Dahlia Lithwick is joined by former Attorney General Eric Holder as Amicus begins its summer season while the Supreme Court is in recess. General Holder describes his feelings when, as President Barack Obama's Attorney General, he realized he could not in good conscience take part in the long-held tradition of the AG arguing an “easy case” before the Supreme Court. The issue? That same court had just eviscerated the Voting Rights Act in a case that will forever bear his name: Shelby County v Holder. General Holder wants us to take the steps beyond anger at the assault on voting rights, and move forward with joy toward action. My guest today is Sam Koppelman. Sam is a best-selling author and top speechwriter for many prominent politicians. Sam just co-wrote a book with former Attorney General Eric Holder called "Our Unfinished March: The Violent Past and Imperiled Future of the Vote-A History, a Crisis, a Plan" In this episode, we talked about voter fraud, voter ID laws, voter suppression, and gerrymandering. We discuss the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the so-called "gutting of that act" in 2013. We also talk about the great replacement theory and much more. As you'll hear in the episode, I'm skeptical of the narrative that voter suppression is a huge problem, that voter ID laws are racist, and so forth. While Sam doesn't quite go that far, I think there is some distance between his position on these topics and my own. As we near the midterms, I'm gonna have a few more guests like this that deal with electoral politics. I hope you enjoy this conversation. Learn more about your ad choices. On Friday's Mark Levin Show, the January 6th Committee is a trojan-horse front for the Department of Justice to cast a wider net than a law enforcement agency is legally permitted to. This is unconstitutional as it violates the individual's Constitutional rights in a criminal proceeding. Earlier, Peter Navarro was held in contempt of Congress by the Congressional January 6th Committee. Navarro was indicted and immediately arrested at the airport and placed in handcuffs and leg irons for his political opposition to the committee's document request. Similarly, former Attorney General Eric Holder was held in contempt of Congress and was never arrested; clearly, there's a double standard. Democrats use Congress and its subpoena powers in the legislative branch to work as an apanage of law enforcement agencies in the executive branch. Then, some who advocate for judicial review reject the notion that then VP Mike Pence lacked the authority to send the electoral college votes back to their respective states. The constitution specifically points out that it is the state legislatures that decide and to ignore that would be a violation of the federal Constitution. Democrats repeatedly violated state legislatures in the 2020 election and the Supreme Court of the United States did nothing about it. Later, Candidate Dave McCormick conceded the PA Senate primary race after a recount and a lawsuit he filed on bad advice from his lawyer Chuck Cooper. It's critical that counter-culture Democrats be stopped in the midterms. The reason the culture is rotting is because the American Marxists are focused on destroying Americanism. They destroy the culture to seize more power and expand their ruling class which seeks political power above anything else. Afterward, tyrannically tinkering with the law for the sake of defending crimes and punishing the law creates a permanent place for plunder in society. In time the misery and corrosiveness of the American Marxists' utopian cause will rot the culture if not checked. Finally, Biden and Putin speak the same language and the economy is tanking while Biden keeps blaming Russia. They claim that fossil fuels must be replaced by electricity, yet electricity requires fossil fuels. Democrats will lie and blame others every step of the way. Learn more about your ad choices. John Heilemann talks with former Attorney General Eric Holder and speechwriter Sam Koppelman, co-authors of the new book Our Unfinished March: The Violent Past and Imperiled Future of the Vote — A History, a Crisis, a Plan. Heilemann, Holder, and Koppelman discuss the importance of the right to vote and why it has been under siege since the Supreme Court's 2013 decision in Shelby County v. Holder, which gutted the 1965 Voting Rights Act; their wide-ranging prescriptions for saving the American democratic process, including not just protections of voting rights but fundamental reforms to the Supreme Court, the U.S. Senate, congressional redistricting, and the Electoral College; and Holder's reluctant embrace of the arguments in favor of indicting former President Donald Trump for his actions related to the January 6 insurrection. They also discuss the fatal shooting of 19 schoolchildren and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas, the Republican Party's intransigence on the Second Amendment, and what might be required to shock voters and their representatives in Congress into reforming the nation's gun laws. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) reflects on his decade of pleading for gun reform and what's next in the fight. Plus, former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder talks about how little progress America has made since the massacre in Newtown, CT.
When American parents sent their kids to school today, in the back of their minds must have been the horrors of Tuesday's massacre in Texas that left 19 children and two teachers dead. Eric Holder was US attorney general at the time of the Sandy Hook shooting 10 years ago. Christiane asked him about grappling with this as a father and as America's highest law enforcement official, and why he says America's rule of law all comes back to voting rights. It's the topic of his new book Our Unfinished March. Also on today's show: Former Guardian Editor In Chief Alan Rusbridger, Christianity Today's Russell Moore. Cori Bush join Joy Reid to discuss. Next, we analyze how, although it was Justice Samuel Alito who wrote the draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade, all eyes will be on Chief Justice John Roberts when the Supreme Court meets on Thursday for the first time since the draft leaked. Plus, former Attorney General Eric Holder joins us on his new book, and the danger America still faces in the wake of Jan. 6. All this and more in this edition of The ReidOut on MSNBC.

Matt Olsen held so many important and difficult jobs in federal law enforcement and national security that it is hard to know where to begin. A son of North Dakota and a graduate of the University of Virginia and Harvard Law School, Matt worked as a civil rights prosecutor, an Assistant United States Attorney, on the staff of FBI Director Bob Mueller, as the Executive Director of the Guantanamo Review Task Force, as the General Counsel of the National Security Agency, and as the Director of the National Counterterrorism Center.Though we could dedicate an episode to his work in any one of those posts, his work as a civil rights prosecutor – fresh out of a judicial clerkship – was fascinating and vital. There, he focused on enforcing the Voting Rights Act – a landmark civil rights statute – in several southern states to ensure that minority citizens were not disenfranchised. Later, appointed by Attorney General Eric Holder to lead the Guantanamo Review Task Force, Matt found that assignment to be among his most challenging and difficult. In that role, it was his responsibility to try to meet one of President Obama's earliest stated objectives – to close the detention facilities at Guantanamo Bay within the president's first year in office. That, as Matt describes, turned out to be an enormously complex task – a conundrum given the population there and the difficult decisions that had to be made about who should be released, who should be tried – either in a civilian court or in a military commission setting – and who could neither be tried nor released. The process that Matt and his team built to inform those decisions was serious and thoughtful, but the task was inordinately complex and the headwinds that his task force confronted – political and practical – were fierce. Matt also served as the General Counsel for the National Security Agency – the leading signals intelligence agency in the world, and one of the most important sources of information for U.S. national security officials. That job required striking a balance on uncertain and often shifting legal terrain. One one hand, Matt was keenly aware of – and devoted to – his duty to the Constitution and to the laws that govern intelligence collection. He knew his lawyers and NSA operators should never cross “the line” and that it was therefore crucial that they understood where the line was and not get too close to it. On the other hand, Matt clearly understood the need to confront dangerous and relentless counterterrorism and counterintelligence adversaries because of the harm they could inflict on U.S. persons and our national security interests. He approached this job – and this balancing act – in a careful, ethical, and deliberate manner. Matt Olsen was a thoughtful and principled public servant, a gifted leader, and a true expert on national security. He is also humble, kind, and deeply thoughtful about the proper role the government should play to secure our nation and protect its citizens while honoring its commitment to civil rights and civil liberties. If you have thoughtful feedback on this episode or others, please email us at theoathpodcast@gmail.com.Find the transcript and all our previous episodes at MSNBC.com/TheOath
