Welcome back to another episode of Women Petpreneurs! In today's Book Club edition, host Mary Oquendo is joined by Denise Heroux as they dive into the colorful world of "Surrounded by Idiots" by Thomas Erikson. Mary and Denise share their candid thoughts on the book's unique approach to understanding personalities through color-coding—red, yellow, green, and blue—and how these insights can reshape everything from work dynamics and leadership to our relationships at home.Along the way, they laugh about their own personality colors (spoiler: neither of them is a “blue”), swap stories about work and family, and discuss how knowing both strengths and weaknesses can help petpreneurs navigate staff management and difficult clients. With plenty of real-world examples, a few confessions of organizational chaos, and practical advice for leaders and business owners, this episode brings both wisdom and fun to the world of personality assessment.Whether you manage a team, serve clients, or simply want to better understand yourself and those around you, you won't want to miss this down-to-earth conversation about what it really means to be “surrounded by idiots”—and why that just might be your superpower.

Content note: This episode discusses manipulative and abusive relationship dynamics that may be triggering for some readers. Have you ever been in a relationship with someone who made you question your own reality?  Maybe it's romantic, familial, or even just a friendship where every disagreement somehow leaves you thinking, "Did I misremember that? I really thought I said that out loud... maybe I didn't?" If you're nodding your head right now, you're not alone. For years, my community has been asking me to break down how to identify narcissists and sociopaths because the confusion around these two personality types can literally be dangerous.  When you can't tell what you're dealing with, you can't protect yourself effectively. After 25 years as a licensed psychotherapist, I've seen too many brilliant, capable people get trapped in relationships that slowly eroded their sense of self.  The good news? Once you understand the key differences between narcissistic personality disorder and antisocial personality disorder (which includes sociopathy), you can spot the red flags early and protect your peace. In this episode of Vertical Playpen, Phil and Alan Krieger discuss the significance of understanding different communication styles. Alan shares insights from his extensive experience in team development, emphasizing that effective communication is not just about conveying a message but also about recognizing and adapting to the communication preferences of others. They explore the TEAM communication model, which categorizes individuals based on their task orientation and decision-making styles, highlighting the importance of tailoring communication to foster better collaboration and understanding in teams.   Communication is a skill that needs to be practiced. People have different communication preferences that affect interactions. Our intentions as communicators can be misinterpreted by others. Respectful behavior varies between individuals and contexts. Understanding communication styles can improve team dynamics. Quick decision-making can be more efficient in many situations. The TEAM model categorizes communication styles into four types. Task-oriented individuals prefer direct and efficient communication. Some people prioritize relationship-building over task completion. Tailoring communication to the audience is crucial for effectiveness. In this enlightening episode, Tyler Jorgenson sits down with long-time friend and legendary performance coach Mandy Keene to explore the invisible roadblocks holding even the most successful entrepreneurs back. From imposter syndrome to misunderstood personality types, Mandy breaks down the truth behind what really drives high performers—and what secretly slows them down. With over 25 years of coaching experience, Mandy shares how growing up in a “self-help household” led her to become a coach at just 21. She dives into her work with understand.me, a platform that layers multiple personality assessments to help entrepreneurs lead better, build stronger teams, and operate in full alignment with their core strengths. Tyler and Mandy swap insights, jokes, and truths about the mental games entrepreneurs play—and how knowing your strengths isn't just self-help fluff, but an actual business advantage. The episode also takes a heart-centered turn as Mandy opens up about her recent divorce and how she reframed it not as a failure, but a graduation. She discusses the power of support systems, why even coaches need coaching, and how vulnerability and leadership go hand-in-hand. If you've ever wondered why success sometimes still feels unfulfilling, or how to finally lean into your unique genius, this conversation will absolutely resonate.------Top TakeawaysEven high performers battle fear and shame. Imposter syndrome isn't a beginner problem—many seven- and eight-figure entrepreneurs still face it daily.Personality isn't the whole picture—but it's a powerful starting point. Mandy explains how tools like DISC, Myers-Briggs, and Enneagram layered together give a holistic view of someone's “entrepreneurial avatar.”Your biggest growth might be in the place you're resisting the most. You hold the door open. You say yes when you mean no. You put others first—always. It feels like the right thing to do… but is it costing you more than you realize? In this episode, Scott Barry Kaufman, Ph.D.—Columbia professor, psychologist, and author of Rise Above—joins Dave Asprey to expose the psychology of victim vs. empowerment mindsets. He reveals how toxic altruism, external validation, and emotional fragility keep people stuck—and how you can reclaim your confidence, set boundaries, and create a life of true growth. Dr. Kaufman, one of the world's most cited scientists, shares cutting-edge research on self-actualization, resilience, and the hidden mental loops that shape your success. If you've ever felt stuck in self-doubt, drained from over-giving, or afraid to take up space, this conversation will help you break free.
