In honour of our newest segment this season, we take you through the last week in the Republic, with an extended version of “What's Up”. Listen as I share my opinions on the stories making the headlines (or those that should have made headlines?). ~ Originally aired 18th July, 2021 #BrotherResistance #VaccineUpdates #Pfizer #Borders #DigitalTransformation #SolarProject #SOAPBOX #GetOnYourSOAPBOX #WhatsUp #TrinidadandTobago #Economy #EnergyEpisodes
After we deal with an eventful week in our What's Up segment, we turn to the 6th part of our discussion with Andrew Hosein. We will be picking up where we left off in the previous episode, discussing feed in tariffs, renewable energy projects in T&T, the outlook on Point Lisas, the energy sector, renewables sector, and the outlook on the energy sector in Guyana. ~ Originally aired 11th July, 2021 #SOAPBOX #energy #EnergyEpisodes #Season5 #Podcast #GetOnYourSOAPBOX
We're back! Discussing the questions that you asked, in these energy episodes! We are looking at revenue, taxes and savings in the energy sector including the Supplemental Petroleum Tax; Heritage and Stabilization Fund; should we implement a Carbon Tax?; the main renewable energy projects underway in Trinidad and Tobago and a bit about electricity generation and its link to the energy sector! In other words, we covered a lot! ~ Originally aired 4th July, 2021 #SOAPBOX #energy #EnergyEpisodes #Season5 #Podcast #GetOnYourSOAPBOX
In this episode we get to part 4 of 6 of the energy special with Andrew Hosein. We talk about prices - global market prices; prices at the pump; what was the fuel subsidy and the advantages and disadvantages of fixed prices at the pump; LPG and we even touch on CNG - CNG vehicles vs Hybrid/Electric vehicles and so much more! But before that, we chat a bit about the headlines - Vaccines to party in Barbados; Sex Offenders Registry in T&T; Journalism under fire in T&T; and Michael B Jordan launched a rum call ‘J'ouvert'. ~ Originally aired 20th June 2021 #GetOnYourSOAPBOX #SOAPBOX #Season5 #Energy #EnergyPrices #CNG #LPG #WhatsUp
Back with the 3rd session of the energy sector episodes, touching on local content, other players in the energy sectors (those indirectly involved), and of course we get to the money. Andrew Hosein joins us again as we look at who sets the price of oil and gas, forecasting the price, what impact this has on the National Budget, why we peg that budget to an oil and gas price and the signal this sends to economic players. We also touch on the impact of COVID-19 on demand and prices in the energy sector and end at the influence of OPEC. This episode should take you one step further in your preparation for the next national budget presentation. ~ Originally aired 13th June 2021 #SOAPBOX #GetOnYourSOAPBOX #EnergySector #EnergyEpisodes #TrinidadandTobago #Economy
In this episode, we take a break from the energy sector episodes for a moment to discuss COVID-19 vaccines, particularly in the context of Trinidad and Tobago and where we are in response to the pandemic. More importantly, we have Virology Laboratory Technologist Neeta Oudit as our guest, and she will be discussing: What a vaccine is and what it does, how these COVID-19 vaccines are made, vaccine effectiveness vs efficacy and the risks and benefits of getting vaccinated. As a frontline worker, we thank Neeta for all that she is doing to keep the population safe, and for taking the time to chat with us! ~Originally aired 6th June 2021~ #GetOnYourSOAPBOX #SOAPBOX #Season5 #VACCINES
In this episode of SOAPBOX we continue our introduction to the energy sector and get further into our Petrotrin discussion and move on to fuel distributors and peddlers and the Petroleum Act - which will help you understand the discussions surrounding the sale of NP stations and what was, up to this year, a regulated price for fuels. This sets the tone for our next discussion on the subsidy, who sets the price of oil and gas, how the budget /policy affects the sector and how the sector affects budgets. Key Takeaway: AH points out that "natural gas" is NOT what we call "gas" which is gasoline! ~Originally aired 30th May 2021~ #SOAPBOX #SB5 #Energy #EnergySector #EnergyEpisodes #SOAPBOXcbean #GetOnYourSOAPBOX #Podcast
In this episode we have two guests! Andrew Hosein brings us the energy sector background and context, the products, services and companies involved in the energy industry and what they do. We also discuss Petrotrin and its shake-up, as well as some of the terms related to the sector that you must have heard before and what they mean. But first, Christophe R. Rodriquez tells us ‘What's Up!?' with the State of Emergency! ~Originally aired 23rd May 2021~

This season, we had our first guest, took viewer comments, had some serious conversations, gave ideas/tips and HAD FUN! Despite the pandemic, the Soca for 2021 did not disappoint and in this wrap-up we re-cap Carnival 2021 and Season 2…but we’re not done yet… stay tuned to our social media to see what we’re up to next! #SOCA #SOCAorDie #SOAPBOX #Carnival2021
~Originally aired 14th Feb 2021 Our very first guest on #SOD, the “humble, happy creator” RisAnne Martin joins us! RisAnne is a wearable art and costume designer, a stylist and a youth mentor. You may know her for her Brown Cotton Caribbean fashion brand; as a designer for mas band Lost Tribe; for her Youtube Channel “Style by Style we Stand”; for styling some of the biggest names in SOCA; for her youth mentorship and workshops throughout the Caribbean region; or for her work in the advertising industry. We get into a bit of it all as we chat about her process, her motivation, sustainable fashion and sustainable mas. She shares her artistic journey and some inspiration! #SOCAorDie #SOAPBOX #Carnival2021 #CarnivalArts #CreativeSector #SOD
Well, the debate was hot with this one! Which one was the better riddim: Dougla Riddim or 4D Riddim? We also need production experts to settle our debate on the 4D Riddim – somebody get #Swappi or #1stKlase on the line please! The crew discusses best riddims, how soca riddims have evolved, if new artistes should get on a riddims and what makes a good riddim. Do you agree with us? Tell us your favourite riddim in the comments! #SOCAorDie #Carnival2021 #SOAPBOX #Podcast
People love Soca! They also like #SOCAorDIE! We’re happy to get the conversation going with our viewers and listeners and they’ve been sending us some of their comments and questions! In this episode we check-in with Soca lovers and #SOD listeners. Special thanks you Duane, Harmony Farrell, @SMB and @soca_jetsetta for their comments. Send us your text, audio or video comments and you too could be featured in future SOCA or Die content! Also, listen to our audio-only podcast on sound streaming platforms. #SOCAorDie #SOD #SOAPBOX #soapboxcbean
#Culture-in-culture: The sub-genre continues to grow and has been a staple of Trinbago culture. We get into some of the panel’s earliest memories of Chutney Soca, some of the best songs, big names and…what is a discussion on Chutney Soca without mentioning Chris Garcia…multiple times! As usual we talk about the serious side of things too like music export strategy; audience targeting and some socio-cultural reflections. We don’t pretend to know the full scope of Chutney Soca, but we’re gonna talk about it anyway! We have lots of questions and maybe you can help… #SOCAorDie #SOD #season2 #SOAPBOX #soapboxcbean #ChutneySoca #Carnival2021 #podcast
In this episode we relive some of the best music video moments in Soca and trace music video trends over the years from the TV era videos: Denise and Ghetto Flex / Machel and Beenie Man to the Synergy era: Surge etc.; to the current Youtube, new era: Machel and Angela Hunte / Nessa Preppy. ...we also trace Swappi’s transformation #BridgertonSwappi Are female artistes “out-videoing” the guys? Tell us some of you favourite or most memorable videos! #dontskitme
Despite the pandemic, artistes continue to entertain us – on social media, without singing! Let’s discuss how artistes are using social platforms to engage us, how this changes the dynamic between artistes and listeners and what it means for their brand. Are artistes effectively using social media to build and expand their brand – intentionally or unintentionally? Which ones are “winning the internet”? We touch on this as well as on the initial position of the NCC to not host any (virtual) events for the Carnival season and how important it is to stimulate economic activity locally, despite not having tourists.
It’s us again, we’re discussing virtual fetes…or are they really virtual concerts? Because they are two different things right? Either way, it’s likely that half the panel will not attend but let's recap some of the past virtual events and what will set future events apart. It's also safe to say that we've copyrighted '#socajesus'! The fete calendar looks really different this year. How much are you willing to pay for a virtual concert/fete? Follow us on IG and Twitter @soapboxcbean to keep the conversation going! #SOCAorDie #SOD
We’re back at it, talking about some of the releases for 2021. We even touched on the Soca Parang offerings from Christmas (yes! ALL Soca matters!). Anyway, we deal with the new songs that are ahead of the pack and discuss whether without the fetes and the parade: is 2021 a good year for new artistes? What does it mean for Soca in general? Would artistes “save” power releases for 2022? What do you think?
We reach! In this episode we recap the 2020 season (I don’t know whose idea it was to try to do that on Ash Wednesday but clearly that did not work…so we’re doing it now!). We revisit the Road March and Soca Monarch competitions and of course we get into some serious conversation about what’s next for International Soca Monarch, how the competition could be improved and most importantly, how do we create meaning and value behind it. Follow us on social media @SOAPBOXcbean and subscribe to our channels. #SOAPBOX #SOCAorDie #SOD # Carnival2021
In the Finale we wrap up what was perhaps our quickest season yet! Full of interviews and insights, this season started earlier than anticipated but our guests were on-board to get on their SOAPBOX at a moment's notice. To our panels, listeners and viewers - THANK YOU! We'll be back for Season 5 of SOAPBOX! and for Season 2 of our spin-off SOCA or Die! What’s in a budget? In this episode, instead of just doing a recap of the Minister of Finance’s presentation, I take you through the budget process and budget debate. Typically, the tradition is that commentators rush to be the first and immediately respond to the Minister’s presentation…but is that the best practice? Especially given that the Minister’s presentation or “Budget Day” is really only the beginning of the debate and only the tip of the iceberg. In the recap, we go through what stood out to me from the “Budget Day” presentation, key measures announced by the government and the Opposition Leader’s response. We go through the macro-economic outlook and some key figures presented to the nation. #GetOnYourSOAPBOX Look out for our video cast and follow us on Facebook, YouTube, iTunes, Soundcloud, Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts and our website www.soapboxpodcast.com
In this episode we recap the swearing-in of the new government in Trinidad and Tobago and some of the surprise Ministers and portfolios. I give my perspectives on the things that we should look out for and some of the shifts within the Cabinet. Definitely a lot for us to delve into in the future. We discuss the appointments to the Senate: government, opposition and independent senators. As the Twelfth Republican Parliament takes shape, we have some exciting things in store! Now more than ever before we are ready to #GetOnOurSOAPBOX! Look out for our video cast and follow us on Facebook, YouTube, iTunes, Soundcloud, Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts and our website www.soapboxpodcast.com !
After an external perspective in the last episode, we reflect locally on the General Elections 2020 in Trinidad and Tobago. We are chatting with Daniella James and Daryll Griffth, and this time we dig a little deeper into the campaigns – the songs, the ads, the manifestos and the lead up to the polls. We consider youth participation; misinformation; and the role of social media in the campaign. Hear about the voting experience given the pandemic and our ideas on what the next administration and future elections might look like! #GetOnYourSOAPBOX Look out for the videocast on Facebook and Youtube!
In this episode, we get an external voice to discuss the result of the Trinidad and Tobago election and provide some political and regional perspectives on the Trinidad and Tobago. We chat about international observers; what is next for the leaders of various political parties; my revelations about politics in Trinidad and Tobago; marginal seats and third parties; and the regional outlook and Caribbean elections this year and those to come. It’s a long one! So grab a snack! NB: Data from the Elections and Boundaries Commission was not public at the time of recording, due to recounts taking place in five (5) constituencies. Episode Guide (to be updated soon): • Initial reaction to the result • Third parties • Voter turnout • Leadership and what next • Recounts and Marginal Seats • Observers • Regional outlook and elections to come Look out for the videocast on Facebook and Youtube: SOAPBOX (Caribbean) – for this and other episodes this season! #GetOnYourSOAPBOX
With rights, come responsibilities. Not voting is effectively picking a side anyway... without registering your views. Historical oppression, voter suppression and active participation – there is always a choice to be made. Regardless of who you vote for, civic engagement is necessary in this "group project" and passive citizenship must be a thing of the past. The most effective way to #GetOnYourSOAPBOX is to go out and vote!
Part 3/3: In this final segment we continue exploring the website, looking at the economic statistics that could be used to help the electorate make an informed decision. We explore new opportunities for socio-economic data analysis and explaining it, in layman's terms, to the public. As I said in part 1, data without analysis is sometimes just as dangerous as no data at all! The Picong Party is working to ensure that data is accurate, credible and well analysed. What's even more useful is that the platform includes the manifesto of all parties contesting the elections. They do so in a matrix-type set-up which allows the public to look at particular policy areas and compare manifestos, side-by-side! A lot went into this platform and there is definitely more to come! Can’t wait to see how it grows! #GetOnYourSOAPBOX #Vote2020 www.soapboxpodcast.com www.thepicongparty.com Check out the video of our chat, soon to be released on Facebook and Youtube.
Part 2/3: Picong Party shows us their platform and we get into some of the polling trends in various constituencies! I was so excited, can you tell? This information would definitely help our country to move past (what in my estimation is) lazy political analysis of “tribal voting” into more in-depth research and analysis of how we vote, why we vote and who we support from cycle to cycle. We discuss how and why this data is being collected and presented in one space. If you want to see us explore the functionality of the website, check out our soon-to-be-released video-cast on Facebook and Youtube! #GetOnYourSOAPBOX #Vote2020 www.soapboxpodcast.com www.thepicongparty.com
In this three-part special, we chat with Duane Swift about The Picong Party – a platform dedicated to elections in Trinidad and Tobago and data to inform the electorate. We get into how the platform developed, the motivation behind the project, his team and so much more! There is definitely a need and young people are filling the gap! Well! We are back for Season 4 sooner than anticipated..because the election bell has rung...sooner than anticipated! We wanted to be on our SOAPBOX for it. We’ve come to the end of another season…can you believe it! This is the Season 3 finale! In this episode I give an update on what I’ve been up to, what’s been happening and a recap of this season’s episodes. I also give a sneak peek into what’s to come next season. Each season, we try to improve on our podcast and this season is no different. We launched our website www.soapboxpodcast.com and our new podcast SOCA or Die! Thank you so much to our Season 3 guests, listeners and all of you who got on your SOAPBOX for one cause or the other at this time in our history. While we are off air, remember to STAY on your SOAPBOX! #SBSeason3 #GetOnYourSOAPBOX
Hashtags are cute, but concerted ACTION is the only way to ensure change. Some expect that recent Black Lives Matter protests will subside. Even if they were to, I can say with absolute certainty that if these racial injustices are not addressed, we will be back here again. Bob Marley warned us decades ago...everywhere will be war. I am who I am because of the resistance and revolt of my ancestors. So if you are looking for someone to denounce the protests - you will not find her here! I was born because of blood, sweat, tears, sacrifice and fire... #GetOnYourSOAPBOX
Failure to acknowledge racial inequality is how it becomes a noose around society's neck. The failure to confront race and racial inequities is why we cannot "move on" from slavery. Systemic racism and racist attitudes must become a thing of the past. The present generation should be at pains to stand up against it. I share my own experience and thoughts just to say that every experience will be different but that does not negate the collective movement and should not negate the coming together and support. How do we encourage real support and ensured recourse? #BLM #GetOnYourSOAPBOX!
Many of us "non-essentials" have been in isolation for a number of weeks, sheltering from the COVID-19 pandemic. While we were wrapped up in "covidmania" a number of things were happening in our local, regional and international landscape that we should keep our eye on as we exit lockdown and return to some semblance of normalcy. #GetOnYourSOAPBOX.
Having gone through some of the problems and recommendations made by a MATT who, in a ‘wrong and strong’ way is attempting to suggest that everyone else is the problem and not them, we come to a critical juncture in “journalism” in Trinidad and Tobago. MATT, at least from the outside looking in, appears to have missed the perfect opportunity to regulate / professionalize / bring some sort of clarity to what and who passes as a journalist in Trinidad and Tobago. When this country was in the midst of discussions on the Whistleblower Protection Bill and Cybercrime Bill, elements of which the MATT did not support, the MATT did not have the foresight to address the same question they are asking now: who is / should be accredited media…? These issues of media training, professionalism, reporting and accreditation are longstanding. Although it has become glaring over the last month due to increased public attention, these issues are certainly not going away post-pandemic unless addressed.
The Media Association of Trinidad and Tobago is acting like that one co-worker that does the bare minimum, but somehow has the time to tell everyone else how to do their job. So, I tell MATT how they could better spend their time to add value to the lives of citizens! Lolol The letter from MATT regarding the virtual press conferences did not address any of the shortcomings on the part of reporters and media houses that the public has witnessed and complained about during coverage of this pandemic. Instead, in large part it can be characterized only as a shifting of blame. The letter leads me to believe that: 1. Editors are of the opinion that they are above reproach or should not be “corrected” 2. The MATT at best may be a little misguided in their role and at worst have given up their responsibility of being the independent fourth estate 3. There is some disconnect between public interest and MATT’s interest…
Wash you hands, wash your minds and wash your hearts! At a time like this, when COVID-19 has become a global pandemic, reaching the shores of Trinidad and Tobago, we can least afford to descend into tribalism and party politics. This moment calls for us to be good humans! Not only washing our hands properly, but helping the most vulnerable amongst us. How we treat with the virus and each other in the weeks to come will determine how far the ripple effects are felt. You may need just enough panic to get things in place and be prepared but definitely not too much panic to the point of paralysis and fear. Remember: only share information from reputable sources! #GetonyourSOAPBOX
Will Conch Shell capture the Road March title!? One panelist is leading the campaign - a convincing one at that! In this episode we break down Soca songs that captured the title and those that capture the spirit of the parade - two kinds in fact. We give out more awards and consider other existential questions:... what is a Carnival without an Iwer? Do we owe Kes a Road March? SOCA or Die! #SOCAorDie #SOAPBOX #fortheculture #TrinidadandTobago
Welcome to the podcast! Before we get into the music and the industry and the artistes and Carnival, meet the crew... SOCA or Die! #SOCAorDie #SOAPBOX #fortheculture #TrinidadandTobago

The bass and that loud speaker, make it sound so much better! Songs that mash up fetes! That’s what we were trying to talk about, but in between we went off the rails a little lolol. Needless to say, Grenada and St. Vincent registering heavy on the fete-turnover scale! SOCA or Die! #SOCAorDie #SOAPBOX #fortheculture #TrinidadandTobago
Woman and soca, woman in soca; quality artistes, quality music but is there a Queen? Can we even agree on a top 5? We talk about perceptions of female artistes and perceptions about Soca music itself. What is for sure is that these women have carved out a space for themselves! SOCA or Die! #SOCAorDie #SOAPBOX #fortheculture #TrinidadandTobago

In our first episode we discuss Soca, playing Dancehall in fetes, legends in Soca and Soca go global. We get deeper, looking at cultural confidence and erasure and whether or not everyone is doing their part to promote the industry. SOCA or Die! #SOCAorDie #SOAPBOX #fortheculture #TrinidadandTobago
...and we're back! 4D riddim, the "bucket economy", conspiracy theories, "the root" and all. We focus on the young / new artistes and their place in the industry. We even give out some national awards! SOCA or Die! #SOCAorDie #SOAPBOX #fortheculture #TrinidadandTobago
Jonathan Bhagan joins us as we discuss his work with victims of abuse and his advocacy with the Caribbean Committee Against Sex Crimes. That work has contributed to the passing of legislation in Trinidad and Tobago that will allow for public access to an online sex offender registry. We discuss this and more as Jonathan gets on the #SOAPBOX!
In this episode we look at the National Budget (2020) in Trinidad and Tobago. We discuss how this country budgets, revised estimates for 2019 and progress on existing government plans. Some of the main elements of the budget presentation are also highlighted. In part 2 to come, we will do a little more analysis when we consider the estimates for 2020, discuss the response of the opposition and look at some of the proposals from the budget presentation that grabbed headlines. #JoinUs #GetOnYourSOAPBOX
