In April 1997, 22 year old university student Cho Jung-pil went to a fast food restaurant with his partner. While his girlfriend was ordering, Cho left to use the bathroom, but moments later would be found collapsed and covered in blood on the toilet floor. This would spark chaos as police rushed down to the scene, starting what would be a messy, complicated, near 20 year long case. Tune in to find out more. In this episode of The Korea Pro Podcast, Jeongmin is joined by Joon Ha, Korea Pro's correspondent, to discuss South Korea's potential shift in Ukraine policy and developments in defense capabilities. They begin by examining South Korea's increasingly clear signals about potentially providing weapons to Ukraine, triggered by an apparent deployment of North Korean troops to Russia. They discuss how this development may have crossed Seoul's previously stated "red line" and the government's new framework for military aid, shifting from "lethal vs. non-lethal" to "offensive vs. defensive" weapons categorization. The conversation then turns to South Korea's plans to deploy domestically produced drones by year's end, complementing the recently announced procurement from Poland. They also discuss the Polish president's scheduled visit to South Korean defense manufacturers and ongoing negotiations for a second round of K2 tank exports. Looking ahead, Jeongmin and Joon Ha preview the second anniversary of the Itaewon disaster and potential political tensions surrounding memorial attendance, as well as South Korea's decision to increase electricity fee for large industrial users while freezing household rates. About the podcast: The Korea Pro Podcast is a weekly 15-minute conversation hosted by Editorial Director Jeongmin Kim (@jeongminnkim) and Editor John Lee (@koreanforeigner), diving deep into the most pressing stories shaping South Korea — and dissecting the most complicated ones for professionals monitoring ROK politics, diplomacy, culture, society and technology. In the latest episode of the Korea Pro Podcast, Jeongmin, Lina and Joon Ha discuss the much-anticipated first formal meeting between opposition leader Lee Jae-myung and President Yoon Suk-yeol since Yoon's inauguration. The episode highlights how Lee's surprise speech to the press allowed the opposition to dominate the optics. However, the outcome remained ambiguous, with both sides presenting differing narratives of the discussion and leaving several high-profile issues unresolved. The episode also delves into upcoming political events, including Choo Mi-ae, the frontrunner for speaker of the National Assembly, nominations for the next ruling and opposition floor leaders, a plenary session to pass the revised Itaewon probe bill, a contentious bill for a special investigation into the death of a marine last year, and updates on the doctors' strikes. Lastly, the Korea Pro team discusses socio-economic issues, such as the controversy over universal cash vouchers and the financial pressures faced by small and medium-sized business owners. They also explore the recent rise of unmanned shops and the associated social challenges. In this week's episode, the Korea Pro team delves into the political dynamics behind Lee Jun-seok's pledge to mandate female military conscription for those seeking public civil service careers. This proposal, highly unfeasible and politically motivated, aims primarily at eroding Lee Jun-seok's former party's support base by wooing young male voters. The discussion then turns to President Yoon Suk-yeol's decision to veto a bill passed by the opposition party for a “special investigation” into the 2022 Itaewon crowd crush disaster. Described by the administration as potentially “unconstitutional,” the bill sought to create a committee with extensive powers. The president's critics pointed to the lack of accountability among high-level officials for the disaster. The episode also addresses U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan's comments on U.S. relations with South Korea and Japan, which he described as a “vision for the world,” which the Korea Pro team describes as fragile. This week's episode features the following members of the Korea Pro team: Editorial Director Jeongmin Kim (@jeongminnkim) Editor John Lee (@koreanforeigner) About the podcast: The KOREA PRO Podcast is a weekly 15-minute conversation hosted by Jeongmin Kim and John Lee, diving deep into the most pressing stories shaping South Korea — and dissecting the most complicated ones for professionals monitoring South Korean politics, diplomacy, culture, society and technology.

Today we're interviewing Helen Gi, Founder of HAE Creative, a mission-driven consultant agency that helps a ton of plant-based brands understand South Korea. HAE stands for Human Health Animal Liberation and Environmental Sustainability We do this in a district in Korea called Itaewon! Itaewon is crazy, it's this unique, sloping melting pot of so many different cultures and vanity. My friend and I found a bar crawl there and we were surprised how many foreigners showed up. Helen is such a helpful and giving person who has great insights on the Korean vegan community and has worked in a variety of industries throughout her life. She is eloquent and so community driven and has a lot of heart in what she does and it shows in the interview. Since Helen collaborates with other food tech players globally, You'll also get a better understanding on how the Korean market works. It's a great testbed for innovation. You'll also get a good feel on the values and views of entrepreneurship in Korea. I find this topic fascinating as you realize that culture is a big part of being an entrepreneur. In America, we are really gung ho about entrepreneurship. We also have a lot of data, research, talent and drive in America compared to most countries. What I've found most inspiring about South Korea's food tech community is that it's carried by some fantastic individuals who really care about the future they create. Perhaps one can say that all great things start with someone who will stop at nothing to make a difference in the world.

Rotten Mango Visual: https://www.youtube.com/@rottenmangopod On October 30th, a man walked out of his tiny little shop in Itaewon. He placed a pink blanket in the grim alleyway. He got on his knees in front of a tray of food he had prepared. Police immediately swarmed him, demanding he leave right away. Nobody was supposed to be in the alley, not after what had happened there. The man yelled at the police - “don't you dare touch the food. Don't touch it. Please you have to let me do this. The kids need to eat one last meal.” 159 young souls had tragically died in that little alleyway. The man had desperately tried to save them. Hello from the picket lines! This week, Jay and Tammy report on labor actions on the streets of Berkeley and Seoul. [4:30] First, Jay tells us what he's heard from striking student workers at the University of California. More than forty-five thousand UAW union members are drawing attention to their financial precarity and austerity in academia. We parse the possible fault lines among this remarkably large group of workers: the relative resources and prestige of different UC campuses, disciplinary biases, and disparate access to jobs after graduation. Why should we believe universities' pleas of poverty, when their money so clearly goes to bloated administrative positions, campus police, and extravagant sports facilities? [38:58] We also discuss strikes at Starbucks, The New School, and HarperCollins, and the revived possibility of a rail strike next month. Something's clearly in the air—will US labor law and the NLRB limit or bolster worker power? [45:27] Next, Tammy fills us in on the annual labor rally in Seoul, which, this year, targeted President Yoon Suk Yeol's malfeasance and the mass deaths in Itaewon. As the new administration promises to concentrate wealth even further and avoids interacting with the public, how should the Korean working class respond? What kind of government is the Yoon administration, and what is the government for, anyway? [53:02] Lastly, we remember Staughton Lynd, a key leftist intellectual and organizer who passed away last week. Lynd and his wife, Alice, were key figures in movements for civil rights and labor and against incarceration and war. RIP. Next week, we'll be taking a break from recording. Our next episode will be a live recording with Hua Hsu, so be sure to pick up his book—and please join us in person next week, if you're in NYC! This is a public episode. Albania's Prime Minister this week has accused the UK of scapegoating his country's citizens to excuse its ‘failed policies' on migration. This comes amid a deepening crisis over the UK's handling of asylum seekers. Sara Monetta spoke to people in the suburbs of Tirana about why many of Albania's young people are choosing to leave. Last weekend, young people gathered in the district of Itaewon, in the South Korean capital Seoul, to celebrate Halloween in far greater numbers than usual. The subsequent crush killed more than 150 people. Laila Shahrokhshahi experienced first-hand the force of the crowds before tragedy struck. Voters in Israel chose to return Benjamin Netanyahu to power in this week's election. The big story of his dramatic comeback has been about the rise of Israel's far-right, which he helped cultivate as a parliamentary alliance to boost the numbers for his right-wing bloc in the Knesset. Tom Bateman looks at the emergence of a new kingmaker, Itamar Ben-Gvir. Ahead of the midterm elections, the abortion debate still polarises the US, following the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe vs Wade. During those proceedings, there was also talk of Safe Haven laws, which exist in every state, and allow mothers to leave their new-borns at a designated safe site if they feel they are unable to take care of them. In Arizona, Linda Pressly met a family with direct experience of this. Ukraine's President has accused the Kremlin of 'energy terrorism', saying millions of people have been left without power because of Russian attacks on the country's power grid. Hugo Bachega has been living in the city for the past few months, and describes how Kyiv's citizens have once again adapted to rapidly changing circumstances. Presenter: Kate Adie Producers: Serena Tarling and Ellie House Editor: Richard Fenton-Smith Production Coordinator: Iona Hammond
Hello from Jay's trick-or-treating route! This week, Jay listened to hours of affirmative-action arguments from the Supreme Court so that you (and we) didn't have to. He recounts Ketanji Brown Jackson's sharp line of questioning and lays out the progressives' Catch-22. Does a third path reveal itself if we deny Harvard and its peers their institutional, “meritocratic” power? Is it true that Asian Americans are actually given a leg up in some academic environments? Next, we hear from Tammy, in Korea, following the horrific crowd crush that killed more than 150 people in Seoul's Itaewon neighborhood over Halloween weekend. We discuss the role of government negligence and the rage and grief reminiscent of the Sewol ferry disaster. Tammy explains what makes Itaewon such a special neighborhood, especially for young people and minorities in Seoul. What will it represent going forward? Finally, we honor the great people's historian Mike Davis, who died on October 25. We revisit his classic, “Fortress L.A.,” which appears as Chapter 4 in City of Quartz (currently available as a free Ebook from Verso or, if you prefer to listen, as an audiobook through your local library on Libby.) We also discuss his more recent pieces on foreign policy and organizing, and the huge gap that he and the late Barbara Ehrenreich leave behind. We'll continue to learn from Mike and follow his advice to take to the streets. If you missed our early episode with Mike, you can listen here or read the transcript.Join us on December 1, in NYC, for our TTSG + Hua Hsu live recording at NYU! Hey everyone. I'm changing up some things on the podcast this week, so I just wanted to pop on and let you know that I didn't feel comfortable releasing this week's originally scheduled episode because the focus was on how to fully embrace and live more presently with the somatic experience of joy. Much of what I was planning to discuss in that episode revolves around how the city of Seoul and the people I've met here elicit this newfound joy that I have been experiencing lately, but given the tragedy that took place in Itaewon last weekend, and the fact that the friends and families of those whose lives were lost as well as the entire country are in a national period of mourning, which for those families will last a lifetime, and considering many of my friends here from the SeoulShare, Soul Walkers, and CIK meetup groups, and me for that matter, were in Itaewon that night and some of us were only a block away from where this tragedy took place without even realizing that anything was wrong, I don't think this is the right time to share that episode. I'm sure I'll share it at some point down the road, but now is not that time. Now is a time for healing; my friend and organizer of SeoulShare and past guest Iggy Lee have been organizing events for people in the groups to come together who may be feeling isolated or alone in these trying times, and he shared a saying that goes, “Joy is doubled when shared; sorrow is halved when shared.” Originally this episode was supposed to be about how we can experience more joy in our lives by sharing more meaningful moments with our friends, but right now, we're going to take some time to heal in the company of our friends.I just want to take a minute to express my deepest sympathies to the families and friends who lost loved ones last weekend in Itaewon. There's nothing more I can say that will lessen your pain, but I hope you are surrounded by people you love and who will support you through this unimaginably difficult time. So, that's it for this week. Thank you for tuning in. Please take the next week to tell the people who add value to your life how much you love and appreciate them. —All of our episodes are available at www.mindfulmidlifecrisis.comIf this episode resonates with you, please share it with your family and friends.Sign up for our newsletter! Distraught relatives in the South Korean capital Seoul have been visiting hospitals and a missing persons centre in search of people who may have been injured or killed in a crush on Saturday. At least 153 people died in the disaster in an alleyway in the Itaewon district. We speak to someone who was there. Also in the programme: we hear from one of the first medics on the scene of Saturday's car bomb attacks in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, which killed more than 100 people; and why British cathedrals are being bathed in sound and light.
