Send us a textIn this week's episode we're fortunate to be joined by Franka Philip for customary canaval wrap-up.Franka is a journalist and media consultant with 25 years experience in online, radio and print with specialist skills in digital media. We do a mini review of the fetes we attended during the season and we hear Franka's expert opinion on the elements that make for a great fete experience. We get into the beauty that is Panorama and discuss the results while Franka sheds some light on the comments around Beverly Ramsey Moore's Katzenjammers hattrick winning season. The competitions were a hot topic as well and seem to always be shrouded in controversy and this year was no different as The Ultimate Soca Champion kicked off the bacchanal and Calypso Monarch and Road March sparked a firestorm of opinions. We might finally have some answers on which competitions are still relevant and which ones may have outlasted their usefulness.Franka speaks to her experience with Lost Tribe and reminisces about her time with Minshall and we get into how J'ouvert has changed over the years. As is tradition, the canaval is over when we (and Kitchener) say it over.Enjoy!!!!

Rawlston Charles was born in Tobago and moved to Trinidad when he was 15. He migrated to the United States on December 12, 1967, with his copy of Kitchener's 1967 album. Initially, he got involved in the automobile business, repairing, buying and selling cars. He would take his calypso records with him whenever he went out to lime or party on weekends, also working as a DJ, only playing calypso, which was not as popular at the time compared to other genres. It was challenging to get calypso records at the time, costing more to import into the US. He established Charley's Calypso City in Brooklyn on July 4th, 1972, and, subsequently, Charley's Records where he began traveling back to Trinidad to establish connections with calypsonians and bandleaders and acquire music. Despite not having any prior experience in the music industry, Charles became an executive producer, producing some of the greatest calypsos and soca hits. He worked with Sparrow, Rose, Shorty, Explainer, Kitchener, Shadow, Maestro, Swallow, and Becket. The band Charlie's Roots, was named after Charley because he sponsored it, giving them $14,000 to purchase instruments and equipment, but he also nurtured several leading musicians and notable calypsonians, including David Rudder, one of the greatest calypsonians of the modern era. He created Calypso House, where he invited calypsonians to stay at no charge. In 1977, Charles earned himself the respect of the biggest players in the arena when he made a judgment call on a piece of music that at first left people saying he was a madman. The song entitled "Tempo" by Calypso Rose became the first Road March title ever won by a woman. It was historical and a massive hit, all thanks to Charles, who refused to compromise on his vision for the song. In 1984, Charles built and opened his recording studio, which was used by calypso and soca artists as well as major performers on the East Coast hip-hop industry, such as Dougie Fresh, Slick Rick, and RUN-DMC. The studio's gold records were once displayed in the studio's hallway, but most of them were stolen years ago, and only a couple of them were salvaged. In 2019, his daughter, Tina Charles, directed a movie called "Charley's Records," featuring prominent artists such as Mighty Sparrow, Calypso Rose, Doug E Fresh, Kurtis Blow, Prime Minister Keith Rowley, Machel Montano, and Super Blue. Despite piracy and other challenges in the music industry, Charles continues to be optimistic about the future. He believes that the younger generation's increasing interest in soca and calypso music is promising, and many young artists are exploring what was there before them. He hopes that calypso and soca music will continue to thrive and reach a wider audience. Charles's career, passion, and life are that of an American immigrant story of an unsung hero and pioneer who opened doors for many artists to waltz to fame and fortune. Rawlston Charles may have lost more money than they have made profits, but his legacy remains a crucial piece of Caribbean music history, with an exhibition in the National Museum of African History & Culture #otc #onthecallpodcast #podcaster #podcast #ozzie #host #service #shininglight #trinidadian #trinidadandtobago #trinidad #caribbean #caribbeanculture #culture #Triniculture #TriniDiaspora #Trinistories #community #Trinicommunity #sponsor #advocate #calypso @charleysrecords #steelpan #@pelhamgoddard #studio #blackradio @CalypsoRoseofficial #anthem #halloffame #god #children #olympics #documentary #grammys #frankiemcintosh#acolyte #church #faith #bell #marbles #elijah #nationalmuseum #national #museum #african #history

Welcome to The DSA Podcast by Di Soca Analyst (DSA). Our guest today is Adrian Dutchin, one of Guyana's top soca artists. Born the first of six, Adrian Dutchin first appeared on the scene in 1998 as part of the group "Seven." He was the lead singer of the group for four years before venturing into music on his own, and was signed to Kross Kolor records by Burchmore Simon. Adrian continued to work on his music and eventually came out on top in several competitions in Guyana - the Road March, twice, and once with Chris Wilson for the song "Buxton Spice." He also made a name for himself in the Soca Monarch competition, winning three titles to-date. After winning the Road March in 2006 Adrian became a member of "X2 (Times Two)". He recorded with Kross Kolor Records and he was subsequently drafted by renown Bajan band Krosfyah as one of their lead singers. Dutchin sees all this as his opportunity to work hard to "keep the flag flying." Adrian has graced the shores of several countries, including the USA, England, Canada, St. Lucia, Antigua, Barbados, Grenada, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Turks and Caicos, St. Maarten and St. Croix. He has performed with most of the big names in soca such as Rupee, Machel Montano, Alison Hinds, Edwin Yearwood, Peter Ram, Destra, Shurwayne Winchester and Iwer George. He has also worked with people such as Jumo Primo of Byron Lee's Dragonaires, Terry Gadraj and the Hit Man.

There's no carnival without bacchanal. Whether it's national bacchanal stories originating from rumours that take on a life of their own or bacchanal in your friend group. It's a part of our culture and of course calypsonians never fail to capture the spirit, energy and stories that reflect our collective and individual experiences. From the classic by Super Blue, "Bachannal Time" to the newer anthems like by Kerwin Dubois. This episode of TGiM the Tent is an exciting mix of traditional and contemporary calypsoes with songs from as early as the 1954 Road March to present day and everything bacchanalish in between.
I promised to explain this to my listeners outside of Trinidad. A "Road March" can be seen as anything we use often as though we have no other option. Locally the term carries way more meaning but we will leave it simple and applicable. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/king4265/message

We reach! In this episode we recap the 2020 season (I don’t know whose idea it was to try to do that on Ash Wednesday but clearly that did not work…so we’re doing it now!). We revisit the Road March and Soca Monarch competitions and of course we get into some serious conversation about what’s next for International Soca Monarch, how the competition could be improved and most importantly, how do we create meaning and value behind it. Alwyn “Daddy Jones” Baptiste is a master craftsman. To music lovers in the Virgin and Leeward islands, he is not only a legend but a pop culture fixture. The master keyboardist, arranger and beat maker has been in the business of creating Soca hits for decades. There are very few producers that can match his creativity r his record of hits! Daddy Jones has produced for aritsts and bands and several islands and his productions include artists from several islands.Growing up in St. Croix Daddy Jones was encouraged and inspired by his father, Alwyn Baptiste Sr. He remembers literally sitting at his father’s side observing his prowess, not only as a composer but as a musician. He marveled at his ability and the respect his dad had among fellow musicians. Through his teens Jones tried his hand at different sports. He was a high-level performer academically and at one point thought seriously about going to law school. As disciplined a person as he is, he more than likely would have succeeded. However, as he indicates, he had no choice. Music had a hold of him since childhood and it would not let go.At carnival time, Alwyn Baptiste puts on his cape and transforms into Daddy Jones, the musical superhero that has inspired legions of keyboardists and rhythm programmers across the Caribbean. He has produced for some of the Caribbean’s best including the late “Daddy Friday”. Daddy Jones has won coveted Road March titles in an unprecedented 6 countries. As much as he has accomplished, Daddy Jones is not yet done. He has his eyes set on taking his brand of Soca production into the rest of the world. He is determined to make the would bounce to a Daddy Jones Riddim. This is the story… thus far… of Alwyn “Daddy Jones” Baptiste.

Will Conch Shell capture the Road March title!? One panelist is leading the campaign - a convincing one at that! In this episode we break down Soca songs that captured the title and those that capture the spirit of the parade - two kinds in fact. We give out more awards and consider other existential questions:... what is a Carnival without an Iwer? Do we owe Kes a Road March? SOCA or Die! #SOCAorDie #SOAPBOX #fortheculture #TrinidadandTobago

Its Vincy Mas and this week we preview what to expect during the Soca Monarchs this weekend! We have most of the big hitters and potential King or Queen of Soca Monarch and Road March for 2016. I'm going to put my faith in Hypa 4000 taking Road march. For Ragga Soca Monarch i'm going with Hance, but dont be overshadowed by Wetty Beatz and Hypa 4000. For the Main event i'm expecting Fireman Hooper to take it but would be nice to have a new face taking the elusive crown for Vincy Mas! Notable mentions for this week's Pressure play comes from Hypa 4000 with his new single Turn It Over, as well with the new Congo Riddim out of Grenada!
