Happy New Year! As 2025 comes to a close, the team looks back on the stories from the True Sunlight Podcast that defined the year, and the systems that made them possible. In this special year-end episode, Mandy provides an update on Cory Fleming's ‘Early Release' and LUNASHARK's digital librarian Kate Thomas takes listeners on a journey through twelve audio clips, one from each month, highlighting the investigations, interviews, and turning points that shaped LUNASHARK's work in 2025. From Pastor JP Miller's lawsuit warfare and eventual federal indictment, to the corruption exposed in Scott Spivey's killing, to Karl Stoller's silencing in the Bowen Turner case—this episode traces the patterns of corruption, the protection of powerful men, and the systemic failures that continue to plague America's justice systems. But we also celebrate the wins: Lee Gilley's indictment in Texas, the charging of former Deputy Billy Squires, the federal cyberstalking charges brought against JP Miller, and federal Child Sexual Abuse Material charges for former SC state rep RJ May and former long-time magistrate judge James Gosnell. Gosnell has pleaded not guilty. This isn't just a recap—it's a reminder of why sunlight matters, why this work must continue, and why your support makes accountability possible. As we look toward 2026, one truth remains clear: the work is far from over, but together, we're making a difference…. And That Is A Big Deal!

In this episode, we provide a comprehensive 2026 financial reset for military families, covering everything from emergency funds and debt payoff to maxing tax-advantaged accounts and avoiding lifestyle creep. Perfect for anyone wanting to turn the new year into a fresh financial start. Main Discussion Points Know Where You Are Before You Start Track your spending using apps like Monarch Money, YNAB, Rocket Money, or simple spreadsheet Face your financial reality- write down all debt and net worth even if it's negative Government shutdown proved why emergency funds matter: 3-6 months of expenses minimum Example: $500 car repair covered by emergency fund eliminated stress entirely Unique Military Financial Advantages Tax-free income: BAH, BAS, COLA not subject to federal income tax or payroll taxes (7%+ savings) State tax residency: Change to tax-free state (Texas, Florida, etc.) when stationed there! Spouse can too under Military Spouse Residency Relief Act TSP match: 5% automatic match after 2 years for BRS members. Don't leave free money on table Healthcare and housing covered through Tricare and BAH/base housing Example: Saving $300/month by changing state residency adds up to thousands annually 2026 Numbers to Know TSP contribution limit: $24,500 (up from previous year) TSP annual additions limit: $72,000 (includes match and combat zone contributions) Roth IRA limit: $7,000 per person ($14,000 for married couples, even if spouse doesn't work) Military pay raise: 3.8% coming. Let it compound for 20 years Path to Military Millionaire Status E7 example: $500/month starting as E3, by age 45 = $1 million at 7% return Real example from Reddit: E7 with 14 years, $600,000 saved, contributing $20-25k/year In 10 years that E7 will have $1.2 million just from money already contributed (before new contributions) Add military pension: $30k/year plus $40k from 4% rule = $70k annual income in retirement Time is your biggest asset. US stock market doubles roughly every 7-10 years Common Mistakes to Avoid in 2026 Not contributing to TSP at all (minimum 5%, goal 15%+) TSP loans for non-emergencies...change behavior instead New car trap: 7-year car loans becoming standard, shooting yourself in financial foot Lifestyle creep: Give half of pay raise to savings, half to lifestyle improvements Waiting for "perfect time." SHOW NOTES: Welcome to the final episode of The Money Pit, where we celebrate more than 21 years of helping you turn your house into a home you love. In this bittersweet finale, Leslie Segrete and Jim Kenzie reflect on our many years of offering floorboards-to-shingles advice while honoring the legacy of our late friend and long-time co-host, Tom Kraeutler. Thank you for more than two decades of The Money Pit. And remember: you can do it yourself, but you don't have to do it alone. - Preventive Maintenance: We emphasize that consistent home maintenance is the most vital habit for any homeowner, because small tasks like cleaning gutters or changing filters prevent the most expensive disasters. Remember, a home is a living thing that requires constant care and attention to truly reward its inhabitants. - Common Homeowner Mistakes: We do a review of the most common homeowner pitfalls we've seen on The Money Pit, such as the temptation to hire the cheapest contractor, which often leads to poor quality and higher costs in the long run. We also hear from listeners about water and moisture issues; make sure you address those, because they will never resolve themselves and only grow more destructive over time. - Home Improvement Projects That Pay Off: We detail home improvement investments that pay off every time, such as prioritizing energy efficiency through insulation and smart thermostats to increase comfort and reduce bills. Additionally, we recommend focusing on lighting upgrades and safety essentials like smoke alarms and secure railings to ensure a home is a place where families can thrive. Q & A: - George in Arkansas dealt with a chilly bedroom despite a 72-degree thermostat setting. We advise him to add 15 to 20 inches of insulation in his attic and use the back of his hand to find and seal drafts around window jams and outlets. - Cliff in Nebraska wanted to know how to make new wood picture frames look like weathered barnwood. We suggest burning the wood with a propane torch and using a wire brush to remove the soft char, creating a "driftwoody" texture before staining. - Lori in New Jersey asked how to treat a garage floor coated in thick oil and grease. The answer is to pressure wash the floor with a TSP solution and then apply a durable, two-part epoxy floor finish. - Lisa in Texas inquired about the safety of older two-prong outlets in her 1960s home. We explain that while they can be safe with adapters, it is much better to hire an electrician to upgrade the wiring to a modern, grounded system. ASK A QUESTION: Need help with your own home improvement or décor question? We'd love to help! Have you ever wondered what a Social Security bridge strategy is? In this episode, Floyd Shilanski, CFPⓇ breaks down how these strategies can help retirees wait to claim Social Security and boost their lifetime income. Rather than filing for Social Security at 62, some retirees use their TSP, 401(k), or other savings to cover income needs until they reach full retirement age or even 70. Floyd discusses why living longer matters, how waiting can increase your monthly income, and why each person needs a plan that fits their situation. Most importantly, this episode focuses on planning, coordination, and making choices that fit you, instead of following advice from friends, neighbors, or social media. If you're getting close to retirement and unsure about when to claim Social Security, this episode will help you see your options and the pros and cons of each.
Big changes are coming to your TSP catch-up contributions in 2026 and if you miss them, you could accidentally throw off your entire tax strategy.

Learn how to prepare your money for 2026 and invest retirement savings you hope to leave to your family. How do Americans feel about their money heading into 2026? How should you invest retirement accounts you don't plan to spend so your family can benefit later? The Nerds discuss how to invest a seven‑figure nest egg in workplace retirement plans to help you understand how to balance risk, taxes and legacy goals. But first, senior news writer Anna Helhoski joins hosts Sean Pyles and Elizabeth Ayoola to discuss NerdWallet's 2026 consumer outlook survey, including how confident people feel about their financial security, which potential money setbacks are weighing on them, and what big financial moves and risks they're planning to take in the new year. Then, credit writer Amanda Barroso and investing writer Taryn Phaneuf join Elizabeth to discuss how a retired military listener and their soon‑to‑be-retired spouse might invest $1.2 million they've saved in a TSP and 403b and hope to leave to their children and grandchildren. They review how TSPs and 403bs work and when it might make sense to roll them into IRAs, how to think about asset allocation when you have a long time horizon but may still face surprise retirement costs like long‑term care, and the rules around required minimum distributions and the 10‑year payout window for inherited retirement accounts. They also explore high‑level estate planning choices such as using trusts and keeping beneficiaries up to date, pros and cons of Roth conversions for heirs (including the Roth IRA five‑year rule), and how to balance leaving a legacy with using some money to create meaningful experiences with family during your lifetime. In this episode, Don and Tom saddle up for a tour through Schwab's “Good, Bad, and Ugly.” They applaud CEO Rick Wurster's warning about the growing overlap between gambling and investing, take a hard look at Schwab's retail-side conflicts and non-fiduciary sales practices, and then recoil at the truly ugly: Schwab's acquisition of Forge Global and its push to open private-company speculation to everyday investors. From there, they field listener questions about crypto's pointless search for a purpose, how to implement a disciplined 5 percent retirement withdrawal strategy, the ins and outs of tax-free Vanguard mutual-fund-to-ETF conversions, and whether a younger spouse should convert a large TSP balance to Roth. It's classic Talking Real Money: skeptical, practical, consumer-first, and mildly exhausted by the Wild West of modern finance. 0:04 Investing as the Wild West and why caveat emptor still defines the industry 0:24 Schwab's role as custodian vs. broker and how they reshaped trading costs 1:14 Schwab's discount-broker origins and institutional dominance 2:37 Free trades, market influence, and why Schwab became the industry's leader 3:52 CEO Rick Wurster's warning about gambling creeping into investing 4:43 Sports betting numbers, prop bets, and why only 5 percent come out ahead 5:54 The “bad”: Schwab retail selling and the fiduciary confusion 6:40 The “ugly”: Schwab buying Forge Global and pushing private-company speculation 7:23 Why private equity is riskier, pricier, illiquid, and over-hyped 8:17 The myth of private companies outperforming public ones 9:22 Why the Wild West persists: weak oversight, self-dealing, and revolving doors 10:48 Listener question: stablecoins, crypto legitimation, and the greater-fool problem 13:00 Currency concerns and why crypto still solves nothing 13:50 5 percent withdrawal strategy: when and how to draw from your portfolio 15:28 Rebalancing, total return withdrawals, and annual cash-flow discipline 16:47 Why withdrawals should follow rebalancing, not lead it 17:56 Vanguard mutual-fund-to-ETF conversions: how they work and why they're useful 20:10 Expense-ratio savings vs. capital-gains distributions 20:55 TSP-to-Roth conversion question: tax-rate timing matters 22:44 Only convert if you can pay taxes from outside savings 23:08 Reminder: free adviser meetings, no sales pressure 24:10 TRM's longevity and approaching episode 2,000 Learn more about your ad choices. If you’re a federal employee or member of the armed forces, your thrift savings plan (TSP) can be a powerful retirement tool, yet small missteps can lead to missed matching dollars, unnecessary risk, or reduced future income. In this episode of Protect Your Assets, David Hollander breaks down the most common TSP mistakes he sees today, including under-contributing, relying too heavily on the G fund or lifecycle funds, and overlooking how inflation affects conservative allocations. David also explains the key differences between your TSP withdrawal options, when a rollover may offer more flexibility, and why an incorrect TSP-3 beneficiary form is one of the most damaging errors federal employees make. With timely year-end reminders and practical guidance, this episode helps you make more informed decisions about your TSP and protect what you’ve worked hard to build.
