Our pilgrim, Virgil, and Statius arrive on the otherwise empty sixth terrace of Mount Purgatory. Virgil seems more hesitant. And our pilgrim, Dante, more passive, as he listens to the two older, wiser poets discuss the craft of poetry. This passage represents the paradox of circularity and linearity, of stasis and advancement, that is the major structural (and thematic!) tension in COMEDY.Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as we work through a seemingy easy passage while the pilgrim learns the craft of poetry. Here are the segments for this episode of WALKING WITH DANTE:[02:01] My English translation of the passage: PURGATORIO, Canto XXII, lines 115 - 129. If you'd like to read along or continue the conversation with me, find this episode on my website and drop down the page to see the translation and a place to start a conversation with a comment: markscarbrough.com.[03:23] Circularity and linearity: the crux paradox of COMEDY.[08:37] Marking the temporal as a reality claim in COMEDY.[13:25] A possible change in Virgil's characterization.[16:25] Learning the craft of poetry (to engage the play of quotation and interpretation).[21:12] Rereading the passage: PURGATORIO, Canto XXII, lines 115 - 129.
In this episode, the guys talk about the book, just a little bit, and put a bow on the whole conversation.

La Porta | Renungan Harian Katolik - Daily Meditation according to Catholic Church liturgy
Delivered by Meisye Laurencia from the Parish of Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral in the Archdiocese of Makassar, Indonesia. Acts of the Apostles 9: 31-42; Rs psalm 116: 12-13.14-15.16-17; John 6: 60-69.THE BREAD OF LIFE SUSTAINS US TO GOFORWARD The title for our meditation today is:The Bread of Life Sustains Us to Go Forward. The horse of the priest from alocal parish could only eat at certain stops, because there was food and drinkavailable to it. The priest, during his pastoral visit to the mission stationsin mountains, sat on the horse's back along with a number of other items kept inseveral sacks. The horse was the friend of the priestin the journey. Although tired and hungry, the horse was able to avade temptationto stop and look for food or drink. The available food and drink for the horsewere in the village, a place that was familiar to. The food and drink motivatedthe horse to walk in the same direction and it was impossible for it to changethe course. The horse did not care about the burden carried and how fatigue itwas. The horse only knew that later when arriving at the place intended tothere was always food and drink available to satisfy all hunger and thirst. Jesus Christ as our bread of lifekeeps us going forward as the one and holy Church to certain goal that His willand power had prepared for us. Like food that motivated the horse to go on, JesusChrist, our Guide and Teacher encourages and sustains us to go on and stay inHis company along the journey of salvation. He makes himself our everlasting foodand drink. Teaching and welcoming new membersinto the Church, repentance and self-renewal, healing as the apostle Peter didin today's reading, and building community, all these reflect how we as theChurch with all her members move forward to realize the works and mission ofJesus Christ. The Church must move and walk forward. Jesus Christ as our bread of lifeshould encourage, urge and even demanding when it comes to the need of changefrom old to new life. Eating the Body and drinking the Blood of Jesus Christare the same as using Jesus Christ in our bodies and souls so that His Holy Spiritalways controls us. The consequence is there, that we must do His will. Many people with freedom, responsibility and optimism accept that consequence with joy. Thay is why theEarly Church grew rapidly in numbers and they all expressed a deep gratitude forthis new experience of faith. This Church continued to grow until it becomesthe one and holy Church as of today. Our Church today remains following thepath of Jesus Christ and continue to move forward. But some people are having trouble inthe journey of salvation. They decline in their faith orientation. They preferanother path to follow. There are some members of the Church today reject theteachings of Christ and the Holy Church because for them, becoming member ofthe Church is too hard and demanding. Therefore, they take their own way tofind salvation. We hope that we are not included in this type.Let's pray. In the name of theFather ... O Lord our God, praise and thank you for Jesus Christ Your son whois our way, truth and life. We hope we will be loyal to him now and forever. Our Father who art in heaven ... In the name of the Father ...

So too, must Christians, in their walk, go forward and not look back on their past lives, regrets, and failures. Go forward to Christ and seek first the Kingdom of God.

Diary of a Serial Hostess Podcast (private feed for victoriadelamaza@icloud.com)
As a freelance writer, I find it interesting to examine the analytics of last year's posts to determine which were the most popular. As I write this diary, the answers have been surprising. The number of likes, comments, opens and clicks all indicate interest. Thank you, thank you! And, I also adore interaction and reader opinions.Having said all this, I am going with Substack analytics and adding a few more notables to the mix. I hope you agree with me!Ta da ta da!The number one spot goes to:Love Language. About my summer adventures and the introduction of Tarzan. I have never received more private notes and phone calls. Ever.It chronicles summer travel adventures and possible love interests. Wow! Tarzan is now in our lexicon, and we talk about this mystical person with giggles and total abandon. Referring to a Tarzan has become a source of hilarity. Seriously. I will continue to let you know if anything new happens to me. A notable mention is Feeding Tarzan, an article about cooking for loved ones. The second one was:Making Marmalade, which, as the name implies, is about making different types of marmalade with recipes for variations. It was a great way to spend a few cold January days. This article has also led to endless conversations about starting a new project called Lady Anson Preserves. (Absolutely not! I have done it once and will not do it again!) However, I have made marmalade this year following my recipe with great success. And the third, well, it was:Sandwiches 101 is about an after-party I organized at home and the hundreds of sandwiches I made for the event.Who would have thought that writing about making something as simple as this could actually become a "thing?" It is more about making something mundane work in a more elevated setting. I'll take the compliment!Analyzing these three articles, I can see a pattern. After all, I write to share insights and advice about things that happen to me, aiming to amuse you and give ideas on what to do. I don't claim that my way is the best; it is just how I do things after years of experience and making many mistakes.I should also mention the most popular article ever, published in September 2023, which is still at the top of my feed. It is titled At a Loss for Words and is about mourning and how to reach out to our friends. Hopefully, I won't need to write about this any time soon.As I plan this year's posts, I realize that personal stories are more fun to share, that experiences and love interests are what we all want to know, and that this diary will continue to be about food, style, travel, and all the things and places that I think are interesting. Some of the projects I will share this year include a new house I bought in southern Spain. I am still waiting to get licenses and permits from the archeological team at the mayor's office. I will report as soon as construction can start. My architects assure me it will take four months to complete the construction, but I am thinking that eight months is a more reasonable estimate. We will see!"Hams have been delivered; drinks with the team will ensue."I also have many entertaining events at home that are already on the books. A group of ladies from Savannah, some old friends from Palm Beach, and new friends from South Africa are some of the parties I'll tell you about. And this is only in the first quarter!Thank you for staying with me and following my musings. It is wonderful to receive notes and comments; please keep them coming! And with this, I leave you. SincerelyThe Serial Hostess Thank you for subscribing. Leave a comment or share this episode.
The practice of 'zakar' - remembering - isn't just about nostalgia; it's a spiritual discipline that strengthens our faith and shapes our identity. By recalling God's past provisions, we're better equipped to face future challenges. In this Sunday's message, Pastor Luis Guerrero encourages us to create intentional rhythms of reflection and gratitude, reminding us that our worth isn't determined by our achievements, but by our identity as children of God.

The delightful Nikki Giovanni died on Dec. 9. It is a joy and a solace to relisten to this beloved conversation she had with Krista in 2016 – to experience her signature mix of high seriousness, sweeping perspective, and insistent pleasure. Her words and her spirit feel, if anything, more necessary now. In the 1960s, she was a poet of the Black Arts Movement that nourished civil rights. She became a professor at Virginia Tech, where she called forth beauty and courage after the 2007 shooting there — a precursor to violence that has become all too familiar in American life in the intervening years. And she was an adored voice to a new generation — an enthusiastic elder to all — at home in her body and in the world, even while she saw and exulted in the beyond of this tumultuous age of her lifetime.Nikki Giovanni was a University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech. Some of her best known collections from which the readings in this show were taken include Quilting the Black-Eyed Pea, Black Feeling, Black Talk/Black Judgement, and The Collected Poetry of Nikki Giovanni. Her final publications include Make Me Rain: Poems & Prose and A Library.Find the transcript for this show at onbeing.org.

Recently, Keith has been at the forefront of remote team transitions since his published research in 2012-2015 appeared in Harvard Business Review. “Leading Without Authority is a radical new workplace operating system in which leadership no longer demands an office, an official title, or even a physical workplace. When external pressures are mounting, and employees are working from their homes, we can no longer afford to waste time navigating the complex chains of command or bureaucratic bottlenecks present in most companies. But when we choose the bold new methodology of Co-Elevation as our operating model, we unlock the potential to boost productivity, deepen commitment and engagement, and create a level of trust, mutual accountability, and purpose that exceeds what could have been accomplished under the status quo. Regardless of your title, position, or where or how you work, the ability to lead without authority is an essential workplace competency." Daily Study: Yes, wait on God for direction when you are unsure about your path. However, if God has given you direction, go forward and don't hold back on your calling. Too many believers are tiptoeing down the road of their calling because they are afraid of making a mistake, or fearful they are being greedy. This timidness hinders or slows down success and reduces the magnitude of success. Partner with Us: https://churchforentrepreneurs.com/partner Connent with Us: https://churchforentrepreneurs.com
