Joy Reid leads this episode of The ReidOut with Donald Trump bragging again about acing a dementia test, meanwhile claiming that presidents should have full immunity for any crimes they might want to commit. Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder joins Joy on that, and on a big victory in Louisiana where a new legislative map, with two majority-Black districts, is advancing in the state legislature. Next, with a border deal on the table, which Senate Republicans say is a great deal, Trump's MAGA caucus in the House is saying no, because they want to continue to stoke fear ahead of the fall election. All this and more in this edition of The ReidOut on MSNBC.
Tom's guest today is Eric Holder, who served as the 82nd Attorney General of the United States during the first six years of the Obama Administration. He was the first African American to serve in that position. Today, Holder is working to advance voting rights with the organization he founded in 2016 and now chairs called the National Democratic Redistricting Committee. The NDRC works to remedy the gerrymandering that makes so many areas of the country poorly represented in Congress. Holder contends that voter suppression is as old as the republic itself, and he believes basic fixes are needed to counter the anti-democratic impulses that lead to laws that target people of color to make voting harder. When the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act in its 2013 Shelby County v. Holder decision, many states responded by enacting draconian voter restriction laws. Mr. Holder says it made him realize that the Supreme Court and the Congress are facing what he calls a “modern day existential crisis,” and that our democracy can only be pulled back from the brink of disaster by rigorous reforms to the most basic tenet of our representative government: voting. In his new book, Mr. Holder and his co-author Sam Koppelman observe that the country is operating with an “unrepresentative Senate, a gerrymandered House, an anti-democratic Electoral College and a stolen Supreme Court.” And they offer prescriptions for reforms. The book is called Our Unfinished March: The Violent Past and Imperiled Future of the Vote-A History, A Crisis, A Plan. Eric Holder joins us on Zoom from Washington, DC. Hr 1: Kimberly Morin says NH Dems are more interested in allowing out of state college kids vote in their elections than NH residents. It's not voter fraud because they passed a law making it legal, but it's still voter suppression because it suppresses the value of NH Citizens. Hr 2: Presidential wannabe Kamala Harris wants DOJ IG to investigate if White House ‘improperly' ordered DOJ. AND... If you're on the Left SCREAMING about what AG Barr is doing but said NOTHING about what AG Holder did under Obama, then you're a political hack and a HYPOCRITE! Hr 3: Tickets for ‘An Evening with President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton' as little as $2. AND... Dr. Bridget Melson (Dr. B.) talks about getting involved in local politics, running for office, and serving on a city council. Have you had your healthy dose of reality lately?
