 60s on Sunday. The "Take Care with Peanuts" exhibit is at the Chicago Children's Museum now through January 4th. There sections include making music with Schroeder, learning composting with Pigpen, and having fun ice skating with Charlie Brown and Lucy.
It's an actual Peanuts theatrical movie: Snoopy Come Home! It's both more and less than the Peanuts television specials. It's the special where we learn what the relationship between Charlie Brown and Snoopy is really about.
And you thought summer was over... Well, Cloverhill Ranch is still open! For now! But, oh no! This is the last summer and then the camp closes for good! Charlie Brown and company in the new special on Apple TV+ "Snoopy Presents: A Summer Musical" are so devastated, they have to sing about it. And they do. A lot. We break it all down in episode 145. We also look at This Month in Peanuts History, a Random Strip of the Month courtesy of author Andrew Farago, and say goodbye to one of our favorite podcast segments as we check out our final "Peanuts by Schulz" episode.
We're back on our bullshit this week with TWO Peanuts specials wherein Snoopy almost leaves Charlie Brown for (the same?) girl dog.
In this week's mini-sode, we are shining the spotlight on Broadway's "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown"! This darling little show is a staple in the TYA (Theatre for Young Audiences) lexicon, and in its Broadway run it featured some VERY recognizable faces!Support the showHost/ Production/ Editing: Brennan StefanikMusic: Dylan KaufmanGraphic Design: Jordan Vongsithi@batobroadway on Instagram, Threads, and TikTokPatreon.com/batobroadway
Have you ever noticed that two people can look at the same thing but see completely different things? In the comic strip Peanuts, Lucy and Charlie Brown are cloud gazing when Lucy confidently identifies Mount Rushmore, Michael Jordan dunking a basketball, the state of Hawaii, and the Magic Kingdom. When she asks Charlie Brown what he sees, he says, “Well, I was going to say I saw a horsey and a ducky, but now I'm not gonna say nothing.” Two of us will see completely differently, even gazing at the same thing. But God always sees through a heart of compassion. In fact, if you could perform openheart surgery on God, you would see compassion all the way through. The God who has a heart of compassion also has the eyes of compassion. When you have a heart for God, you, too, will have the eyes of compassion.
