So much has happened in West Indies cricket that you could be forgiven for missing the big news that CWI and WIPA had signed a new Memorandum of Understanding. The agreement lasts until 2027 and heralds in a new partnership designed to solidify commitment to promoting gender pay equity within West Indies cricket. The MOU outlines plans to achieve parity in international and regional match fees, international captain's allowances, international team prize money and regional individual prize money for all West Indies cricketers by 1 October 2027. The MOU also aligns the performance grading criteria for international women's and regional men's contracts with the established standards for international men, ensuring a uniform evaluation process across domestic and international cricket from 1 October 2024. In the early 2000's, a concerned government official approached Dave Martins. Dave was an iconic musician from the Caribbean, who was the lead vocalist of the band Tradewinds. Someone who had his finger on the pulse of the Southern Caribbean islands. The government official asked him to write a song to quell the ethnic violence in Guyana. In another time, at the turn of the 20th century, Tamilians from Madurai and Dindigul were flocking the ports of Pondicherry, Karikal and Madras waiting to board ships for a better future. What could possibly connect the ethnic violence in Guyana to the ports of Tamil Nadu? This week, in the eight episodes of the series, The Great Migration, we trace the history, mythology and stories of indentured migrants. We discover what connects West Indies Cricket, Jackals, the Mariamman Temples of Tamil Nadu and the Sheetla Devi temples of North India, and what they teach us about the human race. In July 2020, international cricket returned after the Covid break. Memorably, the West Indies was the first team to visit England and we caught up with Sir Clive Lloyd after his team had beaten England in the 1st Test at Southampton. He talks about the inequality distribution of wealth currently in world cricket and illustrates just how expensive it is for the West Indies to host international tours. He examines the current team and outlines what they must do to emulate the great sides that he was part of in the 1970s and 80s. He also reveals a love of Bob Marley...
Episode 52 is here! The thing West Indies fans do best is cuss about everyone and everything and more often than not look for simple answers to complex questions. There is no doubt that West Indian red ball batsmanship has been on the decline in the region for the best part of 5 years. A test side that has shown middling consistency has had to slowly rebuild the batting blocks in order to compete. In that regard it was an absolute no brainer to get West Indies batting coach Monty Desai on the podcast to talk batting fundamentals. It may be safe to say that by the time Omari Banks was a teenager he was a veteran stage performer. Church and community concerts, official ceremonies, serenading ladies on stage during pageants, talent shows and every conceivable choir that requested his vocals. In the late 80s and early 90s Omari Banks was a hot ticket. By his pre-teen years, Omari showed signs of separating himself from the thing that up until that point he seemed destined for. A career in music. Many were shocked and disappointed when Omari stopped performing as much on his native island, Anguilla. Omari had discovered a passion for the game of cricket. He thrust himself into it with all his might. Years of late evenings practicing at Anguilla’s only cricket facility, many times alone, would eventually pay dividends. In 2003 Omari was named as a member of the West Indies Cricket team. The first athlete from Anguilla to have this honor bestowed upon him. He would go on to appear in 10 test matches, play for top Cricket Clubs in the U.K. and win several awards. At the ripe age of 29 Omari, the cricket professional surprised the world yet again. Omari put down the bat and ball and picked up the guitar. Yes, Omari Banks, the childhood singing sensation was drawn back to his first love. Music. The opening lyrics of his first single said: It’s in your moment of trial you decideIf you will win or roll over and dieWhere there is no vision my friends we shall dieSteadfast to your faith and soar to the sky … And that indeed is what Omari Banks has been doing ever since he returned to music. Holding fast and soaring to the sky. This is the story… thus far… of Omari Banks.

Then we dig into a look at the movie Fire in Babylon which looks at the West Indies Cricket during the 1970s and 80s. It documents their rise into being the best test match team in the world that went undefeated for 15 years and their struggle against colonialism and racism. We ask how if cricket can be an emancipating tool and how do we understand the this complex time. Further, we dig into what colonialism in sports looks like and how entrenched it remains. Finally, we try to come to grips with how we understand this truly transcendent team that contained some of the best players ever to play the game. Music: www.purple-planet.com
