Rising electricity demand. Heightened geopolitical tension. Fragility in energy markets. These are some of the big stories shaping the energy transition outlined in the International Energy Agency's newest World Energy Outlook. Even as the IEA says the world is shifting from the "Age of Oil" to the "Age of Electricity," we are still far from achieving net-zero targets. And the tensions highlighted in the latest Energy Outlook illustrate how difficult the transition will be. This week, host Jason Bordoff talks with Tim Gould about the 2024 World Energy Outlook, published in October. They discuss the significant progress countries have made on the energy transition, and the structural shifts in economies and energy use that lie ahead. Tim is the International Energy Agency's chief energy economist. As part of his role, he co-leads the World Energy Outlook. Tim joined the IEA in 2008 as a specialist on Russian and Caspian energy. Prior to joining the IEA, he worked on European and Eurasian energy issues in Brussels.
In publishing the 2024 edition of its Energy Outlook, bp aims to contribute to the wider debate about the factors shaping the global energy system. The two main scenarios this year are Current Trajectory and Net Zero. What are the key trends driving the transition? How might the energy system evolve? I'm delighted to be joined by Spencer Dale, bp's Chief Economist, to discuss these questions. bp Energy Outlook 2024: https://www.bp.com/content/dam/bp/business-sites/en/global/corporate/pdfs/energy-economics/energy-outlook/bp-energy-outlook-2024.pdf
So long summer! Peter and Jackie are back in the studio and are discussing the energy news from the past few months. They kick off the podcast by discussing political developments in the United States and Canada. Then, they examine the drop in clean energy stocks over the summer and the weaker market sentiment, including the rapid decline in BC's low carbon fuel standard (LCFS) credit price. Lastly, they discuss the low prices for natural gas in Alberta, which averaged only $C 0.60/GJ in August. John Rubino, publisher of his newsletter over at Substack joins us to share his thoughts on the gold price in the near term (price floor being $2,000) and longer term ($5,000-$10,000 gold in 3- 5 years). We also discuss why John is now thinking energy prices will struggle moving forward. To wrap up we look back to the US job data, released on Friday, and why John sees many issues with the data looking past the headline number. On the gold investment front, and more short term, John sees $2,000 being a floor for price and should drive better earnings and margins for the miners. Combine this with lower energy prices, potentially generalist investors will take notice and could help the gold stocks play catch up to the higher gold price. For recent economic data we recap the jobs data from Friday. John outlines why he thinks "things are a mess" and to not just focus on the headline numbers.

Julia Marie reports on the upcoming cosmic energies at play in September. The key word for the month? Balance. The energy from the intense summer is slowing down and the Equinox will bring a time of balancing polarities. Reflect on old patterns and insecurities that may reemerge. There are major astrological transits happening in September, including the end of Venus and Mercury retrogrades and the beginning of a new one when Jupiter begins a backward dance. Use this time to clear out energies that no longer serve you and to set intentions for growth. Create a routine that includes self-care, exercise, leisure, and work balance, organizing and prioritizing, and add mindfulness meditation to daily routines. On September 23rd, I'll be leading a guided meditation for the Equinox. The energy transition is a hot-button issue in Australia. It is the world's largest exporter of coal and its efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions have consistently fallen short of its peers. It also faces serious risks from climate change, with damages from flooding, wildfires, and heat waves worsening nearly every year. At the same time, Australia is one of the countries best situated to benefit from a transition to clean energy. It has immense wind and solar resources and is a leading exporter of critical minerals such as lithium, which are needed to manufacture clean energy technologies. What will it take for Australia to emerge as a leader in the clean energy economy? How can policymakers untangle the difficult politics of climate change? And how is the energy transition shaping Australia's relations with other countries? This week host Jason Bordoff talks with former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull about how the Australian government is approaching the energy transition. He was Australia's 29th prime minister, serving in the role from 2015 to 2018. Prime Minister Turnbull began his parliamentary career in 2004, including stints as the Minister for the Environment and Water Resources and later as Minister for Communications. After leaving politics in 2019, Prime Minister Turnbull joined the private equity firm KKR as a senior advisor. He is also the inaugural chair of the Global Hydrogen Organisation and will become president of the International Hydropower Association on October 31, 2023.
As ESG's contours and penetration continue to increase, so have the decibels of debate. Granted, energy pragmatism remains resolute on achieving long-term goals of a decarbonised world, yet how to achieve security of supply, keep prices affordable and ensure sustainability in the transition – i.e. the energy trilemma pillars – remains at the heart of the conversation. In this week's podcast, Ehsan Khoman, Head of Commodities, ESG and Emerging Markets Research (EMEA), discusses the global energy outlook in the ESG context of what it will take to ensure a just and orderly transition. He believes that the right response to today's challenges is a matter of “and” not “or” and highlights four approaches in squaring the energy trilemma around resiliency today to tap value creation tomorrow.
James Pomeroy explains why there has been a remarkable turnaround in supply chains, Charles Swabey examines just how reliant the global economy is on fossil fuels and Wai-Shin Chan assesses the growing anti-ESG sentiment in the US. The Volkswagen Group has committed $130 billion towards electrification and digitization until 2028, increasing its share of total investment from 52% to 68% relative to 2018. The European Commission has officially announced its Critical Raw Materials Act and Net Zero Industry Act as its counterpart to the US' Inflation Reduction Act in an attempt to lure back manufacturers from the United States. Finally the EIA has produced its annual energy outlook report and it continues to overstate the long-term importance of oil to the US economy.

The Independent Power Producer (IPP) Office has confirmed it will soon launch a bid window round for 513 MW of battery storage capacity and hopes to procure another 1 200 MW later this year. IPP Office head Bernard Magoro confirmed during a webinar hosted by Creamer Media and titled 'South Africa's Energy Outlook for 2023', that the country could see a total 1 700 MW of battery storage procured in 2023. He also assured that the IPP Office was preparing to release Bid Window 7 of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP), which followed on what was an oversubscribed Bid Window 6 at 9.6 GW with offers from 56 wind and solar bids. However, government ultimately selected only five solar plants with a combined capacity of 860 MW in the auction, and no wind projects, despite 4.1 GW of bids having been submitted and despite government originally planning to allocate up to 1 GW of solar and 3.2 GW of wind power in the auction. The IPP Office also plans on releasing a 3 000 MW gas-focused bid window and is working closely with Transnet to position the ports to be abke to deliver the gas to the country. During the webinar, Standard Bank renewable energy, power and infrastructure head Rentia van Tonder warned, however, that the REIPPPP needed a “rethink” as soon as possible and referred particularly to its format, refrencing Bid Window 6, and how procurement was undertaken. She referred to certain sites requiring different procurement processes to fully unlock the dormant potential in those areas.

Dr. Andrew Latham, Vice Present Global Exploration at Wood Mackenzie, joined us today to talk through recent happenings in the global upstream oil & gas exploration market. The punchline is there is more happening than you might think.Andrew has more than 25 years of experience in technical and commercial aspects of exploration including assisting majors and independent companies in strategy development and portfolio planning. In recent years, exploration has arguably been undervalued with a push for the energy transition and with an overall restraint on spending. Andrew's recent report catalyzed today's discussion by pointing out some really interesting things are happening in this classic art of "finding more." It was so fun to be talking about exploration again!A few themes we touch on include recent industry successes/results, how dynamics around gas discoveries might be changing in the current world, and how exploration success and subsequent development actually improves the ESG profile of those operators. Today's exploration activity also gives a window into what those participants think about long-term oil market fundamentals given the extended cycle time to positive project cash flow. Thank you to Andrew for joining!Mike Bradley kicked us off with discussion around what to watch outside of energy, given we are entering the heart of earnings season along with refining margin observations. He throws in a fun takeaway from a recent shareholder proposal to Citibank. Colin Fenton and Mike both hit different aspects of European natural gas market dynamics before Colin relays observations on various asset classes relative to commodity markets and how that is influencing a number of institutional investor discussions. He also alerted us all that BP has published their Energy Outlook for 2022.

There's lots of anxiety around the words and actions of a new administration. Matt and Justin share a few thoughts about energy and the practical reality that makes oil and gas essential for a healthy and thriving world.
Joe Biden is now officially president-elect after securing a win in natural gas-rich Pennsylvania despite the fight over fracking we've heard so much about these last long weeks. S&P Global Platts Analytics predicts a muted production impact if Biden bans new federal drilling permits, putting up to 1.1 million b/d of oil output and 3.7 Bcf/d of gas output at risk by 2025. On this special episode, we take a look at the implications ahead for energy and climate policy with Washington analyst Kevin Book, managing director of ClearView Energy Partners. We go through two key scenarios: what a Biden White House will try to accomplish if he has the cooperation of a Democratically controlled Senate and how he might have to narrow that down if Republicans hold onto power in the chamber. Book walks us through the many policies that Biden can tackle through executive action. And we ask him if he expects Biden to end new federal drilling permits, yank the Keystone XL heavy crude pipeline permit, cancel leasing in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and strike a quick interim Iran deal that brings sanctions relief.
