In the past few decades, technology has taken over the way we live our lives. From the books that we read to news we receive, the way we consume media has been changed forever. But recently, there’s been a movement to return to the analogue. Whether it’s vinyl records, DVDs, or even newspapers - the demand for physical media is growing. Creators and storytellers across the nation are meeting that growing need by making new and interesting physical content of their own. Christopher Payne is doing just that with his publication Fine Print. Christopher grew up in a small town in California named Cherry Valley near the Mojave Desert. While living there, he honed his skills as an artist, producing art that focuses on what he describes as, “nature viewed through a distorted lens”. After finding artistic success in exhibits, on magazine covers, and having artworks placed in movies and TV shows - and after living in LA and Austin - a new job search led Christopher to Baton Rouge four years ago. Now he leads his Fine Print team across the nation from here in the capital city. It goes without saying that the news has had one foot out the door of the physical medium for years now. This has caused magazines, newspapers and newsletters to have to make moves to stay alive. One of the main things you’ll see them doing is establishing a strong internet presence to make sure their readers can get their news anywhere and everywhere. Ivory Payne is no stranger to this evolution. Ivory is a graphic artist and the publisher of the Baton Rouge Weekly Press, a paper that started life 47 years ago and today has a significant internet presence - though Ivory still prints physical issues for those traditionalists who want it. Ivory says the paper has a circulation of around 60,000, which, per capita, makes it one of the most well-read local papers in the country. Ivory was born and raised here in Baton Rouge but spent much of his working career in Ohio. He came back home in 2016. Back here he wears many hats, including President of the Louisiana Black Publishers and Media Association, assistant pastor at the Greater New Birth Full Gospel Fellowship, and publisher of a bi-annual coffee table book about African American leaders who make a positive impact in their communities, called Leaders Publications. It’s clear to see that these two Paynes don’t just share the same name, they’re two sides of the same coin. On the heads side of the Payne coin, Ivory is keeping the public informed through one publication and highlighting innovators with another. On the tails side, Christopher is using his skills and talent to lift up others' work as well. Ivory and Christopher are both very passionate about what they do and that’s important: If it weren’t for organizations like theirs, physical mediums would surely phase out of existence. Vanessa Bassil is the founder and president of the Media Association for Peace, and has personally trained journalists and journalism students in Lebanon and other countries in the Middle East. She is currently in graduate school at the University of Bonn in Germany, working towards a PhD in Peace Journalism. Peace Journalism, the guiding practice behind Media Association for Peace, (MAP) is when editors and reporters make choices—of what to report, and how to report it—that create opportunities for society at large to consider and value non-violent responses to conflict. Growing up in an insulated Christian community in the wake of the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990), Vanessa never had the opportunity to meet a Lebanese Muslim. As a rookie journalist, instead of working inside of one of her country's ethnic media silos, she chose independence. She was drawn towards peacebuilding, and would report on camps that brought together groups of Sunni and Shia Muslims and Christians in the mountains. With the founding of MAP in 2013, Vanessa created a space where journalists learn to report on Lebanon's divisive issues – including an economic crisis, the difficulties of hosting Syrian refugees, and LGBTQ rights – in ways that are nuanced and depolarizing. Lisa Simpson, the former executive director of Arizona Newspapers Association, and Chris Kline, the former president/ CEO of Arizona Broadcasters Association, have known each other for years since they both lobby on issues that affect their association's members similarly. The major difference between the two is Lisa's members are from newspapers, and Chris' are broadcasters. But in a world where more and more media content is being shared and consumed on the same devices by the same audiences, to some, it seems archaic and a bit outdated to define a news media company primarily by its legacy platform of delivery (such as a press or transmitter). Moreover, most agree that a broadcaster and a legacy news company compete less with each other for ad dollars, where both lose the lion's share of local media revenue to big tech companies like Google and Meta/ Facebook. Add to that how corporate media empires have grouped more and more local outlets under common ownership, depleting association membership numbers. It seemed only logical to these two state media leaders that merging resources would be a logical way to strengthen the support provided to both association memberships. So on August 20, 2023, history was made when two separate media associations that for years considered themselves competitive for audience and ad dollars — Arizona Newspapers Association and Arizona Broadcasters Association — announced that their boards approved that they would become one on September 1, 2023. Arizona Media Association was created. Both Kline and Simpson will remain on board in leadership roles, with Kline taking the "top chair" of CEO and president. Kline was quoted in the initial announcement: "There is a significant amount of line-blurring between platforms. For most news consumers, all local outlets fall under the umbrella of local news, making the merger a logical next step for the industry organizations in Arizona." He added, "It gives us a lot of extra room to stand boldly," Kline said of the partnership, "with hundreds of companies across platforms.” In this episode of "E&P Reports," we explore the groundbreaking move by two organizations that considered themselves competitive for decades. Arizona Newspapers Association and Arizona Broadcasters Association merge into Arizona Media Association. We chat about the "whys and hows" of the union with Lisa Simpson, the former executive director of Arizona Newspapers Association, and Chris Kline, the former president/ CEO of Arizona Broadcasters Association. We also learn their future plans for advancing the industry and serving their combined membership.

Our kids are naturally curious explorers who can easily get caught up in their own world of make believe and play! It's wonderful to experience and it's vital to their growth and development. BUT we don't have to take on the role of full-time entertainer, and our kids don't need us to (it's also not a crime if our kids are bored!). My guest, Dr. Jody LeVos, explains all of this and talks about how play helps kids develop social emotional skills, cognitive abilities, solve problems, develop physically, and most importantly, make sense of and explore the world around them. The best part about play is that it's FUN! Life is heavy enough and having fun is good for all of us. In this episode, Dr. LeVos and I talk about different kinds of play, how it meets multiple needs for your kiddos, builds connection and creates moments that are remembered for a lifetime. China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi and a 20-strong delegation arrived in the Solomon Islands Thursday at the start of an eight-nation tour that comes amid growing concerns about Beijing's military and financial ambitions in the South Pacific region.China says the trip builds on a long history of friendly relations between Beijing and the island nations. But Australia scrambled to counter the move by sending its own Foreign Minister Penny Wong to Fiji to shore up support in the Pacific. Wong had been on the job just five days following an Australian election and had just arrived back Wednesday night from a meeting in Tokyo. In Fiji, Wong said it was up to each island nation to decide what partnerships they formed and what agreements they signed, but urged them to consider the benefits of sticking with Australia.“Australia will be a partner that doesn't come with strings attached nor imposing unsustainable financial burdens," Wong said. “We are a partner that won't erode Pacific priorities or Pacific institutions.”Meanwhile, the Media Association of Solomon Islands called on its members to boycott a news conference in the capital, Honiara, held by Wang and his counterpart from the Solomon Islands, Jeremiah Manele, following a meeting between the pair. That's because only selected media were invited to the event, and the schedule allowed for just a single question to be asked of Wang by China's state-owned broadcaster CCTV.“Its a tough call to make regarding the media boycott for the press event on Thursday,” wrote association president Georgina Kekea on Twitter. “Our protest is for our govt to see our disappointment. They have failed us & they failed to protect #democracy.”According to an official Chinese summary of the meeting, Wang told his counterpart that China would firmly support the Solomon Islands in its efforts to maintain national security and territorial integrity, while Manele described the visit as historic and a “milestone in the relations” between the two countries.China signed a security pact with the Solomon Islands last month in a move that sent shock waves around the world. That pact has raised fears that China could send troops to the island nation or even establish a military base there, not far from Australia. The Solomon Islands and China say there are no plans for a base.In another move by China, a draft document obtained by The Associated Press shows that Wang is hoping to strike a deal with 10 small Pacific nations during his visit. The sweeping agreement covers everything from security to fisheries and is seen by at least one Pacific leader as an attempt by Beijing to wrest control of the region.Wang is hoping the countries will endorse the pre-written agreement as part of a joint communique after a May 30 meeting in Fiji with the other foreign ministers.During his 10-day visit, Wang is also planning to make stops in Kiribati, Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and East Timor.Earlier, Australia's new Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he'd sent Wong to Fiji because Australia needed to “step up" its efforts in the Pacific.“We need to respond to this because this is China seeking to increase its influence in the region of the world where Australia has been the security partner of choice since the Second World War,” he told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. But Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said that in recent years, exchanges and cooperation between Beijing and the island nations had been expanding in a development that was welcomed by the Pacific countries.- By Nick Perry, AP
The Media Association of Solomon Islands plans to boycott an event for China's Foreign Minister, while concerns are raised over a leaked communique between China and Pacific nations.
The Media Association of Solomon Islands (MASI) has announced that its members will be boycotting a media event for China's visiting Foreign Minister on Thursday, after restrictions were placed on media access to the event.

The Media Association of Trinidad and Tobago is acting like that one co-worker that does the bare minimum, but somehow has the time to tell everyone else how to do their job. So, I tell MATT how they could better spend their time to add value to the lives of citizens! Lolol The letter from MATT regarding the virtual press conferences did not address any of the shortcomings on the part of reporters and media houses that the public has witnessed and complained about during coverage of this pandemic. Instead, in large part it can be characterized only as a shifting of blame. The letter leads me to believe that: 1. Editors are of the opinion that they are above reproach or should not be “corrected” 2. The MATT at best may be a little misguided in their role and at worst have given up their responsibility of being the independent fourth estate 3. There is some disconnect between public interest and MATT’s interest…
Show Notes: NSMA moved to Winston-Salem 2-years ago and Winston-Salem has an underrated sports vibe Growing up in Boston, Dave remembers reading the sports section at an early age and always loved the stories much more than the stats Has always loved how sports connects people together and the stories behind the games do just that After graduating from Syracuse University, he would eventually make his way to Providence, RI before finally getting an opportunity to be a sports anchor in 1988 at WXII in Winston-Salem Loved being a reporter much more than anchor because as a reporter you can create stories Hockey is his favorite sport and covering the Carolina Hurricanes after their Stanley Cup win is still one of his greatest thrills Loves teaching as a professor at Wake Forest University and bringing in guests to help develop the next generation of sportscasters and sports reporters Words of Wisdom from Dave Goren: "It's not who you know, it's who knows you." "As we see the traditional storytellers retire, it's about bringing up the next generation. We have a lot of young people, but I don't want to lose the baby boomer's knowledge. Some of these people have been doing this for 35 yers and they've made the mistakes we don't want to make ourselves."— Kevin Orthman I met Kevin Orthman just a few days before GoWild launched. I've made friends, found teammates, met thought leaders, and founded many businesses relationships. The Professional Outdoor Media Association is the best program we work with. I can’t wait for the convention this summer and highly recommend you check it out. If you like this show and are interested in POMA, remember, memberships are cheap. And as I point out in the show. Nobody is paying me to say this. In fact I pay POMA. It’s a lengthy discussion but it’s good. Stick around and let us know what you think. John Peterson grew up loving wrestling out in the western part of Minnesota. With two twin brothers who excelled, it was easy for him to follow their opponents from around the state. As Peterson got older, he took his love for the sport and his passion for broadcasting and put them together. On Episode 42 of The Guillotine Grapevine, we talk to the Fertlie, Minn., native about his broadcasting career and how some graduate work at St. Cloud State led him to be named the National Wrestling Media Association's Broadcaster of the Year for 2017-18. The Atlantic 10 Media Association reunion tour continues, as long-time listener, first-time caller Matt Vautour joins Brian to talk about the life of a college sports beat writer. Matt, who covers the University of Massachusetts for the Daily Hampshire Gazette, and Brian reminiscence about their days covering the A-10 in the late 1990s and early 2000s, with the requisite John Chaney stories (for every Phil Martelli, theres a Darelle Porter ). This leads to a larger discussion about how being a beat writer has changed over the past 20 years. Matt talks about how message boards were the original Twitter, what it was like to cover John Calipari as a student journalist, and how everything is a story these days. They also talk about how blogging has changed. Matt used to say that his blog was like the deleted scenes part of a DVD, which now is two dated technological references. But he and Brian talk about how publishing news online and social media has totally changed what we considered “blogging.” Matt also discusses why he'd like to write three minutes of a stand-up comedy routine. Matt also makes the best obscure West Wing reference you'll hear on the internet all day.

Russ Johns - Entrepreneur and Podcaster Russ Johns started out years ago as a professional drummer. In 1987, Russ took a fall while working on a billboard. He fell 36 feet and nearly lossed his right arm. When people shake his hand they are startled because the reconstructive surgery left him without much grip in his hand. He went through about two years of surgery. Because of this accident, he got into technology. Russ has been in the technology industry since the early 90's. He was relocated several times and landed in Houston. His position was eliminated and so he started working on the entrepreneurial side of things to help business owners. He was recruited to operate a couple radio stations where he started broadcasting local high school sporting games. This is what got him into podcasting. Share on Twitter Having helped a lot of people with their shows and delivering podcasts or "radio on demand" to radio stations in a tradition format. He continues to think outside the box. He likes to say that he rents his brain out to business owners when they have to think outside the box. Russ really enjoys talking to other in the industry that he can bounce ideas off of. Sometimes it takes a different lens to see a new perspective. - Russ Johns Russ Johns Understands the Shift in Technology and Media Media is changing. In the industrial age, there was a big requirement for building things and assembly lines for building things. Now that we are in the information age, we are more aligned with the "Story telling 2.0" through online communities. When you have something to share, it's based on abundance and not competition. People are more likely to share rather than hide their knowledge. It's not far-fetched to have a community of 1,000 people, get engaged and involved in your community so that everyone does well. If you like at the big picture of media creation, you are in control now. Future Media Association is based on words, images, video and audio. Russ and his colleagues rotate each one of these focuses each week to share what's going on with technology and these tools with business owners each week. Russ and his partner in crime, Maryanne LaSalle, hold live meetings every Tuesday. After the meeting, they record a video called Raw and Ready. They then repurpose the video in audio form and submit it to several different platform. They've generated interest to open up additional chapters in Wisconsin and Dallas/Ft. Worth so that others can share their knowledge with the group. Episode 86 is in the archives, and it was a really fun show. Joined by our guests talking about an art show this weekend downtown (When Visions Collide 2), a social media conference / retreat this weekend in Frankenmuth (the Social Media Association of Michigan's Social Media Retreat), IT recruiting here in the area (Brightwing), and all things Detroit (Daily Detroit) ...we had one hell of a range of topics and a whole lot of fun this time around...to the point where we even had to break into one of our infamous fifth segments... After our 1986-themed intro wrapped up, the mics went live and we were off and running. From tunnels that ran from the Playboy mansion to the homes of several celebrities to ISIS encroaching on the real-life Tatooine, all of the fun and excitement around Opening Day downtown, Bob's annoyance with the latest Android operating system update and more, as always, our first segment covered the news and events that have caught our eye. We also gave a quick recap of our event last week at Firebird Tavern, along with our upcoming event next week at Blackfinn in Royal Oak, so listen in for some details on those. For our second segment, we dove in with Leanne Rumsey, who's putting together When Visions Collide 2, an art show taking place downtown at the Tangent Art Gallery on Saturday night. There's going to be a wide range of artists covering everything from paintings to charcoals to stained glass and more there, and every piece that's there is going to be for sale. So whether you're looking for something for your home, your office, a cool gift, or just something cool to do on Saturday night, this definitely sounds like something you should be planning on checking out. The event has more than doubled in size since last year, so there's bound to be a little something for everyone and anyone...and odds are good we'll see you there if you go. For details and more information, check out their Facebook event listing over at https://www.facebook.com/events/877890205566523/ Next up, we chatted with Sola Obayan. We've known Sola for a number of years, from when she organized a social media panel on using social media to find a job back in 2012 that we took part in, and it was great to have her in to chat about the Social Media Association of Michigan. They've got a great event taking place this weekend (Friday through Sunday) in Frankenmuth that you social media types among our readers and listeners are going to want to be at. While they'll have tracks there for the beginners, the event is really geared towards people with some experience under their belts who are looking to deep-dive on case studies, best practices, and some heavier topics. With some great speakers covering a whole range of topics, if you're in this career track, then this is where you want to be this weekend...and good news, you can snag a 50% off discount for the next two days if you want to go. Listen in, and then hit their event page at http://www.eventbrite.com/e/social-media-conference-retreat-in-frankenmuth-michigan-tickets-14708201627 (and view that image there to see what you're looking for), or their website at http://www.smami.org/ for more information. Another 1986-soaked break later, and we were back with Russ Dotson from Brightwing for our fourth segment. As those of you who have been around for a while know, Russ was a guest on our very first episode, called in while he was deployed overseas, popped in while he was back stateside, was a crucial part in getting our Support the Troops events setup and running, and has been around the group for quite some time. We chatted about settling back in to civilian life now that he's back home for good and diving back into the all too fun world of information technology recruiting with Brightwing. They've got a wide range of positions available from engineering to more typical IT roles familiar to our group. Check them out,
