I’m not a small business owner, or a designer, or an artist….but I do love stories about people who leave corporate America and pursue their dream of creating a small business. That is exactly what Tony and Madisyn did. They moved across the country to New Orleans, Louisiana, left cushy corporate jobs, and started their paper company and design studio, Oh Hi Co.    Whether you dream of leaving your desk job to pursue a passion project, are an artist needing motivation to turn your skills into a business, or are just in need of a little lighthearted motivation, you’ll love this conversation with Tony and Madisyn.    In the spirit of supporting small businesses, I have partnered with Kora Fitness, an athletic apparel company that donates to charity each time you make a purchase. I spend so much time in athletic clothes, so I partnered with Kora to bring Roadmap to the Real World listeners a special discount. Use the code ‘kimiya15’ at checkout to save 15% off your entire order. Their women’s clothes are so cute and made of the most incredible material. The men’s clothing is so stylish and made of amazing quality fabric for in and out of the gym!    This holiday season I challenge you to support small businesses, because when you do, you’re supporting a dream. 016: Let's Talk About Sex Baby!

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 28, 2018 55:25

On the Roadmap to the Real World Podcast I love digging into topics that we all face in our lives, but are never really taught to navigate. If I were to think of a topic that falls perfectly into that definition, it’s sex! Sex is something we all deal with in our relationships, a topic that has been highlighted in the media through the #MeToo movement, an awkward conversation we have to have with our kids, a major component of our personal health, and the cornerstone of our emotional and physiological needs as humans.    So why don’t we talk about it more? Why are we too often taught to repress it rather than explore and express it in a healthy and responsible way? I’m here to break that mold, take the taboo topics, the uncomfortable topics, but the topics that deserve a moment in the spotlight, and dig deep into them without holding back.    In this episode I am talking to sex therapist from Revive Therapy, Meryl Cohen. Meryl has a mile long resume including working as a sex educator and counseling couples and individuals for over 30 years. We hold nothing back as we unpack topics like porn, infidelity, orgasm, foreplay, love languages, overcoming sexual trauma, and managing an imbalance of sexual desires in a relationship. I ask questions submitted by our Roadmappers community and Meryl holds nothing back in her answers.    I hope this episode teaches you something, de-mystifies sex education, makes you feel like you’re not alone, and maybe even sparks a conversation between you and your partner. If you enjoyed this episode, I would love if you shared it with your partner, your friends, maybe a parent you know with a child going through puberty who may need some guidance or resources on how to navigate that ever dreaded birds and bees conversation.  You can find the full show notes as well as links to all the products Meryl mentioned on the podcast website. Alberto tells us what it takes to build a company from the ground up, what the early phases as CTO of a tech company look like, and gives genius advice on how to turn your passion into a feasible career. Takeaways from this conversation: When choosing between opportunities, identify the fleeting one and take a chance on an offer that you may never get again. If your passion doesn’t directly translate into a career, don’t abandon it, get creative and find a way to apply the skills you have to the topic you love. Seek calculated chaos – life is chaotic, but if you worry about things that are outside of your control you’ll miss the fun. Adrienne Brady, also known as @appetitiessays basically lives the dream. She graduated with a degree in biology but while working a job she hated, she fell in love with food photography and decided to make a career out of what she loved. She quit her job and is now Marketing & Media Coordinator at SavCo Hospitality in Ann Arbor Michigan, a position they basically created for her. Adrienne tells us what it means to be in marking, how to turn your side hustle into a career you love, and has so much advice for anyone who hasn’t feel like they have found they niche yet. Takeaways from this conversation: Take classes outside of your major, you never know what you’ll fall in love with! If you think you want to pursue a career path, shadow someone to make sure you’ll like it! It is OKAY to switch your major and not graduate 4 years! Don’t risk spending your life doing something you hate just so you can graduate in four years! If you are inspired to create, just start somewhere. If you wait for all the conditions to be perfect, you’ll never start anything! You don’t need a degree in marketing to get a job in marketing – refine your skills (in Adrienne’s case, food photography) and start building your portfolio. Hustle with confidence to achieve what you’re working toward.   Keep up with Adrienne on Instagram and on her blog!  Keep up with us on Instagram and Twitter and all show notes are on our website!

002: Living in Alignment with Your Core Values

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 20, 2018 15:57

Ahhhh..,my first “midterm” episode. Yes, midterm as in midterm exam. Don’t break into a cold sweat. There isn’t actually going to be an exam! When I think of a midterm, I think of a checkpoint. A time to stop and reflect on where I am now, and where I need to be by the time finals roll around. Midterm episodes will give us an opportunity to do some self-reflection and soul searching in terms of who we are, where we are, and where we want to be. During these episodes I would suggest taking the time to jot down some notes so that months or even years from now you can look back and see how far you have come, how you have changed, and all you have accomplished. In this episode I talk about the general process of turning an aspiration into a reality:  Write your goals and dreams down.Synthesizing abstract thoughts into words on paper allows you analyze their feasibility, determine what it is going to take to achieve them, and start thinking about what it would look like to take the first step toward them. Develop the deep and genuine belief that you can achieve what you’ve written. One of my favorite quotes (though I don’t have any idea who said it) is “your mind has to arrive at the destination before your body does”. This means that in order for anything to be achieved, we must see it in our mind first, then move toward it with a relentless persistence. In most cases, you are the only obstacle standing in your own way, once you allow yourself to believe that your goals are achievable, you can take the first step toward accomplishing them. Speak it out loud.I am such a firm believer that when you speak something out loud, you put it into the universe, and you have taken the first step toward making it a reality. Whether you end up accomplishing what you have told people you are going to do because you’d be ashamed if you did, or whether speaking it out loud gives you a deeper belief that it is possible, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that you exclaim it with confidence and work until it is your reality. To know where you want to go, you have to know where you are, who you are, and where you want to be. Obviously quantifying a successful or fulfilling life is difficult because for everyone it looks like something completely different. The best way I have found to measure success in my life is to define my core values, and make sure I’m living in accordance to my core values in every aspect of my life. WHAT ARE CORE VALUES? As you can tell from the name, core values are determined by who you are today and who you work towards being on a daily basis. Metaphors are my jam – so if you think or your life as house, your core values are the blueprint and foundation of the house. The kind of tiles on the floors and the colors you paint the walls are the frills, they don’t determine the strength and structure of the house.  Too often we envision our life as a destination with phrases like “when I get there, this is what it will look like”. In reality, the actual living part is more like a roadmap (pun absolutely intended). On a day-to-day basis, what turns are you taking? What decisions are you making? Once you get to the “destination”, all you’ll actually have is the culmination of what has occurred on the journey. HOW DO YOU IDENTIFY CORE VALUES? It is just a matter of being really honest with yourself and being very introspective. HERE is an exhaustive list of core values that I like to use. Scan through the list and write down 10 or so that resonate with you the most. From those 10, try to narrow it down to 2-5 that are central to your being. In this case, less is more! Defineyour core values. Make specific and achievable goals under each of your core values. WHAT NEXT? Now that you have identified who you are, what that means, and how you want to improve upon yourself it is important to think about how each of your core values show up in different aspects of your life. How do they show up in your work, your marriage, your friendships? Ask yourself: Are there any areas of my life in which I am straying from my core values? What does it look like when I am at my best and in alignment with my core values? Who benefits when I live in alignment with my core values? What steps can I take on a daily basis that will improve my quality of life and the quality of those around me? I am a huge proponent of periodically writing your core values, their definitions, and your goals for each. Inevitably the definition of your core values and maybe even your core values themselves will change over time and it is so powerful to look back on who you were, how you’ve grown, and how far you’ve come. I hope you enjoy this episode of the Roadmap to the Real World Podcast! Episode 3 is an amazing interview with Adrienne Brady. She graduated with a biology degree and had no clue what to do next. While working a job she hated, a food blog that she had started as a hobby turned into a passion and lead her to her current position as Media and Marketing Coordinator for a restaurant group.   Follow along on Instagram, Twitter, and on our Website!!
