New York Times bestselling author Eric Ries applies his startup philosophy to churches. Carey and Eric cover how to know when to take a risk, how to get past broke thinking in your church, and why the harder path is often easier.
When you think about risk, you probably think about big, dramatic moves: quitting your job, moving across the country, saying something controversial. But the people who are actually good at taking risks are the ones who practice small challenges every day. Julie Zhuo was one of the earliest product and design leaders at Facebook, and is now the co-founder of Sundial, a company that uses AI to help organizations make better decisions. In this episode, Molly and Julie dissect what it actually means to take a risk and how you can build your risk-taking skills through daily practice. Julie reflects on her own risk-taking journey, the ways she has honed her abilities to challenge fear, her thinking on when you shouldn't take a leap, and the important distinction between courage and fearlessness.WorkLife is a podcast from TED where host and company builder Molly Graham and her expert guests talk through the messy feelings we all experience at work. What if the key to standing out in a noisy world isn't about shouting louder or spending more money? What if it's about embracing the crazy? In this episode of Insight Out, I sit down with Mark Schaefer, one of the sharpest marketing minds on the planet, to uncover the secrets of audacious marketing in an AI-dominated world. Mark, a New York Times bestselling author and marketing strategist, reveals how businesses can outshine the competition by tapping into the most uniquely human qualities crazy ideas, awe-inspiring experiences, and stories that people can't help but share. But here's the twist: What if the future of marketing isn't about algorithms, but about out-humaning AI? What if the most powerful tool in your arsenal is your ability to create something so bold, so unexpected, that it stops people in their tracks? Mark shares jaw-dropping stories from his new book, Audacious, including how a drone show in the Texas sky left an entire restaurant in awe, and how a brand called Liquid Death turned the water industry on its head by embracing the taboo. What's your audacious idea? What bold, crazy, unforgettable story will you create to stand out in a world drowning in noise? Tune in to this episode to find out how you can start today. In this episode, you will learn the following: How to create marketing moments that stop people in their tracks. Why awe is the secret ingredient to unforgettable branding. How to disrupt traditional narratives and break taboos like Liquid Death. The five-act storytelling structure that makes ads stick. It's predictable, it's ignorable. But standing out isn't about spending more money or shouting louder—it's about doing something truly different.” – Billy [02:55] “Instead of playing it safe, instead of doing what you think you're supposed to do, we're going to talk about how you actually stand out.” – Billy [10:49] “AI can be competent, but it can't create human connection. If you're just competent, you're vulnerable—because competent is ignorable.” – Mark Schaefer [37:09] “Word of mouth marketing is the most powerful form of marketing, yet most brands don't have a system for it. It's time to change that.” – Mark Schaefer [44:37] “The best marketing isn't just seen—it's experienced. When you inquire, there's going to be a response, because Kṛṣṇa is fully responsive. So it's quite natural when one evolves. It's not Darwinian evolution that matter evolves, but we, the soul, evolve through different species by the law of karma. When we come to the human form of life, there's a natural sense of inquiry. And when one exercises that inquiry, then Kṛṣṇa, who's the Antaryāmī within everyone's heart, He says in the Gītā: "Teṣāṁ satata-yuktānāṁ bhajatāṁ prīti-pūrvakam dadāmi buddhi-yogaṁ tam yena mām upayānti te," that if you are sincere and you inquire, then I'll guide you from within the heart. So because Brahmā was deeply self-searching, even though he was born into ignorance, he did have that impetus to ask. And Kṛṣṇa fulfilled his desire: "uvāca puratas tasmai tasya divyā sarasvatī" (Bs. 5.24). Divyā Sarasvatī appeared before him as a representative and gave him a mantra: "tapas tvaṁ tapa etena tava siddhir bhaviṣyati" (Bs. 5.25), and she said, "You take this mantra and you'll have all perfection." Then Brahmā chanted the mantra; he got clear knowledge. He also met personally with Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa gave him, heart and soul, all the knowledge that he needed, which is the truncated version of the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam in four verses. Why do airplanes have ashtrays if smoking is prohibited? Could someone open the airplane door in mid-flight? What are the green and red flashing lights on the plane for? These are some of the common questions about air travel that I answer to start this episode. https://www.smartmeetings.com/tips-tools/103099/answers-random-airplane-questions Are you the kind of person who likes to explore and try something new or are you more likely to stick to the tried and true and do what you did before? Of course, it depends on the situation, but it seems some people, for example, like to order the same thing off the menu time and time again while others order something different every time. Some people like to go back to the same place for vacation while others prefer to visit somewhere they've never been before. Why is that? Here to discuss this interesting quirk of human nature is Alex Hutchinson. He is a columnist for Outside magazine and has contributed to the New York Times, The New Yorker and other publications. He is author of the book The Explorer's Gene: Why We Seek Big Challenges, New Flavors, and the Blank Spots on the Map (https://amzn.to/3XRGYQa). All exercise is good but strength training in particular has some wonderful benefits you may not be aware of. Those benefits include weight control, improved mental health, fighting cancer and more. Strength training is simply lifting weights that strengthen your muscles and it can help anyone at any age. Here to explain the benefits and explain how to do it is Michael Joseph Gross. He is a longtime Vanity Fair contributing editor who has published investigative reports, essays, and books about culture, technology, and business and he is author of the book, Stronger: The Untold Story of Muscle in Our Lives (https://amzn.to/4ib4sHc). When God calls us to something difficult, it's easy to want to “stay in the boat,” but when we have the faith to take those steps toward Jesus, we get to experience Him and His works in a powerful way.
