In this episode of The Seoul Patch Podcast, the guys discuss the idea that it's never too late to reach out to those in the past that we used to be close with. When you live an expat lifestyle, it's easy to let friends from high school, college, your 20s, etc. slip from your fingers. Sometimes we grow apart, and sometimes we just put off writing that email. What Ryan discovered during his trip home is that the other party is often wanting to reach out to you, and it just takes one person taking the initiative in order to reestablish contact with that close friend from the past. Let us know if you have experienced this at podcast@theseoulpatch.com.If you like the outro music, check out Ryan's album here:https://thatsspanishfor.bandcamp.com/album/the-moo-moo-choo-chooYou can find The Seoul Patch Podcast listed on Feedspot's 25 Best South Korea Podcasts. In this episode of the podcast, Kevin, Ryan, and Jack discuss the tragic news regarding the teacher who is suspected of committing suicide in the classroom. Hey Seoul Patch listeners. I am here with Ryan today. We are one man down, Kevin was unable to make it for the recording. Ryan and I had a conversation about the distinction between the kind of Eat, Pray, Love visiting a country, traveling through and spending a year maybe trying to find yourself or something and the distinction between moving to another country and actually living there, paying bills, building deep relationships, starting families, all that sort of stuff. So it's an interesting conversation, I don't think it's one that I've ever heard before, at least not in juxtaposition with that kind of Eat, Pray, Love idea of traveling and the romantic side of it. So if you're into travel or Korea, I think you'll really enjoy this conversation. You can find The Seoul Patch Podcast listed on Feedspot's 25 Best South Korea Podcasts. This week, the guys talk about the fire at the server farm that put Kakao Talk out of commission for a few days. The guys talk about how that disruption affected them and how much they actually do depend on one app during their everyday lives. The guys also briefly discuss Korea's bid to host of the 2036 Olympics. The guys will be well ensconced in their 50s and in Jack's case almost 60s by the time that comes to fruition. Overall, it was a pretty slow news week in Korea, however, the boys tried their best to keep things poppin. Heeding advice from the old adage 'quality, not quantity', The Seoul Patch will be releasing episodes biweekly (or bimonthly, I'm never sure what these actually mean.) We'll be bringing you the latest stories from the news and our lives on the Korean peninsula twice a month from now on. Catch you on the next Seoul Patch! In this week's episode of The Seoul Patch Podcast, Jack and Kevin sit down with big time YouTube teacher Robin Shaw of YouTube's very own Shaw English. Robin was generous enough to sit down with the guys and tell his story. He talked about how he began his life in Korea as a teacher. Then, he went on to talk about his time as a recruiter, a university professor, and ultimately a YouTube personality. With more than 1.7 million subs, he has one of the largest English language YouTube channels in the world. Of course in typical Jack fashion, he booked Robin on the show and then almost forgot to ask him about his YouTube channel until the interview was over. Talk about burying the lead! As expected, Robin handled the situation gracefully, and ultimately, the guys were left with a really interesting interview that anyone interested in English education will enjoy. You can find The Seoul Patch Podcast listed on Feedspot's 25 Best South Korea Podcasts. In this episode of the Patch, Kev, Ryan, and Jack talk about what it's like to be back in the classroom now that Covid is winding down. After two years of teaching online, those classroom teaching muscles seemed to have atrophied for the guys. And like modern day Rip Van Winkles, the guys have had to wake those muscles up. In this week's Patch, we talk to Maria, a hagwon owner and entrepreneur here in South Korea. Maria responded to one of our Facebook posts inviting hagwon owners to come on the show and share different perspectives of the English language academy AKA the English hagwon. Maria was kind enough to give us an hour of her time, and her story didn't disappoint!Maria had a fascinating childhood by most people's standards. She was born in South Korea, but emigrated to Brazil with her family when she was a child. As a multicultural individual, she often explains her cultural experience like this: "I was born in Korea, but made in Brazil."During the interview, Maria shared stories about growing up in Brazil, attending an English language international school in Brazil, and then returning to Korea as an adult to teach and eventually run her own school. As adherents to the communicative language learning method, Maria's teaching philosophy is especially interesting to us. She provided an interesting perspective on not only the administrative side of running a hagwon but the underlying communicative educational approach she employs at her school as well. Thanks again for coming on the show and sharing your story, Maria! You can find The Seoul Patch Podcast listed on Feedspot's 25 Best South Korea Podcasts. In this episode of the pod, Kev and Jack interview Teacher Chaunna. Chaunna's journey to Korea is remarkable in its own right. But while here, she has had two very positive hagwon experiences. And that's not to say they have all been rainbows and teddy bears for her. But hearing how she was able to navigate certain challenges while maintaining good relationships with her directors is a testament to her ability to see the big picture as well as her professional savvy. In addition to being an English instructor at a university in Seoul, Sean is also very passionate about sustainable agriculture and urban farming. The guys thought it would be a great idea to sit down and pick Sean's brain for an hour about growing vegetables on your rooftop, balcony, or veranda. (The guys never actually establish the difference between a balcony and a veranda on the podcast. Oh well.) Did I mention Sean also makes his own peanut butter and granola? It's true! Hop in the DeLorean, fire up the flux capacitor, and set that timer to the 90s because we're sitting down with Chuck Hohenstein, a 90s OG. Chuck came to Korea in the 90s and shares stories about what is was like teaching back then. In this week's very special episode, the guys are joined by the K-Pop Sunbaes of The K-Pop Sundae Podcast. Whereas Jack, Kevin, and Ryan know little to none about K-Pop in general, the Sunbaes know a heck of a lot! And they were gracious enough to give the guys a crash course. We did a deep dive into first gen K-Pop, learning about H.O.T. and Seo Taiji and Boys. We also asked the three Sunbaes how they got into K-Pop in the first place. If you're K-Pop curious or just want to dip your toes into the shallow end of the K-Pop swimming pool, this is the perfect podcast for you. It's a great chat packed with loads of interesting facts, and a few laughs too! Kevin's Correction: Seoul Stache: Why is everyone sitting on the floor? I (incorrectly) came to the conclusion during the episode that ‘ondol' (온돌) meant ‘hot stone' heating. I was correct with ‘on' (온/溫) meaning ‘hot', but I forgot that ‘dol' (돌), while meaning ‘stone', is native Korean, while the ‘stone', 'on'(온/突) is Hanja meaning either ‘sudden' or ‘protruding', likely depending on context (and I'm far from a Hanja expert so really don't know). Either way, I was incorrect in my initial assumption.Intro/Outro Music: Eaters, song Tuck's Love Party (eatersmusic2000) https://freemusicarchive.org/music/eaters/an-evening-with-tuck-pendleton/tucks-love-partyhttps://freemusicarchive.org/music/eaters/wives/i-an-not-edibleEmail: podcast@theseoulpatch.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/theseoulpatchpodcast/Twitter: https://twitter.com/patch_seoulFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theseoulpatchWebsite: http://theseoulpatch.com
